18ft Skiffs Race 1
The Andoo team of Seve Jarvin, Matt Stenta and Sam Newton gave an outstanding display in the 12-23 knot South-South-Easterly breeze to score a convincing victory in Race 1 of the 100th Australian 18ft Skiff Championship on Sydney Harbour today.

Andoo grabbed the lead at the first windward mark and, but for a brief capsize late on the next spinnaker run, led all the way to defeat the Smeg team of Michael Coxon, Ricky Bridge and Zac Barnabas by 48s.

The defending champion Tech2 team of Jack Macartney, Charlie Wyatt and Lewis Brake was well back in the fleet after a disappointing first leg and hard to battle hard to come back and finish a further 39s behind Smeg, in third place.

Harry Price's Rag & Famish Hotel team finished fourth after another consistent performance, followed by Finport Finance (Keagan York), and Noakesailing (Sean Langman).

Jarvin's decision to go to the eastern side of Shark Island after the start proved to be decisive as Andoo took the lead from Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Steve Thomas) and Finport Finance at the Rose Bay mark.

Smeg's team elected to go to the western side and were back in fourth place, ahead of Rag & Famish Hotel, Lazarus Capital Partners (Marcus Ashley-Jones), Queensland's C-Tech (Dave Hayter) and Birkenhead Point Marina (Tim Westwood).

When Andoo had her costly 'swim'as the crew dropped the spinnaker, Smeg took full advantage to take a narrow lead from Finport Finance and Shaw and Partners at the bottom mark. Andoo was back in fourth place, 19s behind the leader.

Races 2 and 3
Gusty 18-23 knots South-South-Easterly winds produced spectacular, action-packed 18ft Skiff racing for the large spectator fleet on day two of the 100th Australian 18 footer Championship on Sydney Harbour today.

After going down to the current world champion Smeg team in the first of the day's races, Andoo (Seve Jarvin, Matt Stenta and Sam Newton) totally dominated the later race to open up a six point break over the defending champion Tech2 team of Jack Macartney, Charlie Wyatt and Lewis Brake.

With two more races scheduled for tomorrow, Andoo has a total of four points, followed by Tech2 on 10 points, Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price, Josh McKnight and Harry Hall) on 14 with Noakesailing (Sean Langman, Ed Powys and Josh Porebski). Lazarus Capital Partners (Marcus Ashley-Jones) is next on 17 points.

The 100th Australian Championship will continue Monday. Race dates for the remainder of the championship are:
Monday February 7 - Races 4 & 5
Sunday February 13 - Races 6 & 7

Eve McMahon is Irish Sailor of the Year 2021

Eve McMahon Eve McMahon of Howth Yacht Club, the Golden Girl of the international ILCA Classes, is Afloat.ie "Irish Sailor of the Year" for 2021, deservedly following an honoured track set over many years by Ireland's legends in the sport.

Such elevation inevitably results in the top sailor seeming to function on a different level to the rest of us. And certainly, the 18-year-old's international programme through 2021 was mind-boggling, made even more challenging by the frustrations of complying with pandemic regulations and restrictions in a situation made yet more demanding by the fact that some events were cancelled with relatively little notice, while others were put in place with only the briefest of run-in times.

Ten years hence, in looking back at her achievements through 2021, most of us will have long since forgotten that what looks like a smooth progression was at the time a potentially stressful process of constantly dealing with unexpected international travel and training problems. Problems of logistics and long delays and other hassle, problems where in times past a smooth travel transit was considered essential to approaching a major event in the right frame of mind.

Yet throughout it all Eve stayed the course and faced the competition with such composure that even in the darkest hours, there might be flashes of gallant humour. And her already substantial fan-base was enlarged even further by the fact that she seems to enjoy her sailing more than ever.

Canadian record holding parachutist William MacBrien enters the Global Solo Challenge

William MacBrien Canadian parachutist William MacBrien has won several gold medals in the discipline and is a record holder with more than 3000 jumps in the x2 category.

He certainly has a strong capacity to prepare for and mitigate risks and was attracted by the Global Solo Challenge as it sailing solo in remote waters means he will need to get things right the first time round or face serious trouble.

As with many other skippers he has inherited his passion for sailing from his father. He plans to find and refit an older Open 50 for the event.

What brought you to like single-handed sailing?
So far, because it seemed the easiest to organize. Oops, I have to do everything myself I realize now. So, I am so very lucky to have a capable team heading up management to back check me on decsions.

The risk management in this race is like no other. You have to be able to do everything to save yourself the first time. Just like skydiving. So looking forward to the challenge!

IMOCA: The Market For Masts Is Under Tension
With 12 new build boats expected to be launched the next 15 months and two boats recently dismasted (Bureau Vallee 3 and 11th Hour – Alaka'i) during the Transat Jacques Vabre and then Kostum – Lantana Paysage breaking her rig during the return delivery passage from Martinique, the mast market for Imoca is coming under more and more stress since the start of the winter. To find out how the class and the company Lorima who are the supplier of the one-design Imoca spar are organizing themselves to meet the demand Tip & Shaft investigate……

It was almost immediately after the dismasting of his Kostum – Lantana Paysage during the return delivery after the Transat Jacques Vabre, that Louis Duc set out to find a new mast whilst sailing under jury rig back to his home port of Caen. The rule's grandfather clause applies to his 2008 Farr design and so he does not need to buy a one-design spar, he was able instead to look at the very small pool of second-hand masts still in existence.

"I was able to draw up a tiny list of 4-5 masts available and that was thanks to the kindness and good ideas of a lot of racers who have played this game. And so we are only waiting for the expertise to complete the purchase", Duc tells Tip & Shaft.

This kind of second-hand mast sells for between 60,000 and 90,000 euros, depending on the condition and what generation it is. A new one is close to 200,000.

"I didn't have the budget for a new one and, anyway, there is a full year's wait for anyone who puts in an an order today", adds Duc. The lead times have in fact considerably lengthened, given the exceptional demand faced by the Lorient builder Lorima who are the exclusive supplier of the Imoca 60-footers.

The demand is very high...

Sailing World on Water February 04.22
It's the finals day for the 18 Footers, New South Wales State Championships and our expert, Christophe Favreau, talks to the top three contenders in the Boat Park.

The Royal Gelong Yacht Club held its annual "Festival of Sails" recently and it started with a "Passage Race" from Melbourne to get the fleet to the action in Gelong. Top Sailor, Lisa Darmanin was there and she sent in these Daily Reports.

On November 1st, 2021, Dona Bertarelli, Yann Guichard and their team began the standby for a fourth attempt at the Jules Verne Trophy around-the-world sailing record. Since this date, there has not been a suitable weather window for the crew of the maxi-trimaran Sails of Change to set sail with a realistic chance of beating the record. Today, Dona Bertarelli and Yann Guichard announced the end of standby for Spindrift, and their plans to renew the attempt later this year.

New 5.5 Metre Technical Committee brings mix of experience and knowledge
The International 5.5 Metre Class Association has appointed a new Technical Committee from 2022 consisting of some new and old names to the class.

The prime roles of the technical committee are to monitor the existing rules as well as to make interpretations for builders and owners.

With a swathe of new boats hitting the water, the role of the technical committee is more important than ever, and there have been frequent requests for interpretation of the sometimes complex Class Rules.

The new Technical Committee consists of
Jamie MacPhail, AUS, Chairman
Mike Toppa, USA
Guy Roland Perrin, SUI
Rients van der Woude, NOR
Odin Grupe, GER

The new Chairman, Jamie MacPhail, more recently seen as the middleman on Black Magic during the 2020 World Championship, has been involved in the yachting industry for over 38 years. He has owned and managed a number of marine businesses manufacturing composite yachts and cruisers, including sales and project management of a number of very successful IMS and IRC race yachts, such Hobart winners, Hamilton Island winners, Kenwood Cup winners. -- Robert Deaves

Emirates Team New Zealand Hydrogen Foiling Chase Boat In Fitout Preparing For Launch
Emirates Team New Zealand's prototype hydrogen foiling chase boat is in the final stages of a complex fit out prior to its launch in March.

The construction of the boat was started in August 2021 at the team's North Shore build facility, the appendage construction is in its final stages and the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powertrain installation is underway at the team's base in Auckland's Viaduct Harbour.

The ETNZ Hydrogen project powered by Toyota has been an important one for Emirates Team New Zealand who, as Defender of the America's Cup, have committed to driving hydrogen innovation in the marine industry through working with clean technologies.

The four hydrogen storage tanks onboard from Hexagon Purus will store 33kgs of hydrogen gas at 350bar while the propulsion is via a Mercury bottom end propellor which is embedded within the foils. The design of the foil wings by the Emirates Team New Zealand design team was largely based on AC75 technology and the Autopilot which will be used to control the ride height is ETNZ proprietary technology that will be implemented in the new AC40 boats in production.

The prototype boat is expected to launch early next month.
