100th Australian 18 Footers Championship Starts Saturday

Australian 18 Footers Championship When the 23-boat fleet from NSW and Queensland lines up for Race 1 of the 100th Australian 18 footers Championship on Sydney Harbour next Saturday, the type of boat competing and number of crew members on each boat will be vastly different from the boats which contested the first event on the Swan River, Perth in January 1912.

When a class of racing boat is 130 years old, this is natural, but when you take a look at the photos from the past, and compare them to the 2022 boats, it’s almost impossible to believe that these are from the same class, the famous Australian 18 footers.

The modern 18ft skiff is a far cry from the cedar, 7ft beam ‘heeled dinghy type’ boats of the early 18 footer years, with their massive spread of numerous sails, and crews ranging from 10-15 men depending on the strength of the wind.

They are highly technical, very light, yet strong enough to meet the high demands of 18ft skiff racing, and require a very precise building process.

Pre-impregnated carbon fibres are shipped to Australia under refrigerated conditions, and the hull and deck is then constructed from a core material of Kevlar Nomex honeycomb paper, sandwiched between two layers of the pre-impregnated carbon fibre.

Chris Webb was the undisputed master of open boat sailing in the early 1900s, and had a long career which extended from the 1880's until the late 1930's. He won more Championship races than anyone and in the 1920's was the skipper of HC Press, which was a long time scratch boat at both the Sydney Sailing Club and the Sydney Flying Squadron.

When the handicapper gave him a start of 15 seconds at one time, he refused to take the start and was asked to explain himself. He replied that he would not take a start from anyone, “I am not a one-day champion, have always been a champion, and consider I should always be on scratch. While I am boat sailing, if I can’t win without a start it is time to turn the game up.”

The skipper presently making his mark as the modern day #1 skipper at the Australian 18 footer Championship is Jack Macartney, skipper of the 2021-22 championship pre-series favourite Tech2.

Jack first won an Australian Championship in 2006-07 when he was the sheet hand on Micah Lane’s Macquarie Real Estate team, which took the title on Sydney Harbour.

In 2021-22, he will be aiming to win his third consecutive Australian 18 footer Championship in the same Tech2 skiff, and has Lewis Brake on the sheet and Charlie Wyatt in the bow trying to emulate last year’s success. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

WHAT The online Harken catalog is live... Today and every day.

You may be familiar with the Harken catalog. Thick. Glossy. Pictures. Video. Juicy charts. 292 pages. Stacks of ‘em at the Harken retailer near you. There's no tool more effective for selecting the right Harken equipment to get faster.

Previously, there was a bit of a challenge: the catalog comes off press once each year. Harken introduces new equipment all year. So the day after you got your new print version we were already wishing the next new product could have been included.

We’ve solved that! Now there’s a new Harken catalog updated all the time. You'll find it at the bottom of the homepage of Harken.com. Or you can download the 2022 edition right now.

The online Harken catalog looks just like the print catalog. You can flip pages. You can scan the codes and get to the video. You can ring up your bow guy and collaborate about a prefeeder for your Carbo Racing Head Foil. It IS the Harken catalog. There are, however, two small differences:

1. It's updated an unlimited number of times each year.
2. It will never give you a paper cut.

Gypsy Kings
Claims for the title of ‘best sailor on the planet’ could be debated long into the night. I could make a compelling, reasoned, rounded argument for any number of sailors right now but my trump card that would be almost impossible to argue against on a cold winter’s evening is a split between Charles Caudrelier and Franck Cammas. What these two have done, and continue to do, with the quite astonishing Gitana programme is something for the record books. I’m an unashamed fan. It’s almost something from the pages of the fiction shelves or sci-fi fantasy with a romance amplified by the sheer Gallic charm and ‘Joie de vivre’ that these ocean gypsy’s display every time they race or pit themselves against the clock. They are the Gypsy Kings - make no mistake.

Having the opportunity to peer into a top class ocean programme is something not to be passed up and their superb dedicated media man, Yann Riou, has collated the most remarkable series that is worthy of a Netflix billing. It’s a dive into what the team call the “joys and disillusions” of trying to set the outright Jules Verne record and documents the journey from launch in 2017, the highs and lows, the peaks and troughs, and the curation of the ultimate money-no-object tilt at the world’s greatest races and records.

Translated names co-skippers, first mate for Ocean Globe Race 2023
The Translated 9 team announced today the addition of Vittorio and Nico Malingri, members of Italy's most famous ocean sailing family, to support its efforts in the Ocean Globe Race 2023 (OGR).

Vittorio Malingri will join the team as co-skipper--sharing responsibilities with Translated CEO Marco Trombetti--while his son, Nico, was named chief mate. Translated Co-Founder and Chairwoman Isabelle Andrieu will serve as team coach.

"Seventy percent of our crew will be non-professionals... Being able to count on the knowledge and experience of one of Italy's greatest sailors for the training and management of the crew gives us great confidence," said Trombetti, who will also serve as team manager on the Translated 9. "Vittorio immediately believed in the project, and we're excited to have him on board."

The Malingris are legendary sailors in Italy's racing history: Vittorio's father, Franco, and uncle, Doi, took part in the first Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973.

Vittorio, who will also serve as tech manager on the Translated 9, is often referred to as a "Master of the Sea" and was the first Italian to participate in the Vendee Globe, a solo circumnavigation of the globe with no docking or external assistance provided. Vittorio's achievements include several world records, one of which he achieved with his son, Nico.

Regate di Primavera - Portofino
21 - 25 April 2022
Notice of Race published and inscriptions opened

The Queens of the sea are back in Portofino with the Regate di Primavera - Portofino. After the success of the 2021 edition, with the Gulf of Tigullio saluting the return of the races with extraordinary weather conditions, in 2022 the binomial sailing-Portofino is in the spotlight again thanks to the collaboration between the Yacht Club Italiano, the municipality of Portofino, the International Maxi Association and Rolex as official timepiece; four days of splendid races on the water to celebrate the ancient link between the town and the sport of sailing.

The Regate di Primavera will start officially on Thursday, April 21 with the arrival of the yachts and registration procedures. The boats will be moored in Portofino Yacht Marina until all the berths are filled, then in the Porto di Santa Margherita Ligure and at anchor in the beautiful bays around it. Action on the water begins Friday, April 22 with the start of the first race and will end on Monday, April 25 with the final race and the prizegiving.

The Trophy is for yachts of more than 18 m overall and, unlike 2021 when an invitation formula was adopted, it is open to all yachts of more than 60 feet with IRC certificates. The entries will be divided into two groups: racers and cruiser-racers, and will sail on different courses in the Gulf of Tigullio: races round the marks for the former and coastal races for the latter.

Among the innovations this year: the Regate di Primavera will also be the theatre of the Mylius Cup, the trophy for the fast yachts built by the Podenzano yard.

World Sailing’s Application for 2028 Summer Paralympic Games unveiled
World Sailing, the international federation for the sport of sailing and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), attended a virtual briefing by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) as it outlined the terms and timeline for sports seeking inclusion in the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles, USA. International federations (IFs) seeking inclusion were invited to participate in the hour-long session led by IPC President, Andrew Parsons, and Jürgen Padberg, Paralympic Games Sport & NPC Services Senior Manager Project Lead.

"World Sailing has put the reinstatement of Para Sailing in the Paralympic Games at the top of its agenda," stated David Graham, CEO of World Sailing, who attended the briefing. "We are pleased that the IPC has so clearly outlined the process for sports seeking selection for the Paralympic Games LA28 at such an early stage in 2022 and provided the timeline to which World Sailing must submit its case."

IPC Timeline:
The process of sports bidding to be included in the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games will follow a four-step process:

Step 1: IPC initiates the review process. Eligible IFs are invited to fill out the ‘Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games Sport Programme Questionnaire’ (2 Feb 2022)
Step 2: Deadline for IFs to return the Questionnaire to the IPC (4 July 2022)
Step 3: The IPC Governing Board reviews all interested sports and identifies areas that need additional information and clarification (end of Sept 2022)
Step 4: The IPC Governing Board determines the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games Sport Programme (end of Jan 2023)

69F: One Down, The Rest Of The Season To Go!
69F buoyed by a successful participation in the first round of the Bacardi Winter Series the fleet now tools up to welcome the future of sailing in the Youth Foiling Gold Cup (Feb 4-10)

The 69F fleet has successfully completed its first regatta on American waters in Miami this week but it was still the European teams that lead the way with Swiss Team Tilt taking the honours after three days of racing, followed by Danish team Racing Yachts and the experienced Italian team Fly Marga. Given that Schneiter is a two time Olympian in the 49er and his crew (Stuart Bithell and Jason Saunders) are also double Olympians, it was not a shock to see them at the front of the fleet.

Nine teams have signed up, representing seven countries and most of the fleet is new to the class.

Racing starts on the 5th of February and the forecast for Miami shows that the week of warm ups, knockouts and finals will play out in wildly different wind conditions so the team that fights their way to the top of the podium will have to master the local conditions, the flying Persico 69F and the stiff competition. Let the games begin.

Teams for Youth Foiling Gold Cup ACT1:
- Royal New Zealand Yachting Squadron (NZL) - Royal Irish Yacht Club
- Katana Sailing Team (SUI) - Societe Nautique de Geneve
- Sail America (USA) - James Island Yacht Club
- Youth Foiling Team (FRA) - La Rochelle Nautique
- Clean Sailors Youth Racing Team (GER) - Thunersee Yachtclub
- Team Argentina (ARG) - Yacht Club Argentino
- Helvetia by Normandy Elite Team (FRA) - Club de Voile Saint-Aubine-Elbeuf
- Team Thailand (THA) - TBC

Changing Tradewinds? - Dutch carbon emission-free shipping firm EcoClippers first acquired sailing ship De Tukker, is to undergo a refit to return the sail-trainee vessel to its original cargoship role while still under sail on the North Sea. This will also see paying passengers on routes between the UK and mainland Europe. Credit: EcoClippers-twitter

A zero-carbon emission shipping company in the Netherlands has acquired this month its first vessel that will transport cargo as well as passengers under sail on the North Sea within the first half of 2022, writes Jehan Ashmore.

EcoClippers

Alkmaar based EcoClipper has purchased the 1912 built De Tukker, a Dutch Sea Klipper also known as a 'Schoeneraak'. Originally, De Tukker traded in North Sea coastal cargoes and neighbouring waters before becoming a trainee sailing ship.

They plan to introduce this first converted ship to operate in sustainable shipping on the North Sea and serve the UK-mainland Europe routes while bringing to those seeking a more environmenal friendly travel experience. Also EcoClippers cite given in recent years the public's increasing awareness of the fragility of global supply-chains and how companies are seeking other options to ship their products.

At the General Assembly of European Boating Industry (EBI) on 25th January, several major decisions for the future of association were taken. Foremost is the new strategy spanning the period 2022-2025 that is based on a mission statement of “Advancing and representing a sustainable boating and nautical tourism industry #MadeInEurope”. With clear objectives, EBI will focus its actions on the core area of active interest representation at European level while introducing several complementary initiatives that will offer added value to EBI’s members and the industry. More information on the strategy, objectives and policy priorities can be found on the EBI website.

The new strategy is accompanied by a new logo and branding, the first update since EBI’s foundation in 2009, that showcases its status as an effective, modern, and member-driven association. This rebranding effort marks EBI commitment to further improving its value in support of the industry.

The Last Word
How gullible are you? Is your gullibility located in some "gullibility center" in your brain? Could a neurosurgeon reach in and perform some delicate operation to lower your gullibility, otherwise leaving you alone? If you believe this, you are pretty gullible, and should perhaps consider such an operation. -- Douglas R. Hofstadter
