Trimaran Use It Again: Cape Horn Passage Imminent
Romain Pilliard and Alex Pella, accompanied by Christian Dumard, their router and meteorologist on land, finally seem to see a weather window to launch an assault on the legendary Cape Horn. Still in the shelter of Tierra del Fuego in the North of the Strait of Lemaire where they have taken refuge since Sunday evening, Romain and Alex will try to cross Cape Horn tomorrow Wednesday during the day. A dreaded stage of this Round the World Upside Down and oh so symbolic in the lives of sailors.

This Tuesday, as evidenced by their trajectory on thecartography, Romain and Alex are currently at the extreme eastern tip of Tierra del Fuego to let in a new southwesterly gale at more than 35 knots. Tomorrow, the duo will attempt a first approach to Cape Horn in winds that are a priori manageable, but the big question remains the practicability of the sea which promises to be very rough after the passage of the front on Tuesday. Once Cape Horn has passed, there again, uncertainties remain: will they be able to set off on the crossing of the Pacific or will they first have to take shelter along the Chilean coast?

2022 ORC Rules Now Published Online
ORC Rules London, UK: The Offshore Racing Congress (ORC) has published their 2022 rule books on the ORC website at www.orc.org/rules. These are updates of previous year's rules with changes mandated by the ORC Congress meeting in November 2021, along with a deletion of obsolete terms and rules from last year's editions.

Among the changes are improvements to the VPP, such as hydrodynamic CFD modeling for foil-assisted boats, updates of keel viscous drag calculations, improved aero treatment of cat-rigged boats, better sail force coefficients symmetric and asymmetric spinnakers, new sail force coefficients for headsails deployed to leeward on whisker poles and the introduction of a new term - All-purpose Handicap (APH) - this is intended to replace GPH as a better generalized scoring and reference term.

These changes will result in small changes in ratings for 2022 ORC certificates, with most boats in the 2000+ test fleet not changing more than 0.5% in APH ratings.

The ORC Rating Rules also have some important updates on how ORC racing is conducted in races and regattas. Among these is a shift in certificate issuance to be digital only and to be valid and available once issued by a Rating Office, replacement of GPH with APH, a more fair treatment of quadrilateral sails that the International Measurement System (IMS) rules now help define, and a re-labelling of PCS to be Polar Curve Scoring using the term Scoring Wind.

The ORC Championship Rules (aka, the Green Book) has also been updated with new CDL class limits based on the 2022 VPP, as well as guidance for Heat racing systems when class sizes become too large to race all entries together.

A new edition of the Race Management Guidebook has also been issued, where general principles are discussed and specific use of APH and PCS scoring is explained.

A complete summary of these rule changes is also published here (PDF)

There has also been a slight re-design of 2022 ORC Certificates that improve the relevance and visibility of the boat's measurement information. Page 2 of every ORC certificate shows popular scoring options relevant to the national racing in each country - these options are displayed when clicking on the country abbreviation at the bottom of that page.

The 2022 VPP has also now been sent to Rating Offices around the world for them to issue certificates to their customers…contact your national rating office for more information.

Similarly, the ORC's web portal to certificates, software and more is updated with the new VPP and is ready to produce 2022 test certificates, Speed Guides and Target Speeds.

Ginger and Peter Niemann, Double Circumnavigators, Awarded 2021 Blue Water Medal
Couple completes second high-latitude circumnavigation despite international border closings to win the Cruising Club of America's highest honor.

Ginger and Peter Niemann have been named winners of the 2021 Blue Water Medal by the Cruising Club of America for two sailing circumnavigations that took them to the high latitudes, north and south. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the second trip around the world included rigorous non-stop passages while returning home to Washington state.

The Niemanns exemplify the spirit of adventure and determination represented by the Blue Water Medal, which has been awarded regularly since 1923 to "reward meritorious seamanship and adventure upon the sea displayed by amateur sailors of all nationalities, that might otherwise go unrecognized." Past winners have ranged from Eric Tabarly and Sir Francis Chichester to Rod Stephens, Webb Chiles and Eric and Susan Hiscock.

The Niemanns' first voyaging boat was Marcy, a 47-foot sloop they converted from a schooner. From 2006 to 2010, Marcy took them west-about from Seattle almost 50,000 miles around the world, including rounding the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn. -- John Burnham

He has been Race Director on the Solitaire du Figaro from 2017 to 2021 on the Transat en Double Concarneau-Saint-Barthelemy in 2019 and 2021, on the Route du Rhum Destination Guadeloupe 2018 and most recently on the double handed Transat Jacques Vabre Normandie Le Havre 2021. Overall he has accumulated a significant and varied experience.

Punching South - OnCourse Ep 16
We kick off this episode with a double helping from down under as Sydney plays host two two big crowd pullers.

First up was SailGP, the penultimate stage in the second season where there was plenty of drama as the pressure built ahead of the million dollar finale in March.

Next was the Rolex Sydney Hobart, an offshore classic. After the global pandemic forced organisers to cancel last year's event, there was a keen appetite this year among sailors and spectators alike for the Boxing Day special. According to the competitors, this year's 600 mile race to Tasmania turned out to be one of the toughest ever. But the history books will mark this race as special for another reason, that of the spectacular achievement of one man and his crew in particular.

We visit the 50+ knot club in Namibia as the speed sailing season delivers some outrageous performances in the windsurfing world, as well as seeing what happens when it all goes to rats.

For 50 years the Youth Sailing World Championships has played host to what have become some of the biggest names in sailing. This time it was the turn of Oman to host the event where oodles of talent was clearly on tap. If you'd like to know what the future holds, this event had plenty of answers.

Plus, we bring you up to speed with an update on the America's Cup and preview of the new AC40 in build and talk to the man at the top in World Sailing about the paralympic plan.

2.4 metre The largest gathering of 2.4mR sailors just occurred in "sunny" Florida during the CanAm #1 and CanAm #2 Regattas. 18 boats were battling it out on the starting line with some new faces among the regular fleet members.

On the water the competition was there, and winds cooperated to get 5 races in CanAm #1 and 7 races in CanAM #2. The race committee set marks and set up the courses to provide good opportunities for testing the sailor's skills. It was very apparent during the last race of CanAm #2 that the fleet was already getting much tighter as all the boats were significantly closer at the end of 4 legs then when CanAm #1 began. Only hiccup was the last day had winds that prevented the fleet from going out, but hey, there was wind!

No one dropped out due to sickness or injury between the 2 regattas and we are hoping this trend continues throughout the remainder of the CanAm Series. We saw older boats being brought back to competition levels and even saw Gene Hinkle come out enjoying his first 2.4mR competition in 12 to 15 years. We had three sailors from the Rockport Fleet, three sailors from Canada, and for CanAm #2 had Julio Reguero from Puerto Rico sail.

Our next CanAm Series regatta is Edge Midwinter CanAm #3 on February 19th and 20th.

Let's make 2022 a fantastic year for the fleets as we ready ourselves for the World's in Davis Island this November. If you haven't scheduled these Regattas, get them on your calendar after registering online. Too many sailors waited till the day of the CanAm #1 to register making it just that much more difficult to plan and execute. If you need housing help, let the fleet know but do not let this stop you from participating. Lastly, join the US Class association (link on us24meter.org homepage) for 2022 keeping them healthy and able to function.

"Not Spoiled By The Influence Of Any Rating Rule"

WHAT Throughout 1943, L. Francis Herreshoff filled the pages of America's Rudder magazine with observations on life, strong opinions, stern warnings and even quoted poetry, as he detailed, issue by issue, 'How to Build H-28', to a war weary American public.

As the 5th son of the legendary yacht designer Nathaniel Herreshoff, L. Francis was raised in a rarefied world of America's Cup thoroughbreds and yachts for America's wealthy. Living in the shadow of his famous father undoubtedly led L. Francis to forge his own path as a designer of boats, and the H-28 is his most celebrated and enduring example of his determination to create his own legacy and share his love of the sailing life.

L. Francis' often rambling and unconventional Rudder articles don't only provide instructions for building an H-28 but offer up the design as a window into a philosophy of living. The H-28 design was his gift to ordinary Americans, but alongside the technical instructions and drawings, were paragraphs and paragraphs of strong opinions and prescription for how the boat should be used and even who by.

"H-28 was not designed for racing, so she is not spoiled by the influence of any rating rule. She is also not one of those seagoing can buoys, or half-tide rocks that you pass when you go for a sail and meet again in the same place on your return. This design should not be contemplated or criticized by those who want all inside ballast, sawn frames, deadeyes, bowsprits to dangle an anchor from etc. This type of sea lawyer should get those things for himself, load them onto some abandoned fishing boat, moor himself securely at the head of some harbour out of the way and let those who want to, sail in their own chosen way."
