Bacardi Invitational Winter Series
All change in the weather on the final day at Bacardi Winter Series, January 28-30 2022, with sun and a chilly north north-westerly 7-12 knot breeze.

Teams were out on the race track really early to tune up in what was a stable and more even breeze across the course compared to Saturday. But, the breeze dropped away forcing the J/70 and Melges 24 to head ashore after just one race, with the series discard intensifying the leader board shuffle for glory. Three races for the 69F and no change in the overall line-up.

Bacardi Winter Series Event 2 winner trophies went to 'Dingbat' in the J/70, 'Raza Mixta' in the Melges 24 and 'Team Tilt' in the 69F.

The fleets now advance to the Bacardi Cup Invitational Regatta from March 9-12, 2022. where they will joined by the Viper 640 and VX One and the iconic Star Class will compete for the 95th Bacardi Cup from March 6-12, 2022.

End of Standby for the Jules Verne Trophy
On November 1st, 2021, Dona Bertarelli, Yann Guichard and their team began the standby for a fourth attempt at the Jules Verne Trophy around-the-world sailing record. Since this date, there has not been a suitable weather window for the crew of the maxi-trimaran Sails of Change to set sail with a realistic chance of beating the record. Today, Dona Bertarelli and Yann Guichard announce the end of standby for Spindrift and their plans to renew the attempt later this year.

The primary challenge for the maxi-trimaran Sails of Change is to make a very fast passage from the island of Ushant to the equator (within the record time of 4 days 19 hours and 57 minutes set by Spindrift herself in 2019). The crew would then need to make the southern tip of Africa in under 12 days, to be level with the previous record. With this in mind, since November 1st, 2021, Yann Guichard (skipper), Benjamin Schwartz (navigator) and Jean-Yves Bernot (onshore router) have been analysing the weather in a bid to pinpoint the perfect configuration for linking these two sequences together. However, over the winter, the weather scenario has not once been favourable for starting the attempt.

Jean-Yves Bernot also points out that a late entry into the Deep South is not recommended: "The austral summer is gradually drawing to a close. Sailing conditions in this area are becoming increasingly complicated with the cold, the gales and very heavy seas. With too much bad weather comes the increased risk of suffering damage, and it is more difficult to maintain the high average speeds needed to break the record".

Within this context, Dona Bertarelli and Yann Guichard have decided to call off their team's standby for the Jules Verne Trophy record.

Wrap Up at Le Phare Bleu
Island Water World Grenada Sailing Week, the Petite Calivigny Yacht Club edition, came to a final climax with the third and final race. The Carriacou to Grenada Race pitched the fleet into the Atlantic Ocean for a race to Le Phare Bleu Marina sponsored by Mount Gay Rum for a glittering prize giving. The international fleet said adieu to Carriacou and headed for the West Coast of Grenada for a taste of the big broad Atlantic. With three metre seas and full trade winds it was a rollercoaster 30-mile broad reach to the northern tip of Grenada. After passing the outlying Ronde Island, surrounded by many other islands including Diamond Island, Caille Island, and Les Tantes. The boats sailed along the reefs in sight of the rainforest interior of North Grenada before finishing at the picturesque marina of Le Phare Bleu, located next to the exclusive resort of Calivigny Island.

Your privileged race reporter joined Carriacou Sloop Savvy for the white-knuckle ride in the Atlantic. Skippered by Danny Donelan with another Grenadian Sam as first mate, the crew are all Cajun coming from the USA State of Louisiana. Nicki McGlone-Santistevan was joined by her brother Eric and his wife Deborah and long-time friends Kristina Boudreaux and her husband Lucius.

Savvy was built on the beach in Petite Martinique off Carriacou. The 43-foot gaff-rigged sloop continues the tradition of hundreds of years of boat building in Grenada. The spirit of Carriacou Sloops live on today as pleasure and racing boats but the origins of the boats was for cargo and services between the islands. -- Louay Habib

Harold Cudmore of Cork, Our Main Man in the Global Sailing World

Harold Cudmore The bundle of energy once known as Hurricane Harold came whirling by Dublin the other day. His daughter was having a pandemic-delayed graduation at Trinity, and Harold Cudmore's womenfolk had fitted him into a smart suit for the occasion. It could make for a multi-layered episode from the next Sally Rooney novel. But meanwhile, some decompression treatment next day in less formal attire was needed as he wended his way from the city centre en route to the airport and back to Command HQ in the Isle of Wight. A breeze-shooting session over a very leisurely bar lunch in the Portmarnock Hotel ticked all the boxes.

when Harold Cudmore took his ease in the conservatory bar in Portmarnock, he should have been sitting under the steering wheel of Britannia. When Britannia was scuttled in 1936 on the death-bed instructions of George V, she was stripped of everything removable, and the Royal Family sent her steering wheel to Willie Jameson as a token of the high esteem in which he'd been held.

But while Willie was as game as the next man for a convivial party, he could be a carnaptious old so-and-so, and he would have shared the sailing community's distress at the wanton destruction of a still very able and much-loved vessel. So he promptly sent the wheel back saying thanks but no thanks - in his day, he said, Britannia had been tiller-steered.

In discussing this before we got down to wallowing in personal nostalgia, Harold was musing about the ideal setup in the management of racing a big boat, a proper superyacht, which is one of his more significant areas of activity these days. And a very private area it often is too, which means his name isn't in the headlines as frequently as it was in times past.

Clipper Ventures reveals new Arctic Circle sailing expedition
Clipper Ventures will be offering expedition sailing to Greenland from summer 2022 as it unveils its new subsidiary, SKIRR Adventures. The company has also announced exhilarating big-boat racing, including the new Knox-Johnston Cup and an experiential sailing programme as it relaunches its Clipper Events business.

Set to offer expedition voyages to some of the planet's most powerful and remote locations - by sea and land - SKIRR Adventures will meet the growing demand for adventure and unique experiences following long periods of lockdown.

SKIRR's debut Arctic voyage, a 4,802 nautical mile long High Latitude Expedition split into five legs, will set off from Gosport, UK, on Friday 1 July 2022 bound for Iceland and Greenland via Scotland and the Faroe Islands. The full round-trip will take eight weeks to complete and adventurers can choose one leg, combine several stages, or complete all five.

Once moored, there will be a chance to explore icescapes closer to shore and guides will lead day-expeditions ashore amongst some of the most imposing yet beautiful landscapes shaped by the forces of nature.

Chris Rushton, Principal of SKIRR Adventures, said: "SKIRR Adventures brings together the pioneering spirit that runs through each of Clipper Ventures' entities. It will offer a new, accessible way to take part in a hands-on adventure expedition whilst being guided through some of the most imposing and powerful landscapes that very few people have the opportunity to explore."

"Due to the nature of this expedition, some previous sailing experience is required to take part - this can be Clipper Race training, RYA Day Skipper or equivalent experience - however, training will be available to book in advance of the expedition, to those who are new to sailing."
