18ft Skiffs NSW Championship, Race 8
Tech2 gets off to a good start. Click on image for photo gallery.

WHAT Tech2's team of Jack Macartney, Charlie Wyatt and Lewis Brake became the 2021-22 NSW 18ft Skiff champion when they dominated the fleet to win today's final race (Race 8) of the series on Sydney Harbour.

After trailing the leader Noakesailing over the first two legs of the course, the Tech2 team showed its superior downwind boatspeed to grab the lead at the bottom mark on the first lap and from that point was never really in danger of defeat.

At the end of the three-lap north-east course, Tech2 crossed the finish line 1m13s ahead of Noakesailing (Sean Langman, Ed Powys, Josh Porebski), with Andoo (Dave Gilmour, Matt Stenta, Sam Newton) a further 2m40s back in third place.

Yandoo (John Winning), which led the championship going into today's race, was just 3s further back in fourth place, ahead of The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines (Aron Everett) and Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Steve Thomas)

Tech2 finished with a total of 16 points in the championship, ahead of Yandoo on 18, Noakesailing on 30, Shaw and Partners Financial Services on 40, and Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price) and Fisher & Paykel (Jordan Girdis) on 49.

With the championship on the line between Yandoo and Tech2, today's race was sailed in a 10-knot north-east breeze and produced a close battle between the two teams over the first triangular lap of the course.

The 100th Australian Championship will begin next weekend.

Race dates are:
Saturday - February 5 - Race 1
Sunday - February 6 - Races 2 & 3
Monday - February 7 - Races 4 & 5
Sunday - February 13 - Races 6 & 7

A Workout in Paradise
Island Water World Grenada Sailing Week, the Petite Calivigny Yacht Club edition, continued with a race around Carriacou which was nothing short of spectacular. The fleet gathered in Tyrrel Bay for a reaching start west, then hardening up past Point Cistern. Several teams chose to take the inshore route passing south of Mabouya Island and Sandy Island. The water was clear turquoise around numerous reefs, a joy to behold. The north of Carriacou has hills rising to over 200 metres above sea level. The strategic conundrum was whether to stay offshore away from the wind shadows or go inshore looking for lifting pressure. One major distraction was a foiling kite border, gliding to-and-fro past the fleet, without a care in the world.

Having rounded the northern point of Carriacou, the fleet cracked sheets to hoist downwind sails. The transit between Carriacou and Petite Martinique was just stunning; Atlantic swell breaking on mile-after-mile of coral reef. After a tight reach, the fleet soaked downwind to round the southern tip of Carriacou, before hardening up for a beat to the finish in Tyrell Bay.

The race around Carriacou was a proper workout for 180 sailors in paradise. However, this was a gym routine with a view. Unending superb vistas of pristine Caribbean islands with virtually not a soul in sight.

Cruising Association hosts Brexit Webinar
The Cruising Association hosted a Brexit Webinar for members on Saturday 22 January 2022, which is now published for public viewing amongst the wider cruising community.

The Brexit Webinar was a follow-up to the first CA webinar held in December 2020, and addressed the key issues which continue to impact sail and motor cruisers as a consequence of the UK leaving the EU.

The panel of RATS experts - Robin Baron, Roger Bickerstaff, Nick Bullen, Mike Eastman and Simon Hampton-Matthews - addressed the main issues which impact those who want to go cruising in Europe and discussed solutions. The webinar shared insightful talks, illustrated with slide presentations and case studies.

The Cruising Association is delighted to now share the webinar publicly, excluding the Q&A segment which attracted around 70 questions and is available exclusively on the CA members' version.

Both the recording including the slide presentation, and the slide presentation as a separate document are available to download:

The regatta - the 51st edition of the largest Europe-based event for Olympic Sailing Classes - will attract over 1,500 sailors from 55 nations competing across ten Olympic disciplines.

The joint organisers - the Real Club Nautico de Palma, the Club Nautic S'Arenal and Club Maritimo San Antonio de la Playa - have published the Notice of Race confirming the dates, format, program and classes. The week-long event will see tight competition across the women's ILCA 6 (Laser), 49er FX, IQ Foil and Formula Kite; the men's ILCA 7 (Laser Radial), 49er, IQ Foil and Formula Kite; and the mixed 470 and Nacra 17, at several venues across the Mediterranean island.

The Trofeo Princesa Sofía regatta, the starting point in the European sailing season every year, will be a welcome return for competitors as one of the best Olympic class regattas in the world, and a key date in the Hempel World Cup Series.

Prior to the Trofeo Princesa Sofía, the Mallorca Sailing Center Regatta, a training regatta for registered sailors, will be held from 10-13 March 2022. In addition, the Real Club Nautico de Palma will be the venue for the traditional non-Olympic Class regatta. From 31 March to 3 April classes including Dragon, J70 J80 and Musto Skiffs will be competing.

How To Become A Sailmaker
We can marvel at the skills and tools ancient Mesopotamians put to use when they built the first sailing boats some 5,000 years ago, but have you ever wondered what it takes to become a 21st-century sailmaker?

We sat down with Charles Saville, Quantum's Global Director of Customer Care and a third-generation sailmaker, to learn about this exciting and ever-evolving occupation.

Charles Saville explains that no matter the sailmaking position you aspire to, it is helpful to begin by gaining experience in sail repair and service, as it will give you a solid foundation to build on. Look for a position as a service technician or apprentice at a loft to get a sense for the lay of the land in a sailmaking facility. While it could take up to a year for this initial training, traditional sailmaking continues to evolve with service technicians rapidly expanding their skillset to include outdoor, client facing engagement and selling. From traditional sails to cruising, racing, and mega-yacht sails, sails are vast and varied, and it takes time and dedication for an aspiring sailmaker to learn all the intricacies and skills required. Anyone new to the profession should be prepared to spend time familiarizing themselves with the products both on and off the water.

If this sounds like a large investment of time and energy, that's because it is.

Big Name Entries for next weekend's Tiger Trophy
Next up in the Seldén SailJuice Winter Series is the Tiger Trophy at Rutland Sailing Club, with some well-known names ready to compete for the title...

Winners of the past two Tiger Trophies are among the leading contenders for next weekend's event at Rutland Sailing Club on 5 & 6 February. This is the fifth event in this season's Seldén SailJuice Winter Series.

Last year's victors Dave Hall and Paul Constable have competed at every edition of the Tiger Trophy in honour of their late friend, John Merricks, widely considered the greatest sailor to have emerged from Rutland. Hall & Constable's Fireball will be up against the winners from the previous year, Neil Marsden and Jonny McGovern back in their 470. Nathan Batchelor & Sam Pascoe are not regulars in the RS400 together but this Ovington Boats works team have won plenty of major titles in other classes and are likely to be fast. Nick Craig & Toby Lewis would be fast if they were in an RS400 too, but they're chancing their handicap opportunities in a GP14 dinghy instead.

Others to watch include Amelie Hiscocks crewed in the 29er by her double Olympic medal-winning dad Simon. There's a strong contingent of the Tylecote family also entered, with Fiona Tylecote and Sarah Kemp racing a 2000, and Fiona's sons Jamie and Ben Tylecote each racing ILCA 6 singlehanders. Roger Gilbert & Ben McGrane have already won two events so far in the Seldén SailJuice Winter Series and are looking to consolidate their position in the overall rankings with a good score from Rutland.

With more than 50 boats already entered in a range of classes, the Tiger Trophy is shaping up to be one of the most competitive and well-attended events of this winter.

The Wreck of the Schooner "Wyoming", the Largest Wooden Ship in History
The monstrous coal-hauling Schooner "Wyoming", built by Percy and Small in Bath, Maine, was the biggest wooden ship to sail the seas. On a routine voyage bringing coal to Saint John, New Brunswick, she disappeared.

The Maine Maritime Museum has an excellent exhibit on the vessel, showing artifacts, models, and photographs of her.
