Winners are grinners in Grenada
The final class and trophy winners were decided on the 18th day of the RORC Transatlantic Race. Richard Palmer’s JPK 1010 Jangada (GBR) has won IRC Two-Handed, racing with Jeremy Waitt. Martin Westcott’s S&S Swan 57 Equinoccio (CHI) has won the RORC Transatlantic Race IRC Classic Division. Christopher Daniel’s J/122 Juno (GBR) has safely finished the race, and three teams are still racing towards Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina in Grenada.

Jangada finished the race in an elapsed time of 16 days 11 hrs 59 mins 46 secs, winning IRC Two Handed and placing third for IRC One. Jangada’s IRC corrected time is a new race record for Two-Handed teams, bettering their 2019 triumph, and also establishing the IRCRecords™ corrected time for the course of 16 days 13 hrs 58 mins 34 secs.

Martin Westcott’s S&S Swan 57 Equinoccio (CHI) has won the IRC Classic Division having completed the race in an elapsed time of 16 days 18 hrs 20 mins 00 secs. Baptiste Garnier’s Eugenia V (FRA) and Remy Gerin’s Faïaoahé (FRA) are still racing, but cannot eclipse Equinoccio’s time after IRC correction. Equinoccio is returning home to Chile after the race, but will be exploring Grenada and the Southern Caribbean before transiting the Panama Canal to return home.

Christopher Daniel’s J/122 Juno (GBR) finished the race in an elapsed time of 16 days 5 hrs 43 mins 12 secs. Christopher Daniel’s was racing Juno with his daughter Poppy and son Jack. Cat Hunt is believed to be the first female navigator to complete this year’s race.

The Gunboat 68 Tosca, sailed by Ken Howery and Alex Thomson finished the RORC Transatlantic Race on Tuesday 25th January at UTC 23:27:13. Next to arrive will be Carlo Vroon's Hinckley Sou'wester 52 (NED) with 100nm to the finish (as at 1000 UTC on 26 Jan). -- Louay Habib

The Ocean Cruising Club Announces Awards for 2021
Devon, UK: Despite another year of pandemic challenges, the OCC Awards Subcommittee has found numerous achievements to recognise in the cruising world. Nominations are made by Full Members of the OCC, winners are selected by a highly experienced team of bluewater cruisers, and selections are approved by the OCC General Committee.

The OCC is especially pleased to announce that Dustin Reynolds is this year’s recipient of the Club’s premier award, The OCC Barton Cup, which salutes an exceptional or challenging voyage or series of voyages. A double amputee following a motorcycle accident in 2008, six years later Dustin left Hawaii aboard his 35ft Alberg sloop, Tiama. By 2018 he had reached South Africa and has now completed his circumnavigation via the Panama Canal, not to mention a side-trip to Antarctica aboard a friend’s 38 footer. The journey took Dustin 7.5 years, starting and ending in Kona HI.

With little experience and little to no money he found a way to pursue his dream. It should be pointed out that Dustin’s boat is extremely low-tech, with no electric winches or other gismos to make his sailing easier. In fact, prior to the Royal Cape Yacht Club presenting him with a self-tailing winch in early 2019, he lacked even this basic piece of kit. Dustin was a recipient of the OCC Challenge Grant and in 2018 was recognised with the OCC Seamanship Award.

The OCC Seamanship Award goes to George Arnison s/v Good Report and Duncan Lougee s/v Minke in recognition of their outstanding seamanship during their first ocean passage in the 2021 Jester Azores Challenge.

The OCC Lifetime Cruising Award 2021 is presented posthumously to James Wharram (deceased 14th Dec. 2021 aged 93). James Wharram, considered by many as the father of modern multihull cruising, was a free-spirited sailor and designer who specialised in double-canoe style sailing catamarans, inspired by the Polynesian double canoe. -- Daria Blackwell

Hamble Warming Pan 2022 - Sunday 20th March
Hamble River Sailing Club’s Hamble Warming Pan on Sunday 20th March will be the 60th edition of the club’s annual dinghy open meeting and welcomes all non-trapeze dinghies rated PY 970-1275, plus 420s, RS400s and Foxer dinghies. With starts from 1130 outside the River Hamble, three back-to-back races are planned with racing organised in fast and slow PY fleets, plus one-design starts for classes mustering 8 boats or more. An Early-Bird entry rate is available online with late entry available on the day.

First run in 1962, the Hamble Warming Pan was the season opener, with new designs in the highly competitive Merlin Rocket and National 12 classes launched and tested for the first time and these classes became the bedrock of this great event. Speaking about it, Steph Merry, Commodore of HRSC said: “The club was founded in 1919 'to encourage the sport of small boat sailing and racing’ and our members enjoy running this famous dinghy event and also its junior version as part of our extensive sailing programme”.

Full entry details and the Notice of Race can be found at the HRSC website: www.hrsc.org.uk

Superyacht Cup Palma 2022 starts to take shape
Numerous prospective entries from both newcomers and SYC regulars have been received, joining the trio of confirmed J Class entries Topaz, Ranger and Velsheda at the June 29 to July 2 festival of sail, with a 12-15 strong fleet expected.

And as a further sign that it is all systems go for Superyacht Cup Palma 2022, SYC’s long-standing race management partner the prestigious Real Club Náutico de Palma will again provide the elegant setting for the shore base following the success of the venue last year.

“As previously announced, we have made a small change to the dates to welcome the J Class, and we are receiving a lot of early interest from across the superyacht world from both prospective new entries and returning old friends - 2022 is looking set to be a great way to start our second quarter-century.” said SYC Event Director Kate Branagh.

Among the first timers planning to join Europe’s longest running superyacht regatta are the 43m Vitters-built La Belle and the 38m Oyster 1225 Archelon.

Meanwhile previous attendees actively planning a return include the streamlined 33m Vitters-built sloop Missy, the 34m Gilles Vaton designed Baiurdo VI - which took a podium place in Class B at last year’s event - and the ultra-competitive 108-foot Baltic built Win Win, an SYC overall winner in both 2019 and 2016.

Superyacht Cup Palma will open with superyacht registration and the captain’s briefing on Wednesday 29 June 2022, followed by three days of racing concluding on Saturday 2 July.

Challenge accepted - NYYC American Magic is back in the America’s Cup
The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron formally accepted the New York Yacht Club American Magic's challenge for the 37th America's Cup to be held in 2024 - the third additional challenge accepted for AC37.

"It is great to be back in the America’s Cup for AC37, and our pursuit of bringing the Trophy home remains the same," remarked Terry Hutchinson, president of sailing operations for American Magic.

“We've been preparing for AC37 from the moment our time came to an end at AC36 and are a deeply motivated group - all hands-on deck - ready to compete and ready to win."

Earlier this month, American Magic agreed to represent the New York Yacht Club at AC37 in a renewed collaboration to bring the America's Cup trophy, the Auld Mug, back to the United States.

American Magic's principals, Doug DeVos and Hap Fauth, shared their vision for the team to be an ongoing competitor in the America's Cup. They are committed to investing in technology, design, innovation, and talent to build a winning team and franchise for the long haul. -- Justin Chisholm

Killaloe Sailing Club to be Represented in Golden Globe Round the World Race 2022
On the 4th September, Limerick sailor Pat Lawless will begin the ‘Race of his Life’, sailing solo around the world in the Golden Globe Race 2022, non-stop and unassisted by technology other than a compass, sextant, the stars and the sun. And Killaloe Sailing Club are proud to have an association with newest club member Pat on his worldwide voyage, with the Club undertaking a successful fund-raiser for him last year.

As a supporting organisation, the club logo will be engraved onto the bulkhead of his boat. Pat is sailing in a 36ft Saltram Saga in an event no Irish person has managed to complete before now, though in the previous race in 2018, Gregor McGuckin of Malahide in a Biscay 36 managed to get as far as the Indian Ocean before being dismasted, while he was rewarded internationally with the prestigious Rod Stephens Seamanship Trophy of the Cruising Club of America for his heroic efforts - despite having only jury rig - to rescue another disabled entrant.

It’s the longest, loneliest sporting event in the World - nine months at sea alone in a small boat. It entails stepping back to the Golden Age of solo sailing, with no modern technology, sailing the race in the spirit of Brendan the Navigator and Conor O’Brien of Foynes, the first skipper to take a small boat around the world via the three great southern capes. An heir to this tradition, Pat Lawless grew up around boats learning to sail on the River Shannon, building his first boat at the age of just 12. And he has already sailed over 10,000 miles solo, while he is also no stranger to dinghy sailing.

The Golden Globe Race 2022 starts on 4th September, 2022 from Les Sables d’Olonne, France.

Cutty Sark Rig Climb Experience
For the first time since arriving in Greenwich in 1954, visitors to Cutty Sark will be able to climb the famous masts and enjoy views of the Thames and London like no other.

Starting with a briefing underneath the ship’s beautiful hull, those brave enough to take on the challenge will step up from the Main Deck onto the ship’s ratlines and climb up its shrouds, just as hundreds of sailors did during Cutty Sark’s long and fabled career at sea.

Visitors will traverse one of the ship’s lower yardarms before reaching the tops platform, taking in the view while standing amidst the rigging of a true London icon.

In true keeping with Cutty Sark’s reputation as the fastest sailing ship in the world, visitors will then experience something that not even the ship’s crew did: a controlled descent from the rigging, down to street level aside the ship.

Members can book early access tickets from 14 February 2022.
General sale tickets will go live on 21 February 2022.

Just over 11 months since Emirates Team New Zealand’s AC75 ‘Te Rehutai’ crossed the finish line to claim the 36th America’s Cup, its younger sister class- the AC40 is already in production.

While much of the world was having a well-earned break during the transition from 2021 into 2022 the 7 axis CNC machine at McConaghy Boats production facility was working 24/7 carving out the tooling for the hull of the new class. The AC40 hull shape is based on that of Te Rehutai- but is already a generational step forward incorporating a number of developments learned after the completion of AC36 last year.

In usual America’s Cup fashion, the AC40 design and production timeline has been highly condensed yet achievable due to a global collaboration led by Emirates Team New Zealand design team with Dan Bernasconi and Richard Meacham central to the management of the production process with Mark Evans Group Managing Director of McConaghy Boats.

“While the genesis of the AC40 project comes from the familiar design and innovation of the people within the Emirates Team New Zealand design department we have really had to push the limits by utilising a combination of the best of the New Zealand Marine industry as well as key offshore partnerships. Specialised elements like the rigs are being built by Southern Spars and the boat building talent we have at the ETNZ build facility are producing the foil arms. We also have a great partnership utilising the production power of an organisation like McConaghy Boats in China for the hulls, decks and fit out as well as North Sails Marine group with the aero package.” said Meacham.

The Gebroeders van Enkhuizen shipyard’s reputation spreads far and wide. On a recent yard visit, this newsletter saw a Noordkaper 46GT being prepared for delivery to an American owner in the US state of Washington. GT stands for Grand Tour, a model version that includes extras for comfort and makes it possible to sail the yacht with a small crew. The shipyard is building another Enksail NK 46GT for a Dutch customer.

“The boat for the US client goes to Seattle next year,” says Ronald van Enkhuizen. “Normally, the construction time is about 18 months, but because of the Covid restrictions and the requested styling of the interior, it took a little longer.”

The yard marks its 30th anniversary in 2022. It has to date delivered 21 Noordkapers. In several halls, it builds sailing and motor yachts and one-offs for individuals and other yards.

The newly formed superyacht design firm Isola Corvus has teamed up with German superyacht designer Beiderbeck Designs to unveil the 41-metre concept sailing yacht Velarca 135. With a design focused on the significant reduction of emissions and to increase sustainability in yachting.

Focused on owners that are traditionally interested in motor yachts, the yacht has been designed with features usually reserved for motor, rather than sailing, yachts. One such design feature is the expansive beach club, with mirrored lounges on either side and sliding doors opening to a indoor-outdoor living area with a central Jacuzzi.

Velarca

When underway the yacht's tender can be stored on the swim platform, while additional tenders and toys can be stored on the foredeck. Designed for families, the team has added a lift to the front bulkhead of the beach club, making it easy and safe to access all decks, even for those who with disabilities.

In addition to the various innovations in the yachts arrangement, her rig has also been specially designed to accommodate less experienced owners. The yacht features three self-tacking and hydraulically furling jib sails that can be released or furled with the press of a button in upper deck cockpit. To further increase safety, all lines have been placed on the mast to free the deck of ropes and winches, this also allows for more open space for sofas and sunbathing areas.

Internally she is able to accommodate as many as 12 guests in one configuration, while another option is to have a large owner's suite with an additional four cabins, accommodating as many as 10 guests in total. Nine crew are also accommodated in cabins situated on the lower decks, where the is a large utility room, including a washer dryer and dumbwaiter.

The yacht also comes with three different options for the intended use of the vessel, with the options of a fixed keel offering high performance, and a keel designed for cruising. -- Francesca Webster
