Tala takes IRC Zero
On the thirteenth day of the RORC Transatlantic Race David Collins' Botin 52 Tala (GBR) and Max Klink's Botin 52 Caro (CH) crossed the finish line outside Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina to complete the RORC Transatlantic Race. The closest battle in the eight-year history of the race came to a dramatic conclusion. The Austrian Ocean Race Project's VO65 Sisi (AUT) has also finished the race, with news dockside from skipper Gerwin Jansen. OCR 50 Club Five Oceans (FRA) skippered by Quentin le Nabour also finished the race in the early hours of the 20th of January.

Billed as the closest battle within the record fleet for the 2022 RORC Transatlantic Race, IRC Zero did not disappoint. The dismasting of Botin 56 Black Pearl (GER), which has safely made landfall in the Canaries, resulted in two hi-tech fifty-footers battling for class and the overall win.

Tala has won IRC Zero, completing the course in an elapsed time of 11 days 10 hrs 13 mins 9 secs. Tala is also ranked second overall, just over an hour behind the mighty Comanche after IRC time correction. Caro was just an hour behind Tala on the water - a virtual photo-finish after over 3,000nm of racing. Caro is a new Botin design taking part in only its second race and the first transatlantic. Caro is second in IRC Zero and third overall. Despite being disappointed not to win, the Caro team raised a cheer having completed the race. Caro and Tala are relishing the next battle, which will be in February at the RORC Caribbean 600.

Wight Vodka Best Sailors Bar: The King and Queen of Hamble UK
Quite Right Wight Mule A story from the staff and owners...

There are so many hilarious stories originating from this fine establishment which first sold alcohol, albeit illegally, in 1622. The first legal sales of alcohol started in 1745!

One of my favourite stories was from not that long ago!

Since 1987 the pub has had a laundrette which operated as a service for yachties who wanted clean gear. Many yachties will recall "taking a spin" in the giant dryers and being forgotten as they tumbled along on a "cycle" while their friends went back to the bar, for ...."ONE MORE DRINK".

One morning, in the 21st century, a drenched, worse for wear yachtsman arrived, asking, to wash his gear. He smelt like he'd been VERY ... seasick!!! He was given a cup of washing powder and the key to the laundry room and then was forgotten. About 20 minutes later he emerged... stark bollock naked, at the bar; by now the pub had filled up and had a fair number of customers. He patiently waited his turn to be served and then only requested more change to dry his now clean clothes; no more alcohol for him!

No one commented or even batted an eye, at the completely naked man leaning on the bar; the barman gave him the change and off he went back down to the laundry room.

BUT the landlady suspected, all was not well; so she popped her head in, only to find him drinking his own cans of cider (topping up). Without hesitation she removed his soaked clothes from the tumble dryer, dumped them at the back door, he was next, still naked, ejected into Rope Walk...... For not following licensing laws and drinking his own liquor on licenced premises ... (not for being naked!)

So many King and Queen stories but we still laugh about this one!

The celebratory drink created in honour of their win:

Quite Right Wight Mule
(The King & Queen's modern twist, on the classic Moscow mule)

Lots of Ice to start
50ml Wight Vodka
225ml Ginger Ale
A dash of Gingerbread Cane Syrup
Candied Ginger (One piece)
Generous squeeze of fresh Lime

Too good to keep - Seaquest Catamarans
Seaquest Catamarans Champion raceboat designers Carkeek Design Partners thought they were drawing a new one-off world cruising cat for an experienced yachtbuilder's personal use. Things didn't quite turn out that way...

Some of the best yachts are created when a raceboat builder wants to go off cruising with his family and has a boat designed for personal use. Thus it was (initially at least) for the Carkeek-designed Seaquest 46, which has exactly the right sort of pedigree. It's built by Mike Eaton, whose highly regarded racing monohulls such as the Prima 38 and RP36 have proven themselves to be excellent all-rounders. Shaun Carkeek's wide-ranging successes across many strands of highperformance sailing are already well-known to most...

However, instead of going off cruising himself, Eaton has put those plans on hold and put the Seaquest 46 into production. It's the first model in a new range of catamarans, built in Dubai where his shipyard has been based for most of the last 20 years. Before he'd even started, the first two Seaquest 46s had already been sold off plan.

Cowes Week 2022 - Entries open 21st January
Cowes Week Ltd (CWL) is delighted to announce that entries for Cowes Week 2022 will open at 12 noon on Friday 21 January, with Super Early Bird discounts available until 18 February.

A new one design class for Sonata's has been introduced to reflect its strong activity in Cowes over the past few years. We have also added a class for the FarEast 28 who are intending to hold their European Championships at Cowes Week.

On shore, the event will continue its legendary and wide ranging social programme kicking off with the Cowes Week Opening Party on Saturday 30 July, for which DJ Mark Covell has already been re- booked.

Based on competitor feedback, an updated pricing structure has been introduced for Black Group boats for 2022 which has been radically altered to make it fairer across the board for different sized boats. The pricing bands are now broken down into 1 m increments and start at 7m rather than 9m which will lead to more consistency in what different boats are paying, irrespective of their overall length.

The team at Cowes Week look forward to welcoming competitors and visitors to the Regatta and to the sunny Isle of Wight for race day 1 on Saturday July 30th. The overall prizegiving will be on Friday August 5th.

Virtual Lecture: "You Can Call Him Mike: How a Vanderbilt Transformed Yachting" by John Rousmaniere
Its name suggests that yachting is as changeless as the sea itself. Yet every now and then our ancient pastime is transformed. One of its radicals was a multimillionaire member of a family that usually personifies the cautious establishment. Harold Vanderbilt won the Cup in 1930, 1934, and 1937 with boats, crews, strategies, and tactics all far different from those of traditional ultra-cautious owners and sailors. Having transformed the Cup, with equal boldness he modernized sailing's racing rules. His example of innovation and daring survives today.

John Rousmaniere is an American writer and author of 30 historical, technical, and instructional books on sailing, yachting history, New York history, business history, and the histories of clubs, businesses, and other organizations.

Silence of the Lambs
The January ritual of planning the sailing season is in full-swing. First in the diary is the Round the Island Race on the 25th June followed by a number of double-handed and fully crewed passage races - West Princessa, Island Double, Lonely Tower...ooh Weymouth and back, that sounds fun. I'm fusing yacht clubs from all around the South Coast and it's mind-bendingly complex. But 2022 is shaping up to be a cracking year.

I also received my 'digital' Laser/ILCA class membership - oh how very 'of the time' it is to get a digital card, plastic be gone - and I'm busy eyeing Masters championships which look like a whole lot of fun even from the back of the fleet, unless I pull my finger out, but the one endeavour that I am most looking forward to is a planned circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight by Laser in July.

You may laugh, but I am actually training quite hard for it. Cardio on an indoor static bike, brutally hard 5km treadmill sessions on an impulse purchase post-Christmas and what I can only describe as absolute torture on my hiking bench where it's taking a very long time to get even close to comfortable.
