Wight Vodka A late hectic flurry of voting has pushed one of our top ten to a big victory in our 13th annual competition.

The winner is The King & Queen in Hamble…yet again!! Our second two time winner...

Second place: The Crab Shell in Stamford, Connecticut

Third place: The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, Hamilton Bermuda

Janet Bradley, the owner, in the last week of the competition:

"Thank you for a fabulous competition again! We've created a cocktail to celebrate and it's going down a storm! Many thanks again for all you do to promote us Yachtie Bars the world over!"

And a further quote from Janet the day she was announced the winner:

"OMG!!!! I didn't know it had finished …It's such amazing news after such a tough time! We were still closed last week due to Covid!

My staff were so excited, they made different cocktails (the chosen one is delicious – great winter one! )…..and the QR code we put on the tables was a got everyone talking!\

Last evening we hosted a dinner/ team meeting for the RYA and another international yachting company (two separate events) and they all got on board using the QR codes so a lucky day for sure!!!

I'll throw an impromptu staff party at 6 this evening and take some photos; they will be so pleased …I'll call them in for a meeting!"

Look for the drink recipe in Friday's issue...

Caro & Tala duke it out: RORC Transatlantic Race - Day 12
On the twelfth day of the RORC Transatlantic Race a thrilling finish is shaping up for Caro and Tala in IRC Zero, with the potential for both teams to take the overall lead under IRC for the RORC Transatlantic Race Trophy. Volvo 70 I Love Poland is the latest team to finish the race and the third Maxi to do so. The Austrian Ocean Race Project's VO65 Sisi is expected to finish today (Wednesday). Twenty one boats are still racing with news in this report from Tonnerre de Glen, Challenge Ocean, Juno and Jangada.

IRC ONE:
Ross Applebey's Oyster 48 Scarlet Oyster (GBR) is the top ranked boat in class after IRC time correction, but four boats are very much in the running for class victory. On the water, Jacques Pelletier's Milon 41 L'Ange de Milon (FRA) is just in front of Andrew Hall's Lombard 46 Pata Negra (GBR). Both teams have about 800 miles to go, doing 10 knots of boat speed pointing straight at Grenada. Two hundred miles behind, Richard Palmer's JPK 1010 Jangada (GBR), racing Two-Handed with Jeremy Waitt, is having a stellar race and is ranked second in IRC One and first in IRC Two-Handed.

Jangada published a live satellite interview with fellow Two-Handed campaigner, Shirley Robertson. Richard Palmer commented: "We are enjoying it and into the routine. Rest is a key one, making sure we stay sharp and make all the right decisions. Jeremy and I meet for lunch and that provides a break from the routine. Racing is intense and the lunch gives us an opportunity to take a break and share a few moments." Robertson suggests that this has been a 'navigator's race'.

Performance Un-Turboing from Harken. The perfect winter project.
Harken Walking the docks at last year's offshore events, we noticed a lot of boats had been 'Turbo'd" the previous winter. It was impressive. And the performance gains often incredible. That started us thinking. When weather conditions change quickly (Translation: it hits the fan.) how strategically and safely can these boats "Unturbo"? Experience shows, it's easy to shred minutes of hard-earned gains having to run off to shorten sail in a squall.

For years Harken BattCar systems have been so low-friction, sailors reef without incident. Think about doing that with your new monster fat-top main sailing on the rum line with most everyone still on the rail. BattCars add a safety factor that can be critical. What's more, they provide the option to hold onto more sail area longer, knowing you can get it out of there fast. These days, our available Slug Track makes retrofitting your grooved spar with a Battcar system a realistic DIY project. Around Harken, we say there's no single rig change you can add that adds so much safety. Maybe this is the year for your strategic 'Unturbo' project.

Victory for Pindar and team in first event of RYA Winter Match Racing Series
The first event in the RYA Winter Match Racing Series saw James Pindar and his team mastering the challenging light wind conditions and the competition to take the win.

The Winter Match Racing 1 event over the weekend (15-16 January 2022) saw nine teams battling it out in RS21s at London's Queen Mary Sailing Club, which saw a full round robin completed despite a frequent lack of breeze, 30 degree wind shifts and thick fog.

Pindar and his team of Jem Lawson, Jamie Webb, Arthur Henderson and George Hopes won overall from Ted Blowers, who was racing with Fraser Woodley, Bobby Hewitt and Robby Boyd.

The top two teams finished on equal points – both having won seven from their eight matches – but Pindar claimed event victory having won in the match against Blowers. A close third overall was James Morson and his team of Harry Frith, Ben Webb and Brendan Lynch, who won six of their eight matches.

The full results from the event can be found here and the #rockupandrace series now continues with entry open for:

12-13 March 2022 - Winter Match Racing 2, 707s at Royal Corinthian YC, Burnham-on-Crouch
19-20 March 2022 - Winter Match Racing 3, RS21s at Ullswater YC
26-27 March 2022 - Women's Winter Match Racing, Elliott 6ms, WPNSA

Groundhog Day at Southernmost Regatta
The third day of the 2022 Southernmost Regatta delivered more sunshine and solid winds for two more races across the five fleets. David Team's Vesper (GL52), Bobby Julien's Dingbat (J/70), Peter Duncan's Rasta Mixta (Melges 24, and Gwen Fragomen's Interlodge IV (ORC) retain their lead, but the J/111 class now has Ian Hill's Sitella with a one point edge over Andrew and Sedgwick Ward's Bravo.

Racing is planned for January 17-22.

Vendee Globe 2024: Good IMOCA Boats Are Very Rare
At a little less than three years before the start of the Vendee Globe 2024, the number of boats available for sale or charter reduces from week to week. Tip & Shaft took time to investigate what good Imocas are still available.

A year after the finish of the Vendee Globe 2020, the next edition which is set to start on November 10, 2024, is shaping up to be a race at full capacity. The SAEM Vendee, organizer of the round the world race has already expanded the maximum entry to 40. A big number of projects are already well under way whilst others are still being developed. But the essential question, of 'what boat?' arises. It is clear that the number of available Imocas is minimal, indeed they are increasingly rare. The 60 footers of the 2004 generation are no longer eligible - which notably eliminates the boats that Pip Hare, Didac Costa and Alexia Barrier raced in 2020.

Of the 13 known new boats only the third to be built by Black Pepper to Sam Manuard's design (set to be launched in January 2023), does not yet have a skipper. "I do not yet know if I will keep it as the the owner and charter it or I whether I will sell it," Michel de Franssu the owner of the yard tells Tip & Shaft. "To date, 4-5 skippers have expressed their interest and some are more and some less advanced in securing their budget." The price quoted? "5 million euros, ready to sail".

Of the 8 2020 build generation Imocas, Corum L'Epargne (Nicolas Troussel) and DMG Mori (Kojiro Shiraishi) are both still the hands of the same skippers. 4 are (or will be) sailed by new skippers: Louis Burton has the former L'Occitaine, Apivia will be sold after the Route du Rhum to Banque Populaire for Clarisse Cremer, the former Hugo Boss of Alex Thomson is now being sailed by Alan Roura, Sebastien Simon and Vincent Riou have bought Arkea Paprec, and Simon from Les Sables is looking for new partners.

Trimaran Use It Again off the coast of Brazil
Two weeks after the start of the Round the World Record in Reverse, Romain Pilliard and Alex Pella are sailing this Tuesday at the latitude of Salvador de Bahia off the coast of Brazil, after crossing the Equator on Sunday morning. The crew of the trimaran Use It Again! has covered 4,400 miles (8,000 kilometres) since leaving Lorient and now has just over 1,000 miles ahead of the Record reference time (122 days).

Sunday January 16, Use It Again! has therefore officially moved to the Southern Hemisphere. For this first crossing of the Equator, Romain and Alex were gathered at the chart table to share this symbolic moment together and respect the famous tradition of the offering to Neptune.

Since Sunday, the Trimaran Use It Again! has found some wind and our two sailors are enjoying ideal weather conditions for their descent on the South Atlantic. Ellen MacArthur's former boat, reconditioned according to the principles of the circular economy, can finally stretch its legs and averages between 15 and 20 knots to the delight of its crew, as evidenced by the video below received this morning.
