Battle on for overall win - RORC Transatlantic Race
Day 10 - 0900 UTC, Grenada: On the tenth day of the RORC Transatlantic Race, 21 teams are still racing in the Atlantic for the overall win and to claim the RORC Transatlantic Race Trophy. Racing under the IRC Rating Rule, Comanche's record run has now set the bar for the monohulls to beat. Out in the Atlantic, battles for class honours and private duels are raging, and the race for the overall win is far from over.

In the MOCRA class, the latest multihull to finish is Antoine Rabaste's Maxi Multihull Ultim'emotion 2 (FRA), which crossed the finish line outside Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina in Grenada just before sunset on 16th January. The 80ft trimaran screamed into Grenada at a speed of over 26 knots!

IRC SUPER ZERO:
The Volvo 70 L4 Trifork (DEN), with Joern Larsen at the helm, is 171nm from the finish and expected in Grenada at approximately 23:00 UTC. L4 Trifork is estimated to be 15 hours behind Comanche's time corrected under IRC. Volvo 70 I Love Poland (POL), skippered by Grzegorz Baranowski, is currently third in class and expected to finish the race on Tuesday 18th January.

IRC ZERO:
A photo-finish is on the cards for two high-performance 50-footers that are battling for class honours 750 miles from the finish. While David Collins' Botin IRC 52 Tala (GBR) is ranked first in class, Max Klink's Botin 52 Caro (CH) is leading on the water by just five miles. Both teams are expected to finish the race at around midday UTC on 20th January. Dominique Tian's Ker 46 Tonnerre de Glen (FRA) is just over 1,000 miles from the finish and sitting third in class.

There is also good news from the dismasted Botin 56 Black Pearl, which has made landfall at El Hierro in the Canary Islands after Stefan Jentzsch and his team motor-sailed 800nm to safety.

IRC ONE:
Ross Applebey's Oyster 48 Scarlet Oyster (GBR) is the provisional leader after time correction, with Richard Palmer's JPK 10.10 Jangada (GBR), racing Two-Handed with Jeremy Waitt, in second. Ranked third is the wily Jacques Pelletier at the helm of his Milon 41 L'Ange de Milon (FRA). Andrew Hall's Lombard 46 Pata Negra (GBR) leads on the water and is currently fourth in class.

Little giant - Oyster Yachts
Oyster Yachts The new Oyster 595 takes many features - technical and styling - from its bigger sisters to create an exceptional mid-size yacht which feels much larger and more comfortable than the sum of the parts

Some boats stand out as milestones for their builders and the Oyster 595 looks set to be one of those. The second new model launched since Oyster was bought by the tech entrepreneur Richard Hadida, the 595 is already being recognised as far more than simply a scaled-up version of the 565. While each might share the same distinctive modern looks, climbing aboard them makes it easier to see what sets them apart.

The 595 was always intended to be the second part of a double act in which Oyster took key lessons from bigger boats in the range, particularly the 885 and integrated them into a new generation. Skilful adaptations of these features meant that the 565 quickly became dubbed by some as the pocket superyacht. And while the 595 continues this trend, she is also the flag bearer for several big and significant steps forward that have taken place behind the scenes.

Round Britain & Ireland Race - now with a Fully Crewed class
A fully crewed class is now open for entries and will run alongside the classic Double Handed RB&I. At approaching 30 entries, 8 of which are multihulls, this will be a great race for all those competing. With limited spaces of just 50 for the entire fleet, the RB&I is expected to be a sell out.

Early entry fee discounts have been extended for the RB&I and will now close on March 1st. The maximum LOA has also been extended to 70ft. Whilst not compulsory, crew changes of up to 50% can be made during the stop overs in Galway and Blyth. This is ONLY applicable for fully crewed boats.

The fully crewed class is an exciting addition to the original RB&I race, allowing many more sailors to be part of a team racing around the British Isles without the need to take excessive time off work but able to experience some of one of the toughest races in the offshore calendar.

Starting on 29th May 2022, the new course will have stop overs in Galway, Lerwick and Blyth, making this the most accessible race of its kind to date.

Current entries and notes of interest will soon be posted on the website.

For further information and to enter either race please contact the organising team on

12th Monaco Optimist Team Race: Another American victory
They did it - after their victory in 2020, the American national team clinched another win at the 12th Monaco Optimist Team Race that saw 60 young sailors out on the water from 15 nations. Organised by Yacht Club de Monaco with support from FxPro, Eventica, Fonbet, technical clothing supplier Slam and boatyard Erplast, this regatta has been a reference for international sailors in this discipline since 2010.

Strong on strategy, the Americans laid their cards on the table from the start, boosted by the presence of Gil Hackel, World Vice-Champion 2021. The results say it all: 14 wins out of 14 match races, a domination without equal that swept them into the semi-finals, confident against the Germans. "We came here to win. We've worked hard to get here," explained a delighted Gil Hackel.

From their side, the Croatians from Jedriličarski Klub Uljanik (Uljanik Sailing Club) showed the same degree of concentration. After beating Finland in the semi-finals, they fell at the final hurdle to the Stars 'n Stripes ambassadors and leave Monaco in 2nd place overall.

As for the Germans, they stayed in the game throughout the regatta to finish 3rd just ahead of the Fins who paid dearly for a few errors in positioning to come in 4th. The Monegasques represented by Matteo Asscher, Ludovica Bonelli, Alexandra Santelli and Simon Prot finished 7th. All now have another year to fine tune their skills ready for the 13th edition scheduled for 11-15 January 2023.

Podium Monaco Optimist Team Race 2022:
1st: US National Team (USA)
2nd: Jedrilicarski Klub Uljanik (Croatia)
3rd: Chiemsee Yacht Club (Germany)

Australian Contender Championship
Gosford turned on a great day racing today with wind better than forecast and a pleasing 24 entries. The was a nice 8-13 Knots North Easterly breeze, no delays and both races had clean starts.

Conditions suited Matt Mulder who took two bullets today, sailing two perfect races. Sitting second overall is Mark Bulka with a 4th & 2nd. Leading around the last mark, a big wind shift saw Bulka lose the lead to Mulder.

Hot on there heels is ACT Contender veteran Paul Cohen taking a 2nd & 5th. Very consistent was Lindsay Irwin sitting in 4th, ready to pounce on day 2 with a 3rd & 4th.

Tomorrow heats 3 & 4 are scheduled with a forecast of 13-15 knots from the South West. -- Ross Hansen

Strong Winds and Strong Wins to Wrap up Sail Melbourne

The 49ers were one such class, where a countback was required to anoint Tom Needham and Joel Turner winners ahead of Jim Colley and Shaun Connor after the finished locked on 35 points.

Western Australian Institute of Sport athlete Zoe Thomson put in a commanding performance in her ILCA 6 class win, closely followed by Tokyo Olympian Mara Stransky. Chris Charlwood and Amelia Catt were the standout winners in the Mixed 470 class.

As a new addition to Sail Melbourne, The iQFOiL class brought a heightened level of action to the regatta as they prepare to be included in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

It has now been confirmed that Discovery Shipyard has gone into voluntary liquidation. The COVID-19 pandemic is being blamed for the closure of the yard. All 77 staff have been made redundant.

Managing director John Burnie, financial director David Winduss and director George Gill have all resigned. Werner Schnaebele, who owns Binti Marine Holdings, the holding company of the reformed Discovery Shipyard, remains the only active director of the shipyard.

Neil Gostelow and Steve Absolom from Interpath Advisory were appointed joint liquidators of Discovery Shipyard on 14 January 2022.

In a statement, Interpath Advisory said despite new orders coming in during 2021, Discovery was 'restricted in its ability to manufacture to schedule by a combination of the ending of certain government support schemes and the well-documented global supply chain issues which caused delays in the availability of building materials, coupled with wider constraints on working capital.' -- Katy Stickland

Organizers of the Toronto International Boat Show (TIBS) have announced that the annual event, scheduled to be held in-person, has cancelled for 2022.

Preparations had already been completed for the Show, with move-in set to begin in less than 30 days. Following months of strategic preparation, North America's Largest Indoor Boat Show was ready to unveil an all-new re-imagined floorplan. The event was set to showcase more than 300 exhibitors, plus 250 seminars & workshops inside the Enercare Centre at Exhibition Place. A new initiative for the show was the launch of a 5000 square foot Boater's Resource Centre, featuring 15 industry and government organizations.

The rapidly developing Omicron variant and newly mandated capacity limitations at large events in Ontario meant that the in-person show could not move forward as planned from January 22 - 30.

This year's Virtual Toronto International Boat Show will be held over five days, running January 26 - 30. Programming details will be announced soon.
