RORC Transatlantic Race - A game of chess
The RORC Transatlantic Race enters the fifth day with the potential for a real twist of fate at the front of the RORC fleet. Peter Cunningham’s MOD70 PowerPlay (CAY) still leads the multihulls, but as the first boat into an area of light winds, the ‘hunters’ are catching up with their prey. Jason Carroll’s MOD70 Argo (USA) and Giovanni Soldini’s Multi70 Maserati (ITA) are homing in on PowerPlay. The 100ft Maxi Comanche (CAY), skippered by Mitch Booth is over 100 miles ahead with one hand on the IMA Trophy. However, Volvo 70 L4 Trifork (DEN), helmed by Joern Larsen is reeling in Comanche. L4 Trifork is riding on better pressure from the northwest. News from the fleet includes the latest from Gunboat 68 Tosca (USA), co-skippered by Ken Howery & Alex Thomson.

Comanche’s navigator Will Oxley (2100 UTC 11 JAN):

“1,680nm to go. It has been a very messy Atlantic weather pattern and that looks set to continue into the finish. So far so good. We are happy with our more southerly approach in comparison to L4 Trifork. For the moment they are sailing very fast in close proximity to the low. It looks quite difficult though to extricate oneself from the north; one of the reasons we rejected this option. We watch with interest to see how it plays out. The low does seem to be playing havoc with the fleet. We are sailing in 10-15 knot northerlies with the low still disrupting the trade winds. We think we can join the dots into the finish OK but we will have to be careful to avoid some very light air on the 13th. ETA still 16th January.”

NSW 18ft Skiff Championship The Australian 18 Footers League's 21-boat fleet will be back on Sydney Harbour this Sunday (January 16) when the club will conduct Race 6 of the eight-race 2021-22 NSW 18ft Skiff Championship.

When racing went into recess after Race 5 of the series on December 19, the Yandoo team of John Winning, Mike Kennedy and Fang Warren held a one point lead over the current Australian champion, Tech2 team of Jack Macartney, Charlie Wyatt and Lewis Brake.

Allowing for each team discarding its worst performance to date, Yandoo has a net total of eight points. Tech2 is on nine points.

Race 1 winner, Noakesailing (Sean Langman, Ed Powys and Josh Porebski) is just one more point further back in third place.

Only seven points separates a group of five teams battling for fourth place.

Jordan Girdis' Fisher & Paykel is presently in fourth place on net 20 points, ahead of Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Steve Thomas) on 21, Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price) 24, Finport Finance (Keagan York) 25 and Burrawang-Young Henrys (Simon Nearn) on 27 points.

The reigning Giltinan champion Smeg (Michael Coxon) is ninth on 33 points following a series of injuries and racing mishaps, which have destroyed the team's chances.

Costa del Sol AC37 venue bid is in negotiation
Leading Spanish sailing journalist Juame Soler confirms on his blog that the Spanish port of Malaga has been working discreetly for several weeks to host the 37th America's Cup.

The regatta bid, to be staged in 2024, has been confirmed by the Mayor of the city at the heart of the Costa del Sol, Francisco de la Torre says the event that would provide "high economic performance in exchange for moderate investment in infrastructure."

The report makes it clear that private sponsorships are sought to reduce the public contribution.

Later Soler reports that Daniel Pérez, the leader of the PSOE, as the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party in the Malaga City Council and provincial secretary of the party, has indicated that they must study the circumstances of the Cup in other cities, and has asked De la Torre not to "always ask the central government to seek investment" and be "more serious".

The Andalusian city, located just 65nm from Gibraltar at the entrance to the Mediterranean, is the third Spanish city to be associated with the hosting of the 37th America's Cup. -- Richard Gladwell/Sail-World NZ

The Ocean Race discovers microfibres are rife in Europe's seas
New research from the world's toughest sailing race has found microplastics, and in particular microfibres, to be prevalent across the length and breadth of the continent.

All 36 water samples collected around Europe, including in the Baltic Sea, the English Channel, along the Atlantic coastline and in the Mediterranean Sea, were found to contain microfibres - tiny plastic fibres that enter the environment from manufacturing, washing and wearing synthetic clothes. Fibres also originate from car tyres(1), ending up in the sea after heavy rain and run-off, and fragmented fishing gear and lines.

The data, which was captured by sailing teams competing in the first edition of The Ocean Race Europe, found, on average, Europe's seas contain 139 microplastic particles per cubic meter. 83% of these particles are microfibres, with the remaining being fragments from the degradation of larger plastic items such as plastic bottles, packaging and microbeads in toiletries. Three of the samples (two from the Channel and one from the Mediterranean Sea) contained microfibres exclusively.

The Ocean Race measured microplastics in the last edition of the round-the-world Race in 2017-18 in a pioneering move that combined racing and science. This summer, the Race sought to go a step further and team up with scientific bodies, GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and Utrecht University, to discover more about the source of the microplastics by analysing whether they are fibres or fragments.

The Ocean Race Europe scientific data collection activity was endorsed by the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, a global movement to unlock the knowledge needed to reverse the cycle of decline in ocean health and create improved conditions for sustainable development of the ocean.

The Ocean Race's innovative science programme has been developed in collaboration with 11th Hour Racing, Premier Partner of The Ocean Race and Founding Partner of the Racing with Purpose sustainability programme.
