RORC Transatlantic Race: Rolling in the Deep
Peter Cunningham’s MOD70 PowerPlay (CAY) is over halfway and just two hours outside multihull race record pace. The 100ft Maxi Comanche (CAY), skippered by Mitch Booth, is 1900 miles from Grenada and well inside monohull race record pace. The majority of the RORC fleet are north of the rhumb line. To the south an area of light winds stretches about 1000 miles across the direct route. Four days into the RORC Transatlantic Race and the sight of land is now just a distant memory for the 29 teams racing to Grenada. The crews have settled into life at sea, rolling in the deep, their boat speed the metric for success.

IRC One Richard Palmer’s JPK 10.10 Jangada (GBR), racing two-handed with Jeremy Waitt, is estimated to lead the class after IRC time correction. Ross Applebey’s Oyster 48 Scarlet Oyster (GBR) is ranked second by less than an hour. Andrew Hall’s Lombard 46 Pata Negra (GBR) is leading on the water and ranked third after IRC correction, by just 16 minutes from Jacques Pelletier’s Milon 41 L'Ange De Milon (FRA), which is representing the Yacht Club de France. It will be an interesting 24 hours for the leaders in the class as they negotiate an area of light wind right across the racecourse. Pata Negra leads a pack of boats to the south, including Christopher Daniel’s J/122 Juno (GBR), Martin Westcott’s Swan 57 Equinoccio (CHI), and Carlo Vroon’s Hinckley 52 Diana (NED). If the southerly boats can find a way through the light winds, they will make huge gains on the boats to the north.

Remy Gerin’s 65ft Spirit of Tradition sloop Faiaoahe (FRA) representing the Yacht Club de France is back in the race. The two-handed team of Remy and Bernard Jeanne-Beylot suspended racing on day three to fix a problem with their auto-pilot, all within the race rules, and now Faiaoahe is back in action on the course.

Reverse Round the World Record - D + 7: Christian Dumard takes stock
A week after the start of the Reverse Round the World Record, Romain Pilliard and Alex Pella are sailing at the latitude of Cape Verde. The crew of the trimaran Use It Again! has covered 2,250 miles (4,000 kilometers) since leaving Lorient and is expected to cross the Equator this Saturday at the end of the day.

We take stock with Christian Dumard, router and meteorologist of Use It Again! , The third man of this record:

"Since leaving the Bay of Biscay, Romain Pilliard and Alex Pella are sailing in winds ranging from North to North-East, between 8 and 25 knots. The descent of the North Atlantic is therefore in line with pre-departure forecasts. Only the development of a large zone of calm in the north of Cape Verde forced them to follow the African coast between the Canaries and the south of Mauritania. The wind shifted to the north at the end of last night, allowing them to sail on starboard tack towards the entrance to the doldrums that they should reach on Thursday. The latter presents itself in a fairly classic way with a little more wind in its western part, areas of squalls and areas of calm. Since this morning, we are starting to look at the weather systems in southern Brazil to anticipate the positioning at the level of the equator in order to pass more or less far from the Brazilian coast. "

RYA Welcomes New Chief Executive Sara Sutcliffe
It’s a new year and ‘all change’ at the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) as the team today (Monday 10 January) welcomes Sara Sutcliffe MBE as the organisation’s new chief executive.

Sutcliffe takes over from interim chief executive David Strain, who assumed the role after the departure of Sarah Treseder for the UK Chamber of Shipping, as previously reported on Afloat.ie.

Sutcliffe spent her formative years working in the City of London at leading global law firm Baker & McKenzie. With a keen interest in sport, she later took the opportunity to join the British Olympic Association (BOA) developing her legal and management skills and attended four Olympic Games as General Counsel to Team GB.

She was also instrumental in the London 2012 bid, working closely with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) and the Mayor of London to secure the hosting of the Games.

Vendee Globe Updates
Tanguy Le Turquais has bought Groupe Apicil for 2024

With an extensive offshore track record including a second on this year's 2021 Transat en Double Concarneau - Saint-Barthelemy racing with Corentin Douguet, and with five seasons in the Figaro class to his credit Tanguy le Turquais now aims to be at the start of the Vendee Globe 2024. Le Turquais who is Clarisse Cremer's husband has taken a good first step by getting himself a reliable , proven boat, in the shape of Groupe-Apicil the boat which Damien Seguin sailed to 7th in the Vendee 2020-2021. The powerful monohull with straight daggerboards was launched in 2007 for Marc Thiercelin and DCNS. Le Turquais is looking for sponsors.

Guirec Soudee has bought OMIA Water Family for the 2024 race
French adventurer-navigator Guirec Soudee made a name for himself sailing round the world on a robust 11.80m steel monohull, dating from 1983 which was renamed Yvinec, the name of the Breton island. where he grew up. He also rowed across the Atlantic, east to west on an 8-meter boat purpose designed. Soudee says that he has already spent 670 days at sea alone, or almost, since he has usually taken his ever faithful red hen Monique with him.

President of the jury of the Marin of the Year 2021 of the FFVoile, Soudee has bought OMIA-Water Family from Benjamin Dutreux and he now hopes to be able to enter the Route du Rhum and fulfil all qualification stages for the Vendee Globe 2024.

Yoann Richomme will skipper a new Paprec Arkea IMOCA
Experienced ocean racing sponsors Paprec and Arkea are extending their joint collaboration with a new skipper, Yoann Richomme who will have a new build, latest generation Imoca for the next Vendee Globe. Richomme is a double winner of La Solitaire, Class 40 winner on the last Route du Rhum and more rcently won the VO65 class on The Ocean Race Europe. Richomme was a regular commentator on the last Vendee Globe

The design of the new Paprec Arkea will be a partnership of Antoine Koch working with the Finot-Conq group. The Paprec Arkea project will also work closely with Thomas Ruyant and his team, TR Racing. The two projects plan to create synergies to move forward faster and better together, especially in tuning and testing together but the immediate gain is to Paprec Arkea as they will have some fast track information which will help Richomme and team get up to speed quickly.

Two engineers have already joined the subsidiary newly created by the boat's two title partners and managed by Romain Menard: Gautier Levisse is responsible for the design office and Simon Troël takes charge of technical manager.

The muolds of the boat must be delivered by the Vannes shipyard Multiplast next January; the construction of Paprec Arkea will be completed one year later.

Wight Vodka Best Sailor's Bar
The Green Parrot Our first top ten bar from the Bahamas is The Green Parrot:

"The Green Parrot started as a grill top at the Hurricane Hole Marina Bar. As the word quickly spread about the delicious fare, we had to expand, open new branches and we haven't stopped growing since! In 2006 we opened in our current larger home on East Bay St., overlooking Nassau Harbour. We have quickly become a world famous establishment for visitors & locals looking for great authentic island cuisine as well as a wonderful atmosphere."

A very lively website gives some visual clues to the friendliness factor. That and the ample drink specials, including ones served in mason jars.

Here's one that will loosen the tongue.. The Squawker:

Vodka, gin, tequila, triple sec, bacardi 151, simple syrup, lime juice, sprite and orange juice

Voting for this year's Best Sailor's Bar continues for one more week until midnight UTC January 19.

Roaring RORC
If proof were required as to why the Royal Ocean Racing Club is the premier club of our time, look no further than the RORC Transatlantic Race. How they have pulled off the most sublime communications approach is something else – they are literally everywhere. TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn – you just can’t escape the media upload that is bringing the action, the tracking and the stories so thunderously to our attention. On paper it’s just a quick flick across the pond from Lanzarote to the Caribbean but wow, RORC’s unbelievable press team, led by the sublime Trish Jenkins and word-smithed by Louay Habib, has really captured something special.

I urge you to watch the start onboard Powerplay and not come away thinking: ‘crikey, that’s full-on’ or have a look at the pictures of Comanche at full arc and go: ‘yeah that’s pretty special.’

It was an awesome spectacle of high-end yacht racing, the likes of which only a few are lucky enough and talented enough to experience. And shoreside, it actually looked like a whole lot of fun.

Global Solo Challenge reaches 40 entries!
After the quiet Christmas period, 2022 started with good news for the Global Solo Challenge.

First, we received two new entries bringing the total to 40. Another half a dozen skippers are intending to enter in the coming months. Several more are still doing their homework to decide if the project is feasible considering work, family and finances. We can only expect the total number of entries to continue growing.

We can also anticipate that we will be making a significant sponsorship announcement in a few weeks. We are delighted to have secured such support and endorsement relatively early ahead of the event. Other negotiations are in the pipeline and will hopefully come to fruition soon.

The resources will be essential in achieving our next goal: creating a multi-language editorial room. We are in the process of selecting resources with the competencies required to handle the complex workflow of information from skippers, organisers, external writers, all requiring translations, a coherent content plan and the ability to deliver the event to the public in an enjoyable way both on the website and through social media channels. -- Marco Nannini

Entry opens for RYA/BUSA Women’s Team Racing Championships
Entries have opened for the RYA and BUSA Women’s Team Racing Championships, which will take place at Budworth Sailing Club over the weekend of 19/20 February 2022.

Budworth SC in the heart of Cheshire is looking forward to welcoming teams from across the UK for what is expected to be one of the biggest team racing events of the year.

The RYA Women’s Team Racing National Championship, incorporating the BUSA Women’s Team Racing Championship, is for teams of six sailors who identify as female, with racing in Firefly dinghies which will be provided for the event.

Teams are invited to represent their club, locale or sailing organisation in the RYA Women’s Team Racing National Championship. University or higher education teams may also compete for the BUSA Women’s Team Racing Championship.

Competitors will be battling it out to see if anyone can take either or both trophies, which last year saw Rutland HYDRA youth team crowned national champions and Cambridge University winning the BUSA title, after Oxford University claimed the double at the previous event in 2019.

Online entry is now open and limited to 18 teams allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, with would-be competitors urged to enter as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
