America's Cup: New York Yacht Club expected to re-enter with American Magic
The New York Yacht Club, which in July 2021 made a surprise announcement that they had chosen to run with Stars+Stripes, a late challenger for the 36th America's Cup, and in October announced they were "pausing" their America's Cup efforts, is expected to announce within a few hours, that they will be re-joining with American Magic.

Sail-World understands that Olympic Gold medalist, Paul Goodison will be announced as skipper/helmsman. Although a British passport holder and National, Goodison qualifies to sail for the team by virtue of the fact that he was part of the American Magic team for the 36th America's Cup, and is therefore eligible to sail for the same team in AC37. -- Richard Gladwell

Round Britain & Ireland Race - now with a Fully Crewed class
A fully crewed class is now open for entries and will run alongside the classic Double Handed RB&I. At approaching 30 entries, 8 of which are multihulls, this will be a great race for all those competing. With limited spaces of just 50 for the entire fleet, the RB&I is expected to be a sell out.

Early entry fee discounts have been extended for the RB&I and will now close on March 1st. The maximum LOA has also been extended to 70ft. Whilst not compulsory, crew changes of up to 50% can be made during the stop overs in Galway and Blyth. This is ONLY applicable for fully crewed boats.

The fully crewed class is an exciting addition to the original RB&I race, allowing many more sailors to be part of a team racing around the British Isles without the need to take excessive time off work but able to experience some of one of the toughest races in the offshore calendar.

Starting on 29th May 2022, the new course will have stop overs in Galway, Lerwick and Blyth, making this the most accessible race of its kind to date.

Current entries and notes of interest will soon be posted on the website.

For further information and to enter either race please contact the organising team on

MailASail OSTAR and Twostar Race
The 60th Anniversary OSTAR race sponsored by MailASail now has entries numbering 16 and a number of boats showing an expression of interest. Combine this with the TWOSTAR race potential entry of 8, then we have a truly impressive international field of adventurers who are now working on their qualifying process.

It is our aim to make this a great race, so in order to tempt those who are still on the fence we are extending the Early entry Discount to March 1st.

This will already be the best entry for many years in what will be an historic edition of the race.

Positive Changes for Edgartown Race Weekend
Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard: Edgartown Yacht Club has scheduled its 2022 Edgartown Race Weekend for June 23-25, shifting the popular three-day event from its typical July time slot to “shoulder season” on Martha’s Vineyard, the popular island retreat where it is held. In addition, the Club has announced that the event will lead with two days of ‘Round-the-Sound (‘RTS) Races on Thursday and Friday before culminating with the marquee ‘Round-the-Island (‘RTI) Race on Saturday.

The 56-nautical-mile ‘RTI Race, configured to start and finish off Edgartown, has been an annual tradition on Martha’s Vineyard for 84 years, making it one of America’s oldest distance races. Last year, 78 boats took part in the race, and it is expected that many of those competing in the ‘RTI this year will use the ‘RTS as a warm-up. The ‘RTS Races will be between 20 and 25 nautical miles, around government marks on Vineyard Sound and Nantucket Sound (one race per day) and will be scored separately from the ‘RTI with separate prizes given.

Classes include ORC, PHRF-NE (including Spinnaker, Non-Spinnaker, and Doublehanded Divisions), and Multi-Hulls. Participating vessels must meet the Safety & Equipment Requirements outlined on the regatta website.

Current sponsors of Edgartown Race Weekend are Mount Gay Rum, North Sails, Regatta Craft Mixers, Hinckley Yachts, Storm Trysail Club, and Team One Newport.

Nicolas Abiven: "We hope to see the first sailing ships sailing in 2025"
This Autumn of 2021 the Aeoldrive / SolidSail project reached a new milestone with the start of building of the second part of the balestron rig (Aeoldrive) and the sails which are composite panels (SolidSail) of the demonstrator model which is in Saint-Nazaire. Multiplast is effectively doubly involved as they are manufacturing the sails as well as part of the mast tube. He is a an update with Nicolas Abiven who is the engineer in charge of the project for Chantiers de l'Atlantique.

Can you remind us just how this Aeoldrive / SolidSail project started out?
The desire of Chantiers de l'Atlantique to build ships that use wind for propulsion to reduce diesel consumption dates back a little over ten years. At first there was a considerable period of research and development and studies quickly showed that traditional flexible sails were not suitable for big surface areas both actually operating them and in terms of durability. The engineers then considered sails made of panels which were independent of each other, connected by hinges. This principle was validated in the summer of 2016, Chantiers then called me to take care of the actual implementation of the idea. We started in September of that year with a very small sail on a J/80, then the following year on a 130 m2 sail aboard Jean Le Cam's Imoca. These tests were conclusive, so that we mounted it on the Le Ponant cruise ship for a whole season, until October 2019. At the same time, we manufactured a prototype SolidSail of 50 m2 with a balestron rig which was installed in the port of Pornichet. We have been testing it for two years and we are very happy with it.

Where did the decision to go up to full scale come from?
At the end of 2019, we launched the construction of the first part of the balestron rigging and sails intended for use on the first cruise ships. These were all installed last summer on the Chantiers de l'Atlantique site, in Saint Nazaire. Now we are in the process of manufacturing the additional mast and sails: 1,500 m2 in all, 1,100 for the mainsail, 400 for the jib. So that we will have the first complete 70m high rig erected on the port of Saint-Nazaire in September 2022. At the same time, we are discussing the marketing sailing ships (called Silenseas) with owners. We hope that the first orders will be signed in the first quarter of 2022 and that they will be sailing from the summer of 2025.

The YYachts success story began with the Y8. After "Cool Breeze", the first YYacht ever, and further individual Y8 follow-up orders, YYachts now developed a modified 80 feet platform for a Swiss customer. For the new Y8, the YYachts design and development team based in Palma de Mallorca cooperated with Surge Projects. The Mallorcan design studio around Javier Jaudenes has a "knack" for a timelessly elegant design, but also has great experience in designing fast yachts. Surge designs have won many trophies, and the studio has developed such interesting yachts as "Win Win" or the Café Racer. YYachts CEO Dirk Zademack says: "Javier Jaudenes is an excellent fit for YYachts with his previous projects; he is a great addition to Bill Tripp. We build fast boats that are both safe and easy to handle. That they also display outstanding design is a given."

Y8

In contrast to the previous Y8, the new model has a wider stern, so in combination with the mast set further back, Javier Jaudenes predicts high speed potential for his design: "The Jib will provide a lot of speed. A lot of R&D results from previous projects have gone into the Y8. It is an essence of our experience and will be fast, but at the same time very safe under any conditions. The fact that YYachts builds from carbon naturally suits our philosophy." Jaudenes: "The new Y8 is a lot of fun. I would describe her as a good-mood yacht."

The first three units of the new Y8 have already been sold.

The RS Aero Class has an accolade of being a corinthian class with inclusivity at the core of its values. The RS Aero 6 rig has been developed to bolster this value further. Specifically designed for small adults, the RS Aero 6 rig will remove barriers for women and smaller men who have previously found themselves between rig sizes.

RS Aero Class Manager Peter Barton commented, “After a long period of consideration, trialling, testing and consulting it is really exciting for the RS Aero Class to be adopting the new RS Aero 6 rig. The time is now right within the Class' evolvement and international support for the proposal. The RS Aero 6 size fits a highly populated space between the RS Aero 5 & 7 rig sizes with a large number of current and future RS Aero owners eager to have one. The new option will provide a sweet spot for many sailors, notably smaller adults, and particularly females, keen to grow the new RS Aero 6 fleet and with it grow the RS Aero Class as a whole."

The new rig system includes a 6.3m² mainsail, which is manufactured by North Sails. The radial cut sail is in line with the existing characteristics of the RS Aero 7 mainsail but with a slightly flatter head.
