The Departure Of Use It Again! From Lorient
Romain Pilliard and Alex Pella set off on Tuesday January 4, 2022 on the Round the World Record Upside Down. The trimara. Use It Again !. the former Ellen MacArthur boat, crossed the starting line at 17 hours 36 minutes and 04 seconds between the Pen Men lighthouse on the Isle of Groix and the Kerroc'h lighthouse in Lorient. This Round the World Tour against the prevailing winds and currents has never been successful in a multihull, a real sporting challenge for Romain Pilliard and Alex Pella.

In a north-north-west flow of around twenty knots, at sunset, the bows of the trimara. Use It Again. crossed the starting line at 17 hours 36 minutes 04 seconds between the Pen Men lighthouse on the Ile de Groix and the Kerroc'h lighthouse in the east of Lorient where the whole tea. Use It Again. surrounded Claude Breton, the official timekeeper of the WSSRC and Christian Dumard, router, meteorologist and third man of the team.

In front of Romain Pilliard and Alex Pella, a 21,600-mile round-the-world tour in direct route but nearly 30,000 miles in reality. During more than a hundred days of racing, the Franco-Spanish duo are determined to show concretely that it is possible to think about performance and to live exceptional adventures while minimizing its impact on the planet.

* Eighteen hours after the start, the Trimaran Use It Again! is progressing at 12 knots in the Bay of Biscay at the latitude of Bordeaux. As expected, Romain and Alex had to deal with a weaker southerly wind during the night but should touch up a stronger northwesterly flow during the day to get around the Spanish tip.

"It shakes this morning, the sea is rough. We reduced the sails to preserve the boat. "explained Alex Pella this morning.

"They had a rough night with a few grains and fired as expected in soft around 7:30 this morning. Everything is fine on board, for the time being they are faster than the initial routing". said Christian Dumard, shore-based router.

Dee Caffari and Shirley Robertson go Double Handed for the 2022 Offshore Season

Dee Caffari and Shirley Robertson Two of Britain's most decorated female sailors will be teaming up for the upcoming 2022 Double Handed Offshore Season. Dee Caffari and Shirley Robertson will be sailing together throughout 2022 in the UK Double Handed Offshore Series, racing a new Jeanneau Sun Fast 3300 supplied by SeaVentures UK. The pair will be racing in seven offshore races throughout 2022 culminating in the gruelling 1,805nm Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race.

One of the sport's most accomplished offshore sailors, Dee Caffari boasts a remarkable career that includes six laps of the planet, three of them solo. A maiden solo circumnavigation against the winds and tides, a sixth place finish in the legendary Vendee Globe, and a double handed circumnavigation in the Barcelona World Race have gone to make Dee the only woman ever to have sailed non-stop around the planet three times. Caffari has also twice completed the Volvo Ocean Race, in 2014/15 onboard 'Team SCA' and then in 2017/18 as skipper onboard 'Turn the Tide on Plastic'.

Joining Caffari is one of the sport's most successful Olympic female sailors of all time, Double Olympic Gold medallist Shirley Robertson. With gold medal wins in Sydney and Athens, Robertson was the first woman to helm a multi hull on the groundbreaking Extreme Sailing Series, the forerunner to today's big stadium racing circuits, and is a regular on the super yacht racing circuit. In parallel to her sailing feats, Robertson has also forged a successful media career, presenting CNN's flagship monthly documentary series "CNN Mainsail" for over a decade. She is the face of Olympic sailing coverage for the BBC and played a key presenting role in coverage of the 36th America's Cup from Auckland, New Zealand. She also now hosts the most listened to podcast in the sport of sailing.

Robertson and Caffari will be sailing in a newly delivered Sun Fast 3300, the boat both sailors raced throughout last season's offshore series. The 3300 is one of the go to race yachts of the growing double handed scene, and will be provided by Nigel De Q Colley's Sea Ventures UK.

Further information about Dee can be found at www.deecaffari.co.uk, while more information about Shirley can be found at www.shirleyrobertson.com - alternatively, Dee Caffari recently appeared on Shirley Robertson's Sailing Podcast, which is available on all good podcast platforms or via a homepage here. Jules Hall and Jan Scolten, The True Heroes Of The Sydney Hobart
Never heard of them? Well, the organization has contributed to it, not recognizing the importance of their sportive achievement. They said about them:

"At 03:01:42am this morning, the two Sydney sailors crossed the finish line in Hobart, the second two-hander to do so, behind Rob Gough and John Saul's Sidewinder.....Both looked happy with their lot in life. As well they might, as Disko Trooper_Contender Sailcloth is primed to win the race's first ever two-handed trophy, awarded to the winner on IRC. They have also won ORCi overall, ... will also win PHS overall. NOT BAD FOR TWO LASER SAILORS...., although Scholten is well-respected in yachting circles, both offshore and inshore."

As we can understand by the movie below, Jules Hall was the boat navigator and we all know that it is impossible to sail the little J99 at that pace, for several days, in rough conditions without two top sailors. Besides, the duo had recently won two majo. 2 handed races of the Australian calendar, finishing one of them not only ahead in IRC, but also in elapsed time (Line Honors).

Calling the Breeze: RORC Transatlantic Race
The record RORC fleet is in Puerto Calero and Marina Lanzarote and crews are making final preparations for the 3,000-mile race. Race navigators are studying the latest weather models and the data is predicting a fast, potentially record-breaking race to Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina in Grenada.

Organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club, in association with the International Maxi Association (IMA) and the Yacht Club de France. The eighth edition of the RORC Transatlantic Race will start from Lanzarote on Saturday 8th of January 2022.

The favourite for the IMA Trophy is the 100ft Maxi Comanche, skippered by Mitch Booth. Comanche is very capable of breaking the Monohull Race Record, set by Pier Luigi Loro Piana's Supermaxi My Song in 2018 of 10 days 05 hrs 47 mins 11 secs. Comanche's Australian navigator Will Oxley has racked up 300,000 ocean miles, including three editions of The Ocean Race.

The longest race in the RORC Season's Points Championship has attracted a record 30-boat entry in the epic 3,000nm race across the Atlantic Ocean and battles are predicted throughout the fleet. Starting from Lanzarote, the teams will be based at two Calero Marinas - Puerto Calero and Marina Lanzarote, and are racing to Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina in Grenada.

Seven multihulls are entered, with a scintillating four-way battle for Multihull Line Honours expected. Jason Carroll's Argo (USA), Giovanni Soldini's Maserati (ITA), Peter Cunningham's PowerPlay (CAY) and Antoine Rabaste's Ultim'Emotion 2 (FRA) are all favourites to be the first to finish the race. The RORC Transatlantic Race Multihull Record is 5 days 22 hrs 46 mins 03 secs (2015 - Lloyd Thornburg's Phaedo 3, skippered by Brian Thompson).

The firm favourite for 2022 Monohull line honours and the IMA Trophy is the 100ft Maxi Comanche, skippered by Mitch Booth.

The 2022 RORC Transatlantic Race will start on Saturday 8 January 2022

Cowes Classics Week
The Royal London Yacht Club, organiser of Cowes Classics Week, has announced that Peter Taylor MBE will take over as Chair of the regatta for 2022. Peter brings a wealth of talent to the role; he is an International and Olympic Race Officer and has successfully chaired Cowes Week for the last five years.

With record entries of over 200 in 2021, Cowes Classics Week is the largest classic yacht regatta of its type, yet it retains the character of a club-based event with lively social events centred on the RLYC and other yacht clubs in Cowes. High quality Corinthian racing is organised on five separate race courses from Monday 27th June to Friday 1st July. Cowes Classics Day, a new feature of Cowes Classics Week launched in 2021 and featuring many classic cars, yachts and motor boats on display, will be held on Sunday 26th June, the day after the world-renowned Round the Island Race.

Peter, who has been involved with the regatta since its start, said "I'm very excited to have the opportunity to lead Cowes Classics Week as we enter our 14th year. We have already had a wash up meeting with competitors at the 2021 event and are taking their feedback into account and with the uncertainties of last year behind us, we're going all out for a bumper year in 2022".

Entries will open by 1st March 2022 and more information can be found at www.cowesclassicsweek.org

Ultim: The 2022-2023 Calendar Is In Place
At the Paris Boat Show, the Nautic, OC Sport Pen Duick confirmed that Brest will host the start and finish of the Single-handed Ultim Round the World Race in 2023. It is a race which a lot more details will become known over the coming months, as also will the program for the seasons 2022 and 2023 the full details of which are not fully formalized.

It comes as not too much of a surprise that in 2023 and 2024 Brest that will host the start and finish of the Single-handed Ultim Round the World, the generic name for an event that was previously called Brest Oceans and which should really have been organized by Brest Ultim Sailing, created to organise the race. Finally taking on the management of the race since last July, OC Sport Pen Duick formalized this information on Tuesday as part of the Paris Nautic.

The first objective is to find a title partner at, according to Herve Favre for around "3 million euros" of a total budget estimated at "6-7 million (ex VAT)", to which Brest will put in 1.2 million. As for the teams, according to the agreement between the Ultim 32/23 class and the organizer foresees a minimum of four at the start. Five have already committed last summer by paying half of the registration fees which will amount to 200,000 euros: Banque Populaire, Sodebo, Actual, Gitana Team and Brest Ultim Sailing, the company of Emmanuel Bachellerie (former general delegate of the class), who are looking for partners to back the old Actual.

In 2023 an early race is planned ahead of the single-handed Ultim Round the World Race, namely the Lorient-Bermuda-Lorient which will return to the calendar after its postponement in 2019 (linked to the damage occurring on the Route du Rhum 2018). "I proposed to Lorient Agglo a four-year program, of which Lorient-Les Bermudes is part in 2023, they have agreed on the program and the budgets, now everything has to be signed", confirms Jean-Philippe Cau, the president of Lorient Grand Large. We would welcome the Ultims and perhaps other large trimarans, like Spindrift (now named Sails of Change) and the former MOD70s , as Maserati."

James Wharram, Catamaran Guru, Gone at 93
James Wharram There was only one James Wharram and now, as of December 14, the visionary designer of Polynesian style catamarans, is no more.

Wharram always sailed to the beat of a different drum and sought always to offer boat builders and cruising sailors an alternative to the cookie cutter sloops that were the mainstream. In the 1950s he began experimenting with twin canoe catamarans based on traditional voyaging vessels that carried Polynesians all over the South and North Pacific Oceans.

The early designs were simple, low-tech and easy for a home builder to construct. To prove that his designs were ocean-worthy, he and his two partners, Ruth and Jutta, sailed a 23-foot Wharram double-canoe cat across the Atlantic from England to the Caribbean. There, they built a 40-foot cat and then sailed it to New York and then back across the North Atlantic. The adventure became famous with the publication of the book Two Girls, Two Catamarans.

Many sailors consider Wharram the father of modern catamarans. Never conventional, Wharram always had multiple female partners, occasionally as many as five at the same time, but his life-long soul mates were Ruth, Jutta, who sadly died young, and Hanneke Boone, who survives James and still runs the design business.

Devotees of double-canoe cats are a unique breed of self-sufficient traditionalists who do in fact build their own boats and do sail them all over the world. Wharram's legacy lies in both his embrace of alternative lifestyles and his love of boat designs based on thousands of years of Pacific voyaging, both of which have inspired thousands of like-minded souls. You can check out his designs and learn more about his life at www.wharram.com
