Ichi Ban lifts Tattersall Cup for record-equalling third time
Matt Allen's Ichi Ban joins Freya and Love & War as the only boats to win the Tattersall Cup three times.

This is a third overall win in four Rolex Sydney Hobarts for Allen and his Botin 52.

Allen has won four Tattersall Cups, his first on Lou Abrahams' Challenge in 1983.

* Ichi Ban has become the first yacht to win back-to-back Sydney to Hobart handicap honours in more than 50 years after rival Celestial copped a "devastating" time penalty.

Celestial was penalised 40 minutes for breaching race rules after protests lodged by Ichi Ban and the race committee were upheld in the early hours of Friday.

Celestial, which was ahead of Ichi Ban in overall standings after the pair arrived in Hobart mere minutes apart, has been relegated to second.

Celestial skipper and owner Sam Haynes said while he respected the international jury's decision it was a "very, very difficult penalty to swallow".

"As far as I'm concerned, the decision stands. There's nothing I can do about that," he told reporters.

"It's a devastating moment. I've been trying to win this race for 10 years."

Sidewinder wins first two-handed line honours in Rolex Sydney Hobart
Tasmanians John Saul and Rob Gough etched their place in Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race history this evening by winning line honours in the inaugural Two-Handed division.

The pair, sailing their Akilaria RC2 designed by Frenchman, Marc Lombard, finished the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia's 628 nautical mile race in 4 days 7 hours 12 minutes.

Saul and Gough were thrilled about their win and its historic significance for Australian sailing.

"For the CYCA and the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania to absorb two-handed racing is fantastic," Saul said after mooring in Hobart this evening.

"You see so much of it over in Europe, but to see it catch on in Australia is great."

The two also embraced the challenge from a physical and tactical perspective.

"It was a heap of fun, a great race," Saul said. "There was so much variety of racing, a really tough first day and a half and then so quiet it was tough in other ways.

"There were plenty of sail changes, plenty of activity. Plenty of water across the deck."

Wight Vodka Best Sailor's Bar
Wight Vodka Tonight a mention of our first Bahamas entry... the Green Parrot in Nassau. Recommended by a few Star sailors of note, who mention the fantastic views of the harbor, the food (a LOT of ways to eat Lobster if that's your shellfish of choice) and some very large drinks served in "Yard Cups". Those are plastic cups about 24 oz and in colors not found in nature. As in vertigo-inducing green, yellow, orange.

One of the favorites recipes, and as popular a drink in the Bahamas as is its namesake:

Sex on the Beach
Ingredients:
Ice
2 oz Wight Vodka
1 oz peach schnapps
2 oranges, juiced, plus 2 slices to garnish
2 oz cranberry juice
Glace cherries, to garnish (optional)

Fill two tall glasses with ice cubes. Pour the vodka, peach schnapps and fruit juices into a large jug and stir.

Divide the mixture between the two glasses and stir gently to combine. Garnish with the cocktail cherries and orange slices.

Class 30 One Design: Reservations are open
With the preliminary design study phase drawing to a close, the ground is now being prepared for the construction of the first Class 30, with the next phase of the project underway, which is the development of the detailed construction plans. These will be completed by the end of March 2022.

The new Class 30 design will offer two different specifications; a Club and One Design version, with the Club offering being seen as a tool for training, learning about and competing on the offshore racing circuit. This new boat is the fruits of an international architecture competition organised by France's National Offshore Racing Union (UNCL) in partnership with the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC), in the UK and the Storm Trysail Club in America. With the constant involvement of the competition winners, the VPLP naval architecture firm and the Multiplast yard.

One of the objectives of the project is for the Class 30 Club boat, to have a competitive ready to sail price tag of under 100,000 EUR.

The registration protocol is both simple and safe. You need to send an email to where all requests are received; in return a booking contract will be sent along with a short presentation on the boat. To secure the reservation a 2,500 EUR deposit needs to be paid to a locked escrow account (all details in the information you receive), managed by a sworn lawyer. Once funds are received, the lawyer sends a booking number in chronological order to applicants. This booking number is non-transferable and you can cancel your reservation at any time and receive a full refund.

Production set to commence from January 2023
With regards to the build schedule, the study phase has been extended to finalise the tooling and moulds so that construction of the production boats can commence at the beginning of 2023, with the aim of having a few of the boats competing that Easter, either at the Spi Ouest France or the SNIM, or at RORC races in UK.

Depending how the order book evolves, promoters of the production boat will consider in due course whether or not to put in place an additional mould to increase production capacity in France, whilst evaluating the development of a licence programme overseas. -- Trish Jenkins

Birds Swoop To Victory At Burghfield Breezer
Event #3 of the Selden SailJuice Winter Series was a brand new event, the Burghfield Breezer, the first edition of which has been won by an Enterprise sailed by husband and wife team, Nigel and Andy Bird...

Keen for the event to go ahead, the staff and volunteers at Burghfield Sailing Club near Reading were watching the news from Boris Johnson to see if restrictions would prevent the event from going ahead. With the British government imposing no further restrictions and everyone at the club remaining Covid-free, the Burghfield Breezer was able to go ahead.

It was also unseasonably temperate for the time of year, the mild conditions providing a warm welcome for the 66 boats entered for the one-day competition. The south-easterly breeze was pulsing between 7 and 14 knots, ready to offer a challenging but very sailable day.

As sailors arrived at the club, the drizzle had set in, but as race time approached, conditions improved. The fleet was split into three for the morning handicap race.

Conditions were a little tricky, with some big shifts and the odd gust coming down the lake.

The SailRacer GPS trackers clocked the fastest sustained speed of 6.5 knots from Mike Lyons' Blaze, while Ellie Craig's RS Aero 7 notched the fastest speed when adjusted to handicap, with an adjusted speed of 6.03 knots.

With concerns about Covid causing the postponement of the Yorkshire Dales Brass Monkey and Grafham Grand Prix, the next event on the schedule is the GJW Direct Bloody Mary on 8 January 2022.

Malcolm David
Malcolm David It is with great sadness that I write to inform you of the death of a long-time member and supporter of HRSC, Malcolm Donald. He was Sailing Secretary from the mid-eighties until 1996, running Wednesday evening racing often single-handedly from the club boat Retriever. He also played a key role in other major club events such as the Warming Pan and the Hamble Winter Series.

Jonty Sherwill said "He brought a huge amount of sailing knowledge to the Club, which he freely passed on to the members".

Malcolm raced His Folkboat Celia Mary very successfully, particularly enjoying the Round the Island Race. Jamie Wilkinson said "I remember that one RTIR, he went into the trap at Ryde Sands, got out and pulled the boat over on its side, walked the boat out of the trap into deeper water, climbed back on board and went on to win the race" (The Gold Roman Bowl, 1994).

In later years he raced model boats at the Gosport Model Boat and Yacht Club, often testing them in the river by the HRSC Club House. His videos can be watched on Malcolm's YouTube channel. Club Manager, Gemma Payne remembers his interest in Russian politics. He used to tell her stories about the antics of Vladimir Putin. Malcolm was also a big "Saints" supporter.

Some of the older members will remember the "cardboard bomb" affair, when Malcolm, concerned about lack of security at BP in Hamble, walked unobstructed onto the BP site wearing a sign saying "Bomb" on his back. He had clearly made a valid point!

Malcolm was a gifted photographer, shooting on a medium format, twin lens Rolleiflex. You may be interested to see his stunning collection.

As many of you may know, Malcolm found recent years incredibly difficult, spending five years in a care home after a stroke, followed recently by another. At his own request, his body will be cremated without ceremony or mourners. If you wish to pay your respects to Malcolm, let us raise a glass to him on New Year's Eve; in Past Commodore Ross Elliston's words "He's gone on a voyage of adventure, we will all meet up one day".

Rest in peace, at last, Malcolm. -- Steph Merry, Commodore, Hamble River Sailing Club
