Wight Vodka Best Sailors Bar
Wight Vodka Best Sailors Bar Tonight we honor a frequently mentioned establishment, one known to anyone who's visited the British Virgin Islands (or sailed over from St. John as did your humble narrator, on a Mistral Superlight sailboard back around 1982).

Foxy's Tamarind Bar on Jost Van Dyke was founded in 1968.

In 1968, a young Philicianno "Foxy" Callwood saw the future on sailing yachts that came to call on the idyllic 4 square mile of Jost Van Dyke. In the shade of a Tamarind Tree, Foxy set up a bar for the specific purpose of welcoming sailors to his island home. Foxy's Tamarind Bar is often recognised as the birthplace of the BVI's Yachting tourism industry. Quick with a song, joke or story, Foxy has been welcoming visitors to 'his island' for 5 decades. He has received numerous awards for his contributions to heritage and tourism in the British Virgin Islands, including a MBE (Member of the British Empire) from H.M. The Queen of England, Elizabeth II.

Foxy's is (as far as we know) the only beach bar with its own burgee.

Famous for their Painkiller, there's also a drink that Foxy's is well known for... the exact recipe's a state secret but this one is a very close approximation:

Dread Fox
1.5oz. Foxy's Fire Water Rum
4oz. Margarita Mix
1oz. Cranberry Juice

Mixing Instructions: Add all ingredients into mixing glass with ice. Shake well. Pour into glass with ice. Look out over Great Harbour. Raise glass and toast.

Arnaud Psarofaghis: "The Objective Is To Win The 37th Cup"
On Tuesday at the Societe nautique de Geneve Alinghi - represented by Ernesto Bertarelli, and Red Bull Racing, with Hans-Peter Steinacher - confirmed that together they will jointly launch a challenge for the 37th America's Cup. The challenge will be made up of mainly Swiss sailors, including Arnaud Psarofaghis, 33, who has been a key member of the Alinghi team for six years, notably steering the Swiss GC32 on the GC32 Racing Tour. Tip & Shaft caught up with him this week.

In terms of fast boats now you are one of the most renowned Swiss sailors, can you tell us about the journey that has taken you to Alinghi?

I was born on the shores of Lake Geneva and so I was taken on a boat very early on, since my uncle and my father set up a boatyard at the end of the 1970s [the Psaros shipyard, editor's note]. My father then turned to cars, my uncle still has the business. And so I had the chance to sail all different types of monohulls from a young age, that's how I caught the sailing bug. I started to do double-handed dinghies, before getting into multihulls in 2006, first in the D35, but what really changed my course is when I was contacted in 2011 by Alain Gautier to participate in the AC45 World Series with the Aleph team. That’s where I really started to sail internationally in a multihull. Then I continued in the AC45 with Loick Peyron's Energy Team, I coached the Swiss Youth America's Cup team in 2013, I did Extreme 40 with Gitana then with Realstone, and a one-year spell with Groupama in preparation for the America's Cup 2017. And in 2015, I had the opportunity to substitute in at Alinghi, I joined the team at 100 % the next year.

Given your background was it always your dream to join Alinghi?

I was 14 when they won the first America's Cup in 2003. Before that, the Cup seemed a distant event, very far away, when looked at from Switzerland. And so that victory opened up the field of possibilities for Swiss sailors. We have shown that 'a small country that has no sea’ was able to do great things. So yes, at that point, for me it became a goal and a dream to join Alinghi which is really my core team. And at the back of my mind, there was always this idea of racing in the America's Cup. Today these two goals have now come together, the dream is coming true.

Why is Alinghi coming back to this 37th edition now and not before?

Alinghi didn’t come back earlier because the planets weren't yet aligned. We had to wait for the right time. That came after the last Cup and the publication of the protocol in mid-November confirmed it. All the lights have gone green and Mr. Bertarelli has decided to embark on this great adventure.

Jade's Journey Week One
WHAT Father and daughter duo is somewhere in the middle of the Indian Ocean 23.55S/89.36E

Since leaving Fremantle on Monday 13 december, Merci has been zig zagging West in very light and fluky conditions. For the Destremau father and daughter duo, it has been a week of settling into their new life at sea. They are getting used to freeze dried food, no facilities or comforts, and for Jade, overcoming seasickness.

"It's been a steep learning curve but an eye opening week. I am excited for the future of this trip. At times I felt lonely and homesick and especially missed my twin brother" said Jade.

According to the weather forecast, it should take Merci another two weeks to reach Cape of Good Hope. "The weather pattern is very awkward with the wind changing several times a day. We re taking this light weather opportunity to carry out some maintenance onboard. Jade has been learning heaps and it is such a joy to have her onboard Merci" concluded her father Sebastien Destremau.

This flying electric boat can save Venice from sinking
Flying Boat Venice is slowly sinking.

Massive waves from the city’s speedboats are causing irreparable damage to the iconic buildings. But what if all the taxis, ambulances and commuter ferries that serve as the city's main form of transportation could fly above the water, without making wakes - and be electric? On Monday, the revolutionary Candela C-7 electric hydrofoil boat will be back in town for a public demonstration of its unique capabilities.

In the 1950’s gas powered motor boats came to Venice, increasing the speed and efficiency of water transportation. But they also created the problem known to Venetians as Moto Ondoso - wake induced damage - that threatens to erode the foundations of Venice. The 800-year old buildings are built on wooden pillars not designed to withstand the high-energy impact from the swells created by the city’s fleet of diesel-burning speedboats.

The wakes are seen as such a problem, that Gondoliers and activists repeatedly have demonstrated against speedboats by blocking the city’s waterways.

Hailed by the media as the “savior of Venice”, the Swedish-made Candela is an entirely new kind of craft that brings hope of saving the city’s unique cultural heritage from destruction - and make transports even better and faster than today.
