Day 2 of 2021 Youth Sailing World Championships
Patterns are starting to emerge in the results after another big day on the water at the 2021 Youth Sailing World Championships presented by Hempel.

With 11 events due to be decided by the end of this Friday, 17 December, the 433 sailors from 59 nations already find themselves close to the halfway stage of the competition.

Female Skiff 29er

Emily Mueller (GBR) was having that very conversation with her 29er crew Florence Brellisford. "By the time we're dropping the kite at the leeward gate in our next race, we'll be half way through our regatta," said Mueller. "It feels like we've only just started!" It was a very good day for the British 29er team, scoring 1,3,1 in 6 to 10 knot conditions that Mueller described as 'snakes and ladders'. "We finally learned how to start," smiled Brellisford, trying to pinpoint what made the difference on day two. "A good start makes life a lot easier, rather than having to fight your way through from the back. But it never felt easy. It was super shifty out there, really hard to read the wind."

The British girls are enjoying the competition and using one of the many supplied equipment boats that they didn't have to bring themselves. "The boats are really good," said Mueller. "They feel fast, everything is new. But you're not allowed to change anything, all the rope and control lengths are set, you can only add bungee. It's the same for everybody so it's very fair racing."

Seahorse Sailor Of The Month
This month's nominees:

Day 2 of 2021 Youth Sailing World Championships Tom Kneen (GBR)
Well, that wasn't very funny... Tom Kneen and his Plymouth team on their JPK 1180 Sunrise did a terrific job winning the Fastnet this year, with the bonus of breaking away from the fleet in light air on the way to Cherbourg and finishing 10 hours ahead of their nearest class rival, joy of joys. They did a nice job winning the Middle Sea Race too, or they thought they had. After that, well, a bunch of novice boys scouts would have made a better fist of sorting out the results

Day 2 of 2021 Youth Sailing World Championships Don Macintyre (AUS)
Veteran singlehanded round the world racer, professional adventurer, with a fondness for the coldest places on earth and passionate about breaking down the elite image of ocean racing for those who'd never considered it. No records were broken but his Golden Globe round the world race made a lot of people happy and got a lot of column inches; the next is well on track. Now for the ultimate home-builders' extravaganza... And as we write Don's out there proving it

Day 2 of 2021 Youth Sailing World Championships Last Month's winner:
Melwin Fink (GER)
'Cool sailor! Does his own thing instead of following the herd' - Rainer Buge; 'Melwin was the youngest, fastest and the most fearless sailor in the Mini Transat, at the same time very modest and careful with his equipment' - Wilko Meinhold; 'A great young offshore sailor' - Thomas Jungblut; 'I'm sorry but the choice is too hard; they both deserve it!' - Udo Heuser; 'A courageous and reflective young man who deserves support' - Gabriele Ritter.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing launches bid for 37th America's Cup
A new team will be challenging for the next America's Cup, as Red Bull joins forces with double America's Cup–winning syndicate Alinghi in a campaign for the oldest trophy in international sport. Alinghi founder Ernesto Bertarelli and two-time Olympic champion Hans Peter Steinacher announced the launch of the new Alinghi Red Bull Racing and presented its logo at the Société Nautique de Genève, the yacht club the team will represent. Red Bull Racing principal Christian Horner also participated live via satellite.

After an absence of over a decade, one of the most dynamic names in the history of the America's Cup, Alinghi, is returning to battle for sailing's pinnacle honour, and this time the twice consecutive–winning syndicate is partnered by a driving force in global sport, Red Bull. Sailing under the flag of the Société Nautique de Genève, Alinghi Red Bull Racing begins preparations immediately to race as an official challenger when the Selection Series for the 37th America's Cup begins in 2024.

The word according to Cowie - 52 Super Series
52 Super SeriesAfter the tightest of finishes to what has surely been the closest-fought season ever, Takashi Okura's Sled crew won the 2021 52 Super Series title and the Rolex TP52 World Championships. Theirs is a popular victory for a hard-working, super-experienced team who take their sport seriously and are meticulous in their preparation and execution but, win or lose, they are usually smiling and are kings of the dockside banter.

Sailing under a USA sail number and flying the burgee of the New York Yacht Club, the crew are a truly multicultural mix, proudly embracing the Japanese culture at the heart of the team owned and usually driven by the discreet Mr Takashi Okura, but the core are a potent mix of very experienced largely Kiwi America's Cup and ex-Olympians, alongside a tight group of Japanese sailors who have sailed with Mr Okura for many years. Italian Andrea Visintini is navigator. Aussie Adam Beashel is longtime strategist/tactician but travel for him was too difficult after the first regatta, Puerto Portals, so Francesco Bruni was quickly recruited. Another bump in the road was losing their Japanese sailors for the second regatta.

Swiss Roll
A grey morning on a misty Lake Geneva did little to dampen what was a stunning presentation of the new Alinghi Red Bull Racing Team who brought the Cup alive ushering in a whole new generation whilst keeping a strong link to an astronomically successful past. Make no mistake, having Ernesto Bertarelli back in the America's Cup, with mega F1 backing by the newly crowned World Champions, is the best news of 2021 and sets a course for AC37 that makes it unmissable, tantalising, exciting and full of intrigue.

Ernesto looked his usual youthful cool as he ushered in the new partnership with Red Bull, no surprise to any readers of this blog, but more importantly, the new generation of Swiss sailors, the flying generation, that have been quietly plying their trade on the European lakes coming through the foiling ranks. Ernesto is in no doubt that they are ready - time will tell on that front...

... in Brad Butterworth you can feel the old school charm and machiavellian politics already creeping in - it's great having him back. The inter-play between him and Ernesto was like two old mates in on the joke. Throw in the likes of Dalton, Ratcliffe, Patrizio Bertelli and Terry Hutchinson and it's going to be so much fun to watch the ultimate wind-up merchant on full transmit with the boss's backing. Welcome again Brad Butterworth to the big time. The Cup is so much more fun with you.

Gillard & Gray Rocket To Flyer Victory
Tom Gillard and Rachael Gray raced their Merlin Rocket to victory at the 99-strong Datchet Flyer, Event #2 of the Selden SailJuice Winter Series.

The Merlin narrowly beat Roger Gilbert and Ben McGrane in their 505 with Jack Hopkins' Laser (ILCA 7) edging out the GP14 of Nick Craig and Toby Lewis for third place. Olympic Champion Dylan Fletcher stepped into the back of a National 18 with Michael Wilson and Ben Batchelor to finish in fifth place.

It was a diverse entry of boats with 34 classes ranging from the Topper to the Formula 18 catamaran, along with Flying 15 keelboats and National 18s. There was a big 420 turnout, the class making this one of the go-to events for the winter season.

It was also diverse weather. Saturday suffered temperature and winds in single figures; Sunday soared with temperature and winds both in double figures, occasionally gusting 15 knots and even causing some capsizes.

The overall scores were very close, with the Merlin Rocket of Tom Gillard and Rachael Gray (9 pts), 505 of Roger Gilbert and Ben McGrane (12 pts), Jack Hopkins Laser (ILCA 7 - 12.5 pts) taking the top three.

SpeedSix challenge
Not surprisingly on Saturday, SailRacer GPS trackers struggled to record any sustained speeds over five knots. Sunday saw many boats posting speeds in double figures, the F18 of Sam van de Velde the fastest with 13.19 knots in Race 3, followed by Musto Skiff sailor Fred Cudmore at 11.19 knots.

Adjusted speeds
Freddie Sunderland in his Laser 4.7 (ILCA 4), was fastest on adjusted speed in the pursuit race, followed by Stuart Jones on his Contender.

Coming up at the end of this month are two events on the same day. Yorkshire Dales Brass Monkey in the north, and Burghfield Breezer in the south. To enter these and other events in the Series, go here:

Morton Weintraub
Morton Weintraub Morton Weintraub, 89, hailing from Larchmont, NY passed away peacefully on December 7, 2021.

Mort was winning races from the 210 Worlds to the IOD Worlds in the late 60s and early 70s. He has been a perennial race winner from Long Island Sound to Rhode Island and beyond including class and fleet winner at Block Island Race Week multiple times.

However, more important than winning was the comradery he fostered with his crew and competitors of which he cherished deep and long-lasting friendships. Mort was a true "connector" of people. If he thought you would benefit from meeting a particular person, he would do everything in his power to facilitate that connection.

Mort is survived by his wife Beatrice; children John Weintraub, Anne (Weintraub) Fass, and Ned Weintraub; grandchildren Sydney Fass, Jamie Fass, Michael Weintraub, Sophie Weintraub, and Kendal Fass; numerous nieces and nephews and dear friends.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family is asking that you contribute anything you can to the following charities:
- Sail to Prevail (Newport, RI): Providing programs encourage individuals with disabilities to be active participants in the sailing experience. https://sailtoprevail.org/support/

- Rocking the Boat (Bronx New York): Through boat building, sailing and swimming, Rocking the Boat empowers young people from the South Bronx to develop self-confidence, set ambitious goals, and gain the skills necessary to achieve them. https://rockingtheboat.org/support/
