Star Southern Hemisphere Championship
The Altolaguirre brothers, Leandro and Lucas are the 2021 Star Southern Hemisphere Champions! They earned their first Silver Star after an amazing scorecard of five bullets out of eight races and a huge 24-point margin over the second team, Diego Peisajovich with Javier Ciro, and 25 over the third, Fabian Mac Gowan with Nicolas Rosas.

The Championship, organized in Buenos Aires by Club Nautico Olivos and the ISCYRA, ended today with two more races, reaching the scheduled total of eight. The first race of the day was sailed with an offshore breeze of 12/15 knots at the start that increased up to 18/20 towards the end. There was a strong threat of 'Pampero' on the racecourse - a local wind that generally comes with a storm - but luckily it wasn't the case.

The successful week of sailing in Argentina ended with the traditional prizegiving. A Silver Star was awarded and the organizers of Club Nautico Olivos hope to see you all on the Rio de la Plata, the Silver River.

New Around Sint Maarten Record

New Around Sint Maarten Record This Sunday was the last race of the Caribbean foiling Championships edition 2021 with the famous around the island race. A precedent record was to beat for the kitefoil professional category, and it was the first time it was attempted in a wingfoil.

After two days racing in Orient Bay and around Tintamarre island, today was the final and long awaited race around the island of Sint Maarten/ Saint-Martin.

Under strong winds and possible showers weather forecast, Sacha Daunar, an experienced racing judge for the French sailing federation of Guadeloupe, says weather conditions are fine to compete and departure was set at 10 a.m. with wings leaving first, kitefoil leisure and windfoil second and kitefoil professional category last. Getting closer to Philipsburg, the kitefoils which go faster are ahead.

In the professional category, the race was intense and riders were close together, with four riders beating the precedent record of 1 hour and 29 minutes established three years ago. The winner, Julien Quentel, completed the lapse around the island in 1 hour and 12 minutes. Tiger Tyson, arrives second, 1 minute and 30 seconds later.

Big Winds and Big Results round out Sail Sydney
Sydney Harbour put on a show for the last day of Sail Sydney, with a gusty southerly providing perfect racing conditions for the 200-plus competitors.

The regatta has been the first opportunity for many athletes to test their skills against interstate competition in many months, and 29er class winners Daniel Links and Markus Sampson will be using it as a springboard to a big summer of competition.

Australia has a proud Olympic history in the 49er class, and with the Paris Olympics less than three years away first blood in the selection battle was drawn by Queensland's Tom Needham and Joel Turner. They won a tight regatta ahead of Jim Colley and Shaun Connor, with Tom Burton and Simon Hoffman in third.

2022 will be a big year for the team from the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron.

"We'll be heading down to Sail Melbourne in early January, and then overseas in March to start the European circuit. We'll actually have two trips to Europe, and then head to Canada for the World Championships later in the year."

Hunters Hill sailor Sylvie Stannage finished her regatta with three straight bullets to take home victory in the Laser Radial class.

In other classes, Laura Harding and Annie Wilmot were almost perfect in their domination of the 49erFX class whilst Grae Morris (iQFoil) and the team of Jake Liddell and Lucy Copeland (Nacra 17) left it to the last race to secure their regatta victories.

The next stop for many of the athletes will be Sail Melbourne, which will be hosted by the Royal Brighton Yacht Club and the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria from the 13th to 17th of January 2022.

5O5 Book Launch
The launch of the long-awaited 5O5 BOOK telling the story of the 5o5 and how it has come to dominate the performance dinghy scene will finally be launched at the World Championship in Cork.

2022 is already shaping up to be a great year for the 5o5 Class, for after being forced by Covid to cancel their last two World Championships, scheduled for Sweden and Bermuda, the good news is that this event will return to Cork, in Southern Ireland next August. This will be the third time that the Royal Cork Yacht Club will have hosted this prestigious event, with both the 1964 and the 1982 World Championships being regarded as classics, held across a wide range of conditions.

With the Royal Cork being acknowledged as the world's oldest yacht club, it is fitting that mid-championship next year that they will be hosting the launch of the long-awaited book telling the story of the 5o5, and how it has come to dominate the performance dinghy scene.

There is a very good saying that warns readers to 'not judge a book by its cover' but this is one occasion when the cover itself will have a big part to play, as it will lead the reader into the detailed narrative set out in the book. There are lots of fantastic pictures of FiveOs out there, as the boat has always been very photogenic, but for the book cover something special will be needed.

Luckily, Christophe Favreau, the famous international marine photographer has long enjoyed a close association with the 5o5 Class, and over the years has captured the best of the action at events around the world. Now, as the book moves towards being launched, Christophe has generously donated a selection of some of his iconic photos, one of which will be selected at the book cover.

The 12 cover shots to be posted starting December 25.

18ft Skiffs NSW Championship, Race 4

18ft Skiffs NSW Championship Sydney Harbour: The defending champion Tech2 team of Jack Macartney, Charlie Wyatt and Lewis Brake produced a brilliant finishing burst to grab a last-minute victory in Race 4 of the 2021-2022 NSW 18ft Skiff Championship on Sydney Harbour today.

Tech 2's team survived a capsize at the start, then hard to come from behind at the final rounding mark as the fleet headed for the finish line, before taking the lead for the only time during the race as it crossed the line a 1s winner.

Series leader Yandoo (John Winning, Mike Kennedy and Fang Warren) had led for most of the course in the more than 20-knot southerly wind and looked likely to hold on for her second win of the championship before Tech2 came in hard to grab victory right alongside the judge's boat at the short end of the finish line.

Andoo (James Dorron, Matt Stenta and Sam Newton) looked to be the major threat to Yandoo as the leaders approached the finish but had to settle for third place, a further 14s behind Yandoo.

It was a race which provided spectators with non-stop action, thrilling spinnaker runs down the harbour at top speed, spectacular capsizes and a magnificent finish.

At the half-way point of the eight-race championship, Yandoo still retains a narrow one point lead over today's winner, Tech2.

Yandoo has eight points, Tech2 nine points, Noakesailing (Sean Langman, Ed Powys and Josh Porebski) on 17, Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Steve Thomas) on 24, Burrawang-Young Henrys (Simon Nearn) on 32 and Fisher & Paykel (Jordan Girdis) on 35.

Race 5 of the NSW Championship will be conducted next Sunday -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Name and location of the bar Madiba Beach Cafe in Portsmouth, Dominica

An update on their Facebook page: Sailors can come in without quarantine if fully vaccinated from Monday December 13

Here's what makes it so great...
In July 2018, our crew sailed from Antigua to Martinique. The friendships are deep, dating back decades, but geography conspires to keep us in different continents. While our crew all hails from the US, we now find ourselves living in Nanjing, China, Montreal, Canada, Austin, Texas, Richmond, Va. and New York, NY. For us, the summer sailing trip is one part love of sailing, one part an excuse to get old friends together.

For this voyage, we had some that weren't able to start in Antigua and hence elected to meet us in Dominica. Having lived in the Caribbean previously, we knew we should be prepared to be flexible. We tried planning ahead of time, but Dominica offers significant challenges. First, there aren't many functional anchorages in Dominica. A volcanic island, the depth is significant all the way up till the shoreline. Additionally, there isn't an abundance of mooring balls on the island as there are in places like the BVIs, Grenada, St. Lucia, or Bequia. The geographical challenges were compounded by the infrastructure challenges following the 2017 hurricane season. We really wanted to visit Dominica because of its unique reputation for beauty but meeting would take some luck.

After making some calls and consulting some trusty websites, we determined that Portsmouth had good moorings and a bar, Madiba, with wifi. So our plan was to arrive on July 11, go to the bar and message our friends, who would be coming over on the ferry from Martinique to meet us. When we arrived at Madiba, we found many people huddled up, speaking different languages, looking different forms of ragged, but all fixated on the tv feed showing the England v. Croatia game for the world cup. When I asked the bar tender for the wifi password to log on she smiled "no wifi right now because the world cup is on. If people start accessing the wifi network, we won't be able to stream the match." It was the 3rd minute of the match.

We sat down, ordered some burgers and rum punches, with Carib as chasers, smiled and said "nothing can be done." During the second half we saw our friends arrive with their sail bags and warm smiles, all excited to find ourselves reunited in such a unique place. When goals were scored, people cheered and groaned. It was a fantastic venue for a memorable friends reunion that none of us recall with clarity.

Is there a special drink they make? Care to share the recipe with us?
Rum punch, of course.

John Clapham
John Clapham John Clapham, who has died at the age of 81 was a former Commodore of Royal Torbay Yacht Club (Devon, U.K.) and at the time of his death was still Vice Admiral of the club. John, affectionately known to his friends as "Clappers", was a competitive Dragon sailor in his younger years, mostly in Ireland where he lived and worked for a while.

During that time he was a member of the Royal St. George Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire and the Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club in Holywood, as well as being an active member of the Irish Cruising Club. While living in Ireland he worked for Guinness, his job being to ensure the local pubs cared for and served their product properly. He would go on to have a successful stockbroking career.

In Torquay he is probably best remembered for his time as organiser and principal race officer of the Yachting Monthly Triangle Race, a double handed jaunt from Torquay to Kinsale (Ireland), thence on the Treguier, Brittany, before returning to Torquay. On one occasion, when the cruise liner Queen Elizabeth II was anchored in Torbay, at the time of the race start he managed to commandeer it as the committee boat.

He believed it was the largest committee boat in sailing history, commenting "there was no danger of the committee boat end of the line being overcrowded, because of the wind shadow it cast". Mostly his own beloved Tresillian V, an aged but stately Oyster 39, was the committee boat both in Torquay and for the restart in Treguier.

Admiral of the Royal Torbay Yacht Club, Nigel Wollen, described John as, "incapable of making an enemy, a gentle man in the true sense of the word, warm and generous". His smile and humour will be greatly missed at the RTYC bar. -- John 'Robo' Roberson
