Star Southern Hemisphere Championship
A beautiful day in Buenos Aires welcomed the 25 teams gathered on Rio de la Plata from the main South American countries to attend the 2021 Star Southern Hemisphere Championship. The Silver Star event started today and will end on Sunday December 12th, organized by Club Nautico Olivos, Star District 18th and the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association.

Two races were sailed on Day One, with the classic local breeze blowing from South-East over Rio de la Plata. The wind stayed between 10/12 knots for the first race while it got up to 15 and more for the second wilder run.

The fight for the first bullet was mainly between Ricky Fabini / Fede Calegari (URU/ARG) and the Altolaguirre brothers, Leandro and Lucas (ARG). The Argentinians got the best and were followed by Fabini/Calegari and Juan Pablo Percossi with Felipe Caivano (ARG).

The Altolaguirre brothers won also the second windier race, followed by Alberto Zanetti with Gustavo Warburg (ARG), and Fabian Mac Gowan and Nicolas Rosas (ARG).

Leandro and Lucas are leading the provisional ranking at the end of Day One, with Percossi/Caivano second and Fabini/Calegari third. A similar forecast is expected for tomorrow and the rest of the week.

Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image Award

Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image Award Some of the world's greatest yacht racing photographers gathered in Paris this evening for the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image award prize giving. Among them, French photographer Loic Venance, winner of the main award thanks to his picture of french sailor Jeremie Beyou in the Vendee Globe, and Patrick Condy (UK), winner of the Public Award.

Born in Paris in 1975, Loic Venance studied photography at the Ecole de l'Image (Gobelins). He joined Agence France Presse (AFP) in 2001 and covered numerous subjects in France and abroad, including Lybia, Bolivia or Thailand. Venance started to work in sailing in 2016, covering offshore races such as the Vendee Globe, Route du Rhum or Transat Jacques Vabre.

The Public Award, based on the number of public votes cast on the internet, was won by Patrick Condy from the UK with an image of Alex Thomson's Hugo Boss rounding the Fastnet Rock. Condy leads two Hungarian photographers: Brigi Torok and Joka Gemesi.

First ORC Double Handed Championship in Stockholm in 2022
The Royal Swedish Yacht Club (KSSS) will host the first ever ORC Double Handed World Championship starting on 30 June 2022 with registration, preparations and inspections at the starting venue in the middle of Stockholm. Here the race will start with an intricate navigation race through the archipelago before reaching the open sea and a sail around the island of Gotland: this will be a true challenge for the competitors.

The championship is a part of the KSSS regatta Gotland Runt - the world´s largest annual offshore race which has been organized by the Royal Swedish Yacht Club since 1937 and is regarded as the season's highlight in offshore sailing in the Baltic.

The race itself starts on Sunday 3 July 2022 and we expect the world's best boats and crews to gather at the start in Stockholm. Being a part of Gotland Runt also means that all competitors will be a part of one of Stockholm's major summer events. As the boats start in the middle of the city, tens of thousands of spectators gather on the shores and in vessels all along the route through the archipelago.

Wight Vodka Best Sailors Bar Competition
Crab Shell Bar Tonight's recommended watering hole from Stamforc, CT, USA:

Crab Shell

Here's what makes it so great...
Customers

Is there a special drink they make? Care to share the recipe with us?
Wight Vodka ... soda ... cranberry ... lime

Otherwise knowns as the Cape Codder:

2 ounces Wight vodka
2 or 3 ounces cranberry juice cocktail
1/2 ounce lime juice
club soda
Collins glass

"Pour Wight vodka into a Collins glass, add cranberry juice cocktail, the juice of half a lime (some leave this out,) and a couple of ice cubes. Top off with club soda or seltzer (some leave this out, too, doubling the cranberry; we don't). Garnish, if you wish, with a slice of lime and/or a sprig of mint.

In the fullness of time, the preppy Cape Codder begat the even-preppier Madras (named, no doubt, after the favorite plaid of the Ivy League undergraduate, not the subcontinental city), which is prepared thusly: Mix 2 ounces vodka and 2 ounces OJ in a Collins glass, slip in a couple of ice cubes, and float 2 ounces of cranberry juice; serve with a stirrer and, if you wish, a wedge of lime (people like something to play with). In the fuller fullness of time, the Madras begat the Cosmopolitan" -- Esquire magazine

49er Short Track World Championship
The Short Track World Championship is an action-packed tournament format that showcases the best of sailing in a fan-friendly package. The world's best 49er and 49erFX sailors will race in the world's best amphitheater for sailing. The regatta will run from July 14-17, 2022 as part of a summer of sailing in Marstrand, Sweden. Host for the event will be GKSS, The Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club, with a long track record of hosting prestigious regattas as Volvo Ocean Race Stop Over, Americas Cup Act, Gold Dragon Cup, and numerous World Championships.

Short Track is the progression of the Theatre Style concept pioneered by the 49er class last decade. Each race is eight minutes long in a windward-leeward course, bounded on each side to keep the racing close and the fans closer.

Grant Dalton addresses New Zealand hosting bid
Emirates Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton has attempted to smooth the waters around the team's stance on hosting the next America's Cup in home waters, saying a bid to do so is about $50 million short of being a viable option.

Since the end of the 36th America's Cup in Auckland earlier this year, there has been speculation as to where the next edition would be held, with the belief that it would almost certainly be offshore.

While Ireland, Spain and Saudi Arabia have all been floated as possible venues, a bid launched by Kiwi rich lister Mark Dunphy to once again host the Cup in Auckland has drawn a lot of attention.

Addressing members of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron last night, Dalton explained to the club that while Dunphy believed his bid had the money needed, it was not a viable option for the team.

"Since March this year our numbers of an overall budget of $200m split between team ($120m) and event costs ($80m) have never changed," Dalton said.

"Of this total $200m budget, the consistent ask of potential venues has been essentially $120m with slight variations for relative overseas costs like accommodation. To be clear, categorically, it is not a process of 'selecting the highest bidder', as has also been mischievously circulated. -- Christopher Reive
