Baiona and Barcelona Bookend Historic 10th Year of the 52 Super Series in 2022
After a 2021 circuit limited to three events in three months the 2022 season is planned around a mix of new venues, solid, dependable favourites and a celebratory return to the Catalan capital where the season's title will be decided and a glittering end-of-season 10th Birthday Party is already being planned.

The wild and beautiful Galician coast off Baiona will raise the curtain on what promises to be a hotly contested 2022 season. The historic Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona will host the class for the first time and promise a very warm welcome. On the race course a good range of conditions are expected in May, the prevailing winds usually being NE'ly around 12-16knots, the race area located on the edge of the reliable Portuguese trade winds which blow down the Atlantic coast of the Iberian peninsula.

But the return to Barcelona is a move which has been widely applauded. Of course it is where the 52 SUPER SERIES began, rising from the ashes of the MedCup at the Trofeo Conde de Godo in May 2012. So there will be double cause for celebration - marking the longevity of the circuit and the gateway to the next 10 years, as well as celebrating the season's champions. Racing in late October ashore there is loads of activity in the vibrant city which remains popular year round with tourists.

Light winds for Star Winter Series #2
The Commodore's Cup, the second event in the 2021-22 Star Winter Series, attracted 18 teams on December 4-5 in Miami, FL. The Race Committee had their work cut out for them to get off four quality races in very light conditions, ranging from two to seven knots. Augie Diaz and Bruno Prada won the event with a score line of all top two finishes.

Conditions on the first day looked optimistic as teams warmed up happily hanging over the rail, but as racing got underway, the wind gradually decreased throughout the race. Pressure built again for race two, but remained light. Race three was the trickiest of the day. Cayard and Lawrence, managed to work their way up to fifth place by the second windward mark and went on to sail a masterful downwind, taking a more direct line to the finish. They passed three boats to finish second hot on the heels of Diaz and Prada who won the race. Collins and Harding finished third, a top Winter Series result for Collins.

On day two, Cayard and Lawrence won the race, but the major fight was between MacCausland and Szabo for third position. Szabo and Avellon won the battle, enough to give them third place for the event, as no more races were sailed due to lack of wind.

Eileen Ramsay - the Queen of Yachting Photography
Eileen Ramsay Eileen Ramsay was at the centre of a unique period in yachting history, and this wonderful book, featuring her classic photography, celebrates an extraordinary woman and her extraordinary subjects. Eileen's heyday was between 1950 and 1970 - a time when eccentrics ruled, records were there for the setting, and women weren't often to be found behind the lens. But Eileen established herself as one of the greatest yachting photographers of her time, taking famous portraits of sailing icons like Francis Chichester and Eric Tabarly, Olympians, including Rodney Pattisson and Keith Musto, and historic pictures from the first Observer Singlehanded Transatlantic (OSTAR) Races. She was the only photographer Chichester allowed on his Gipsy Moth yachts, and commissioned to photograph notorious charmers like Uffa Fox and Max Aitken, learned to stave off their amorous advances.

Eileen, now into her 90s can remember just about every photograph she has taken and relate an anecdote or story about each one. Many of these memories are also recorded in the book.

Eileen Ramsay - the Queen of Yachting Photography, is a spectacular celebration of a pioneering photographer and a fascinating time in yachting history.

Hamble Classics Regatta 2022 chooses dual club hosting
The 2022 Hamble Classics Regatta is to be co-hosted by Hamble River Sailing Club and the Royal Air Force Yacht Club on 10th-11th September, the seventh edition of this popular classic yacht event.

Commenting on the event's second visit to the RAFYC (first time was in 2019 with 56 yachts racing), Hamble Classics organiser Jonty Sherwill said: "We are looking forward to the shared hosting by these two great clubs and to welcoming the usual strong showing of pre-1971 designed classic yachts, International Metre yachts, old gaffers and modern classics. Competition should be strong for our four Concours d'Elegance awards and we hope that the recent upsurge in the Folkboat and Dragon classes will continue along with the 6-Metres and XODs. Other classic one-designs are also welcome.

With the RAFYC's enviable riverside location for après sail and HRSC's proven track record of race management, next year's Hamble Classics will build on the active cooperation already established between the two clubs led by Commodores Andy Valentine and Steph Merry, who commented: "Both our clubs are looking forward to hosting the Hamble Classics and celebrate the long history of yachting in the River Hamble with well run racing by HRSC and a warm welcome for visiting crews at the RAFYC..

John Steamer Stanley, Great 18's Historian & Hobart Race Survivor
John in his office. Click on image for photo gallery.

John Steamer Stanley Since the birth of the 18 footer class on Sydney Harbour in January 1892, there has been an incredible number of stories about the competitors, the clubs, the rules, the boats, supporters and sponsors during the following 130 years

Realising the importance of the sport's history, the two Sydney 18 footer clubs' administrators are actively engaged in trying to preserve as much of this history as possible and are fortunate to have the support of the sport's leading historian, John 'Steamer' Stanley to accomplish the task.

'Steamer' is not only a top-quality historian who acts with skilful devotion, he is a former Australian 18 footer champion sailor as well as a highly experienced international champion yachtsman.

John's knowledge and experience, however, could have been lost back in 1998 had he not amazingly survived the ill-fated Sydney-Hobart Race which claimed the lives of three of his crew mates.

The remarkable story of John 'Steamer' Stanley and his fight against the storm of the decade in the 1998 Sydney to Hobart Race is told, by Stuart Diver, in a must-listen podcast called 'The Elements'. 'Water: Sydney to Hobart Yacht Disaster'.

A year later, John was invited to go for a sail with John Winning and Bob Joy on a replica of the famous Aberdare, of the 1930s, and immediately fell in love with the boat. Once his long-time friend, John 'Woody' Winning decided to build six replicas, a fleet began to race each week on Sydney Harbour, and the pair have become the driving force behind the 'Historical 18s' class.

The annual Supercup race, featuring many past 18ft Skiff champions, will be conducted on Sydney Harbour next Friday (December 10).

McCutcheon the comeback king to claim the Auckland Match Racing Championship
The Waitemata Harbour produced dream conditions for sailors for the 2021 Auckland Match Racing Championship supported by HARKEN. A gusty Saturday turned into a consistent 20 knot breeze for Sunday, and it was amazing to see the RNZYS's fleet of Elliott 7's back out on water in a competitive, classy and consistently close weekend of racing.

After 2 disappointing losses to begin his campaign, Robbie McCutcheon and his GCH Racing crew of Sam Street, Chester Duffett, Jack Frewin and Lauchy Wills reset themselves and came storming back to add yet another match racing title to his collection, without dropping another race all weekend.

With Robbie entering the weekend as a strong favorite due being a defending 2-time CentrePort International Youth Match Racing Regatta Champion, having his first two races end in defeat to Megan Thomson and Josh Hyde came as a surprise to many watching. "As a team we had very high hopes on doing well at this regatta and it was a goal to win it for sure", said Robbie.

The final between McCutcheon's GCH Racing and Merton's KNOTS Racing was a brilliant matchup of two crews with huge amounts of potential and a goal to carry momentum into 2022. Both teams have been targeting the AMRC to kickstart a busy sailing season for both teams - KNOTS Racing as a World Match Racing Tour card holding team and GCH Racing looking to follow in their footsteps and target prestigious regattas in New Zealand and internationally. -- William Woodworth

Boot Dusseldorf is to go ahead as planned the German organiser has confirmed today despite some exhibitors cancelling their participation.

The organiser stated today that boot Dusseldorf will take place from 22 to 30 January 2022 with Messe Dusseldorf CEO Wolfram Diener saying: "We have a responsibility towards our exhibitors".

He said he had decided to hold boot 2022 as planned after consultations with the exhibiting branches and consistent implementation of the current Covid Protection Ordinance of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

German magazine Yacht reports the entire Hanseyachts group with Hanse, Dehler, Moody, Fjord and Sealine are not attending. Y Yachts / Michael Schmidt Yachtbau and Oyster have also decided not to come to Dusseldorf.

According to YACHT information, numerous leading brands from France and Italy will also stay away. These include the Beneteau Group, the largest single exhibitor at the fair (Lagoon, Excess, Beneteau, Jeanneau, Prestige etc.) and the second-largest manufacturer, Fountaine Pajot / Dufour. Solaris, Grand Soleil, Pardo, Italia Yachts and Nautor Swan will also be missing.

The organisers say only visitors who comply with the vaccinated or recovered regulation may enter the fairgrounds during boot. In addition, wearing a particle filtering half or medical mask is compulsory in all halls. The latest air exchange regulators also ensure a regular supply of fresh air in the exhibition halls.

X-Yachts has pulled out of exhibiting at next month's boot Dusseldorf 2022, citing the "tense situation" around COVID-19 in Europe.

In a statement, the Danish performance yachtmaker said: "boot Dusseldorf is one of the world's largest boat shows, and X-Yachts is usually strongly represented at the show.

"At boot Dusseldorf 2022 we were looking forward to the world premiere of the New X4³ and also for the first time to display the X-Power.

"But - in respect of the tense situation with Covid-19 - we have made the decision not to display at the 2022 show.

"Of course, the consideration for the safety of guests and employees has our first priority, and instead of boot we are working on a number of exciting activities during the spring of 2022. We will come back with more info about this later."

The team at specialist boat insurers Euromarine are excited to announce the return of Ramsgate Week for 2022 and are proud to be title sponsors once again.

Widely known as the 'friendly regatta' and hosted by the historic Royal Temple Yacht Club, the event aims to accommodate both serious racers and those who are looking for a more laid-back competition. Racing will take place from 17th to 22nd July and see local competitors sailing against visitors from other parts of the UK and Europe.

The week is a great alternative to Cowes, with a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere, plus lots to see and do beyond the sailing. Entrants are treated to a great selection of evening entertainment to unwind after a day on the water.

In a move to increase production for its powerboats under 40 feet, Groupe Beneteau has acquired the Rodman Lusitania shipyard in Portugal.

Located in the northern part of the country, Rodman Lusitania is the second facility the builder has added in Portugal this fall to expand production of its powerboat line under 40 feet. In late October, the company acquired the Starfisher site, about 10 km from the Rodman yard.

"This acquisition will enable us to consolidate our presence in Portugal to serve the very dynamic market for small powerboats (under 40 feet) for dayboating. It will support the Polish and American sites dedicated to these markets, which lacked production capacity," said chairman and CEO Jerome de Metz in a statement.

The Rodman Lusitania yard comprises a total of 645,000 square feet. Idle for some time, Groupe Beneteau expects to resume boatbuilding there in 2022.

* From James Dadd:

I see that both of you have quoted Mr Saunders response to the ARC abandonment of the X-Yacht X4.3 Charlotte Jane III due to steering failure.

I feel that Mr Saunders is being rather harsh and unfair on the builders. No builder knows the intended use of a production yacht once it leaves their shed. It may never be sailed out of sight of the marina and used as a floating caravan, or it may go on a world cruise, they simply don't know. If the builder accounts for every possibility then the cost will escalate and the available space below etc will be compromised for the normal use. So calls have to be made. It is the responsibility of the skipper to make decisions on what extra equipment to commission and install, based on the safety regulations for the event, and their personal opinions on anything else. I do feel that steering failures have caused too many abandonments in recent years, and improvements always need to be made. The OSR requirement for emergency pumps hopefully improves the situation, but a way to steer after a failure has to be considered. I recall that the systems we put in place for the Volvo Open 70s and Volvo Ocean 65s was designed to deal with any eventuality, and they were tested in most. But the complexity and expense was far beyond what you could ever expect a production builder to provide in the sales package, and even if they did, the cost would probably result in no owner taking them up on the offer. Our builders don't work on large enough margins to be blamed for this I feel.
