International Maxi Association introduces Maxi European Championship for 2022
The International Maxi Association is to introduce a new European Championship for maxi yachts in 2022. Taking place over 14-20th May out of Sorrento, Italy with racing based around the Gulf of Naples and Capri, the IMA Maxi European Championship will provide a complete test for competitors, with a mix of inshore and coastal courses and an overnight race.

The championship will begin with the second oldest event in the Italian yachting calendar after the Rolex Giraglia - the Regata dei Tre Golfi offshore race, the 67th edition of which will set sail on Saturday 14th May. This will start from a line off Naples' magnificent Castel dell'Ovo, next to the Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia (CRVI) clubhouse in the Santa Lucia Marina. While the race previously was famous for its midnight start following a party for competitors at the CRVI, in these post-pandemic times, the race will instead depart at 1900 with a separate start for the maxi fleet.

The 150 mile course for the Regata dei Tre Golfi takes the boats northwest from Naples, around the island of Ponza before returning southeast. Competitors then have the choice of leaving Capri to port or starboard before rounding the Li Galli islands off the Amalfi coast, and then returning clockwise around the south side of Capri to the finish off the island's Marina Grande.

Following this, over 17-20 May, the Championship will continue with up to six windward-leeward and coastal races - eligible to the Maxi Yacht Sorrento Trophy - taking place on the north side of the Sorrentine peninsula and close to Capri. Set by the event's own PRO Alfredo Ricci, courses will be on or around the Gulf of Naples with the magnificent backdrops of Capri, the Sorrentine peninsula and Mount Vesuvius. The schedule may include a race around Capri, passing the island's famous landmarks such as the Faraglioni Islands and its Blue Grotto.

Open to all maxi yachts (ie with LH of >18.29m) having an IRC endorsed certificate, the IMA Maxi European Championship will form part of Tre Golfi Sailing Week (www.tregolfisailingweek.com). -- James Boyd / International Maxi Association

Luna Rossa confirm entry for another shot at America's Cup
Luna Rossa is returning for another crack at the Auld Mug after confirming their registration for the next America's Cup.

Skipper Max Sirena made the announcement during the launch of the Italian syndicate's book, Luna Rossa - The unforgettable challenge, in Milan.

"We have sent the 'notice of challenge', which includes the dossier with the documentation necessary to formalise registration for the event," Sirena was quoted as saying in multiple Italian news outlets.

"Now Team New Zealand and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron will verify the validity of the documents: if everything is in order, the challenge will be accepted ".

Luna Rossa, who are backed by the Circolo della Vela Sicilia yacht club, were the Challenger of Record for this year's America's Cup in Auckland, but were replaced by INEOS for the 2024 event.

Led by their unique dual helmsmen configuration of Jimmy Spithill and Francesco Bruni, Luna Rossa won the 2021 Prada Cup for the right to challenge Team New Zealand for the Auld Mug.

50th edition Rolex Fastnet Race - dates for 2023 announced
Following the success of the 2021 Rolex Fastnet Race from Cowes to Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) and its French partners are delighted to announce the date for the next edition of its flagship event in 2023. The 50th edition of the world's largest offshore race will start from the Royal Yacht Squadron line on Saturday 22nd July, 2023, prior to the annual Cowes Week festivities.

"The 50th edition of the Rolex Fastnet Race will run before Cowes Week in 2023 in order to cope with the berthing needs of the large fleet prior to the start on 22nd July, and pre-event registration will again be offered to competitors in Cherbourg. We are excited to be working with our hosts once more for the finish of this great race and expect it to be even better than the 2021 event," says Race Director, Chris Stone.

The biennial 690 nautical mile race is a rite of passage for all those taking part and is one of the very few global events where Corinthian sailors can compete on the same race course as their sporting heroes.

The Race Around Names Management Team
The Race Around, Class40's official round-the-world yacht race, has named its race management team. The event, co-founded by Sam Holliday and Hugh Piggin, will start in the late summer of 2023 and can be raced either solo or double-handed. The traditional course follows the route of the 1973 Whitbread and the BOC Challenge - two races steeped in history. The organisers have chosen an experienced team, which notably officiated the last Vendée Globe, and is made up by Jacques Caraës and assisted by Claire Renou.

Although Jacques and Claire have already overseen many major ocean races, in particular the last Vendée Globe together, this round-the-world race with stopovers will be a first for them. "The playing field on which the Class40s will compete is immense, and even if the weather is similar to a 'classic' round-the-world race, the stopovers allow competing teams to repair and to leave each time with boats at, or as close to, 100% as possible. This will allow the race to bounce back, the sporting level will be very high," explains Caraës. "Even with stopovers, you have to realise that it will be a committed race, competitors are going to race big legs. The Class40s are smaller boats than the IMOCAs (the Vendée Globe boats), so they will be more exposed to the elements, and perhaps less comfortable than in the Southern Ocean, but they're solid, well built vessels," added Renou.

MailASail OSTAR, TWOSTAR and RB&I update
MailASail The 60th Anniversary OSTAR race which is sponsored by MailASail is drawing ever closer. Firm entries totalling 13 have already been received from France, Bulgaria, Poland, GBR, Czech Republic and Italy. With at least the same number yet to commit it is perhaps a timely reminder that the early entry discount is coming to an end on Jan 1st 2022. The RWYC anticipate the best entry for many years in what will be an historic edition of the race.

As we approach double figures, the Twostar continues to grow in popularity and will also start on the 15th May 2022. For further information and to enter either race please contact the organising team on

2 Handed RB&I - now with a twist

22 entries, 6 of which are multihulls, have already been received for this classic offshore race around Britain. Starting on 29th May 2022, the new course will have stop overs in Galway, Lerwick and Blyth, making this the most accessible race to date. By popular demand, a new twist to the race will see a fully crewed class offered which will run alongside the double handed race, again with 3 stop overs and the opportunity to change ½ the crew at one of the designated stop overs. This format offers teams the opportunity to compete in a race around Britain and Ireland whilst not requiring the huge time commitment otherwise seen in such a race. Again, the deadline for early entry discount ends this month and with a limited entry this is sure to fill before then.

For further information and to enter either race please contact the organising team on

I am amazed and disgusted by the news [from ARC]

i\Is there no requirement for these race boat makers to build in safety features? The following should have been a minor incident to be fixed later:

"Drama continued yesterday on the ARC when the five-man British crew of Charlotte Jane III were evacuated onto another boat after steering failure left the vessel disabled.

At 0900 on 01 December the port steering control of Charlotte Jane III also failed, damaging the emergency steering, and leaving the yacht at the mercy of Force 7 winds and 4m swells.

All five crew were safely transferred to Magic Dragon using the life raft. Unfortunately they were unable to transfer the extra water, due to the weather conditions.

The Charlotte Jane III continues to be tracked via the on-board YB tracker with positions relayed to other ARC yachts in the area and to MRCC Ponta Delgada, the controlling SAR station.-- Alison Wood in Practical Boat Owner "

So a very expensive race boat has been abandoned in the open ocean and the crew was put at serious risk.

Pardon my crude language - this is directed at the boat builders... Don't you idiots know about putting an emergency steering connection on the top of the rudder post and providing an emergency tiller or providing some sort emergency connection if there is more than one rudder? How much would that cost compared to the loss of life if there was no one to rescue the crew.

Hint: there is no garage at sea!!! You could have killed these sailors if they had not been rescued and praise be to them! Just reading this article is disgusting and makes me angry.
