World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award
The World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award went to the Sail Africa Youth Development Foundation for increasing the participation of ethnically diverse and female sailors in Durban, South Africa. In the time since launching, the number of girls racing has increased and podium positions have improved year on year. Sailing is now a much more multicultural sport.

The programme has doubled as a life skills initiative, ensuring positive sustainable outcomes around alleviating poverty, reducing inequality, developing education and creating environmental awareness. The foundation won the Ethekwini Maritime Cluster Award for Empowering Youth in 2017 and was profiled as part of this year's World Sailing Steering the Course program.

The 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award celebrates the effective execution or ongoing delivery of high-impact, highly replicable sustainability initiatives that work to protect and restore the health of the ocean, and are aligned with the World Sailing Sustainability Agenda 2030. The award is open to National Federations, sailing clubs, event organizing committees, individual sailors, or any other sailing-related organizations.

The Sail Africa Youth Development Foundation will receive a 10,000 USD prize from 11th Hour Racing to fund their continued sustainability efforts as well as the iconic trophy made from recycled carbon fibre from an America's Cup boat, infused with bio resin.

Fuelling the revival - Wessex Resins
Wessex Resins An unexpected development in the last 18 months is that participation in traditional dinghy classes has gone through the roof... but the dinghies of today are being built with some very non-traditional materials

Demand for Pro-Set epoxy has never been so high or so diverse. This is partly due to the way the pandemic has drawn sailors back to their passion more closely than ever.

Dave Johnson, sales director of Wessex Resins and Adhesives, licensed manufacturers of West System and Pro-set products in Europe, is awestruck by the explosion of interest and engagement in the small-boat scene, particularly in the UK. 'We have just about every UK dinghy builder using our Pro-Set products now. The big names like Ovington and Winder, Maguire, White Formula, RS, Synergy, Hadron and so on.

The Perfect Personalized Xmas Present: Dick Carter - Yacht Designer
Dick Carter In the Golden age of offshore racing
Special limited edition signed by Dick Carter - Great Xmas gift!
With foreword by John Rousmaniere

In 1965 Dick Carter entered Rabbit, the first boat he had ever designed into that year's classic Fastnet race - And Won! Two years later, racing Red Rooster, an even more innovative boat of his own design, he won the Race again, his centreboarder finishing top boat in the Admiral's Cup which contributed greatly to overall victory for the American team!

Over the next decade, Carter and his yachts dominated across the world, winning successive World One Ton Cups with the likes of Tina, Optimist, Wai-Aniwa and Ydra, the Half Ton Cup with Crocodile and Two Ton Cup with Aggressive. During 1972 Wai-Aniwa skippered by New Zealander Chris Bouzaid capped off a great season by finishing Top Boat in the Southern Cross series lifting New Zealand to win the team trophy.

The stories behind other top Dick Carter designed racing yachts include Robin Aisher's Frigate, 2nd boat overall in the 1973 Admiral's Cup, Carina III, a member of the winning team at the same event, Chica Tica II, winner of the 1976 Cape/Rio Race, Dr Recchi's Custom 65 footer Benbow, line honours and handicap winner in the 1977 Middle Sea Race, and William Hubbard's Lively Lady II which dominated the 2006 Bermuda Race prize-giving.

Despite his lack of formal training in naval architecture, Dick Carter made himself into a skilled yacht designer with radical ideas and a record of daring and continuing success. The results his designs achieved, are a direct reflection of his innovative mind. Blessed with what sailors call 'an eye for a boat' - an intuitive understanding of why some boats sail faster and better than others, coupled the ability to transform that understanding into new expressions. He was the first to separate the keel and rudder in ocean racing, the first to introduce a trim tab to the trailing edge of a keel, an idea later adopted by Olin Stephens on his 1967 America's Cup winning 12 metre Intrepid. Dick was also the first to radically reduce weight and windage within the rig, pioneering the idea of internal halyards and shroud tangs. "They don't even do that on America's Cup yachts." Ted Hood remarked at the time.

As John Rousmaniere writes in his Introduction: "This story of the underdog sailor taking on the world and conquering it is often surprising, roundly entertaining, inspiring and instructive. Dick's approach was straightforward: challenge the common wisdom with a daring that he describes as: 'Once a challenge is met successfully, that is enough for me.'"

The last challenge was the first he could not successfully meet - the petroleum crisis during the 1970s that depleted economies and nearly destroyed the boating business. Just a decade after he burst on the scene, Dick Carter retired from boats, and moved to furrow a fresh course through life. Many of his old friends and shipmates were sure he had died. Now Dick is back, larger than life - and with a remarkable story.

Jean Le Cam Wants To Go Again
Fourth in the last Vendee Globe, Jean Le Cam's ambition is to set off again on a sixth consecutive Vendee Globe - he will then be 65 years old – sailing aboard a "simple and accessible" Imoca which he hopes to start building as soon as possible if he can find supporting partners. At the same time, Le Cam is helping manage the projects of young sailors Benjamin Ferre and Violette Dorange.

He wants to go back once again! After five consecutive Vendee Globe, finishing four, unstoppable Jean le Cam is not content to hang up his sea boots and instead he is aiming to take the start of the 2024 race. But it will not be aboard his faithful Hubert (the former Foncia of Michel Desjoyeaux which is the Farr designed winner of the 2008 edition). "The desire to do the race again came quickly for me, something like only two months after the finish," he tells Tip & Shaft. "On the other hand, I told myself that if I go back, it would be a different project with a new boat. I am not going to do a fourth round-the-world race on Hubert."

So what would this new boat look like? "With today's modern boats we are heading towards non-accessibility of the Vendee Globe, towards a level of elitism and that has never been my philosophy. So this project is about making a simple, reliable, accessible boat, with less technical complexity, fewer problems docking in ports, and less effort that cannot really be mastered. So an Imoca with daggerboards, light and easy to handle solo, a boat which would be between 1 and 1.5 knots faster than Hubert over a day."

Several architects have been contacted, Jean Le Cam has a fairly precise idea of what he wants: "The objective is to take inspiration from the new hulls you see in Class40. There is a real evolution on the last generation of 40 footers that I want to apply to a 60 footer."

Wight Vodka Best Sailor's Bar Competion
Wight Vodka Tonight we honour 2014's winner The King & Queen of Hamble UK.

If you've ever come in from the Solent with your boots filled with a little too much sea water, and happened upon The King & Queen in Hamble, you will have a full appreciation of this year's winner...

Dan Hiza, co-owner of 50° North, the company behind Wight Vodka, said "This year's contest had more votes than any of the previous five contests run, and the King & Queen ran away with the competition in the final week with over 1,000 more votes than the runners up. With this said, we can most definitely claim that there is huge passion the world over from our yachting fraternity on shouting about their favourite bars. With the King & Queen taking top honours, Sue and her team at the Pier View in Cowes can be proud of their coming in 2nd, with the venerable Royal Bermuda Yacht Club rounding out the podium finishers in 3rd place. The other bars rounding out the top ten include the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, Foxy's on Jost Van Dyke, the Haven in Lymington, the Union Inn Cowes, the Clipper Bar in Porto Cervo, the Bitter End on Virgin Gorda and the Divers Inn in Alderney on the Channel Islands."

Dan continued "This contest is a blast to run, and the King & Queen definitely deserved the win this year. This is the first year that a British bar has won, and the King & Queen now join The Peter Cafe Sport in the Azores, the Soggy Dollar on Jost Van Dyke, IYAC in Newport, Rhode Island, the Sint Maarten Yacht Club, and the One Bar Playa Blanca in Lanzarote as the World's Favourite. Congratulations and long may the party last!"

From Vendee Globe Legend To Comfortable World Cruiser
Matt Steverson of Seattle, who was one of the crew of three that won the inaugural 710 mile Race to Alaska in 2015 on a borrowed Farrier 25c trimaran.

In 2017 he and his new wife, science teacher Janneke Petersen, set off on a two year Pacific circumnavigation on the 39 ft pilot cutter they'd spent the previous two years refitting.

While cruising the Pacific, the couple spent a lot of time dreaming about their ideal cruising boat, and when they heard the subsequent owner of Duracell was looking to pass her on to a good home, they stepped up to the challenge.

The first episode of The Duracell Project covers the tricky extraction and transport of the boat from the previous owner's backyard to Matt & Janneke's. Eagle-eyed viewers may recognise the truck as that used for both of Tally Ho's moves.

HP30 Class Announces 2022 Programme & Pre-Entered Teams
The HP30 Class recently "met" to approve the 2022 season and confirm entries for the year ahead.

Fourteen teams have already confirmed their entries for the 2022 programme as the class now heads into its seventh season.

Two of the boats have recently changed hands, but most importantly, the boats will remain in the HP30 fleet and in addition, two more teams are looking to join over the winter, so the expectation is to have more than fourteen boats on each start line in 2022.

"Given how close the racing was last year with, it will be incredibly exciting to see these cracking boats racing against each other in 2022", comments Joe Hall, Class Manager.

One of the highlights of the season will be the HP30 Class Nationals hosted by the Island Sailing Club and incorporating the Round the Island Race. Teams will enjoy two days of windward / leeward races, followed by the non-discardable finale, of the RTi. The HP30 Class will be extending invitations to HP30 Class compliant owners to encourage them to come and take part in this cracking mid-summer event.

Now well established the fleet offers a friendly home for owners wanting to combine a little more of a "work out" whilst sailing, than some of the other fleets on offer.

RNZYS Special General Meeting will not go ahead
The Special General Meeting requested by a group of Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron members, set down for Thursday evening, will not go ahead after the requisition was withdrawn on Monday.

Emirates Team New Zealand will continue with its venue negotiations.

The Requisition to call the meeting was lodged with the RNZYS General Committee. After a meeting with one of requisitioners, Jim Farmer QC, the Committee agreed to hold the Special General Meeting following the RNZYS deferred Annual General Meeting, later this week on December 9.

At the meeting a Motion was to have been discussed and put to a vote that there be "added to the Objects of the RNZYS one which provides that the America's Cup, when held by RNZYS, shall always be defended in the waters adjacent to the City of Auckland."

In a letter republished on the Kiwi Defence Website, Farmer has advised that he has recommended that the Requisition be withdrawn.

"I felt it incumbent on me as the representative of those members who had signed the Requisition in good faith to go back to them and advise them that, in my view, there was a real prospect that the SGM would be undermined by the threats made. That communication has taken place and I have their authority to withdraw the requisition, which I have done by letter this morning to the Commodore."

The withdrawal letter should end an acrimonious media battle between Emirates Team New Zealand and its would be funding "partner". -- Richard Gladwell in Sail-World.com
