Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards
Olympic gold medalists Hannah Mills MBE (GBR) and Eilidh McIntyre (GBR) were voted female 2021 Rolex World Sailor of the Year on Thursday 2 December in a virtual ceremony streamed live from the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, UK.

Australia's Tom Slingsby has won the male 2021 Rolex World Sailor of the Year in celebration of his achievements in three competitive classes over the past two years.

Mills and McIntyre claimed gold in Tokyo in the 470 class, a victory which made Mills the most successful female Olympic sailor of all time. This was her second Olympic gold, repeating her victory from Rio 2016 with her new partner. McIntyre won her first gold medal in Tokyo and followed in the footsteps of her father, Michael, who won gold at the 1988 Games in Seoul. The pair received 37% of the votes, making them the clear choice for this year's female Rolex World Sailor of the Year award.

Slingsby secured 29% of the votes after defending his Moth World Championship, winning 13 of the 14 races, securing back-to-back 2019 and 2021 title wins. He has also set the standard in the global SailGP circuit, earning the season 1 title as Team CEO and Skipper of TeamAustralia, which is also currently top of the series leaderboard with just two events remaining in season 2. He capped a fantastic year on the water by being part of the crew of 'Comanche', winners of the 2021 Rolex Middle Sea Race.

A record-breaking 40,000 votes were cast this year to honour the achievements of sailors across all disciplines.

Alinghi enters America's Cup after 11-year absence
Team New Zealand's nemesis Alinghi is back in the America's Cup after an 11-year absence.

NZME understands the Swiss syndicate has paid the initial $1.47 million entry fee for the 37th America's Cup, on the day entries have officially opened. NZME has been told they are working to secure an old practice boat.

It's believed another syndicate has also paid the initial entry fee.

Owned by Swiss billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli, Alinghi famously won the Cup for the first time in 2003, sweeping defender Team NZ 5-0 in the Cup match.

Confirmation of Alinghi's entry and commitment for the 2024 regatta will be a boost for Team NZ and Challenger of Record Ineos Britannia, who have released the protocol but have not yet finalised the venue.

Cork in Ireland, Valencia in Spain and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia have long been talked about as the three overseas bidders while an Auckland defence has still not been ruled out.

Team NZ have set a deadline of March 31 next year to confirm the venue. -- Matt Brown in the New Zealand Herald

Too easy? - Ubi Maior Italia
Ubi Maior As yachts get bigger and bigger, simple tasks become more demanding. When you're manoeuvring and then securing a superyacht in a tight anchorage there is no such thing as having too much help...

An important part of every voyage and one that is often overlooked is how we manoeuvre when close to land. This includes leaving a slip, a mooring, or even an anchorage. It is here in these settings that not only is skill needed in controlling the propulsion and direction of the boat at low speeds but the techniques and sequence of handling the mooring lines as well. NubeWay has developed two clever solutions to reduce this tension in dockside manoeuvres: the Butler and the Mush automatic folding fairleads.

Done well, dockside manoeuvres look effortless. But when not done well they can create tremendous anxiety and tension - not a good way to start or end any journey - or even spell disaster, resulting in damage to the boat or worse, injury to the crew or the guests.

Wight Vodka's Best Sailors Bar Nominations Open
Wight Vodka's Best Sailors Ba As winter closes in on the Northern Hemisphere, thoughts turn to warmer climes and the trade winds. And the famed Painkiller cocktail.

A note from one of our favorite marine PR persons:

At the end of the day, The Beach Bar at Nanny Cay is THE place where everyone gathers. It was a central hub and lifeline to many following hurricanes Irma and Maria. A superb bar to chill after work or to meet friends to watch the sun go down, along with their famous Painkiller Cocktail. Friendly service and welcome to both visiting sailors and 'locals' alike - this has to be the ultimate bar for yachties set on a beautiful beach. There's also the Grill shack for BBQs and The Galley restaurant on the beach. Feel the sand between your toes, sit at the bar or swing seat and watch the world go by....

While we don't have The Beach Bar's recipe, here's the traditional Painkiller:

2 oz Dark Rum (Pusser's recommended)
4 oz Pineapple Juice
1 oz Orange Juice
1 oz Coco Lopez, Cream of Coconut
Nutmeg, for garnish

Fill large (beer or water) glass with ice. Pour all ingredients except the nutmeg into glass. Stir with long spoon until ingredients are mixed. Grate whole nutmeg on top of drink or sprinkle with ground nutmeg.

Mix up a batch, and then type away telling us about YOUR favorite.

ARC fatality and two yachts abandoned mid-Atlantic
French sailor Max Delannoy (73), who was taking part in the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers, has died after being struck by the boom.

Mr Delannoy, along with Philippe Anglade and Jean-Philippe Anglade, were sailing onboard Agecanonix, an X-Yachts X4.3, when the tragedy happened close to midnight on 27 November.

A MAYDAY call was made requesting a medical evacuation, but sadly, Mr Delannoy was declared dead before any outside help could be provided.

Drama continued yesterday on the ARC when the five-man British crew of Charlotte Jane III were evacuated onto another boat after steering failure left the vessel disabled.

At 0900 on 01 December the port steering control of Charlotte Jane III also failed, damaging the emergency steering, and leaving the yacht at the mercy of Force 7 winds and 4m swells.

all five crew were safely transferred to Magic Dragon using the liferaft. Unfortunately they were unable to transfer the extra water, due to the weather conditions.

The Charlotte Jane III continues to be tracked via the on-board YB tracker with positions relayed to other ARC yachts in the area and to MRCC Ponta Delgada, the controlling SAR station.-- Alison Wood in Practical Boat Owner

Stransky secures race victory at ILCA 6 Worlds
Tokyo Olympian Mara Stranksy found her form on day 5 of the ILCA 6 World Championships in Oman.

The young Queenslander shot up the rankings to 6th overall after three solid races including a win in the last race of the day.

Wind conditions continued to challenge the sailors on the penultimate day of racing, but unlike the previous two days there was just a small delay before the race committee fired off three races on the Gulf of Oman.

Despite the mixed results the Australian Sailing Team ILCA 6 squad has formed a strong bond and knows the importance of working together as they move towards Paris 2024.

“I’m really lucky to be part of such a strong, supportive squad,” Stransky shared. “We all grew quite close during the domestic training camps and I’m so proud of how far we’ve come as a squad and owe a huge amount of my development both on and off the water to the girls.”

The Australian ILCA 6 squad was fortunate to be able to train amongst the men’s ILCA 7 squad during the domestic grounding as a result of the COVID pandemic. The athletes saw first-hand how important squad cohesion and development are to group success.

As the regatta is still behind schedule three races are planned for the final day to conclude the 2021 ILCA 6 World Championships.

We start this week's "Sailing World on Water", with a "Master-Class" of spinnaker sailing by Sean Langman, of the Noakes Racing Team. It's a "Much-watch" for any budding sailor.

The team of Frank Cammas and Charles Caudrelier, sailed their ULTIM, into first place in the Transat Jacques Vabre. It's and interesting video on how they handled the huge Trimaran in a range of conditions.

They had big seas and strong winds offshore for the Premier Divisions contesting Middle Harbour Yacht Club's annual, Sydney Short Ocean Racing Championship

Team France wraps up Sailing Arabia - The Tour 2021 title in style
Team France claimed the Sailing Arabia - The Tour 2021 trophy with another win in the final leg at Al Mouj Muscat. The debuting crew led from start to finish, winning seven of ten days. Competition for places behind them was fierce but the fleet was ultimately unable to close the gap to the eventual winners.

DB Schenker, representing The Tour's official logistics partner and flying the flag of Germany with a mixed male and female Omani crew, never gave up - winning two days along the way and finishing second on five occasions - to finish second overall. Organisers Oman Sail ended The Tour in third with Oman Investment Authority fourth. Spanish team Barcelo Mussanah Resort finished fifth and Nastro Rosa of Italy ended the race in sixth.

The final leg of The Tour featured two days of racing. Team France earned another victory on the first day with Oman Sail in second and DB Schenker in third, giving them enough of a lead to secure the title. With first place secured, Team France eased off on the final day which allowed DB Schenker to take the win and confirm their position as runners up. Oman Sail finished second on the day and sealed third place overall. Barcelo Mussanah Resort finished third on the day with Team France fourth, Oman Investment Authority fifth and Nastro Rosa sixth.
