Croatian And Japanese Class 40 Boats Cross Finish Line
The dream of completing the Transat Jacques Vabre race has become a reality for Olympic skier Ivica Kostelic and Japanese sailor Masa Suzuki.

Former world champion skier Ivica Kostelic and his French co-skipper Calliste Antoine crossed the finish line in 17th place out of 45 starters having put in a consistently strong performance despite sailing an older boat.

Croatia Full of Life was built in 2013 and lacks the go-faster scow-bow of the later designs, nevertheless the pair stuck to the leading pack for the whole race.

The Croatian/French pair reached third place at Cape Verde but admitted, at the time, that they would struggle to hold that position against the newer boats. This realistic approach helped them enjoy the race.

Japan's Masa Suzuki and French co-skipper Anne Beaugé sailed their boat Milai across the finish line in 18th place, 3 hours 30 minutes behind Croatia Full of Life.

The light winds that defined the race and dogged many of the newer boats, were actually an advantage for Milai, "There was little wind and this was good for our boat. We are super happy and content, we had good communication on the boat. It's a good experience for me" said Suzuki.

2021 British Yachting Awards
The awards, organised by Sailing Today with Yachts and Yachting magazine, are an opportunity for the readership to vote and give their verdict on some of the incredible talents within the sailing world. It was also a chance to celebrate the finest new yachts, kit innovations, destinations and much more.

The champagne flowed as the winners were announced, confirming not only what a vintage year this has been for sailing, but also what a diverse and fascinating sport this remains.

Guest speaker was Ian Walker, who after a decorated career as an Olympian, coach and skipper in the America's Cup and Volvo Ocean Race, is now the RYA's Director of Racing.

Rob Peake, Chelsea Magazines marine group editor, said: "The British Yachting Awards celebrates the best of the cruising and racing worlds over the past 12 months and there was plenty to celebrate, after one of the most incredible years for the industry and for sailing in general. Our readers decide the winners and it is great to be able to present trophies to amateur and youth sailors, as well as the biggest professional names in the sport."

Notable winners included the remarkable Katie McCabe, who scooped the Youth Sailor of the Year accolade, which was run in association with BoatLife Live.

Elsewhere, octogenarian Murdoch McGregor beat some of the biggest names in sailing to win Sailor of the Year - an award run in association with Pantaenius Sail and Motor Yacht Insurance. McGregor, aged 82, attended the event and told the audience of his solo round Britain sail earlier this year.

Vendée Globe star Pip Hare was a deserving winner of the Outstanding Achievement of the Year trophy, given her performance in the race, which was a winner in its own right in the Event of the Year category, in association with GAC Pindar.

Each winner received a unique trophy made for the ceremony by the historic chandler Davey & Co.

For more information on all the categories, contenders, and of course the winners, visit the British Yachting Awards website and see the February 2022 issue of the magazine, published in the New Year.

Eileen Ramsay - the Queen of Yachting Photography
Eileen Ramsay Eileen Ramsay was at the centre of a unique period in yachting history, and this wonderful book, featuring her classic photography, celebrates an extraordinary woman and her extraordinary subjects. Eileen's heyday was between 1950 and 1970 - a time when eccentrics ruled, records were there for the setting, and women weren't often to be found behind the lens. But Eileen established herself as one of the greatest yachting photographers of her time, taking famous portraits of sailing icons like Francis Chichester and Eric Tabarly, Olympians, including Rodney Pattisson and Keith Musto, and historic pictures from the first Observer Singlehanded Transatlantic (OSTAR) Races. She was the only photographer Chichester allowed on his Gipsy Moth yachts, and commissioned to photograph notorious charmers like Uffa Fox and Max Aitken, learned to stave off their amorous advances.

Eileen, now into her 90s can remember just about every photograph she has taken and relate an anecdote or story about each one. Many of these memories are also recorded in the book.

Eileen Ramsay - the Queen of Yachting Photography, is a spectacular celebration of a pioneering photographer and a fascinating time in yachting history.

Sailing World on Water
Transat Jacques Vabre is finishing in Martinique and as Edmund De Rothschild arrives we have the Daily Report for November 24.21

The most anticipated Class in this year's TJV is the IMOCA 60's and Linkedout is the current leader. Here we have a run down of their performances in the past few days.

This week a shallow depression centred due west of Gibraltar has effectively shut down the famous trades, which typically provide 20+ knot winds at this time of year in the Canary Islands, making it world renowned as a water sports mecca. With a light-to-no wind forecast for the penultimate day of the 44Cup Calero Marinas Lanzarote, the weather gods did tentatively oblige and after more than an hour's wait ashore, a race did get going but was abandoned when the wind dropped away.

The 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships concluded with double Dutch gold as Bart Lambriex and Floris van de Werken took the 49er win and Odile van Aanholt and Elise de Ruyter claimed the 49erFX world title. The first time any nation has ever won both the 49er and 49erFX titles simultaneously.

Change at the top of Swiss Sailing Team AG: Christian Scherrer to succeed Tom Reulein
After 11 years of dedicated work and support for Swiss Olympic sailing, Team Manager Tom Reulein has decided to leave SST AG, with effect from the end of this year. He will be succeeded by former Americas' Cup sailor and sailing expert Christian Scherrer. The change at the top will be accompanied by a reorganisation that will give SST AG a flatter management structure in order to ensure more effective support for elite Swiss sailors.

Swiss Sailing Team AG is taking advantage of the change at the top to make some adjustments to its management structure. Reorganisation measures here have led to the creation of a part-time CEO position, which Christian Scherrer, who is already well known in the world of Swiss sailing, will assume in January 2022.

Scherrer has competed in four America's Cup campaigns and was part of the winning Team Alinghi in 2003 in Auckland, New Zealand. In 2004 he graduated from Zürcher Hochschule Winterthur with a "Diplom" (Master's Degree) in Sport and Management. In 2006, he won, together with Peter Gilmour, the ISAF World Match Racing Championship, and in 2008 he and Sebastien Col finished as the runner-up for the title.

Swiss Sailing Team AG (SST AG) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Schweizerischer Segelverband (Swiss Sailing Federation). SST AG's mission is to ensure support and funding for Swiss elite and Olympic sailors. Support here consists of a tiered funding system for elite and up-and-coming sailors that is designed to help establish these sailors as among the best in the world.

One Global Lipton Trophy 2021
With perfect sailing conditions, 67 boats turned out for the One Global Lipton Trophy on 20 November, the second event of the Top Dog Trophy Series 2020-2021. With 12 to 15kts of easterly wind bestowed on Victoria Harbour, the regular Race Officer team of Gareth and Di Williams opted for a Club line start, allowing members to watch the start sequence at Kellett Island Clubhouse.

Pursuit races work on each boat or Class of boats being given a different start time based on their handicap, which in a perfect race would result in all boats finishing at around the same target time of 1630hrs. The first start was at 1400hrs for the Pandoras and the last boat to start was TP52 Phoenix at 1514 hrs. The fleet was sent to start outside Kellett Island, a long beat up to Shau Kei Wan, then sailed 2 laps between Shau Kei Wan and Hung Hom and 2 laps between Shau Kei Wan and North Point before finishing at Kowloon Bay.

As the day progressed, the wind dropped to around 10kts, prompting RO Gareth Williams to shorten the course at E2 near North Point very close to the target finish time. Pandora Windfall was holding off the faster classes until near the end of the race, before being overtaken by VX One Serendipity just 30m from the finish line. Patrick Pender's Serendipity crossed at 1627hrs, with Windfall crossing in 2nd Place just 28 seconds behind. Dragon Davidloong squeezed into third place beating Ruffian Buster by only 5 seconds.

The One Global Lipton Trophy is the second of four events that make up the Top Dog Trophy Series 2021-2022. The first event was last weekend's Sun Hung Kai & Co. Around the Island Race and the next two pursuit races are the One Global HKRNVR Memorial Vase on the 15 January 2022, and the One Global Tomes Cup on 30 April 2022.

Cork keeps Irish America's Cup dream alive with new cheaper proposal
The dream of staging the 37th America's Cup in Cork, Ireland is still very much alive - writes Justin Chisholm.

Far from giving up on the quest to secure the government funding required to bring the international regatta to the city, the bid team in Cork have put forward an impressive and - importantly - less expensive alternative proposal.

Having received a lukewarm government response to an initial plan to base the AC37 team bases and race village on privately owned land, the group is now pitching the much cheaper option of using publicly owned land to host the international event.

The new proposition would see the technical area and team bases for the 37th America's Cup located at Tivoli Docks, a site within the Port of Cork deep water commercial shipping facility situated on the River Lee (see header image).

Meanwhile the event's public access race village would be located separately upriver at Kennedy Quay (below), close to the city centre and the main train and bus stations.

SailCoach, the leading provider of high-performance coaching support services for dinghy sailors and sailing federations, is pleased to announce the opening of its second SailSase in Valencia, Spain. The city has a rich sailing history, including playing host to the 2007 America's Cup.

The Valencia SailBase will work in conjunction with the long established SailBase on the island of Malta. The coaching services company is responding to the increase in demand for its services. Sailors and federations now have a broader choice of where to access our world class service.

The new Valencia SailBase expansion enables SailCoach to accelerate growth in its services, specifically its "SailCoach lite" product, where yacht club and federation teams can take advantage of hassle-free warm weather training facilities.

In addition, Valencia SailBase provides a "home from home" for teams wanting a base in Europe with year-round training facilities. The Valencia SailBase will provide favourable priced long-term containers parking, giving teams a base to store equipment a day's drive away from the heart of Europe. They can then fly from any part of the world, spending a week or two getting set up and get over jetlag, et cetera, before competing on the European regatta circuit.

Traditionally, the first regatta on the European circuit is Palma Majorca, and with Valencia having daily ferry services to the island, what better starting point could there be? -- Trevor Millar

Dauphin Telecom teamed up for the second year with the Caribbean Foiling Championships as Communication Partner of the event. Dauphin Telecom Data Network will be used to live track all competitors during the 3 racing days (December 10-12, 2021).

"Foiling is an extreme sport, nowadays foilers are capable of reaching speeds of over 40 knots (74km/h). It can be challenging to keep an eye on everybody, especially during the Round the Island Race. The number one priority is that all competitors are safe on the water and that is why we teamed up with Dauphin telecom. They are our Communication Partner and their network is key in tracking all competitors! " says Maxim van den Pol (Organizer of the Caribbean Foiling Championships).

To keep everybody safe while racing around the island the organization took several safety precautions. A part from a mandatory helmet and a Personal Flotation Device, competitors are bound to stay within 2 miles of the shore. There will be safety boats placed on strategic points and gates for the competitors to pass through.

The Dauphin Telecom SIM cards, data and waterproof phone cases will be given to the participants during registration on Thursday 8 December from 9-5PM.
