First Class40 Finishes Transat Jacques Vabre
Antoine Carpentier and Pablo Santurde opened the finish line of the Class40 Transat Jacques Vabre yesterday morning. With the first rays of the Martinique sun, and after 21 days and 22 hours of racing, their Mach 40.4 Redman has outpaced the finish, hour by hour, even minute by minute already, of 19 competitors.

This is what we will remember about this Transat Jacques Vabre with its new course and destination. The battle has been, and still is, raging at all levels. Many of the favorites are at the top of the rankings, and the Swiss sailors on Banque du Leman, Simon Koster and Valentin Gautier, were among the favorites at the start in Le Havre. But there were many pleasant surprises. The third place of the Le Havre duo Cedric Chateau - Jeremie Mion Seafrigo Sogestran), pure products of the Ligue de Voile de Normandie, is one of them.

Pierre Casenave-Pere, associated with Kevin Bloch (Legallais), the Vikings Nicolas Jossier - Alexis Loison (La Manche#EvidenceNautique) as well as the female duo Amelie Grassi and Marie Riou (La Boulangere Bio) enter the Top 10 at the end of very high level performances.

There are still 24 Class40s still in the race, of which ten or so are in a position to finish today, driven by a slightly revitalized trade wind. The ranking currently being established perfectly reflects the specifics of the Class. For example, in the internalisation section, we note the victory of the Spaniard from Santander, Pablo Santurde, but also the place taken on the second step of the podium by the Swiss project of Banque du Leman. It is a Franco-Belgian duo, Jonas Gerckens - Benoit Hantzperg, who sits in 4th place

Brian Thompson and Alister Richardson are not to be outdone; 11th aboard Tquila, a 2014 Mach40, old generation. The women are there as mentioned above, with Amelie and Marie who, on their very first race, took full advantage of their brand new Max 40 La Boulangere Bio launched this year. The contribution of the "Figarists" during this race with such an atypical profile has been underlined. This is reflected in the general ranking where the names of Jonas Gerckens (Volvo), Achille Nebout (Lamotte Module Creation), Nicolas Jossier and Alexis Loison (La Manche#EvidenceNauutique), Pierre Quiroga (Edenred) and Eric Peron (Serenis Consulting) appear in the Top 10.

Sunrise stars at the RORC Oscars
The 2021 Royal Ocean Racing Club Annual Dinner and Prize Giving was held to celebrate a spectacular season of racing. Dubbed the RORC Oscars, over 300 attendees enjoyed a cocktail reception and a three-course gourmet dinner. A glittering array of prestigious prizes were presented to the season’s winners in The Ballroom of the 5-Star InterContinental London Park Lane.

More than 4,000 sailors from around the world, racing in a dazzling variety of 400 boats, took part in the 2021 RORC Season's Points Championship. The world's largest offshore racing series comprised 11 testing races, each with its own coveted prizes.

During dinner, the main stage lit up for the awards ceremony and RORC CEO Jeremy Wilton introduced guest speaker and RORC member Pip Hare to the stage. Pip’s IMOCA 60 Medallia was also one of the winners, being awarded the Dennis P Miller Memorial Trophy for the best British Overseas Yacht. A magnificent result in the 2020-2021 Vendée Globe, saw Pip become the first British skipper to finish the premier solo round the world race. Pip’s 20-minute presentation was warmly received by the RORC members and guests.

RORC Commodore James Neville, assisted by RORC Racing Manager Chris Stone, welcomed the trophy winners to the stage. There was a standing ovation for the overall winner of the 2021 RORC Season's Points Championship, Tom Kneen’s JPK 1180 Sunrise. The team received a huge haul of prizes including the Jazz Trophy for winning IRC Overall and the Somerset Memorial Trophy for RORC Yacht of the Year.

Sunrise’s victorious season is unprecedented in the 21-year history of the Championship. Winning the RORC Season’s Points Championship by 133 points, including overall wins under IRC in the East Coast Race and the Morgan Cup. The zenith of Sunrise’s success came when Tom Kneen became the first British skipper to win the Rolex Fastnet Race since 2003. -- Louay Habib

Nylon 8-plait: the combination of two excellent products in our “mooring and anchoring” portfolio
Nylon 8-plait Mooring ropes are the most important wearing part on board of a ship. They are designed to withstand swells and chafe, thus giving sailors peace of mind when ashore.

The sum of polyamide as the construction material, which is also used in the Palma Elastic for highest breaking loads and maximal elasticity, and the unique 8-plait construction, which is also used in our Newport 8-plait for best elasticity values and ultra-low storage requirements, equals to the ultimate mooring/anchoring line with an excellent breaking load ratio.

The user can expect best abrasion values, a minimal required storage space and diameters ranging from 12mm to 16mm.

Tested by the German YACHT magazine our Nylon 8-plait was named the test winner among 12 competing products. Would you like to find out more about the test process? Read about it here.

Q&A Live Call with 2021 Laser/ ILCA 7 World Champion, Tom Saunders...
Earlier this month Tom Saunders was crowned the ILCA 7 (Laser) World Champion in Barcelona. The talented New Zealander has been chipping away at his craft for many years, winning a few big things along the way including the Etchells World Championships in 2007 and ISAF Youth World Championships in 2010.

In this week’s Q&A with Road To Gold, we’ll be asking Tom about what made the difference at this year’s Worlds. Was it taking a break from the sport and throwing himself into triathlon? When is the right time to take time out, and when should you focus full-bore on your campaign?

Also, what changed with the coaching input from another great Laser sailor from New Zealand, Michael Bullot? As Tom told Michael Brown from Yachting New Zealand: “Mike changed a few plans around to continue what we worked on at the Europeans. The biggest thing was just mindset, sailing with a lot of freedom. Front footing my decision and backing myself was the key, and they obviously came off pretty well this week. It was great to have Mike with me.”

Join Hamish Willcox and Andy Rice for this in-depth 60 minute Q&A and put your own questions to Tom.

Oman Sail kicks off the 2021 ILCA 6 Radial World Championship
Oman Sail will welcome ILCA Radial sailors from around the world this week for the 2021 ILCA 6 World Championship. Commencing on 29 November through to 6 December 2021 at the Barcelo Mussanah Resort, racing will take place every day in a Men and Women fleet before medallists are decided. Both the men’s and women’s competitions will run concurrently with competitors enjoying a day of practice before the Championships officially start.

The event features several of the world’s top ten female sailors in the class, including 2020 Olympians, world number two and 2018 World Champion, Emma Plasschaert of Belgium and world number four, Elena Vorobeva of Croatia. Agata Barwinska (6) of Poland, Maxime Jonker (8) of the Netherlands, Vasileia Karachaliou (9) from Greece, and Marie Barrue (10) from France will also be taking part.

The Men’s race will include four of Oman’s best ILCA 6 sailors who will all be looking for a strong showing on home waters. Abdulmalik Al HInai, Almoutasim Al Farsi and Ali Al Sadi have impressed on the circuit over the past 12 months and earned their place at the World Championships.

Originally slated to be held in Houston, USA, the event faced cancellation until the Sultanate of Oman was selected as replacement hosts in July 2021 to ensure the championships could still take place and allow the top ranked female and male sailors from 50 nations an opportunity to compete to be the best in the world in their class.

The 2021 ILCA 6 World Championships is not the only sailing event taking place in Oman at this time. The second leg of Oman Sail’s own Sailing Arabia - The Tour is currently in progress in Sur, where a six-team multi-national fleet is embroiled in a coastal raid and in-port race. The next stage will be in Marina Bandar Rowdha from 1-2 December 2021 then at Al Mouj Muscat from 3-5 December for the final leg, medal race and prizegiving ceremony.

America True Establishes $150,000 Community Sailing Scholarship Fund at Oakcliff
Twenty five years after America True challenged for the America’s Cup, its assets are being donated to Oakcliff Sailing, establishing a $150,000 scholarship fund. The America True Scholarship Fund will be available to community sailing graduates, allowing them to train at Oakcliff and become professionals and leaders, on and off the water.

America True, with Dawn Riley as CEO, was the first syndicate headed by a woman and raced with a co-ed crew. The team was also a critical part of the mid-90’s movement to expand sailing opportunities into underserved populations. America True helped develop youth programs across the United States, getting at-risk kids on the water with the motto of “If you can dream it, you can do it.” Riley is now the Executive Director of Oakcliff Sailing, with the goal of building American leaders through sailing.

Scholarships will cover up to 50 percent of the cost of an Oakcliff Acorn or Sapling program for graduates of community sailing organizations.

The America True Scholarship fund is also accepting donations on our website. The 1999-2000 America True retail inventory is also for sale in our online store with all proceeds going to support the fund: oakcliff-sailing-center.square.site/
