Ruyant and Lagraviere storm to victory in the Transat Jacques Vabre
On a beautiful morning off Fort de France in Martinique, the blue and white Guillaume Verdier-designed IMOCA LinkedOut, sailed by Thomas Ruyant and Morgan Lagraviere completed a comprehensive victory in the fifteenth Transat Jacques Vabre on Thursday November 25.

The two Frenchmen enjoyed every minute of their triumph as they crossed the finish line after 18 days, one hour, 21 minutes and 10 seconds at sea at the end of a voyage of 6,691 nautical miles, which they completed at an impressive average speed of 15.44 knots.

This was a thoroughly well-deserved win for Ruyant and Lagraviere who got the boat Ruyant raced to sixth place in the Vendee Globe travelling more efficiently than ever before, as they battled for supremacy with Charlie Dalin and Paul Meilhat on APIVIA and Jeremie Beyou and Christopher Pratt on Charal.

APIVIA 2nd On The Line
Ending the year on a high with a determining performance from Charlie Dalin and Paul Meilhat. Finesse and feeling played out heavily in their race, allowing the APIVIA pair to cloture a celebratory second place in Martinique.

A Well-Deserved Place For The Arkea Paprec Duo
As Sebastien looks ahead to the Vendee Globe 2024, he can only be content with this excellent position fought during the Transat Jacques Vabre 2021.

The satisfied pair arrived at the Fort-de-France dock early this morning after 20 days of challenging conditions on the Atlantic. Rest in Martinique will only be brief for Sebastien as he plans to make a quick turn around and sail back to France tomorrow.

With the podium settled with the arrival of Charal on Saturday, it was rush-hour at the Transat Jacques Vabre finish today in the IMOCA Class, as six boats reached the line spread over just seven hours.

For some time it had become clear that the top-three - LinkedOut, APIVIA and Charal - were in a race on their own but equally, that the battle behind them was being waged hour-by hour for fourth place and beyond in the top-10.

At the front of this group Sebastien Simon and Yann Elies on the Juan-Kouyoumdjian-designed ARKEA PAPREC were trying to fend off Britain’s Sam Davies and Frenchman Nico Lunven on Initiatives-Coeur. And the closing stages were not easy in light winds on the approach to Fort de France.

Class 40 Leaders: One more night...
Antoine Carpentier and Pablo Santurde are finishing their penultimate night at sea this morning. Only one more sleep, and their Redman will start the last approach maneuvers towards the Diamond Rock and Fort de France, where her arrival could be judged on Monday afternoon French time.

If the conditional tense is necessary, as it is for any regatta, this one is strongly tinged with certainty, as the two men have shown such mastery and control since their coup d'etat on November 18. They are still resisting the inspired assaults of all the favorite protagonists of the event, and God knows there are many of them. But their ability to find the right wind in the weakest trade wind, to trigger gybes at the most judicious moments to block any attempt by their opponents to overtake them, has, day after day, chiseled the contours of a predicted triumph, stretching the fleet of their pursuers and ruthlessly skimming the candidates for their throne.

This morning, 340 miles from the finish, there are only a handful of Class 40s still able to take advantage of the slightest twist of fate. Cedric Chateau and Jeremie Mion from Le Havre, especially known for their inshore racing skills, if they manage to hold off the Swiss of Banque du Leman (Gautier - Koster), are on their way to a formidable feat. Unless the Belgian-French Gerckens - Hantzperg (Volvo) manage to get on the podium. As we can see, if the last few miles are only beginning to remove some of the thrilling uncertainties of the Class40 race, it is only after the very last tacks that this Transat Jacques Vabre will deliver its verdict.

Cascade - Persico
Cascade - Persico ...when trickledown really is too small a description

The trickle-down effect is supposed to happen slowly but this time its pace is very fast indeed. Just five months after the end of the 36th America’s Cup, Persico Marine launched a fully engineered concept for a 40ft foiling monohull loaded with America’s Cup technology and systems. But the Persico Fly40 isn’t a leading-edge one-off, it’s a one design class for owner-drivers with a fully managed regatta circuit - and the price, and ongoing cost of ownership, is a lot lower than what TP52 owners, for example, are currently paying. It’s a compelling idea and one that Persico is in a uniquely strong position to deliver.

‘We built two boats for Luna Rossa which took a couple of years and we built the one design arms for all the teams,’ says Mark Somerville, general manager at Persico Marine. ‘That’s when the concept was developed. We put in place the technology and tried to capture as much as we could within the AC period to have that trickle-down effect happen as quickly as possible so we can bring this new technology of foiling boats to the public.’

Team France enjoys a strong start to Sailing Arabia - The Tour 2021
The 11th edition of Sailing Arabia - The Tour returned to grace the clear blue seas just off the coast of the Barceló Mussanah Resort earlier this week with six teams representing five different nations ready to tackle Oman’s premier offshore race. It was the visiting team of Team France, with several sailors making their Tour debut this year, who took an early lead, winning the first and second day of races with a narrow advantage over DB Schenker flying the flag for Germany winning the third day with a mixed male and female Omani crew.

Organisers Oman Sail sit third after the first three days after improving one place each day so far, slightly ahead of Oman Investment Authority in fourth. Hosts Barceló Mussanah Resort of Spain are fifth and Nastro Rosa from Italy, also taking part for the first time, currently in sixth.

With its combination of coastal raids and in-port races, Sailing Arabia - The Tour has become a favourite with Omani sailors and visiting crews taking part in competitive sailing during the winter months.

The opening ceremony took place in the bright Mussanah sunshine which made the water glisten, offering the perfect introduction to Oman for the fleet. Conditions have continued to be perfect for the first two days, ensuring that it is the skill of the teams which determine the outcome. Racing continues at Barceló Mussanah Resort today before the fleet heads to the next leg in Sur for racing between 27-29 November 2021.

From Sur, the Tour then returns north to Marina Bandar Al Rowdha for a coastal raid and in-port race on 1-2 December and then onward to Muscat for the final leg from 3-5 December 2021.

Gilbert & Mcgrane’s 505 Wins The Draycote Dash
Click on image for photo gallery.

Draycote Dash Roger Gilbert and Ben McGrane have won the Fernhurst Books Draycote Dash, the opening event of the Selden SailJuice Winter Series. Taking place over the weekend of 20 & 21 November 2021, The Dash attracted 87 entries.

Light airs greeted the fleet on Saturday for four back-to-back races. One of the successes of last season’s Series, Luke Fisher was fast out of the blocks in the first three races, the Emberton Park competitor sailing his RS Vareo to scores of 1,2,1 under the Great Lakes handicap numbers. With competitors counting their best three scores from the day, Fisher would be able to drop his 11th place in the final heat of the afternoon.

As ever, and maybe even more so after the curtailed racing calendar of the past 18 months, the Draycote Dash attracted a good turnout of a great variety of dinghies. Barry Wolfenden came out on top among the Hadron H2 singlehanders, while in the Phantoms Mike Webster was top dog in a class that attracted sailors like reigning National Champion Ian Stone, offshore veteran Nigel King, and Ian Pinnell, the multiple national and world dinghy champion.

Next event in the Selden SailJuice Winter Series is the Datchet Flyer on the weekend of 11 & 12 December. Secure your place early by booking your spot here:

18ft Skiffs NSW Championship, Race 2
Click on image for photo gallery.

18ft Skiffs NSW Championship, Race 2 Sydney Harbour: The defending champion Tech2 team was back to its best form on Sydney Harbour today when the crew of Jack Macartney, Lewis Brake and Luke Parkinson produced a come-from-behind performance to take an exciting victory in Race 2 of the 2021-22 NSW 18ft Skiff Championship.

In a race which saw the lead change several times throughout the long Southerly course, Tech2 crossed the finish line 22s ahead of last Sunday's Race 1 winner, Noakesailing (Sean Langman, Ed Powys and Josh Porebski).

Yandoo (John Winning, Mike Kennedy and Fang Warren) finished just 6s further back in third place, followed by Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price), Fisher & Paykel (Jordan Girdis) and Finport Finance (Keagan York).

The southerly wind took a toll on the fleet with only 13 of the 21-boat fleet able to complete the course due to gear breakages.

Race 3 of the NSW Championship will be conducted next Sunday. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Nuzman sentenced to more than 30 years in prison for Rio 2016 corruption
Former Rio 2016 and Brazilian Olympic Committee President Carlos Nuzman has been sentenced to 30 years and 11 months in jail for buying votes for the Brazilian city's successful bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Nuzman was found guilty of corruption, criminal organisation, money laundering and tax evasion in a decision announced by judge Marcelo Bretas, head of the 7th Federal Criminal Court in Rio de Janeiro.

The 79-year-old, a former volleyball player who represented Brazil at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, will not be jailed until the appeals process has been completed.

Former Rio de Janeiro Governor Sergio Cabral and Leonardo Gryner, the former director general of Rio 2016, were also sentenced to prison terms.

Cabral was sentenced to 10 years and eight months in prison, while Gryner received a term of 13 years and 10 months.

In a 57-page judgement, it was revealed that between July 2014 and September 2017, Nuzman had "hidden and concealed the origin and ownership of 16 kilos of gold, in the value of BRL1,495,437.63 (£202,000/$269,000/€239,000), arising from illegal activity, upon acquisition and maintenance not declared in a safe in Switzerland".

In October 2017, Nuzman was arrested as part of an investigation called "Operation Unfair Play" on suspicion of organising a $2 million (£1.5 million/€1.8 million) bribe of members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The investigation had been launched after French newspaper Le Monde alleged members of the IOC had been bribed three days before the organisation's Session in Copenhagen in October 2009, where Rio de Janeiro defeated rivals Chicago, Madrid and Tokyo to become the first South American city to be awarded the Olympics. -- Duncan Mackay

The Last Word
Keep in mind that progress is not always linear. It takes constant course correcting and often a lot of zigzagging. Unfortunate things happen, accidents occur, and setbacks are usually painful, but that does not mean we quit. -- Buzz Aldrin
