TJV Ultimes Won By Maxi Edmond De Rothschild
Franck Cammas and Charles Caudrelier have won the Ultime class title of the 15th edition of the Transat Jacques Vabre aboard Maxi Edmond de Rothschild. Going into the race as favourites, they regained their lead on 9th November and never let it go - they led for 98% of the race.

The French pair took 16 days 1 hour 49 minutes and 16 seconds to cover the 7,500 theoretical miles from Le Havre at an average speed of 20.51 knots. In reality, they covered 9,262.13 miles at 24.01 knots.

The hugely experienced Cammas and Caudrelier crossed the line in Martinique today just after 10.16am (15:16 and 16 seconds CET) on a boat they have raced and tested many times.

Franck Cammas said, "We didn't make many mistakes, the boat behaved well. We've been racing hard for 17 days and we've arrived with a boat that's 100% up to scratch. In relation to the competition, we didn't know what it would be like and our confidence has grown day by day. Yesterday we had a bit of stress, with a complicated weather situation for us. We fell into a windless zone and behind the boats behind us were able to gain 200 miles in 12 hours so we started to get scared. In the end, they had the same problem as us much later."

The main thing for me is to still have one more win than Charles! [Laughs; Franck now has four wins, Charles three, in the Transat Jacques Vabre, editor's note] It's true, this race that suits us well."

Bjorn Dunkerbeck Hits World-First Windsurf Top Speed of 103.67kph
Bjorn Dunkerbeck added another accolade to his legendary windsurfing career by posting the fastest ever time on the water with a top speed of 103.67kph (55.97 knots or 64.41 mph during the Lüderitz Speed Challenge in Namibia.

Ever since French windsurfer Antoine Albeau broke the 50-knot barrier, Dunkerbeck has been on the hunt for 100kph after a career that started in 1986 and has featured over 100 Professional Windsurfing Association (PWA) titles and numerous PWA Wave World Championship crowns.

Dunkerbeck's first speed record is now almost 30-years-old when he hit 43.30 knots (80.1kph) in 1992 however - as the technology to measure speed and windsurfing equipment evolved - he kept chasing the next milestone, which led him to what may be the last big one: 100kph.

On Thursday, November 18, in Namibia, Dunkerbeck broke that speed barrier, hitting 103.67kph over a two-second time gap and holding an average speed of 101kph over a 100m stretch of water.

The site of the record, Lüderitz, has become famous for 'The Ditch' - a 500m long canal where the water stays flat even when the wind howls - making it the perfect place as long as you don't crash.

He explained: "No crashes. I try not to crash at that speed because if you do, your day is over."

Despite his age, Dunkerbeck is fired up and now wants to maintain 100kph for over 500 metres and you wouldn't bet against him doing it.

WHAT This issue we celebrate seasonal establishments: it's no small feat to cover the mortgage / taxes / repairs and keep the lights lit when your season is not 12 months long. For some it's a fraction of that. One that's come to our attention from a number of its loyal patrons is the Islesford Dock Restaurant and Gallery- Islesford, Maine

"Fantastic restaurant/bar on an old lobster dock way Down East, Maine. Just off Northeast Harbor/ Southwest Harbor on Mt. Desert Island. Very popular with local sailors and racers who go that way in the summers, spectacular sunsets, fresh off-the-boat lobster rolls to die for."

This restaurant and pub SHOULD be globally famous... or at least as famous as Spongebob Squarepants. From a local TV station:

A Small Maine Island Restaurant Was The Inspiration For The Krusty Krab In 'Spongebob Squarepants'

There's a very good chance you've seen an episode or two of the incredibly popular cartoon "SpongeBob Squarepants". Even if you haven't, you know what the character looks like and may even know that SpongeBob works in a restaurant called the Krusty Krab. But even if you know those things, you may be surprised to learn that the inspiration for that restaurant in one of the greatest cartoons of all-time is tied to the State of Maine. According to the Bangor Daily News, it all started when SpongeBob creator Stephen Hillenburg spent some summers working at the Islesford Dock Restaurant on the Cranberry Isles in Maine.Read

One of their best drinks, with a name all sailors can love: the Old Wooden boat, consists of High West Rye, Vermouth, Orange Bitters & a Seasonal Simple Syrup.

Send us your favorite drink from your favorite bar and they could win this year's Wight Vodka Best Sailors Bar award:

Dick Carter - Yacht Designer
Dick Carter In the Golden age of offshore racing
Special limited edition signed by Dick Carter - Great Xmas gift!
With foreword by John Rousmaniere

In 1965 Dick Carter entered Rabbit, the first boat he had ever designed into that year's classic Fastnet race - And Won! Two years later, racing Red Rooster, an even more innovative boat of his own design, he won the Race again, his centreboarder finishing top boat in the Admiral's Cup which contributed greatly to overall victory for the American team!

Over the next decade, Carter and his yachts dominated across the world, winning successive World One Ton Cups with the likes of Tina, Optimist, Wai-Aniwa and Ydra, the Half Ton Cup with Crocodile and Two Ton Cup with Aggressive. During 1972 Wai-Aniwa skippered by New Zealander Chris Bouzaid capped off a great season by finishing Top Boat in the Southern Cross series lifting New Zealand to win the team trophy.

The stories behind other top Dick Carter designed racing yachts include Robin Aisher's Frigate, 2nd boat overall in the 1973 Admiral's Cup, Carina III, a member of the winning team at the same event, Chica Tica II, winner of the 1976 Cape/Rio Race, Dr Recchi's Custom 65 footer Benbow, line honours and handicap winner in the 1977 Middle Sea Race, and William Hubbard's Lively Lady II which dominated the 2006 Bermuda Race prize-giving.

Despite his lack of formal training in naval architecture, Dick Carter made himself into a skilled yacht designer with radical ideas and a record of daring and continuing success. The results his designs achieved, are a direct reflection of his innovative mind. Blessed with what sailors call 'an eye for a boat' - an intuitive understanding of why some boats sail faster and better than others, coupled the ability to transform that understanding into new expressions. He was the first to separate the keel and rudder in ocean racing, the first to introduce a trim tab to the trailing edge of a keel, an idea later adopted by Olin Stephens on his 1967 America's Cup winning 12 metre Intrepid. Dick was also the first to radically reduce weight and windage within the rig, pioneering the idea of internal halyards and shroud tangs. "They don't even do that on America's Cup yachts." Ted Hood remarked at the time.

As John Rousmaniere writes in his Introduction: "This story of the underdog sailor taking on the world and conquering it is often surprising, roundly entertaining, inspiring and instructive. Dick's approach was straightforward: challenge the common wisdom with a daring that he describes as: 'Once a challenge is met successfully, that is enough for me.'"

The last challenge was the first he could not successfully meet - the petroleum crisis during the 1970s that depleted economies and nearly destroyed the boating business. Just a decade after he burst on the scene, Dick Carter retired from boats, and moved to furrow a fresh course through life. Many of his old friends and shipmates were sure he had died. Now Dick is back, larger than life - and with a remarkable story.

Teamwork - Musto
WHAT When you are striving to develop a surprisingly complex technical solution to a deceptively steep challenge... then it is often best to focus your resources. Musto plus 11th Hour Racing Team have been doing just that

Musto's OSM range has been designed in collaboration with 11th Hour Racing Team to deliver stylish technical clothing for conscientious adventurers who care about protecting the environment as much as they do themselves. Recently launched into the market, the garments in this ground-breaking range are constructed from One Single Material (OSM) which makes them much easier to recycle at the end of their useful life. This is especially important for the environment, as recycling fibres helps to reduce the overuse of raw virgin materials.

Head of marketing Nick Houchin comments: 'Engineering sustainable technical clothing, with waterproof performance to keep our wearers dry and protected, has traditionally been difficult.. Our partners, 11th Hour Racing, set us the challenge of creating onshore clothing that they could wear in any environment in their everyday lives that would look contemporary and still be technical.

IRC 2022 Rule text published
Following the international IRC annual Congress meeting in October the 2022 IRC rule text is now published online.

The new rule text includes the following changes agreed by Congress: Stored power (auto pilots) for steering is prohibited unless permitted by the relevant notice of race (rule 15.2); IRC measurement condition for boat weight now explicitly includes permanently installed renewable energy features such as solar panels etc. (rule 17.1); and a spar used as a whisker pole to set a headsail or flying headsail only requires declaration if used to leeward (rule 21.3.6). The 2022 IRC rule applies from 1st January 2022, except in countries with June-May validity where the rule will apply from 1st June 2022.

A proposed rule change from Australia to allow a boat to hold two concurrent valid certificates for different configurations was agreed in principle. A pilot scheme will be developed to be tested in Australia and other southern hemisphere countries during 2022, with a view to worldwide rollout if it proves successful.

Sailing Wellness
Sailing Wellness Lindsey Amrani, chats with Simon Collyer, founder of an exciting new 'Blue Health' initiative, Sailing Wellness

You decided to turn your own experience of battling adversity into a springboard for helping others?

A Yes. I founded the Association of Pension & Benefits Claimants CIC to help strugglers and to that end I've written articles that have been published all over the world. However, I've long wanted to really roll my sleeves up and do something more practical, which is where the thinking behind the Sailing Wellness initiative comes in. Military personnel who've sustained physical injuries and/or who suffer from PTSD, depression and stress go through a course at one of five Military Personal Recovery Centres. After this, if they're unable to put on their 'green skins' and serve again, following an evaluation, they either get put into fully supported housing or simply leave the service for civvy street. Trauma, however, can cause people to want to lock themselves away.

There's already a Rustic Recovery programme, where the military gets servicemen out of their houses to do all kinds of rustic work, clearing woodlands, making things (whittling), etc. This gets people mixing with their mates again, while giving them the satisfaction of doing something practical while engaging in a form of 'talking therapy'. Sailing Wellness can be likened to a 'Blue Health' version of that.
