Oman Sail concludes the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships
The 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships, organised by Oman Sail, concluded with a double for the Dutch, and with brits defending title. Odile van Aanholt and Elise de Ruyter (NED) won the 49erFX world title, while countrymen Bart Lambriex and Floris van der Werken took matching golds in the 49er fleet.

In the 49erFX, the Dutch pairing proved that a new team can take on the world. Van Aanholt’s and deRuyter’s respective partners were injured leading up to the worlds. But the strong training community in Holland proved that sailors were interchangeable.

Happy and loose on shore throughout the week, and with the support of both their parents on shore, the pair made the win look easy.

49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships

49er
1. Bart Lambriex / Floris Van De Werken, NED, 92
2. Tim Fischer / Fabian Graf, GER, 94

Convexity defends M32 World Championship title
The M32 World Championships came to an exciting close on Sunday. Eleven teams came from all over the world for 18 races in conditions ranging from 6 to 22 knots on the warm waters of Miami, Florida. When the dust settled, Convexity with helm Don Wilson was able to defend their World Title.

Convexity smashed the competition with three races to spare. Despite Convexity’s regularity at the top of the podium in the last year, there were some doubts going into this most recent competition. They finished mid-fleet at the National Championships in October and though they improved to second at the Pre-Worlds, they were edged out by Anthony Kotoun on team Catapult. Helm Don Wilson erased those doubts with his commanding win this week.

Results:
1. Convexity , Don Wilson, 45
2. Catapult, Anthony Kotoun/ Joel Ronning, 85
3. Inga from Sweden, Richard Goransson, 90
4. Midtown, Larry Phillips, 98
5. Pursuit , Bill Ruh, 101
6. Bliksem, Pieter Taselaar, 105
7. Gravedigger , James Prendergast, 115.4
8. Surge, Ryan McKillen, 116
9. Convergence, Jennifer Wilson, 116.4
10. Vikings, Hakan Svensson, 157.6
11. Leeloo, Harold Vermeulen , 161

Short-Handed Bermuda Return Offers Safer, Fun Alternative to Delivery after Newport Bermuda Race
Newport, Rhode Island: What goes down must come up. And the boats that race to the Onion Patch next June in the 2022 Newport Bermuda Race—the vast majority of them, at least—must make their way back home to the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. To help facilitate a safe and enjoyable journey back, the New York Yacht Club has joined forces with the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club and the Cruising Club of America to create the Bermuda Short-Handed Return, a post-NBR race to Newport.

The inaugural edition of the race will start on Sunday, June 26, 2022, off the town of St. George on Bermuda’s northeast corner and will finish off Newport, R.I. The race is open to singlehanded and doublehanded crews. With the fleet starting together, there is an increased likelihood of boats able to assist in the event of an emergency—each entry will carry a tracker—in addition to the increased vigilance and preparation that comes with any race.

The Short-Handed Return is also hoping to capitalize on the recent increase in interest in short-handed racing, including the ongoing discussion regarding its potential inclusion as an Olympic discipline in 2028 or beyond.

Registration for the race opened last week, and already there are eight entries, ranging in size from 32 to 50 feet. The NOR and the complete entry list can be found here. -- Stuart Streuli

Wight Vodka Best Sailor's Bar
WHAT In this issue we celebrate another epic Irish pub: Cronins of Crosshaven, Cork.

Here's what makes it so great...
A family run pub that has been serving great food and drink to the sailors and boat builders of Crosshaven for decades.

Is there a special drink they make?
Got to be a pint of Murphys. Their local stout, a touch sweeter than others but with the amount they put through the pub it is always fresh and creamy. In July 2020 the Royal Cork Yacht Club will be celebrating their 300th birthday. The craic in Cronin's will be incredible! www.croninspub.com

The last two years have not been kind to this third generation establishment.

In 2020, with the onset of Covid-19, the pub has gone through a number of unprecedented changes. With the unexpected closure of pubs in March 2020 due to the pandemic, the dynamic team began to offer heat at home ready meals, takeaway options and successful online offering of locally produced goods. This then lead to a weekend trade with restaurant offerings.

However, in August 2020, a devastating flood hit the building and a result, the premises is temporarily closed as restoration work is underway.

We look forward to reopening our doors and seeing you all soon. -- Denis and Caroline

Solving the performance and sustainability paradox - 11th Hour Racing Team
11th Hour Racing Team In the endless search for performance, how can sustainability be embedded into new boat builds

Would it surprise you to know that the carbon footprint of building one new Imoca 60 is about the same as the average footprint of manufacturing 105 Renault vehicles? ‘Considering that this footprint has almost doubled from 300 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent 10 years ago to 570- tonnes CO2e today, it's a real wakeup call,’ says Damian Foxall, 11th Hour Racing Team’s sustainability manager. ‘As an industry we’ve been moving much too fast in the wrong direction. We’ve seen amazing gains in performance but the indirect outcome is that our greenhouse gas emissions have gone through the roof. Collectively, we have this tunnel vision about performance at all costs and that has to change.’

We like to think of sailing as inherently sustainable but the uncomfortable truth is that to align with the Paris Agreement – which is the bare minimum of action needed to avoid catastrophic climate change – the racing yacht industry needed to cut its carbon footprint by at least half to achieve this first target by 2030.

18ft Skiffs NSW Championship, Race 1
18ft Skiffs Sydney Harbour: The Noakesailing team of Sean Langman, Ed Powys and Josh Porebski had to battle hard against some strong challenges before taking out Race i of the 2021-22 NSW 18ftf Skiff Championship on a bleak Sydney Harbour today.

In an 18knot SSE wind and very little visibility, Langman and his team were always near the lead but had to withstand a second half of the race challenge by the current Tech2 team before going on to her victory.

When Tech2 capsized after breaking a spreader, Noakesailing went on to score a great 1m55s victory from a consistent Yandoo (John Winning, Mike Kennedy and Fang Warren), with Smeg (Micah Lane, Mark Kennedy and Mike McKensey) another 33s further back in third place.

Fisher & Paykel (Jordan Girdis) finished in fourth place, followed by a wounded Tech2 (Jack Macartney) and Shaw & Partners Financial Services (Steve Thomas).

Noakesailing, Smeg and Finport Finance (Keagan York), Yandoo and Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price) were in the leading group after the first two legs of the course, along with Lazarus Capital Partners (Marcus Ashley-Jones), which was actually out of the race after having been recalled for an 'on course start'.

Race 2 of the NSW Championship will be conducted next Sunday. -- Frank Quealey

America's Cup: RNZYS Committee calls for reality check on NZ based AC37 Match
The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron General Committee have set Thursday December 9, as the date for the Special General Meeting to consider a motion to hold the 37th America's Cup, and all others defended by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron's America's Cup team.

However a second motion has been submitted by the General Committee (labelled "Alternative Two"), is diluted version of the first.

The General Committee says "it does not believe that it would be helpful that either motion is passed".

In a blunt statement to the membership the outgoing General Committee says: "There needs to be a reality check in respect to a New Zealand based AC37 Match. ETNZ needs to secure funding, with local and central Government support, to hold this event in Auckland.

"Unless this happens, we need to consider offshore venues. The consequences of not doing so are potentially dire – no cup defence at all, and giving the America’s Cup back having been unable to stage a defence and meet our obligations under the Deed of Gift.

"This means the loss of the America’s Cup, the loss of our Team New Zealand, and the potential loss of future America’s Cup challenges from the RNZYS, and most likely New Zealand.

"So, while we understand and support the sentiment of the petition and their desire to “have the event in New Zealand”, the answer is not that simple."

The Special General Meeting will be held after the Squadron's Annual General Meeting set for December 9, 2021 at 6.00pm (NZDT) -- Richard Gladwell/Sail-World.com

Rolex World Sailors
On balance, World Sailing got the nominations absolutely spot on for the Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award 2021. All credit to them. It’s an easy one to get so wrong but the right names are in there and it’s now a public vote to decide the winners.

But do you know the reason why they got the nominations, that I will come onto in a moment, so right? It’s because the new generation, the golden generation, are starting to appear on committees that decide these things. This is the best news our sport could ever hope for.

For this nomination process the committee had: Jo Aleh, Theresa Zabell, Santiago Lange, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, and Shirley Robertson – alongside Dee Caffari, Craig Leweck, Yann Rocherieux, and Luca Rizzotti. Now that’s about as good as you can get. -- Magnus Wheatley
