Sodebo Heads For Help As Fleet Spreads Across 1000 Miles
Sodebo 3 is limping to Madeira for repairs as the rest of the Ultimes power on towards Cape Verde. The Class 40 leaders have finally found breeze at Cape Finisterre. Ocean Fifty and Imoca boats are enjoying happier days north of Madeira.

Ultimes - Sodebo runs for repairs

After spending much of the day trying to repair their starboard foil, Thomas Coville and Thomas Rouxel have conceded they will need extra help. Their shore crew are rushing to Madeira where the sailors are expected to arrive Thursday night. It will be a race against time to get the boat fixed and back onto the race course.

"After having taken the mental blow just after the collision, the two Thomases quickly got back on track to find ways to keep racing," explained team manager Jean-Christophe Moussard. "We exchanged photos with them to answer their questions, we identified the few parts we needed to repair as quickly as possible. We're all in warrior mode, we want to go all the way, we're not giving in."

The damage occurred at 01.00 on Thursday morning north of Madeira when Sodebo 3 hit a UFO (unidentified floating object). The boat was in second place at the time.

Meanwhile the remaining four Ultimes are steaming south led by Maxi Edmond de Rothschild (Franck Cammas & Charles Caudrelier) with 80 lead over Banque Populaire (Armel Le Cleac'h & Kevin Escoffier)

IMOCA - and then there were 20

The second IMOCA to have suffered a broken mast this race has officially pulled out. 11th Hour Racing Alaka'i is now docked in La Coruna, Spain where a bitterly disappointed Simon Fisher (GBR) and co-skipper Justine Mettraux (SUI) announced their race was over.

The First Prototypes Expected Into Guadeloupe Tomorrow
The denouement of the 23rd Mini Transat EuroChef is nigh, for the prototypes at least, who are expected to make landfall in Saint-Francois from tomorrow, Friday 12 November. With less than 15 hours to the finish, Pierre Le Roy (1019 - TeamWork), nicely settled in the driver's seat for six days already at the head of the fleet, is continuing to consolidate his lead and with it his place as champion of the leg and the event. Behind him, barring technical glitches, Fabio Muzzolini (945 - Tartine sans Beurre) looks set to hang onto his current second place. However, things could be a little trickier for Tanguy Bouroullec (969 - Tollec MP /Pogo). Indeed, though the winner of the first leg is assured of a podium place in the overall ranking, there's a chance he may be pipped at the post in this second leg by Sébastien Pebelier (787 - Décosail) or Irina Gracheva (800 - Path). Suspense reigns supreme tonight!

This Thursday, Pierre Le Roy has less than 250 miles to go to reach Saint-Francois and complete the 2,700-mile passage that makes up the second leg in this 23rd edition of the Mini Transat EuroChef. Though the skipper from Lille is on a straight-line course for victory, it's out of the question for him to take his foot off the accelerator, even with a cushion of over 80 miles ahead of his closest rival.

Eileen Ramsay - the Queen of Yachting Photography
Eileen Ramsay Eileen Ramsay was at the centre of a unique period in yachting history, and this wonderful book, featuring her classic photography, celebrates an extraordinary woman and her extraordinary subjects. Eileen's heyday was between 1950 and 1970 - a time when eccentrics ruled, records were there for the setting, and women weren't often to be found behind the lens. But Eileen established herself as one of the greatest yachting photographers of her time, taking famous portraits of sailing icons like Francis Chichester and Eric Tabarly, Olympians, including Rodney Pattisson and Keith Musto, and historic pictures from the first Observer Singlehanded Transatlantic (OSTAR) Races. She was the only photographer Chichester allowed on his Gipsy Moth yachts, and commissioned to photograph notorious charmers like Uffa Fox and Max Aitken, learned to stave off their amorous advances.

Eileen, now into her 90s can remember just about every photograph she has taken and relate an anecdote or story about each one. Many of these memories are also recorded in the book.

Eileen Ramsay - the Queen of Yachting Photography, is a spectacular celebration of a pioneering photographer and a fascinating time in yachting history.

Star South American Championship
Ilhabela, Brazil: The first race of the Star South American Championship is scheduled to start Friday, November the 12th at the Yacht Club de Ilhabela (YCI), on the northern coast of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The competition counts on 32 athletes, 16 teams, and the races will continue until Monday, November the 15th, a national Brazilian holiday. The Continental event will have big names such as the great Olympic medalist Robert Scheidt, Star World Champion Jorge Zarif and other national legends of the sport.

The Star South American Championship has been held since 1952, and this is the 51st edition of the traditional competition. The last edition was held in 2019, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the title went to the duo Tomás Hornos (USA) and Pedro Trouche (BRA), here as crew for Marco Szili. Pedro also won the SSL Finals in 2018 with Olympic Finn sailor Jorge Zarif.

Robert Scheidt, who won the 2006 and 2018 editions of the South American will be joined for the first time by Ubiratan Matos. "We've never sailed together before but we had a few days before the event starts tomorrow to get used to each other, get the maneuvers right, and regulate the boat. I enter the competition without any great expectations and I hope to make the most of the competition," said the Olympic medalist in Star in Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

Robert Scheidt, a Brazilian Olympic sports idol, will face high level opponents like Jorge Zarif, who, in this edition, will race alongside Arthur Lopes. The entries also includes World Champion such as Guilherme de Almeida and Samuel Goncalves, who will race alongside Juninho de Jesus and Pedro Lodovici, respectively.

Record Entry for 2022 RORC Transatlantic Race
The Royal Ocean Racing Club, in association with the International Maxi Association (IMA) and the Yacht Club de France, expect a record entry for the 2022 RORC Transatlantic Race. From the mighty Comanche to the miniscule Jangada, 29 teams from all over the world make up an extraordinary entry list. A world class fleet of multihulls and monohulls are scheduled to start the RORC Transatlantic Race on the 8th of January 2022 from Puerto Calero, Lanzarote.

The 3,000 nautical-mile race across the Atlantic to Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina, Grenada, has two major prizes for the monohulls. The overall winner, after IRC time correction, will win the RORC Transatlantic Race Trophy. The IMA Transatlantic Trophy will be awarded for Monohull Line Honours. The star-studded entry list of racing yachts includes teams from Austria, Cayman Islands, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United States of America.

Current entry list

The firm favourite for Monohull Line Honours is the 100 ft (33 m) canting keel maxi Comanche (CAY), skippered by Mitch Booth. Comanche holds the Monohull West-East Transatlantic sailing record (Ambrose Light - Lizard Point. 5d 14h 21m 25s) and has taken Monohull Line Honours in the Rolex Fastnet Race, the RORC Caribbean 600, the Rolex Sydney Hobart, the Transpac and the Rolex Middle Sea Race.

Skipper Mitch Booth confirms that Comanche will be aiming to set a new race record for the RORC Transatlantic Race, which was set in 2018 by Pier Luigi Loro Piana's Supermaxi My Song (10d 05h 47m 11s).

The smallest yacht in the current entry list, both in terms of water-line length and crew, is Richard Palmer's JPK 10.10 Jangada, which will be racing in IRC Two-Handed with Jeremy Waitt as co-skipper. This will be the third RORC Transatlantic Race for Jangada, including an overall victory under IRC in 2019. Jangada was in fine form for last month's Rolex Middle Sea Race, winning IRC Two-Handed in feisty conditions. -- .Louay Habib

First new owner for Hobbs Boatyard in over 100 years\

The landmark site was acquired by Adam Toop in October 2020 as the future home for the Rose Toop Collection.

Substantial investment is planned for the boatyard, which will be operated on a not-for-profit basis and in the absence of sponsorship. Facilities will be both improved and expanded for the benefit of the small community of marine businesses that operate from the site, the boat owners they serve, along with traditional boat clubs and societies. Hobbs will also retain an important presence, continuing their operations on approximately one third of the site, leased back to them on extended terms to ensure continuity.

The restoration, preservation and maintenance of these important craft can be sustained only by actively supporting the relevant artisan skills. The boatyard provides a fertile base to nurture such skillsets and encourage apprenticeships wherever possible.

Lying on the bank of the Thames directly opposite the River & Rowing Museum, the collections are complementary to one another and we look forward to collaborating with the Trustees'.

There was a short but important era of Thames history known as the Golden Age, dating from 1880 to 1940 or thereabouts. The upper river was transformed from a means of transport with occasional bursts of pageantry, to a stream of pleasure. This was aided by an increase of wealth from a key century of innovation and a new transport system that brought people from the city within a day's rail excursion to the Thames between Richmond and Reading.

The Collection began in the late 1960s when hand-built wooden river craft were superseded by fibreglass. Old boats were broken up or abandoned, the traditional building and maintenance skills no longer needed. The collection started with the best examples of pleasure craft that could be found. Criteria were established as follows:

The collection period is 1890-1940. -- William Rose

A forthcoming ruling by the High Court of Justice of Cantabria, the top court in Spain's Cantabria autonomous community, could allow local company Sociedad Anónima de Trabajos y Obras (SATO) to resume construction of a new 272-berth marina in San Vicente de la Barquera on the Spanish Atlantic coast.

The project was put on hold around 20 months ago after a local court ordered SATO to halt construction work. The decision was made after local environmentalist group Ecologists in Action filed a complaint, claiming the investment could endanger the region's natural resources.

Meanwhile, local politicians are also awaiting the ruling, with Cantabria's Minister of Public Works Jose Luis Gochicoa recently declaring that the port's expansion and upgrade is necessary given its strategic role on the Cantabrian coast, reports local daily El Diario Montanes.
