Mini Transat: All About Compromise
As has been the case for the past 36 hours, the 23rd Mini Transat EuroChef fleet - with the exception of three competitors who are favouring a trajectory close to the great circle route - is continuing to zigzag its way down the Atlantic in a bid to gain more southing and hence more pressure, whilst also repositioning itself to the west so as to avoid sailing too great a distance. Everyone is trying to find the best possible compromise then, whilst lining themselves up as best they can in anticipation of a long band of calm conditions sprawled right across the racetrack as they attempt to make for the West Indies. The challenge for the solo sailors will be to work very hard to sidestep this extensive light patch stretching out to 20° North and try to slip along in a narrow corridor of breeze just below that. As such, we'll have to wait until tomorrow evening before we see the competitors really bend their course round to the west.

Among the prototypes, François Champion (950 - Porsche Taycan) is leading the way thanks to being positioned further over to the west than his direct rivals, which logically gives him the edge on the leader board, the latter drawn up in relation to the distance to the goal. He is however making three knots less speed than the little group comprising Tanguy Bouroullec (969 - Tollec MP/Pogo), Sebastien Pebelier (787 - Decosail), Fabio Muzzolini (945 - Tartine sans Beurre) and Pierre Le Roy (1019 - TeamWork), who are sailing within sight of one another 70 miles further south and posting double-figure speeds.

The speed differentials are less striking among the production boats, a category in which Cecile Andrieu (893 - Groupe Adre) pipped Brieuc Lebec (914 - Velodrade) to the top spot at midday this Monday. The former is hurtling along at an average speed of 8.3 knots, which is the exact same speed as her rivals 100 miles further south, Loïc Blin (871 - Technique Voile - Les Entrepreneurs du Golfe, Giovanni Mengucci (1000 - Alpha Lyre), Giammarco Sardi (992 - Antistene), Miguel Rondon (1006 - Kristina II) and Valentin Foucher (990 - Mini Chorus - CARE BTP).

Adventure Globe 5.80 Transat for amateur built mini's underway!
N88 Etienne Messikommer (33) - Numbatou - Switzerland. Click on image to enlarge.

Adventure Globe 5.80 A group of six Class Globe 5.80 home-built plywood Mini's are making history with the first ever single-handed Globe 5.80 Transat Race setting off at noon today from Lagos Portugal. They are bound for Rubicon Marina in Lanzarote in the Canaries before heading to Antigua in the Caribbean 3600 miles away.

Only four of the six entrants made the start on time. Race Founder Don McIntyre's TREKKA is now due to start on Wednesday 3rd two days late. His final preparation was interrupted running the event. Irishman Jim Schofield arrived at 4am on start day after a 16 hour drive off the UK Ferry with 'Molly Claire" in tow. He has only just finished building the boat! He must now launch and rig the yacht, set up safety gear and fresh food. He may not set off till Saturday five days late. The six yachts will regroup in Lanzarote before setting off on the main race across the Atlantic on NOV. 18th.

It had been a hectic week for all entrants with last minute preparations, including One design Class registrations, Mast pull down stability checks, safety inspections and briefings, plus a few hardy parties!

Boatshed.com came as the gold sponsor of the event and the company's founder and CEO Neil Chapman provided the Race committee boat with his superb Van de Stadt 41 "Supertaff".

As a steady NW breeze powered 10 to 14 knots, the grey clouds disappeared sending skippers and spectator boats into the starting sequence of this 600 nm qualifier under a gorgeous sun and the dramatic backdrop of the Ponta de Piedade cliffs off Lagos.

(Don't) treat me with care - Sicomin
Sicomin No longer does the use of bio-resins and fibre in composite manufacturing mean increased production costs because of the need for much more delicate material handling

Bio-based resins have come a very long way in the last few years. No longer niche products, they are now among the best-selling resin systems on the market. The companies that pioneered these far less toxic and more sustainable, next-generation materials - like Sicomin, the marketleading supplier of liquid epoxy - are now reaping the rewards of their R&D, with massive uptake in major market sectors like automotive, construction and renewable energy, along with some innovative boatbuilders.

A turning point was reached a few years back when Sicomin, a French company with deep roots in highperformance yacht racing, launched a complete range of bio-epoxies whose performance is not just equivalent to the leading petrochemical-based resins on the market, but significantly better - and that's not merely a manufacturer's claim, it's backed up with full DNV GL type approval. Another major milestone was passed this summer when Couach Naval Shipyard became the first to vacuuminfuse a superyacht hull, deck and superstructure in bio-based epoxy. Couach, which builds highperformance military vessels as well as yachts, is renowned for its very high engineering standards.

112 boats entered for 2021 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race
The stage is set for the return of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, with a fleet of 112 boats confirmed for the 2021 edition of the prestigious race.

Among them is Matt Allen's Botin 52 Ichi Ban, the 2017 and 2019 winner of the Tattersall Cup, which honours the overall winner on handicap.

Three super maxis are tipped to battle for the John H Illingworth Challenge Cup as line honours winner, with Peter Harburg's RP100 Black Jack, Seng Huang Lee's Dovell 100 SHK Scallywag and Christian Beck's Juan-K 100 which will soon be rebranded (formerly Infotrack and winner of line honours in 2016 as Perpetual Loyal) part of the line-up.

The introduction of shorthanded racing for the 2021 race has proved popular as 24 crews of two look to be crowned as the inaugural winner of the Two-Handed Division.

Rolex TP52 World Championship
The five-day regatta will take place in the Bay of Palma from 2-6 November. The island of Mallorca is a well-established host venue, having welcomed the competition on a number of occasions, most recently in 2015 and 2019. The area is a popular destination for international sailing, thanks in no small part to the prospect of stable conditions.

The defending world champion is Harm Müller-Spreer's German entry Platoon, and this year's competition will be as keenly contested as ever. Featuring crews from six countries, the entrants include multiple world champion Quantum Racing from the United States as well as challengers from Russia, South Africa, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

Entry registration now open for 2022 ORC Mediterranean Championship
Circolo Remo Vela Italia has announced that registration is open today for Tre Golfi Sailing Week, sponsored by Rolex, and held over 14-21 May 2022. This event will include racing for the 2022 ORC Mediterranean Championship, the 67th edition of the Regata dei Tre Golfi, and the 2022 Maxi European Championship.

The racing venue for this event is in the Bay of Naples between Sorrento and Capri, with shoreside activities being based in Sorrento.

The 2022 ORC Mediterranean Championship will comprise one long-distance race on the same course of the 150-mile Regata dei Tre Golfi (starting on Saturday 14 May) and, from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 May, up to five windward-leeward races on the usual courses in the waters between Sorrento and Capri.

AC37 Crunch Time
Technically the 37th America's Cup could take place as soon as September 2022. While it's unliklely that either the Defender, (Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron), or the Challenger of Record, (Royal Yacht Squadron), are likely to want to take this path to the Cup, the fact is that if the process of delivering the AC37 Protocol stalls, the possibility of a Cup match next year in the northern hemisphere, (or one in January 2023 if in the southern hemisphere), is a real possibility.

Little surprise that there is so much pressure mounting around the publication of the AC37 Protocol which is due on 17 November. It sounds like most of the normal detail around the type of boat, format of racing etc. has been dealt with. The trouble is that the crucial unknown is the venue, a key factor and one that is clearly a big deal. Matt Sheahan explains how and why crunch time is looming fast.

Stormy end to Irish Sailing Youth National Championships
The final day of the Investwise Irish Sailing Youth National Championships was cancelled as gale-force winds swept across Cork Harbour.

However, final results from Saturday's long day afloat weren't initially confirmed as two protests on Sunday morning might have affected the standings.

On Saturday evening, a protest by ILCA6 (Laser Radial) overall leader Eve McMahon saw the Howth Yacht Club sailor extend her lead over Michael Crosbie of the Royal Cork YC when he was disqualified from Race 10 due to a port and starboard incident.

However, the Crosshaven sailor returned to the protest room on Sunday morning. He had his result reinstated as McMahon had not informed the race committee of her protest on Saturday.

McMahon still emerged as ILCA6 Youth National Champion after the tie-break with Crosbie.

Meanwhile, the host club's James Dwyer with Ben O'Shaughnessy won the 29er skiff national title by a single point. This was after a close contest with Timothy Norwood and Nathan Van Steenberge from Royal Irish YC and National YC.

Crosshaven's Rian Collins handsomely won the 38-boat Topper class with a 12-point lead over his clubmate Dan O'Leary. Collins will now be considering whether to move into single or double-handed classes within the Irish Sailing Academy.

Lipton Cup
The 2021 Sir Thomas Lipton Challenge Cup is once again in the hands of the home team! San Diego Yacht Club came out this weekend determined to repeat history and get the Cup back in their name. After sailing only nine of twelve planned races due to light winds in South San Diego Bay, SDYC finished with 4 bullets, 4 seconds, and a fifth. The battle was won today after Race 8 when the team finished first, giving them a 23 point lead over their competitors with only one race left to sail.

"It's all about teamwork," said Skipper Tyler Sinks. The team consisting of Sinks, Lucy Wallace, Nick Kaschak, Nevin Snow, Erik Shampain, Max Hutcheson and Jake La Dow are no strangers when it comes to the Lipton Cup. La Dow and Hutcheson have sailed with Sinks in five consecutive Lipton Cups, Nevin Snow sailed with the team in 2018, Nick Kaschak is back after a 3-year hiatus, and Erik Shampain is one of the most "winningest Lipton Cup sailors of all time." Not only does this crew sail together at this regatta, but most have been actively sailing together the past few years, including in the 2019 and 2021 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup.

Sinks himself has now won four Lipton Cups (2015, 2017, 2018 and 2021) making him the Lipton Cup skipper with the most wins in the past decade. Is it a coincidence that Sinks sailed through the finish in boat number four?

The Grand Final of the Youth Foiling Gold Cup starts with a rock'n' roll
The final event of the YFGC got underway today with two races held in the waters off Cagliari, Sardinia. The competition will decree the overall winner of the circuit, who will receive a voucher worth 50,000 Euros in addition to a wild card entry into the first event of the 69F PRO CUP - a regatta reserved for international professional sailors taking place from 12 to 14 November.

Six teams qualified across the three legs of the YFGC circuit to do battle in the Grand Final: DutchSail - Janssen de Jong, Young Azzurra, Team France, Okalys Youth Project, Team Argentina and Equal Sailing.

After a long wait ashore, the race committee only managed to get racing started after 3 p.m., when a firm south-westerly wind of 14-21 knots, with gusts of up to 26, moved onto the racecourse.

The committee chose an L-shaped course with a reaching start for the first race, while in the second it opted for a triangular course with an upwind start.

In the first race, Team Argentina started well on the windward side, immediately taking the lead and recording the top speed of the day at 28.28 knots. The Argentinian crew then capsized on the downwind leg, closing the race in last place. The win went to Young Azzurra, who were rewarded for their extremely careful management of the conditions. In the second race, the Argentinians chose the right side of the course on the upwind leg, rounding the mark ahead of the fleet and maintaining their lead over the course.
