For our 13th anniversary, are three factors that will be taken into consideration by the editor of EuroSail News, the staff of Wight Vodka and the editor and staff of Seahorse magazine:

1. Best story about why a particular bar is the best in the world. Stories like "I met both my husbands here", "I never knew that there were that many different burgees in the world, let alone at a single establishment", and "A place lost in time, when you walk in it could be 1930 or 2021" will weigh heavily in our decision.

2. Drink recipe created at, or at the very least, SERIOUSLY promoted at, said establishment. Full instructions and ingredients please, so that we can all conduct the requisite research on the subject as the days (in the northern hemisphere) grow shorter and darker.

3. The voting. The top ten establishments based on 1) and 2) will be determined by EuroSail News, Wight Vodka and Seahorse and announced on Friday December 17. Voting starts that day and continue until midnight Tuesday January 11. Our winner will be announced on Wednesday January 12.

All previous winners are eligible for the thirteenth anniversary award.

The Modern Day Tritons
The open space outside the City Gate of Malta's capital, Valletta, is dominated by a fountain comprising three bronze figures of mythological Tritons. Inspired by the Fontana delle Tartarughe in Rome, they represent Malta's links with the sea, their posture gives a sense of potency. After this year's Rolex Middle Sea Race, the tritons could easily be replaced by Maltese sailors, whose affinity with the waters that surround their island home and whose strength in the face of extraordinary conditions, have been unquestionable this past week. The accounts of their experiences over course of the race have elevated the stock and reputation of an already proud seafaring nation.

The HH42 Artie III, jointly skippered by Lee Satariano (15 races) and Christian Ripard (31 races), was the first Maltese boat to finish on the water. Provisionally lying in seventh place overall, second in IRC Class Three, behind another HH42 Ino XXX, and the best Maltese entry under IRC Time Correction by some margin, the team was highly satisfied with their result.

Royal Malta Yacht Club's Rear Commodore House, Mario Debono, was on his fifth race and is representative of the Corinthian spirit of the race. He openly admits that his Sun Odyssey 45 Janissah (71st / 16th in IRC 6) is a cruising boat with little chance of doing well in class or the overall standings. "We are very happy to have finished this race in good shape," Debono said. "I would like other less competitive boats to see that, if you are a good sailor, you can do this race even if your boat is not a racer. It is a real experience, a personal challenge and extremely rewarding." Janissah suffered in the strong winds and rain of the first night, and then again on the last leg sailing upwind into the full brunt of the storm. "We were completely underwater at times, and it was worse than the 2007 race. It was, though, a magnificent race and I am proud we took on everything the Med had to throw at us and came through it."

Three other Maltese yachts took part but were forced to retire: Sean Borg's Xp44 Xpresso, Aaron Gatt Floridia's ICE 52 Otra Vez and Paul Debono's Elan 410 Bait.

Mahon establishes early form at Investwise Irish Sailing Youth National Championships on Cork Harbour
True to her pre-event billing as favourite, Howth's Eve McMahon established an early overall lead in her event at the Investwise Irish Sailing Youth National Championships on Cork Harbour today (Thursday 28th October 2021).

The ILCA 6 (Laser Radial) Youth World Champion delivered two first places and a second in winds ranging from light to medium on the Curlane Bank race course.

Howth Yacht Club's Rocco Wright took the other race win though had a mixed set of results to lie seventh overall. Michael Crosbie of the hosting Royal Cork YC leads the chasing pack in seventh but still some ten points behind McMahon.

Meanwhile, in another strong showing for north Dublin clubs, Malahide's Imogen Hauer with Hugo Micka have a narrow overnight lead in the 420 class as a tight top three battle is already emerging. Lough Ree's Eoghan Duffy with Conor Paul are a point behind the Dublin crew but only on tie-break from Jack McDowell with Henry Thompson, a Malahide and Wexford Harbour combination.

"It was a tricky opening day with a switch in conditions after the first race," said Sean Evans, Irish Sailing's Youth Academy Manager. "We had a tidal effect as well which made laylines interesting.

"There were quite a few very strong performances with plenty of battles at the front of the fleet although the result of the day came from Eve McMahon in the ILCA 6 class."

The four day event steps up a gear on Friday when the remaining classes start racing for the 29er, ILCA 4 (Laser 4.7) and Topper fleets that will bring the turnout up to 130 sailors.

The championship is normally sailed over the Easter school holidays but was postponed to the Autumn mid-term break due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

Sailing World on Water, October 29th, 2021
Here are highlights in the sport of Sailing, in the last seven days.

The multihull and mono-hull line-honours titles were decided at the 42nd edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race and in the process new race records have been set. Crossing the finish line on Sunday 24 October, Jason Carroll's Mod 70, Argo, from the United States, broke the multee-hull race record of 56 hours, 31 minutes and 31 seconds, and set a new outright Rolex Middle Sea Race record of 33 hours, 29 minutes and 28 seconds.

Then after that, arriving in Malta at 04:27:50 C E S T on Monday 25 October, the 100-foot (30.48 meter) Maxi, Comanche, set a new mono-hull race record in an elapsed time of 40 hours, 17 minutes and 50 seconds.

Today the Mini Transat Euro-Chef's 82 starters in Leg 2 of the race from Santa Cruz de La Palma to Saint-Francois in the Caribbean, have had weather gurus predicting that it will be a light air transition. This is in contrast to the major problem with the heavy weather in Leg One, where 80 boats were given a time redress.

November Seven sees the start of the Double Handed Transat Jacques Varb from mainland France to Martinique in the Caribbean.

Nathan Outteridge to return to the America's Cup after signing with Emirates Team New Zealand
America's Cup holders Emirates Team New Zealand have confirmed that Australian Olympic gold and silver medallist Nathan Outteridge has signed with the team to help bolster their Defence attempt during AC37, expected to be in 2024 at a yet to be decided venue.

Outteridge - who lives in Auckland with his wife and young child - won gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games in the 49er class alongside crewmate Iain Jensen.

Taking the silver medal back then was the Kiwi duo Peter Burling and Blair Tuke. The Kiwis who went on to turn the tables on the Outteridge and Jensen at the Rio 2016 Olympics in Brazil before.

Outteridge skippered the Swedish entry Artemis Racing in the 34th America's Cup in San Francisco and at the 35th edition in Bermuda, when Burling and Tuke spearheaded an Emirates Team New Zealand victory.

Whatever his role turns out to be, a bright future surely lies ahead for Nathan Outteridge with Emirates Team New Zealand. It's good news for all America's Cup fans and very well deserved.

Congratulations Nathan - it's good to have you back in the Cup. -- Justin Chisholm

Baruna VMG Yachtbuilders relishes challenging projects. Take Agile for instance, a carbon racing sailing yacht. Or, this year, the restoration of Baruna of 1938, a 73ft wooden racer that lifts the yard's versatility to a new level.

Baruna was drawn by the US naval architecture firm that Olin Stephens and Drake Sparkman, founded in 1929. The yacht won the Bermuda Race in 1938 and, Gain, in 1948. It is now owned by a billionaire who decided to restore it and found a dedicated partner in that undertaking in VMG Yachtbuilders.

The Dutch Hoek Design studio was brought in for the naval architecture, performance optimization, structural engineering and interior and exterior design work.

The deck's underside has the same pattern inside as outside. The angle of the transom flagpole is such that the banner's lowest point almost touches the water. The cockpit floor has a subtle 3 mm flare on each side. All the hardware on deck is custom-made. Much of the metalwork was done by VMG Yachtbuilders unit Super Duplex Hulls. The yacht will compete in two classes for classic racers. That means the sea rail and scepter pots can be removed for racing.

Baruna's restoration is a dress rehearsal of sorts.

"Our ultimate goal is to build a J-Class yacht one day," says van Daal. He has already expanded waterfront capacity and acquired the brands, logos, archives, drawings, designs and rights of the defunct Holland Jachtbouw yard, builder of the J-Class yachts Rainbow and Topaz.

Following the success of the Pointer 22 and 25, Jachtwerf Heeg of the Netherlands has expanded its Pointer series with the new Pointer 30 sailing yacht.

Pointer 30

The Pointer 30 is described as a modern and innovative cabin sailing yacht with a focus on space and luxury.

According to the company, the excellent sailing qualities are the result of a modern sail plan. The yacht boasts clean hull lines and a well-thought-out, roomy cockpit with up to eight seats.

The choice of a tilting steering wheel or a tiller provides for an even more spacious cockpit.

The Pointer 30 comes standard with a closed, safe transom and a swimming platform. With a shallow 1.25m draft, the boat can access a large sailing area and has a CE category B seaworthiness rating.

Key design points include a comfortable workplace, a cool coffee bar and an easily accessible galley. Below deck are four spacious berths, each 2.1m long, an enclosed toilet, and a separate double cabin.

The Pointer 30, like the Pointer 22, was designed by Bosgraaf Yacht Design.

Rupert Holmes casts his eye over the all-new Sunbeam 32.1, a distinctive 32-footer that's conceived as a comfortable weekender

Sunbeam 32.1

The Sunbeam 32.1 is the first model developed under the new ownership of this 70-year-old Austrian yard is the result of a collaboration between established Slovenian naval architects J&J Design and industrial designer Gerald Kiska.

The intention was to break the mould with a boat that's 'modern, stylish and in tune with the times'.

The result is the Sunbeam 32.1, a distinctive 32-footer that's conceived as a comfortable weekender. There are double berths forward and aft, and it's largely open plan, but there's full standing headroom and a separate heads compartment.

The deck layout makes it clear the boat is optimised for comfortable cruising, which is also reflected in the hefty displacement of more than four tonnes.

It's very uncluttered, with all lines concealed and led aft to clutches just ahead of the twin wheels and a German mainsheet system that can be operated from either side of the cockpit.

The first Sunbeam 32.1 will be unveiled at Interboot in Friedrichshafen, Germany, in September and will also be at Düsseldorf in January.

At this year's Monaco Yacht Show, Nautor's Swan staged the world premiere of the Swan 120, the new flagship of its Maxi line.

The Swan 120 is another German Frers design. The 120 was built in Swan's superyacht facility in Pietarsaari, Finland.

Swan 120

German Frers, the Argentine who has designed for Swan since 1981, handled the naval architecture for the 36.4m, 150GT yacht, while Genovese architect Misa Poggi designed the interiors.

With a typical Frers sheerline, the hull lines sweep gently aft from the vertical bow. From around the mid-point, the hull design carries almost all the maximum beam aft, increasing stability when heeled and creating generous volume below.

At deck level, a clean foredeck leads aft to the coachroof, which blends into an expansive, protected cockpit area. The design conceals an electrically controlled bimini top and sprayhood, which is hidden in a flush coachroof cassette when not in use.

At anchor, the cockpit area transforms into a lounge space with versatile deck sofas that can convert into a dining area. Following other Maxi line designs, the Swan 120 also offers 'aisle seats'.

The Swan 120 comes with a comprehensive specification as standard, but there is an extensive list of options including three sail-plan configurations and a telescopic keel that reduces draught from 5.5m to 3.5m. The anchor is launched and retrieved by a hydraulic retracting and folding arm.
