International Masters Regatta
Talents were evident in South San Diego Bay today for the first day of the 2021 IMR. If you look at the scoresheet, you'll find bullets in the top, middle and bottom of the fleet. The four races sailed were there for anyone to take, but one sailor in particular made day one of the regatta a real "field day."

Alan Field came out strong, showing his competitors what to expect from the first race. Field pushed into first place in race one, and then sped up even more in race two, finishing with a solid lead against the rest of the fleet. In race three, he was able to stay on the podium and finished in third place.

The current standings have Alan Field in first place with 12 points, Bill Campbell in second place with 18 points tied with Rod Davis in third place, also with 18 points.

The final race of the day, race four, continued to see more shifts in the breeze and in the scoresheet. The Race Committee saw shifts of up to 20 degrees, but settled on a course axis of 280 degrees. Scott Harris started the day with a 12, 10 and 8, and finished race 4 in first. Campbell followed behind him in second, and Rod Davis sailed his best race of the day taking third place. Finishing the day, places four through seven are only four points apart.

Races will resume Friday, October 22.

Turboing Your Boat Is Exciting. Battcars Are Built for When You'd Like to Immediately 'UnTurbo'
Harken At this year's classic offshore events, we noticed a lot of boats had come out of the sheds 'All Turbo'd Up.' It was impressive. And it started us thinking. For years, Harken Battcar systems have been so low-friction, sailors reef without incident—for instance, blast reaching through a localized squall. Think about doing that with the new monster fat-top main you added during the pandemic and being able to stay on the rum line with most everyone still on the rail. No having to run off to reef. Yes, Battcars add a safety factor that can be critical.

But think of it another way: Reefing with Battcars is so smooth that the option to hold onto more sail longer opens up when you know you can get it out of there before anything hits the fan. As you move back into the shed this fall, consider launching a strategic 'unturbo' project. Around Harken, we say there's no single change you can make that makes so much sense.

Notice of Race for the 2024 Vendee Globe is published
The SAEM Vendee, the organizing entity behind the Vendee Globe, has just published the Notice of Race which details the rules for competing in the 10th edition of the Vendee Globe. Applications for the Vendee Globe 2024 will open on Monday February 14, 2022, at D - 1000 before the Start day, scheduled for November 10, 2024. The qualification pathway to the Vendee Globe is reinforced. The maximum number of racers for the 2024 Vendee Globe is set at 40.

The selection based on Miles established during the previous edition and in line with the Globe Series Championship is renewed. The selected skippers will therefore be those who have covered the most Miles during the Championship selection rounds, the first of which, the Transat Jacques Vabre 2021, starts in less than a month.

It should be noted that the two handed races - such as the Transat Jacques Vabre - will only count half of the miles covered by the skipper.

In an effort to internationalize and open opportunities to female skippers in offshore racing, The Ocean Race 2022 is part of the Championship selection programme, with each skipper then scoring only a quarter of the miles sailed within a limit of 5,000 miles.

In order to promote technological innovation and not penalize new boat projects, the first 13 skippers with a new boat taking the start of a qualifying race will be directly selected.

Finally, the SAEM Vendee gives itself the opportunity, as organizer, to invite up to 1 additional skipper from among the registrants, bringing the maximum number of starters to 40.

Sailing World on Water October 22.21
These are our highlights in the sport of Sailing in the last seven days.

The 42nd edition of the Rolex Middle Sea race starts from the Maltese capital Valletta tomorrow, and travels around Sicily taking in the active volcanoes of Etna and Stromboli. The 120 yacht fleet includes Comanche, Rambler 88, Maserati and the overall race winner at the past two editions, Elusive 2. We will have a race report next week, in the World on Water.

In the Star Sailors League Gold Cup, Test Event 3 Finals, it was between Sweden, Slovenia, Poland and Austria. Sweden gently and comfortably read the wind shifts, Slovenia was happily trailing behind them leaving Poland in third from Austria.

Humankind has always looked to explore, and push its boundaries. We are restless. We are curious. It is this that has led the Clipper Race to help thousands of people step out from their comfort zone and train to become ocean racers. For 25 years, Race Crew, from all walks of life, have had the same purpose: saying yes to discovering personal frontiers, and achieving something extraordinary. The ocean is their race track.

A new IMOCA designed by Sam Manuard for Samantha Davies
Black Pepper Yachts, the Nantes-based shipyard managed by Michel Douville de Franssu, is building a second IMOCA 60 designed by Sam Manuard in the hull moulds of L'Occitane en Provence; it will carry the colors of Initiatives-Coeur and will be skippered by the renowned sailor Sam Davies. Sam will be on the starting line of the next Route du Rhum at the helm of this latest generation boat.

This new Imoca built using the moulds of the former L'Occitane en Provence will not be a "sister ship" in the true sense of the word. Modifications have been made, particularly to the foils, to conform to the new rules.

The hull will be delivered to the Initiatives-Cœur premises in Lorient in December of this year (2021), where its technical team will take charge of the preparation as well as the installation of all the systems on the boat.

The launch, scheduled for May 2022, will allow Sam to take the start of the 2022 Route du Rhum at the helm of this new machine while awaiting the 2024 Vendee Globe.

Australian 18 Footers League Academy
The Australian 18 Footers League has established an exciting new concept to encourage and educate new recruits, or recently recruited, young sailors to the high-speed world of 18ft Skiff racing.

According to organisers, The Academy will fast track learning and teach everyone the right way to set up, care for, sail and be a part of the 18 footers. It will introduce the Academy members to the sailors in the fleet, including, matching every new team with a mentor and show how everything works, so they can quickly enjoy the 18 footers club life. It will also ensure that everyone has a fun, and a successful racing season and will ensure that the 18 footers class remains strong and continues to grow.

The timing of the 2021 program was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in Sydney but still managed the first meeting, on zoom, with current JJ Giltinan world champions Michael Coxon and Ricky Bridge, on September 15.

Australian 18 Footers League sailing manager and co-ordinator of the Academy, Jessica Crisp, says it is "a teaching and mentoring program that gives all new teams and crews the tools to become a great 18ft Skiff sailor."

"Each season all new skippers, crews will be invited to join the Sailing Academy. Interested parties can contact the club to join as well, the more the merrier. The new teams are matched with a mentor to help them throughout the season. In the first season, we have invited four new teams to the 18s, along with three teams who had their first season in 2020-21, plus ten individuals."

The newcomers will get their opportunity to 'mix it' with their more experienced rivals on Sunday when the Australian 18 Footers League stages Races 1 and 2 of the Spring Championship on the first day's racing of the 2021-22 season.
