Yachting Malta Coastal Race The Yachting Malta Coastal Race started at 10:00 CEST on Wednesday 20 October. 42 teams entered the race representing 17 countries. Royal Malta Yacht Club Principal Race Officer, Peter Dimech, sent the competitors on a course of approximately 30 nautical miles north west to Comino. The Coastal Race is the traditional prelude to the Rolex Middle Sea Race, which starts on Saturday 23 October.

Starting from Marsamxett Harbour, the international fleet first rounded the Valletta Harbour Fairway Buoy. After hoisting spinnakers, the yachts were a magnificent sight as they headed past the Sliema seafront and St Paul's Island. The next mark of the course was Comino, with yachts rounding the barren island and leaving it to port. The fleet then turned upwind and took on a tight reach back to the finish at Marsamxett Harbour.

Line Honours went to Frederic Puzin's Ker 46, Daguet 3 - Corum. Puzin and his stellar French crew are no strangers to the Rolex Middle Sea Race, having come second in class in 2019. However, this is a new boat for Puzin, who hails from Marseille, South of France. Daguet 3 -Corum was only a few minutes ahead of Francois Bopp's Swiss Farr 52 Chocolate 3, with Peter Gustafsson's Swedish J/111 Blur, the third boat to cross the finish.

Christoph, Aaron and Maya Podesta's First 45 Elusive 2, winner of the past two Rolex Middle Sea Races, was the fourth boat to finish and the first Maltese boat. In total six boats from Malta were racing including Jonathan Gambin's Ton Ton Laferla, Sean Borg's Xpresso, Sebastian Ripard's Calypso, and both of the Jarhead Young Sailors Foundation J/109s, JYS Jan and JYS Jarhead.

Transat Jacques Vabre
The IMOCA Class has enjoyed a vintage and innovative year in 2021 and now it is time for the finale - one of the classics in the repertoire - the 15th edition of the two-handed Transat Jacques Vabre.

Over the past few weeks the IMOCA bases in Brittany have been a hive of intense activity as crews have prepared for the longest two-handed race in the sport in what in many cases are now finely-optimised boats, with or without foils.

No less than 23 IMOCAs will take the start from Le Havre on November 7th, for this classic test when co-skippers will look to push hard 24 hours-a-day for up to 17 days on a 5,800-nautical mile course, finishing at Fort-de-France on Martinique in the Caribbean.

In addition to foiling front-runners like Charlie Dalin and Paul Meilhat on APIVIA, Thomas Ruyant and Morgan Lagravière on LinkedOut and Jeremie Beyou and Christopher Pratt on Charal, the fleet includes five mixed male-female crews. Among them are Simon Fisher and Justine Mettraux on 11th Hour Racing Team-Alaka'I, Isabelle Joschke and Fabien Delahaye on MACSF and Louis Duc and Marie Tabarly - making her debut in the IMOCA Class - on Kostum-Lantana Paysage.

This race also sees the return to competition of Vendee Globe winner Yannick Bestaven sailing with Jean-Marie Dauris on Maître CoQ IV which was forced to retire from the Rolex Fastnet Race after a collision at the start. Another closely-watched performer will be the new 11th Hour Racing Team IMOCA, Malama, co-skippered by Charlie Enright and Pascal Bidegorry, which had to retire from the Defi Azimut 48-Hours with steering failure. -- Ed Gorman

The New Harken MKIV Ocean Furler.
HarkenMark Four We Asked Cruisers What They Wanted. And We Built That.
We spend time every year asking sailors and professional riggers for feedback on their most (and least) favorite Harken products. Lately it's been oddly predictable: our Mark Four (MKIV) line of headsail furlers rank at or near the very top of their lists. Why? They tell us MKIV has proven to be durable, reliable, and easy to use. It's also straightforward to install.

This assessment drove our decision to start with the technology of that MKIV and develop a new line of furlers for cruisers. This might not sound like a logical leap requiring quantum advances in brainpower. Hmmm. It always looks so obvious at the end.

Our new MKIV Ocean furling line is built and featured especially for cruising. It's smooth-rolling to make every furl a little less physical and bulletproof to stand and deliver for years. It's designed especially for intuitive assembly and retrofit. In fact, it can be installed at the dock without taking the mast down — in an afternoon. The Ocean furler offers Harken's most robust capability. We add the features cruising sailors have been requesting, remove things they want offloaded, and offer MKIV Ocean at a less racey price.

Equal Sailing Equal Sailing is a global initiative founded by Olympic athletes and world champions Giulia Conti and Francesca Clapcich, aimed at inspiring an equal, competitive playing field for male and female sailors. The project provides opportunities for some of the top female sailors from across the world to take part in expert training courses and compete in high-tier regattas aimed at developing key technical and professional skills to further their sailing careers and significantly reduce the gender gap across the world of sailing.

The career-defining opportunities that Equal Sailing provides include the chance to take part in the initiative's own 69F Academy, where a selection of the world's top performing female sailors (20% of whom are selected from among the most promising U25 Youth Sailors) can develop fundamental skills onboard the high-tech high-performance 69F, the only flying monohull besides the AC75. 69F Academy training courses last 6 days and take place prior to each Persico 69F Cup Event and will also be tied to other regattas including the Youth Foiling Gold Cup.

The first event for Equal Sailing will be the 69F Youth Foiling Gold Cup, scheduled to take place from 21st to 31stOctober in Cagliari. Team members will be Silvia Mas (ESP) - 2021 470W World Champion and Tokyo 2020 Olympic athlete, Paula Barcelo (ESP) - 2020 49erFX World Champion and Tokyo 2020 Olympic athlete, Sena Takano (JPN) - 49erFX Tokyo 2020 Olympic athlete and member of the JPN SailGP Team, Jana Germani (ITA) - 2021 49erFX Youth World Champion, and Eugenia Bosco (ARG) - silver medallist at the Pan Am Games in Lima 2019 (Nacra 17) and currently training for Paris 2024.

Herreshoff Lecture Series: American Magic - Built in Bristol
Back in 2017, American Magic began its inaugural campaign to compete for the 36th America's Cup in Auckland, New Zealand. The team revived a long tradition of AC boats being built Bristol, and soon began construction of their first foiling monohull just a few miles up the road from HMM. Nicknamed The Mule, the first 38-foot test boat was launched in Portsmouth in 2018, sailed in Narragansett Bay, and helped American Magic test design ideas and new appendages. Over the following 24 months, the team would build two more foiling monohulls in Bristol, named DEFIANT and PATRIOT. These full-size AC75s were to be used in the AC World Series and the Prada Cup Challenger Series as American Magic competed for a spot in the America's Cup Match. Both AC75s would eventually be sent to Auckland for the competition, and though the campaign fell short of expectations due to an unfortunate crash in January 2021, PATRIOT proved to be fiercely competitive on the race course. The yacht still holds an AC75 racing speed record of 53.3 knots.

Join us on October 21st for a virtual presentation to hear about the campaign from team members Rob Ouellette (Chief Operating Officer), Tyson Lamond (Boat Captain / Shore Team), Robyn Lesh (Design team member), and Dan Morris (Trimmer). The team will talk about their AC36 experiences, what's in store for the team for AC37, and answer questions from the audience. The discussion will be lead by Steve Tsuchiya, America's Cup Hall of Fame Selection Committee President.

Lecture Begins at 7:00pm (Eastern Time)

New Royal Western Yacht Club Ambassador
We are very pleased to announce our next RWYC ambassador, Paddy Hutchings.

Paddy is a Plymouth sailor currently developing a campaign for the Solitare Du Figaro 2022. This is one of the highest profile one-design race events in Europe. The Solitare Du Figaro has been going since 1970. In the past it has been a breeding ground and springboard for sailors such as Phillipe Poupon, Laurent Bourgnon, Yves Parlier, Michel Desjoyeaux, Charles Caudrelier, Armel Le Cleac'h, Jeremie Beyou and Yohann Richomme to name but a few.

He has recently been working with Boris Hermann and, our other club ambassador, Pip Hare within their recent Vendee Globe campaigns. Paddy also holds sustainability high on his agenda. #sail4sustainability is a project launched by Paddy to help educate and raise awareness towards plastic pollution in the ocean. Recently Paddy signed a sponsorship deal with 'Gill Clothing', a big step towards his immediate short term racing goals. He is clearly doing all the right things and we are very excited to be involved with him in his journey towards the biggest challenges our sport is able to offer.

Currently participating in the first stage of that build up this week, at Spi Ouest France in the Figaro 3 class, Paddy also has a website here, where you can find out more about this Plymouth sailor, his plans and how he gets on as he builds his campaign towards his goals.

IQ Foil at San Francisco Open
I just completed a video for the West Marine / US Sailing San Francisco Open regatta.

It's 5:30 and features the IQ Foil portion of the regatta. It primarily looks at Alexander Temko and Brynn Muller in their quest to be named to the Jr. Pan Am Games. It looks at the venue and includes interviews with a several other younger competitors as well as cameos with two of the older competitors talking about sailing with the younger ones. There's also late breaking news about JP Lattanzi being selected to the Youth Worlds US sailing team and wanted to make sure he got acknowledged for that in the video.

I realize it's not Eurocentric but it does tie in with Paris 2024 where all these young guns are looking to make a splash in the newest Olympic sailing class.

I want to thank US Sailing for helping provide on-the-water footage for this video as well as footage from Xports Media's live stream using drones. There is a brief section with footage from US Sailing and the St. Francis YC's Wednesday Yachting Luncheon covering US preparations for the 2024 Olympics. -- Vince Casalaina

Plymouth to host UK's first charging network for electric maritime vessels
Plymouth is set to become the first city in the UK to install a network of shore-side charging facilities for its expanding fleet of electric maritime vessels.

Over the past year, the city has become home to the UK's first marine electric passenger ferry and an electric water taxi that will operate 364 days a year.

However, access to infrastructure is currently a barrier to ensuring further growth in this emerging sector can happen in a coordinated and sustainable way.

With that in mind, a consortium of city partners is joining forces to create Plymouth's Marine e-Charging Living Lab (MeLL), which will provide the pivotal infrastructure required to accelerate innovation and growth.

The project has received more than £570,000 funding as part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition, funded by the Department for Transport and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK.

It will develop a network of charging facilities around Plymouth Sound, offering multiple, flexible sites and responding to the Maritime 2050 route map for maritime net zero. -- Alan Williams
