Furio Benussi's ARCA SGR Wins Barcolana53 Presented By Generali
Photo by Max Ranchi, www.maxranchi.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

WHAT Finishing in 11.16.03 am, Furio Benussi's Arca Sgr wins the the 53rd edition of the Coppa d'Autunno

The Bora wind, in a "katabatic version" with short and intense gusts descending vertically over the Gulf, characterized the course of the race, making strategic the work of the tacticians - committed to deciphering intermittent gusts from five to 42 knots - and of the crews. called to respond effectively to changes in the attitude of ships.

The passage to the first buoy, which took place about 15 minutes from the start, well below the target time of 17 minutes predicted by the instruments on board, saw a gap of 40 seconds between Way of Life and Arca Sgr, and a exceptional third place for Adriatico Europe with Dušan Puh, a Vallicelli 60 with a great past in Barcolana. Positions were unchanged until the move to Mark 2: once upwind, Way of Life had the mainsail hitch broken in the mast after a strong gust. Arca Sgr took the lead in the regatta, starting the race to a great victory, held in Boa 3 in front of Miramare Castle.

Chaotic & DSP - 2021 J/70 UK National Champions
The 2021 J/70 UK National Championships, hosted by the Royal Yacht Squadron, came to a dramatic conclusion on Sunday 10th October. Nick Phillips' Chaotic and Doug Struth's DSP winning the Open and Corinthian titles respectively. The Royal Thames YC Academy team, skippered by Bethan Mathews and helmed by Dom Davis, was third overall.

With high pressure dominating The Solent, racing was only possible on the final day of the three-day event. Four races were completed and with no discard available, every race was keenly contested from start to finish. Two of the leading contenders fell foul of Black Flag race disqualification, ending their challenges for the national title: Paul Ward's Eat Sleep J Repeat (RSrnYC) and Johnathan Calascione's Calypso (RYS).

Consistency was the key to Chaotic's overall victory. The team won the first race, but the real reason for success was consistency, placing in the top three in every race.

Final top five
1. Chaotic - Nick Phillips, 9 points
2. DSP - Douglas Struth, 17
3. RTYC - Academy Dom Lewis, 28
4. Eat, Sleep, J, Repeat - Paul Ward, 29
5. Calypso - Jonathan Calascione, 33

Valerian Lebrun leads after Finntastic opening day of Finn World Masters
Finn racing doesn't get much better than the opening day of the 2021 Finn World Masters on Mar Menor, in Murcia, Spain. With 12-18 knots of wind and in 25 degrees, two races were sailed in near perfect conditions. France's Valerian Lebrun took both race wins to take the early lead from Filipe Silva, from Portugal, and Anthony Nossiter, from Australia. 108 Finn Masters from 20 countries are taking part in the 50th Finn World Masters.

Reading the wind today was the key with frequent shifts and lots of pressure changes. Karel von Hellemond, from The Netherlands led at the top in Race 1, but by the gate Paul McKenzie, from Australia, had taken the lead. He maintained that lead at the second top mark but both Silva and Lebrun were close behind. Lebrun has just come from two years of training for Olympic selection and was clearly the best downwind, moving ahead of McKenzie on the final leg.

Extending to the finish, he took the win, with McKenzie just holding off Silva to take second. After just two hours sleep following an overnight drive from the Sail GP in Cadiz, Nossiter crossed in fourth place.

Racing continues until Friday with six more races scheduled. Two more races are scheduled for Tuesday.

PhenomenalGP
Astonishing. Cadiz delivered. Slingsby delivered. Very rarely do you see racing like it but when you do, it's a treat for the senses. Like watching a heavyweight boxing match when you have skin in the game, watching SailGP when the wind's blowing and the crews are on the ragged edge (sometimes beyond) is something to behold.

As a vision for what spectacle sailing should be, both on and off the water, SailGP has it all and this weekend it put everything, absolutely everything, on display. What a show…

There are stories literally all the way down the fleet - Ben stacked it dramatically when it mattered most, Jimmy's chipping away to get the golden ticket to San Francisco, Delapierre showed much promise, Outteridge was astonishingly brilliant in glimpses, Pete Burling won his first ever SailGP race and the female athletes were utterly outstanding, advancing sailing stratospherically and thoroughly, wholeheartedly, irreversibly enriching the spectacle. Glass ceilings weren't just smashed but shattered forevermore - it was a watershed moment. But the day, the week, the year, belongs to Tom Slingsby.

A more brilliant display of talent you won't see elsewhere. Watch the video below and go directly to Race 5 and the last windward leg layline. Buried in third with literally no passing lanes and the considerable might of Outteridge out in front with Ainslie charging hard for the lead.

Pensacola's David (DJ) Johnson crowned 2021 Fish Class World Champion

Fish Class Pensacola, Florida, USA: David (DJ) Johnson rules the Fish Class for 2021. The Pensacola Yacht Club sailor used three first place finishes to break the 15-point tie with past two-time champion Tom Pace to win the Fish class Worlds sailed last weekend on Pensacola Bay. The top four finishers - Johnson, Pace, Denny Blume and Neil McMillan- were within three points of each other after seven races, dropping their worst score. Johnson dropped an 8 and Pace a 7, Blume a 6.

Racing got underway Saturday with four races sailed. Blume took the lead right out of the gate with a bullet. He ended the first day with 11 points after a run of 1-2-6-2 scores. Pace was in second with 14 points from scores of 2-7-1-4. Johnson trailed in third with 16 points and scores of 3-4-8-1. Johnson and his crew Helen Welch and Dave Roberts were just hitting their stride.

Johnson went on to win the first two races on Sunday with some tough sailing in a shifty east-northeast breeze. He and Pace knew they were in a battle to the end. There were several lead changes throughout the 5th race, but Johnson outlasted Pace at the end as they finished 1-2 . Blume took one of his two 6th place finishes in the series.

In the sixth race, Johnson won again with Pace taking 4th. That set the stage for the final race. Pace needed to put three boats between himself and Johnson. Unfortunately, Pace only managed to finish 2nd to Johnson's 5th. That was enough to tie but the tiebreaker went to Johnson who had those three bullets on the board.

Pace, the class president, was a professional windsurfer in his youth, sailing in international competition on the Olympic level. He has now turned to the Fish Class as a 'mature' sailor's choice. Pace won his first two Fish World Championships 2019 and 2020.

"The Fish Class is making a comeback all across the Gulf Coast," Pace said. "The class has a long history at Pensacola YC and in the Gulf Yachting Association (GYA). The boats were sailed in the First Lipton Cup Regatta sailed over 100 years ago. They were the GYA club class boats for intra-club competition until replaced by the Flying Scot Class in 1969".-- Talbot Wilson

Plans are afoot to increase the number of berths at Figueras Marina in northwest Spain

Work to expand Figueras Marina in Castropol in Spain's northwestern Asturias autonomous community is expected to begin between the second half of 2022 and the first half of 2023, according to municipal authorities.

The project will increase the berthing capacity of the marina, and alternative designs are currently under evaluation, says local daily La Nueva España.

The marina currently accommodates some 146 craft. In recent years, representatives of the Nautical Club of Figueras which operates the facility have emphasized that the demand for berths exceeds supply. José María Alonso, president of the club, told local media that, in order to meet demand, the marina should be fitted with 250 berths.

Castropol has a population of less than 3,500 inhabitants, according to the latest available data from the state-run National Statistics Institute.

The Rossiya Bank, one of Russia's largest banks, is to be involved in turning St Petersburg into the centre of leisure boating in Russia.

The bank has recently signed an agreement with the Committee for Tourism Development of St Petersburg, that will see it providing financial support to the city allowing it to speed up the building of local boating infrastructure.

Prior the pandemic, up to 200 leisure boats a year visited St Petersburg, most of them arriving under foreign flags. The city believes however that it has the potential to attract up to 2,000 boats and 15,000 boating tourists a year.

According to the Yacht Club of St Petersburg, the city still lags behind two other major seaports in the Baltic - Helsinki and Tallinn - in terms of the number of leisure boat visits, but hopes to rectify this with the investment boost.

Analysts predict that each boat visit could generate on average between €5,000-€10,000 for the city's economy, which means that the foreign yacht tourism market could bring St Petersburg an average of €50m-€100m per season.
