Australia Win Spain Sail Grand Prix
A dramatic afternoon in Cadiz ended with Australia winning the Spain Sail Grand Prix to return to the top of the SailGP Season Championship ahead of their home event in Sydney.

The Aussies, who have now won three events this season, beat the United States and Great Britain in the winner-takes-all Final, aided in part by the Brits' early capsize which ended their race just seconds after it began.

The windy conditions in Cadiz claimed not only Great Britain, but also the event hosts themselves - with Spain ruled out the entirety of Sunday's racing due to a capsize in practice which caused major damage to the F50 Victoria.

Despite missing two races across the weekend, Spain still finished ahead of France. New Driver Quentin Delapierre had few expectations for this event given he has had just a week's worth of training on the F50, and two last place finishes on Race Day 1 seemed par for the course.

But Delapierre's potential did shine through during Sunday's racing, as he coped well with the strong winds to power France to a fourth place finish in the final fleet race of the weekend - perhaps hinting at a brighter future for the struggling French team.

Magic Carpet Cubed prevails in Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez maxi racing
A most rewarding week two of Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez for the maxi yachts concluded today with an easterly eventually filling in to provide 45 of the world's largest sailing yachts with a last opportunity to put points on the scoreboard. Given the delayed start, the race committee from the Societe Nautique de Saint-Tropez and the event's co-organiser, the International Maxi Association (IMA), sent the faster maxis and supermaxis in IRC 1 and 2 off on a 25 mile coastal course, while the IRC 3 and 4 mini maxis sailed a shorter 15 mile version in a wind that built to 18-19 knots.

In IRC 1, there was a leader change when Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones' Wallycento Magic Carpet Cubed won, her first victory of the week. This caused George David's Rambler 88 to be displaced from the top spot into second, but by only one point, the US maxi in turn two points ahead of Wendy Schmidt's Botin 85 Deep Blue, winner of Tuesday's race.

The VPLP-Verdier 100ft Comanche won the line honours prize, newly created by the Societe Nautique de Saint-Tropez.

An unbroken string of wins for Terry Hui's Lyra ended today. The Chinese Canadian's Wally 77 is heavily optimised and sailed by a crack squad of pros. She managed to finish last month's Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup with a perfect scoreline and looked set to continue this in IRC 3 B at Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez. But today she finished fourth, the race going to Alessandro del Bono's seasoned crew on the Reichel/Pugh 80 IMS maxi Capricorno. However for Hui there was solace in still comfortably winning IRC 3 B overall by three points from Capricorno, with the 2020 class winner, Philippe Ligier's Wally 80 Ryokan 2, third.

The competition between the former Maxi 72s was also won with straight bullets in the five boat IRC 3A. Here Sir Peter Ogden's 77ft all-black Jethou prevailed in style, scoring three wins ahead of Jim Swartz's Vesper and Peter Dubens' North Star (ex Rán 2).

IRC 4 had a difficult regatta: Failing to finish the first race's lengthy course, then, in the second, several boats failed to sail the correct course, including the famous 12mR French Kiss. Fortunately Yan Cornil's crew on the one time French America's Cup challenger made amends winning today's race. The win overall went to Francois Benais'Shipman 63 Bambo ahead of Thursday's winner Nicolas Piguet's CNB77 Aloha and Maxime Labessouille's Bordeaux 600 Ila 2. -- James Boyd / International Maxi Association

Finn World Masters
Not everyone went out for Sunday's practice race at the 2021 Finn World Masters on the Mar Menor, in Spain, but those who did were treated to divine conditions ahead of what looks set to be a highly memorable championship. After the practice race the opening ceremony was held.

Over the last three days 108 Finn Masters have completed registration and measurement and indulged in a little sailing in fantastic conditions. While northern Europe is mainly bleak, wet and cold, southern Spain is still in the high 20s and the Finn Masters love it.

Sunday's practice race attracted most of the fleet to the warm, blue waters of the Mar Menor. The race team did a great job, laying on three starts, letting the third one go. In 8-10 knots of shifty breeze, Kristian Sjoberg, from Finland led around the top mark and down to the gate before sailing home. 35 boats actually finished the race, which was won by Germany's Andreas Gillwald from Spain's Juan Grau Cases and Sweden's Stefan Sandahl.

Racing begins Monday with eight races scheduled over the next five days.

Luke Patience and Mary Henderson win 60th Endeavour Trophy

Endeavour Half Hull Model Royal Corinthian YC, Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex: After a couple of mixed results on the opening day yesterday, including an OCS, silver medallist Luke Patience and Mary Henderson won the Endeavour Champion of Champions title with two final race wins, writes Sue Pelling.

After a three-hour postponement waiting for the breeze to fill in, the 31-strong fleet enjoyed the two final races of the Investec-sponsored Endeavour Trophy. An 8-9kt northerly breeze was just enough to allow for a decent windward/leeward course but the strong Spring tide was, once again, the dominating factor, that kept competitors on their toes right to very end.

Winning the start was everything today, which was clearly demonstrated by Patience and Henderson, particularly in the first race. It was imperative to take an immediate hitch over to the right-hand side of the course out of the tide. For Patience/Henderson once they were in control after a couple of perfect tacks, they were able to take advantage of the clear air and score their first win of the day, with Tom Morris and Guy Fillmore (RS800) in second place. Their nearest rivals - Ben Palmer and Amy Seabright (Thames A Rater) - finished a close third.

Commenting on today's game plan, Patience added: "In both races we managed to get free of the fray early and that was very important today. We spent a lot of time before the racing chatting about our options and did a ton of transits on the line before the start so we could be accurate enough to get on port early."

A delighted Henderson added: "Winning the Endeavour is a real life achievement and to become the champion of champions, helm or crew, is very special. Also, my dad [Will Henderson] will be delighted because this is his 21-year-old boat!"

Plans are already underway for next year's Investec-sponsored Endeavour Trophy, which is taking place on 8-9 October 2022.

Overall Results (6 races, 5 to count)
1. Olympian 470 - Luke Patience and Mary Henderson (7pts)
2. Thames A Rater - Ben Palmer and Amy Seabright (11pts)
3. RS400 - Nick Craig and Katie Burridge (22pts)
4. RS200 - Arran Holman and Toby Lewis (26pts)
5. Solo - Andy Davis and Pippa Kilsby (38pts)
6. Merlin Rocket - Christian Birrell ad Matt Mee (44pts)

44Cup Scarlino World Championship
A last minute manoeuvre by Nico Poons' Charisma won them the final race of the 44Cup Scarlino World Championship by a mere second, but it was the defending champions on Chris Bake's Team Aqua that defended their title in this 11th RC44 World Championship by one slender point. Like a final curtain call to this World Championship, as well as a reminder of how close the racing always is between the high performance owner-driver one designs, the top eight RC44s all crossed the finish line for the final time within just 20 seconds after 40 minutes of racing.

Off Scarlino, it was another supreme day of sun and 15-20 knot winds, initially from the north but veering northeast.

Going into today just one point had separated the top three - Hugues Lepic's Aleph Racing, Torbjorn Tornqvist's Artemis Racing and Nico Poons' Charisma. So began a day where the podium changed after each of the three races held.

Ambitious Project For Vendee Globe Skipper
A Vendee Globe skipper is working with Airbus Technocentre on the development of a new IMOCA monohull sailing yacht made from declassified carbon fibre and composite remnants.

Armel Tripon from Nantes in France, who finished 11th in the 2020 edition of the single-handed round-the world sailing race, is keen to design a more sustainable boat and is calling on companies to support him in this innovative endeavour.

"I am committed to leading by example with an innovative project that will attempt to initiate alternatives in terms of nautical construction in order to, in time, master and reduce our carbon footprint," said Armel.

Defining the sailing of tomorrow

"Here we define the sailing of tomorrow, ambitious, responsible and collaborative. It is up to all of us, now, to convince companies to join us in this human challenge," he added.

Supporting Armel and AIRBUS are architect VPLP which worked with Airbus more than 20 years ago on the Hydroptère project to design an experimental hydrofoil trimaran and the IMOCA Class, which regulates the construction of these boats.

"Armel Tripon is one the most innovative skippers of the IMOCA class and Airbus is a global, technological benchmark. Reducing carbon footprints in our projects is a priority for the coming years," said Antoine Mermod, president Classe IMOCA.

Class40 launches the Mediterranean Trophy
For the past few months, Class40 has been working on its involvement in the Mediterranean at the request of its Italian, Spanish and Croatian members... and its French ones too. In addition to the existing annual overall Championship Trophy, the European Trophy and the American Trophy, Class40 is now launching the Mediterranean Trophy, the first edition of which will take place in 2022.

Round Italy - a trial run in 2021
Encouraged by its "Southern" members keen to coordinate their schedules to compete in the same races, the class also had the opportunity to create a new event, the Round Italy (Genoa - Trieste).

With the full backing of Class40, vice-president Pietro Luciani took on the task of bringing 2nd and 3rd generation Italian Class40s that had been racing on handicap for years back into the fold. In collaboration with the Yacht Club Italiano and the Socità Velica Barcola e Grignano, a measurement session was therefore organised, allowing for a trial run of this new race to take place in September, with victory going to Karnak, skippered by Stefano Raspadori.

The Round Italy race is a key event for this new Trophy, being a long-distance, short-handed offshore race, and truly representative of what Class40 racing is all about.

The Class40 Mediterranean Trophy Race Programme:
Roma Per Due (Double-Handed) - April
Corsica Med (Double-Handed) - May
Au Large De St Tropez (400 Nm - Solo) - June
Giraglia Rolex Cup Race (Offshore 240Nm - Crewed) . June
Duo Max (Double-Handed) - June
Palermo Montecarlo (Crewed) - August
Round Italy Genoa Trieste (Crewed) - September
Middle Sea Race (Crewed) - October

Did Italian sailors knew of America 150 years before Christopher Columbus?
New analysis of ancient writings suggests that sailors from the Italian hometown of Christopher Columbus knew of America 150 years before its renowned 'discovery'.

Transcribing and detailing a, circa, 1345 document by a Milanese friar, Galvaneus Flamma, Medieval Latin literature expert Professor Paolo Chiesa has made an "astonishing" discovery of an "exceptional" passage referring to an area we know today as North America.

According to Chiesa, the ancient essay - first discovered in 2013 - suggests that sailors from Genoa were already aware of this land, recognizable as 'Markland'/ 'Marckalada' - mentioned by some Icelandic sources and identified by scholars as part of the Atlantic coast of North America (usually assumed to be Labrador or Newfoundland).

Published in the peer-reviewed journal Terrae Incognitae, the discovery comes ahead of Columbus Day 2021

Galvaneus was a Dominican friar who lived in Milan and was connected to a family which held at the lordship of the city.

He wrote several literary works in Latin, mainly on historical subjects. His testimony is valuable for information on Milanese contemporary facts, about which he has first-hand knowledge.

Cronica universalis, which is analyzed here by Chiesa, is thought to be one of his later works—perhaps the last one—and was left unfinished and unperfected. It aims to detail the history of the whole world, from 'Creation' to when it was published.

In translating and analyzing the document, Professor Chiesa demonstrates how Genoa would have been a "gateway" for news, and how Galvaneus appears to hear, informally, of seafarers' rumors about lands to the extreme north-west for eventual commercial benefit—as well as information about Greenland, which he details accurately (for knowledge of the time).
