Star North American Championship
A successful season for the International Star Class in 2021 continues this week with the North American Championship in Newport Beach, California, after two strong championships in Split, Croatia, for the Europeans and in Miami for the Western Hemisphere in the spring.

30 teams, 100% made in USA will be on the starting line tomorrow at 12:30pm local time for the first two races of the event. The level of competition is sky high with six Star world champions in the fleet, four at the helm and two as crew. One of the crew is world renowned skipper Paul Cayard acting as crew in California to sail with his son Daniel, a third generation Star sailor as his grandfather is 1969 Star World Champion and 1964 Olympic Bronze Medalist Pelle Petterson (SWE). The other crew is none other than Bruno Prada (BRA), winner of five Star World Championships, three with stellar skipper Robert Scheidt, one at the last sailed event in Porto Cervo in 2019 with Mateusz Kusznierewicz (POL) and one with Augie Diaz (USA), his skipper this week and defender of the North American title. The other world champions are Eric Doyle, John McCausland and George Szabo, sailing in Newport Beach respectively with Payson Infelise, Brian Terhaar and Guy Avellon.

Bruno Prada is also a double Olympic medalist, and he is not the only one in the fleet. Finn Bronze medalist in Rio 2016, Caleb Paine (USA), will crew for Doug Smith. -- Rachele Vitello

Little by Little
The canvas is starting to take shape of the 37th America's Cup. Little by little snippets of information are coming out into the public domain and in drawing the dots we can start to conclude that it's going to be one hell of a show guided by a progressive Challenger of Record and a really committed Defender. What's happening is that the greatest show on earth in the sailing world is going into a brave new, aware, woke, enlightened era that will capitalise on the goodwill engendered by the 36th Cup in Auckland and deliver the most fantastic event.

What really interested me in the latest Grant Dalton comments, dressed up as broadsides was the line: "we can promise an innovative Protocol which addresses diversity in the sport, sustainability, youth as well as cost control to help enhance entry numbers." Let's break that down and mix in the Terry Hutchinson comments to Tom Ehman on design. Throw this all together in the mixing bowl and a pretty fancy cake is emerging.

Harken FLY Blocks: so strong, so small. Just make sure you tie them…down.
WHAT Today's foiling, skimming, planning, light years-beyond-displacement designs get stiffer every day. Their structures are built to fight flex and transfer ever more breeze into speed. FLY blocks were conceived to help realize that potential. As loads continue to rise, they continue to deliver. And they do it without the bulk and disturbed aero profile that conspire to pull everything back to earth.

"The use of high-tech line with the current braid and cover technology allows Harken to design very strong blocks with smaller sheaves," said Matt Schmidt, Fly's lead designer. "Harken Fly blocks offer the same strength and efficiency as larger blocks, but come in a much smaller, low aero package."

Fly Blocks are built with titanium sheaves wherever optimal--with stainless races and bearings where the job demands and composite components wherever weight can come out. Fly blocks give sailors the power perfect for vang cascades, shroud adjustments, backstay systems, adjustable jib leads and anywhere mighty and tiny need to show up at the same time.

Elegance and Performance at Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez

Saint-Tropez True to yachting's most beautiful gathering of modern and classic boats, the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez kicks off the 23rd edition of Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez on Saturday, September 25, 2021. Rising above the difficulties and uncertainties, the proven formula of this end-of-season highlight ignites the passion of thousands of sailors and boat aficionados alike. More than 250 sailboats, both modern and classic, are awaited by more than 100 volunteers on shore and on the water for two weeks which promise to be exceptional, all starts and race finishes being in front of the sea wall off the port of Saint-Tropez.

The first week of Les Voiles once again offers a winning formula bringing together on local waters the entire spectacular fleet of classic boats with modern sailboats up to 18m28.

Accompanying Ikra, the 12 mJI at the heart of the original Nioulargue challenge – ever present after 40 years of attendance – the armada of classic yachts anticipated for 2021 promises a fiesta for participants and spectators alike. Amongst the nearly 80 classic yachts will be 21 sailboats over a hundred years old battling it out on the water in the wake of the Bermudan Yawl, Sky, launched in 1890 and with 131 years of sailing history.

The Grands Tradition category, certain of which exceed 40 meters overall, has no less than 12 entries sporting the most spectacular Gaff and Marconi rigs: schooners, ketches, cutters and yawls. Stars, out of category in the 2020 edition, include the magnificent red, navy blue and green hulls of the three American P Class, Chips, Corinthian and Olympian which will compete in the Epoque Aurique A class, as will the immaculate Scud, sure to capture the public's heart.

Within the group of vintage Marconis, another celebrity re-joining the famous Manitou formerly belonging to John F Kennedy will be Marge, an elegant Johan Anker design from 1937, entering into cinematic history thanks to the 1952 filming of René Clément's Plein Soleil with Alain Delon and Marie Laforet.

Wetsuit Outlet UK Moth Nationals: Title goes down to the wire on the edge of control
The leaderboard was so tight going into the final day of the Wetsuit Outlet 2021 UK Moth Nationals that there were bound to be changes. The forecast was for strong winds and, as day two of the event demonstrated, different sailors came to the fore in these conditions. This event was wide open!

Once the results were calculated Jim McMillan had done just enough to take the Nationals title by a single point from Eddie, with David Hivey (who had led going into the final day) finishing a point further back after a seventh and a third completed his event. Early event leader Dan Ward was just two points further back in fourth, with Paul Gliddon fifth.

Next up for the fleet is the World Championship at the sailing mecca of Lake Garda in Italy

Three Days Without Racing at the Dragon Gold Cup 2021 by Yanmar
Marstrand, Sweden - It's rare to loose three consecutive days of racing at a major sailing championship, and even rarer to loose three days of racing in the Swedish yachting capital of Marstrand, but sadly that is now the case for the Dragon Gold Cup 2021 by Yanmar, being hosted this week by the Marstrands Segelsällskap and Göteborgs Kungliga Segelsällskap. With three days completed and three to come this is the mid point in a championship that requires a minimum of four races to be completed for the result to be valid. With championship rules calling for very long courses and a maximum of two races per day, the pressure is now on to achieve a valid event and race at least four races in the remaining three days.

For the 70 strong fleet the frustrations are beginning to show. After the loss of almost the entire 2020 and early 2021 international programme due to COVID-19 restrictions and the huge amount of work it has taken to make this regatta possible and to get the teams here, to be confronted with such extraordinary summer weather, in a venue usually known for is exceptionally good racing conditions, is a bitter pill to swallow. It is also a huge disappointment for the Swedish Dragon fleet whose volunteers have put so much time and effort into bringing the regatta to their country once again.

Le Loup Rouge of CMN Arrives Safely In Harbour
The Rolex Fastnet Race has officially come to an end. Le Loup Rouge of Cmn, the last competitor to finish, arrived in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin last night after 8 days, 6 hours, 11 minutes and 28 seconds of racing.

For the Norman skipper, Pierre Legoupil, this arrival is a victory in itself:

"We may be finishing last, but we managed to finish the race, whereas many had to give up. We had a difficult start in the Solent, but we didn't break anything".

The Loup Rouge, built by CMN (Constructions Mécaniques Nautiques), is an Illingworth design classified as a "Boat of Heritage Interest". Designed in 1962 to participate in RORC races, this wooden sailboat still uses the old-school equipment and does not have modern furlers which facilitate manoeuvering.

For technical reasons, the crew had to stop in Penzance, in the south of England for 24 hours.

"Our challenge was to finish the Rolex Fastnet Race," said Pierre Legoupil. "It's very special to do a race like this on a 1962 boat. Everything is old fashioned so we don't have a furler and you have to go to the foredeck for all sail changes. The boat was designed for RORC racing and we wanted to go back to what it was originally designed for. We may have finished last, but we made it when many others gave up. We had a tough start in the Solent, but we didn't break anything."

Final Appeal For Return Of Iconic Bluebird
The Ruskin Museum and the Campbell family have made a final appeal to Bill Smith for the return of Donald Campbell's record-breaking Bluebird K7.

The Campbell family gifted Bluebird to the Coniston Institute & Ruskin Museum in 2006 which then passed it to Bill Smith for restoration. Despite repeated requests, he is yet to return the boat, instead threatening to break it up and insisting that parts used to repair it belong to him.

"Enough is enough," said Donald's daughter, Gina Campbell. "I want my father's boat in the wing that was designed to house it without further delay. Both I and the rest of the family gave Bluebird K7 to the Museum and we back them wholeheartedly in their efforts," she added.

Jeff Carroll, deputy chair of the Board of Trustees at the Ruskin Museum said, "We recognise the work Bill Smith and his team of volunteers have done, but he has broken the agreement we had with him, both legally and morally.

"For him and his colleagues to threaten to take apart this British icon and remove 'his parts' is reprehensible and cannot be allowed as it would destroy the original fabric of this historic record breaker."

The municipality of Puck in northwest Poland has signed a deal worth PLN 33m (US$9m) with local construction firm NDI S.A. under which it will build a new marina with around 100 berths.

Construction is to be completed by the end of September 2023, NDI said in a statement.

With the aim of co-financing the investment, Puck has secured around PLN 22m (US$80.7m) from the European Union's European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The money will be allocated under the fund's budget for the years 2021 to 2027. This means that the EU will cover close to 69% of the project's value.

NDI employs around 400 people in Sopot, in the northern region of Pomerania.

Also based in Pomerania, Puck has a population of slightly more than 11,000 inhabitants.
