Youth Match Racing World Championship
Team Wood: Daniel Pegg, Marbella Marlo, Max Mayol, David Wood (USA) . Photo by Mary Longpre, Longpre Photos. Click on image to enlarge.

Youth Match Racing World Championship Newport Beach, CA: David Wood (USA) of host Balboa Yacht Club “peaked” at just the right time during a summer of youth match racing in which his inter-club rival and friend, Jeffrey Petersen (USA) had beaten him in two major youth match racing events. Both skippers made it to the finals of World Sailing’s prestigious Youth Match Racing World Championship, hosted by their home club. This time Wood came out on top with a 3-1 score.

Petersen had won the U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship for the Rose Cup with Wood in third position. Then, in a regatta important to both, Petersen won the 54th Governor’s Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship where Wood finished a disappointing fifth.

But this week, it was Wood on top in a surprisingly easy finals win, other than the first race. In that race, after Wood finally established a seemingly comfortable lead, the two boats approached the finish line with Wood heading towards the Committee Boat end of the finish line. The two boats gybed onto Starboard tack and Petersen’s maneuver was slightly better, and, with a slight puff, he surged past Wood to win at the pin end by a matter of inches.

Final placings
1. David Wood, USA
2. Jeffrey Petersen, USA
3. Riccardo Sepe, ITA
4. Emil Kjaer, DEN
5. Tom Foucher, FRA
6. Ansgar Jordan, USA
7. Marius Westerlind, SWE
8. Thimote Polet, FRA
9. Oscar Engstrom, SWE

Back in Black
Thundering into Cherbourg as the last light of a beautiful evening faded, the carbon marvel of Skorpios, setting enough sail to cover Wimbledon Centre Court several times over, eked and groaned its way to the finish of the Rolex Fastnet Race. What a sight.

Monohull line honours for the Monaco registered, Russian owned and Spanish skippered super-yacht heralded a new era of the mega-maxi and it’s no surprise to open the classifieds of this month’s Seahorse and see Rambler 88 very much up for sale and open to offers. The baton has passed. The Rambler trilogy attempt was trampled, steam-rollered by Nautor Swan’s finest vessel ever constructed to leave the super-maxi owners club in a quandary.

It’s a thumping statement win for Dimitry Rybolovlev, part owner of Monaco Football Club and the offshore Blue Riband events are all at his mercy now. If the Sydney-Hobart goes ahead, and I’m hearing that fingers are crossed for that on December 26th with the Covid situation down-under, then Skorpios is just about perfect for the Bass Strait. Wild Oats may well as be scrapped or converted for cruising or day trips around Hamilton Island. Rambler 88 may as well not bother. It’s a new dawn in offshore monohull racing, setting the highest bar and making the very apex of the game a place for committed billionaires only.

Grandmasters Team Race
Texas Corinthian Yacht Club Team: Clark Thompson (skipper, team captain), Jack Daniel, Mary Milby, Paul Thompson, Gary Ross (skipper), Ann Graham, Pierce Owens, Joel Scott, Gerard Coleman (skipper), George Francisco, Mike McCann, Chris Stacy. Click on image to enlarge.

Texas Corinthian Yacht Club Team The teams from Texas Corinthian Yacht Club in Kemah, Texas, and the host New York Yacht Club got their money's worth this weekend, racing head-to-head 10 times over the course of the three-day regatta.

Each race was a battle and after nine races, the scoreline had the host Club on five wins and the team from the little club in Texas on four. But, regardless of the results to that point, the outcome of the 10th race would be definitive. The championship for the 10th edition of the Grandmasters Regatta would go to whichever team won the 64th and final race of the weekend.

"They were ahead at the first mark and the second mark," said Clark Thompson, a skipper and team captain for Texas Corinthian Yacht Club."We were ahead at the third mark. Going up the last weather leg, it could’ve been either one of us and then right at the finish it all worked out. I’ll bet we were each ahead two to three times during the race, we just happened to have the lead at the end."

The win was a first, in seven tries, at the New York Yacht Club Grandmasters event for Texas Corinthian Yacht Club, though the team has been on a roll this year, winning the two other grandmasters events held in 2021, and as a result, also taking home the Peter Wilson Trophy, which rewards the outstanding team in grandmasters team racing in the United States during the course of the year. -- Stuart Streuli

44 Cup: Flat Out To The Finish
Few could have anticipated the intensity of how the final day played out.

More breeze was always on the cards with the forecast showing over 20+ knots. And this was precisely what the fleet got. Yet this time around the tide was with the wind most of the day making for flatter seas, which in turn meant that there were some superb high speed sleigh rides downhill.

The pace was now at full bore and when it came to mark roundings the pressure was on. Crash gybes, kite trawls and round ups delivered plenty of action at the bottom end of the course.

The day started with plenty of breeze and a forecast that said it would stay - It did. But, along with the tide direction which would be east for most of the day, that’s where the certainty stopped.

In the first race CEEREF powered by HRASTNIK 1860 smoked around the course to take the first win, leaving Aleph, who finished in fifth, to wonder where their points buffer had gone.

In the second, after some stressful moments deep in the fleet, it was Aleph who took the overall win by one point.

Strong Winds Prevent Racing on Opening Day of Dragon Gold Cup 2021 by Yanmar
Marstrand, Sweden - The opening day of the International Dragon Gold Cup 2021 by Yanmar in Marstrand, Sweden, brought glorious sunshine but very strong winds and big seas. The Race Committee put to sea to inspect conditions, but sadly the sea state was too severe so racing had to be abandoned for the day. Back ashore the committee confirmed that the schedule for day two will be revised to permit two races, instead of the scheduled one, with an earlier start time of 11:00.

The Dragon Gold Cup is steeped in history and is run to very specific and traditional rules. These include that racing will be run over a 12-mile windward leeward course - very long by today’s standards – and that there shall be only one race a day unless a race is missed, when a second race can be scheduled to catch up the schedule. The rules also state that the points from all races shall count in the overall standings with no discards allowed, meaning that consistency, great boat preparation and maintenance, attention to detail and the ability to play the long game are of vital importance to Gold Cup success. e served and the party will commence.

The forecast is for the wind to moderate overnight and the remainder of the week looks set to bring the champagne sailing conditions for which Marstrand is rightly famous. Championship racing will continue until Friday 20 August with a total of six races scheduled. The warning signal for the first of Monday's two races is set for 11:00 with the second race following on as soon as possible.

Back to basics for Sir Ben Ainslie
Sir Ben Ainslie made a guest appearance Saturday 14 August at the Buckler’s Hard 50th anniversary and redevelopment celebration regatta.

Ainslie, who was keen to embrace the spirit of the event, enjoyed a fun sail up the Beaulieu River in a Scow with the Hon Mary Montagu-Scott at the front end.

In sparkling sunshine and a light fluky breeze, they headed the fleet up the charming, winding river to Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour where celebrations began to mark the completion of the two-year/ £2m redevelopment project.

Following an afternoon of regatta fun, visitors and guests enjoyed a special awards ceremony hosted by Lord Montagu.

To mark the occasion Ainslie was presented with a certificate granting him the Honorary Freedom of Beaulieu River, while fellow special guest Sir Chay Blyth received his certificate for Honorary Freedom of Beaulieu River that was granted to him by Lord Montagu’s father at the original marina opening in 1971, almost 50 years to the day. -- Sue Pelling
