Gold Medals for Italy & Brazil and two for Great Britain
It was a sensational day of racing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Sailing Competition on the day that IOC President Thomas Bach experienced the sport for himself.

Brazil repeated Rio gold in the Women’s Skiff - 49erFX, Italy claimed Mixed Multihull - Nacra 17 gold, and Great Britain won gold medals in the Men’s Skiff - 49er and Men’s Heavyweight One Person Dinghy - Finn by the skinniest of margins.

Australia has also all but secured gold in the 470 Men a day before the Medal Race.

Women’s Skiff - 49erFX Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze (BRA) have won gold in the 49erFX with Tina Lutz and Susann Beucke (GER) taking silver and Annemiek Bekkering and Annette Duetz (NED) bronze.

Going into the 49erFX Medal Race two high-class teams shared top spot on equal points - the Dutch double World Champions up against the Brazilians looking to defend their Olympic title from five years ago. Only three points off the lead were Tina Lutz and Susann Beucke (GER).

Men’s Skiff - 49er Dylan Fletcher and Stu Bithell (GBR) won gold in the 49er with Pete Burling and Blair Tuke (NZL) taking silver and Erik Heil and Thomas Ploessel (GER) bronze.

In a photo finish Great Britain crossed the finish in first place, centimetres ahead of the fast-closing Germans. New Zealand crossed the line third so gold went to Fletcher and Bithell.

Burling and Tuke become the first sailors ever to have won Olympic medals and the America’s Cup in the same year. An added bonus for Fletcher and Bithell was to have won gold ahead of a team widely considered the best of their generation. “Pete and Blair are maybe the best team in the world, it has been great to race them and win here,” said Bithell, a 470 silver medallist from London 2012. -- Andy Rice - World Sailing

After an epic final Finn medal race, Giles Scott has won the gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Hungary’s Zsombor Berecz won the medal race to secure the silver while Spain’s Joan Cardona did just enough to hang on to the bronze. Despite one of the most stressful medal races ever, the top three remained the same. But it could have all been so very different…

Scott won the gold in possibly the hardest way imaginable. He mistakenly returned to the start thinking he was over, and restarted last, sailing the whole race playing catch up. For while it looked all over for him, but one thing we have learned about Scott is that it’s never over until it’s over. He doesn’t give up and often finds a way back.

It was perhaps the end of an era on Tuesday in Enoshima as while the medalists celebrated their achievement, it was tempered with the knowledge that there will be no more Finn racing at the Olympics. As the last boat crossed the finish line, the Finn class’s near 70-year era as the greatest and longest continuous Olympic class was over. Long live the Finn. -- Robert Deaves

On Wednesday 4 August, the final two Medal Races for Tokyo 2020 are scheduled: the Men’s and Women’s 470.

Cowes Week Daily Round Up Day 4
Sir Richard Matthews' new Oystercatcher XXXV. Photo by Ingrid Abery, www.ingridabery.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

Cowes Week Competitors today benefited from a relaxing morning ashore, in bright and warm sun, while waiting for a sea breeze to fill in. The general postponement signal came down at 1300, with the first starts getting underway from the Royal Yacht Squadron line in a predominately east-south-easterly breeze of 8-10 knots at 1400.

The J/70 class completed the final races of a hotly contested 12-race short series, in which 10 boats from the 34-strong fleet scored at least one podium result. Victory for Nick Philips' Chaotic in the final two races saw his team cement an overall win.

Today was also Women's Day, which celebrates the achievements of women in sailing and highlights role models. Solo round the world racing legend Pip Hare sailed on board the 45ft Scaramouche, crewed entirely by girls from the Greig City Academy in Inner London.

Louise Morton's Bullet took her first victory of the week in the Quarter Ton class and now jointly leads the class overall, tied on points with Julian Metherell's Bullit. "It was a short race, with only three marks, which was a good call," Louise said. "There was always going to be a transition [when the south-westerly sea breeze became dominant] which we managed well - it was a classic Cowes Week scenario." -- Rupert Holmes

Turboing Your Boat Is Exciting. Battcars Are Built for When You'd Like to Strategically, Immediately 'UnTurbo.'
Battcars Walking the docks at this summer's classic offshore events, we've noticed a lot of boats have come out of the sheds 'All Turbo'd Up.' It's impressive. And it started us thinking. For years Harken Battcar systems have been so low-friction, sailors reef without incident - for instance, blast reaching in a roll cloud squall. Think about doing that with the new monster fat-top main you added during the pandemic and being able to stay on the rum line with most everyone still on the rail rather than having to run off to reef.

Of course Battcars add a safety factor that can be critical. But reefing with Battcars is so smooth and manageable, they open the option to hold onto more sail area longer, knowing you can get it out of there before anything hits the fan. These days, our available Slug Track makes retrofitting your grooved spar with a Battcar system a realistic DIY project. Around Harken, we say there's no single rig change you can add that adds so much safety. This off-season, think of doing a strategic 'Unturbo' project.

Olympians Shine on Bay of Palma
Real Club Nautico de Palma, enjoyed a morning of celebration as their rising global star Joan Cadrona, 23, became the first club athlete to win an Olympic sailing medal. And in the afternoon on the Bay of Palma it was one of Spain’s most decorated Olympic heroes, Iker Martinez, who duly guided Andrea Masi’s Italian flagged ClubSwan 50 Ulika to the best aggregate of the day, a first and second from the 16 boat fleet which includes Olympic aces such as Jochen Schumann (ONEGroup) and Tom Slingsby (Earlybird) as well as America’s Cup and Round the World Race winners.

While Ulika moved up to fifth, a pair of third places today keeps the world champions, Marcus Brennecke’s Hatari, well clear at the top of the points table, even If the regatta format sees only the result from the qualifying series carry forward after tomorrow’s racing.

And just as Hatari extended their lead at the head of the Clubswan 50 fleet so did the Italian crew of G Spot in the ClubSwan 36. Giangiacomo Serena thanks to their 3,1 today.

The defending Copa del Rey champions have taken the lead in the ClubSwan 42 class. Natalia Brailou’s eponymous Natalia mirrored their Day 1 1,4 with a 4,1 today to lead now by two points.

The only boat with a perfect scoreline is Javier Banderas’ Swan 45 Teatro Soho Caixabank which has won four times in a row in BMW ORC 2 to lead by six points. In the Sotheby’s Women’s Cup there are only three points separating the top three teams, the Vigo crew of Patricia Suarez still leading.

Racing resumes tomorrow in the Bay of Palma at 1300hr (local time.)

Chay Blyth 50th anniversary celebrations
A parade of sail will take place up the Hamble River on Friday August 6 led by Sir Chay Blyth to mark the 50th anniversary of his victorious return to the UK at the end of a pioneering 292-day solo non-stop west-about circumnavigation against the prevailing winds and currents aboard his 59ft ketch rigged yacht British Steel. The yacht was equipped with only the most basic gear - no roller furling, self-tailing winches, GPS, nor Sat/phone - and during the voyage, communication with the outside world remained spasmodic at best. When the yacht’s primitive wind vane self-steering failed during a storm off Cape Horn, Chay was forced to hand steer for the remaining 20,000 miles - a remarkable achievement on its own!

On his return, Chay was given a right Royal welcome attended by the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles, Princess Anne and Prime Minister Edward Heath. Thousands more lined the waterfront, and the headlines ran: BOAT OF STEEL - MAN OF IRON. The Times newspaper described the voyage as ‘The most outstanding passage ever made by man alone.’ It took another 23 years for anyone to challenge the record - fellow British sailor Mike Golding in the British Steel Challenge yacht Group 4 Securitas in1994. To-date only five have completed the full west-about route.

Those with a yacht or motorboat are welcome to join the Parade of Sail, and the public will get a great view from the Hamble village waterfront, public car park and slipway, just as they did 50 years ago.

There are limited facilities for media to follow the Parade of Sail afloat, allocated to those who apply prior to the event. Film crews, photographers and journalists will also get an excellent view of proceedings from the Royal Southern Yacht Club balcony overlooking the pontoons and river.

UK National Swallow Championships
UK National Swallow Championships The National Swallow Championships were hosted by Itchenor Sailing Club over the weekend of 31/1st August with a covid-respectable fleet of 15 boats enjoying extremely competitive racing in Hayling Bay.

The Swallow is currently enjoying a bit of a renaissance with several previously resting boats back racing this year and, with many of the competitors being ex dinghy racers of note, the competition was as fierce as ever.

For race one the race officer Ian MacDonald Smith laid a windward/leeward course in a shifting 10 knot westerly and it was Osprey, (James Hartley, Rob Sutherland, and Miles Palmer) first out of the blocks with the win. Another ex Int14 Champion Jonathan Pudney in Spectre made an early showing but it was recent championship winner Marengo second in the end with Gwaihir (Mike Wigmore, Charles Hyatt, and Keith Bliss) third. In race two, after a general recall, the defending champion Skua (Harry Roome, Prue Roome, and Tim Barker) sailed a perfect first beat and windward mark layline and was never to be caught. In the last race of the day, it was a newcomer to the front of the championship fleet in recent years Svala, sailed by Nigel Masding, Hugo Fisher and Richard House, that secured the win. Osprey were second again, by now building a solid series score.

Four boats went into the last race with nine points, or ten and a race win, so it was all to play for. No double points required in this medal race to make it a nail biter. Svala judged the tidal cross for the spreader mark best and was gone for their second race win giving them second overall. Marengo and Gwaihir changed places for the rest of the race with Marengo taking it at the last mark to complete the podium.

Next year’s event will avoid the clash with Cowes Week and some local events so look forward to a fleet of 20 boats for that event. The great thing with a national class where most of the sailing is in one area is that the racing will be just as good next week, next month and next season.

Need Small Boat On this day in 1943, whilst serving as commander of the PT-109 torpedo boat during World War II, future US President John F. Kennedy and his crew were rammed by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri. Kennedy’s boat was instantly halved by the impact and two crew members were killed. Six days later, stranded in the Solomon Islands with his fellow survivors, Kennedy carved a desperate message into a coconut shell and handed it to Biuku Gasa and Eroni Kumana, two natives tasked with delivering it to the nearest Allied base 35 nautical miles away, by canoe. Amazingly, they succeeded, and as a result Kennedy and his men were soon rescued.

Kennedy later had the shell encased in plastic; it was then used as a paperweight in the Oval Office during his presidency. -- Shaun Usher, Letters of Note

Second auction likely in autumn with possible 25% discount

The first auction for the assets of bankrupt superyacht builder Perini Navi attracted no bidders. It appears that the required €62.5m base price plus €10m deposit was too high.
