Flying Dutchman with one hand on RS:X Windsurfer gold
There were tears of joy and anguish on the boat park on the fifth day of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Sailing Competition as Kiran Badloe (NED) put one hand on the Men’s Windsurfer - RS:X gold medal.

Ahead of the Men’s RS:X Medal Race on Saturday, Badloe has a significant advantage in the men’s fleet and in the women’s, the Chinese, British and French sailors are certain of a medal each.

It was another day of good breeze in Enoshima, not quite as strong as Big Wednesday but sufficient for the trapeze sailors to be fully stretched and planing downwind. Some sailors scored double wins in their races, while for others today was the moment when their hopes of a medal in Tokyo flickered away.

The top ten in the Men’s and Women’s Windsurfer - RS:X will enjoy a day of rest on Friday ahead of their Medal Races on Saturday 31 July.

Friday’s action will see the Men’s and Women’s One Person Dinghies conclude their Opening Series. The 49erFX return to action with the 49er fleet continuing and the Men’s and Women’s Two Person Dinghy will pick up where they left off. -- Andy Rice - World Sailing

Ramping Up For Cowes Week
Saturday 31st July sees the start of the 195th edition of Cowes Week, the world's longest running sailing regatta and, after a year away due to Covid, the Cowes Week Ltd (CWL) team are excited to see many regular competitors returning and to welcome newcomers to the event.

This year sees a number of changes as the CWL team work to ensure that 2021 is the best yet!

One of the biggest changes this year is there will be more starts and finishes from the Royal Yacht Squadron line, making for more exciting racing for competitors and spectators alike.

A completely new class to Cowes Week this year is the Club Cruiser Division who will have their own start. There will be a further three starts in the Performance Cruiser Division. A new trophy for the Club Cruiser Division is being sponsored by The Cruising Association.

A great addition for competitors this year are the MUSTO Morning Briefings at 09:30 each day with Regatta Director Laurence Mead and Meteorologist Fiona Campbell supported by members of the British Sailing Team and well-known sailors giving their insight into tactical plans for the day. The briefings wil be broadcast live and then be available to view via the website and the App.

New for this year are the daily prize givings which will take place on the Parade each day at 17:00. The prizes presented will be for the previous day's racing.

The new Cowes Week App is available to all, with competitors getting their own personal guide to the regatta, both ashore and afloat, including course data for the whole crew. A version of the App is also available to visitors to Cowes and to remote spectators bringing them closer to the action and keeping them up to date with all that is happenng at the Regatta. The Cowes Week App is also the place to go to watch all of the starts live, as they happen, from the Royal Yacht Squadron. Cowes Live is one of the most comprehensive presentations of sailing from any regatta in the world.

Opportunity Knocks for the IAKA Youth Team at Cowes Week
A new initiative to encourage youth sailors will be taking place at Cowes Week 31 July - 06 August. This has been made possible by the collaboration of the Ian Atkins Keelboat Award (IAKA), administered by the John Merricks Sailing Trust (JMST), the SB20 Class UK and SportsBoatWorld. Having won the selection event at the Royal Southern YC July Regatta, the newly established IAKA Youth Team will be competing in the SB20 Class at Cowes Week, offering youth sailors the opportunity to race at the world-famous annual regatta.

"The main aim of the IAKA is to encourage transition from dinghy racing to yacht/keelboat racing for as many young sailors as possible," commented Ian Atkins, who has enjoyed over 40 years of success, both working and racing in the marine industry. "Simon 'Fumesy' Russell was, until recently, the main man behind the SB20 Class, and also crewed for John Merricks and was closely involved in getting the SB20 class involved in the 2021 awards. Fumesy sadly passed away in January. The JMST, SportsBoatWorld and I, are delighted to see the award come to fruition."

The IAKA Youth Team will be skippered by Patrick Whelan (19) who is studying at the University of Manchester.

The IAKA Youth Team includes Patrick's sister Annabel Whelan (20) who was part of the British Keelboat Academy and is currently studying at Exeter University. Alex Hamel (18) is currently studying at Cardiff University and is a member of the British Youth Sailing Squad. She has raced in Optimist, Tera, Feva, Spitfire, Nacra 15 and won the Hobie Waves during the final of the 35th America's Cup. Gerard Cloke-Brown (20) is currently studying at the University of Manchester and has been sailing with skipper Patrick for six years in team racing events. Gerrard is also Treasurer of the university sailing club. -- Louay Habib

You cannot be serious! - Harken
Harken Challenge the engineers at Harken about just how light they plan to go with their next generation Air winch and you are in for a somewhat predictable response...

We're used to technology trickling down but sometimes it goes the other way. That's what happened with Harken Air winches, which have moved steadily upwards in terms of size and complexity through grand prix racing fleets over the last eight years, delivering performance gains and major weight savings with a brilliant piece of design - a super strong, featherweight, fully optimised structure with a big hole in the middle and a tiny gearbox on the inside rim, replacing a large, solid lump.

'The Air winch started as a small single-speed winch that we developed specifically for the 35th America's Cup in Bermuda,' says Harken's director of global of grand prix and custom yacht sales, Mark Wiss. 'They're still using it now in SailGP.'

Rockwool on the assault at the GC32 Lagos Cup 2
While the results once again might indicate that Ernesto Bertarelli's Alinghi team had it all their own way, topping the leaderboard after day one of racing at the GC32 Lagos Cup 2 here on Portugal's Algarve coast, this was far from the case.

The race management team under PRO Miguel Amaral (standing in for Stuart Childerley, who is on duty at the Olympic Games) was patient in keeping the international flying catamaran crews ashore in the Marina de Lagos. The boats were only called out at 1600 with the first race getting underway just after 1700 local time when the breeze had veered into the northwest and built to 12 knots. As the forecast had predicted, over the next two hours the wind built and by the time the boats were sent home after four races, of the five scheduled, the offshore breeze was gusting well into the 20s.

Tomorrow the wind is set to fill in more strongly and earlier, so it looks unlikely the 1300 start will be delayed.

New York Yacht Club's Trio of Team Race Regattas
Each August the New York Yacht Club hosts three team-race regattas on consecutive weekends: the New York Yacht Club Invitational Team Race Regatta for the Morgan Cup (July 30 to August 1), the New York Yacht Club Invitational Team Race Regatta for the Commodore George R. Hinman Masters Trophy (August 6 to 8) and the New York Yacht Club Grandmasters Team Race Regatta (August 13 to 15). Each event utilizes the Club's fleet of 22 Sonars (designed by member Bruce Kirby, who passed away last week). The latter two have age minimums for skippers and crew to encourage team racing as a life-long pursuit. Founded in 2003, 2000 and 2010, respectively, the three regattas are among the most competitive adult team-racing competitions in the world, annually attracting top sailors from across the country and abroad.

As the only event without any restrictions on the age or affiliation of the sailors for each team, the Morgan Cup is the most competitive of the bunch. While there won't be any international teams this year, the entry list does include three squads traveling in from California and teams composed of some of the best sailors from the Northeast, including numerous current and former college sailing stars as well as former Olympians and America's Cup competitors.

Newport Harbor Yacht Club is a former winner of the Morgan Cup, in 2014. Bissell, who served as the team captain that year, says the team can sometimes be slow out of the gate.

The Morgan Cup will start Friday morning, with sailing taking place on Narragansett Bay between Rose Island and Goat Island through Sunday. The Hinman Masters and Grandmasters events will follow a similar pattern. -- Stuart Streuli

Sailing World on Water: July 30.21
This is the scariest footage we have seen in our 13 years at the World on Water. Featured on Sailing Illustrated last week, it clearly shows how close it was to being a life ending moment for the skipper of a yacht on the starting line, as the starting alert device was pointed along the line at the boats, not in the air away from the action.

We can report that the skipper is OK.

The Chicago to Mackinac freshwater race was on last week and over 240 boats started. The First to finish just before midnight Chicago time, on Sunday July 18, was Eagle One, with Timothy LaRiviere of Grosse Pointe Michigan, at the helm.

In the Transpac the finish was a close one with Roy Disney's Volvo 70 Pyewacket, cresting the line first after roaring past the whole fleet. They set a new daily distance record of 506.4 miles, at an average of 21.1 knots of speed in the process.

Why We Need To Redesign Sailing
Independent yachting journalist and DAME Award Jury member, Elaine Bunting, argues our industry should create highly accessible wind-powered craft for a new generation of participants by harnessing the best of advancing boat and equipment design in the marine industry while choosing which traditions to keep or ignore.

Elaine Bunting has been perfectly placed throughout her career to experience the onward progress of boat equipment, yachting and communication technologies in the leisure marine industry. From working as a sailing instructor and world-girdling Ocean Yachtmaster, to more than 30 years reporting on headline yacht racing and cruising events and serving as editor in chief of the UK's most iconic boating magazines.

Our conversation starts by reflecting on the year-by-year improvements in the capability of products submitted to the DAME Award and what that means from a user perspective. "People have very high expectations of comfort and efficiency afloat now," Elaine responds. "This is driving innovation and development, but that often comes with a new layer of complexity. In some cases, we are asking amateur sailors to take on the equivalent of a professional skipper's role in terms of the understanding, learning, and training demanded by using that kind of kit.
