Big Wave Wednesday
Enoshima is famous, notorious even, for its big wave action, and that's what the sailors got on day four of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Sailing Competition.

Eight out of ten fleets were racing on Wednesday, with only the Laser and Laser Radial having a rest day. Some sailors put down some big markers with dominant performances in the 470 Women and Nacra 17.

In the Men's and Women's Skiff events, both halves of an engaged couple are sharing the limelight in their respective boats, Dylan Fletcher (GBR) taking the lead in the 49er and his fiancée Charlotte Dobson (GBR) maintaining top spot in the 49erFX.

Alongside the big waves across Sagami Bay, the sailors thrived in 14-17 knots of consistent south westerly breeze that gave them a stern test.

The 49erFX are the only fleet who will enjoy a rest day on Thursday with the 49er scheduled for two races to catch up on those lost during Tuesday's action. Racing will start at 12:00 JST and every fleet will start to enter the business end of the competition with races now coming thick and fast.

Giles Scott bounces back on Day 2 for Finns at Tokyo 2020
Giles Scott, the British defending Olympic champion from Britain, won both races on the second day of competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, following a lacklustre performance on the opening day left him in ninth place. The top three overall remain the same, with Turkey's Alican Kaynar still leading from Hungary's Zsombor Berecz and Spain's Joan Cardona.

Cardona had the best day out of the top three with a 5,3, while Kaynar struggled with a 6, 13 and Berecz was just satisfied with a 9,4. However, Scott's two race wins moves him up to fourth, and just three points off the top spot.

The second day of the Finn competition delivered superb conditions on Sagami Bay and two spectacular races for the Finn fleet on the offshore Zushi course area. The forecast delivered as expected with 15-18 knots onshore wind and generally sunny conditions, and not a typhoon in sight.

With a building wind during the day and a growing sea state, the fleet had two fantastic races. The left side proved favoured most of the day and those who could dominate their lanes to the left generally came out ahead.

On Thursday the Finns move to the further back to the inshore Enoshima course area, with two more races starting from 14.30 local time. -- Robert Deaves

A career without end - Y Yachts
Y Yachts Michael Schmidt has won ocean races, closed big brokerage deals, launched the successful Hanse Yachts brand and now he has created a new range of large yachts as esoteric as they are captivating

Pioneering carbon raceboat builder, international yachtbroker, Admiral's Cup-winning skipper and helmsman, creator of the Hanse Yachts brand and now founding director of the award-winning YYachts shipyard… Michael Schmidt is one of the sailing world's great all-rounders with several careers' worth of experience packed into his five decades at the cutting edge of marine industry innovation. But why on earth did he go back to the hard graft of establishing a new shipyard when he could be enjoying a well-earned and comfortable retirement?

'Well, a few things came together,' he says. 'If like me you have sailed all your life, virtually since birth and then built thousands of sailing yachts, you have a certain wealth of experience. You have an idea of how a yacht should sail, what a good interior should look like and how the technology should work.

All in for 2021 Transpac
With the finish yesterday just before sunset of Mark Ashmore's Cal 40 Nalu V, all entered yachts are accounted for in this 51st edition of the Transpac. Ashmore and wife Kathleen, Chris Tadlock and navigator Hugh Westermeyer did not have the fastest ride to Hawaii, having broken their spinnaker a few days ago and sailing the remainder of the race with a poled-out headsail. For this they do earn the Tail End Charlie Award, but they also achieved a more important mission for their team in this race.

Nalu V did receive the First Cal 40 to Finish award from TPYC Commodore Jim Eddy (a Cal 40 owner too), being the only one in the fleet this year. However, in two years in the next race Nalu will no doubt have more rivals as these classic yachts perennially participate in this race that helped make them famous.

This was a year of challenges for Transpac: the COVID pandemic put tremendous uncertainty into every phase of planning for participants, organizers and sponsors alike. Yet in the end it was Mother Nature who emerged as the star of the show this year: mostly strong steady winds that propelled the 40 teams who started out in San Pedro last week down the rhumb line to some of the fastest times seen yet in this race. One broken mast just after the start and a broken rudder in the Molokai Channel were the only serious damage incidents, and no serious injuries or health issues that were not resolvable on the trip.

And of course the outstanding Hawaiian hospitality of Transpac 51– tempered a little by COVID concerns – was enjoyed by all and delivered by an outstanding group of hosts in this "Year of the Volunteer."

5o5 Worlds 2021 Cancelled
Michael Quirk, President of the International 5o5 Class Association, announces that the 2021 World Championships scheduled to be held in Bermuda at the end of October, has been cancelled.

Concern over travel issues that competitors may have due to Covid 19 quarantines and the impact of the pandemic on shipping costs led to the decision. While Bermuda is faring well with only a small number of active cases, no hospitalizations and approximately 75% of the adult population vaccinated, competitors from the Antipodes cannot readily travel and return to their homes. Restrictions and quarantine problems between European countries and concern over potential quarantine requirements from contact tracing led to the view that cancellation was prudent.

The Association thanks the Bermuda Tourism Authority, Goslings Rum, the City of Hamilton and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club for all their efforts in attempting to host 5o5 sailors from around the world.

The Class looks forward to holding its 2022 World Championships in Cork Ireland August 3 – 13th 2022 .

A superb film for lockdown...
With About 17 Of Australia's 26 Million People Confined To Their Homes, SWS Suggests A Few Activities. The full version of this 2012 documentary/recreation is freely available on Youtube

The story of Ernest Shackleton's ill-fated 1914 bid to cross Antarctic is one of the most extreme survival epics of the 20th century. All the more so because Shackleton took Frank Hurley, a superlative photographer and film-maker who captured most of the misadventure on film. That appeared in 1919 - and is simply called "South".

There have been many documentaries about the expedition which became a peerless small boat saga after Shackleton's ship the ENDURANCE broke up in the ice. The 28 crew took three lifeboats lived on pack ice until they could reach Elephant Island after which one boat was recaulked and decked to sail with six men 800nm to South Georgia for help.

Shackleton's Captain uses Hurley's original footage and embellishes it with a cast of modern actors, experts and graphics to explain how important Frank Worsley, the Endurance's captain was to the expedition, both as a navigator and experienced sailor, especially of small boats. Worsley's diaries bring in-depth detail to the day to day business of survival after the ship was stuck in the ice and the extraordinary voyage to South Georgia in the 22ft 6in JAMES CAIRD, a triumph of seamanship. I'm a little bit sceptical as to whether the technique of combining interviews, original footage and not very convincing recreations of the action really works, but the majesty of the story itself is enough to make this film worthy of your attention.

GC32 crews braced for big breeze Lagos
A sensational four days of flying catamaran racing lies in store for the GC32 fleet as the second event of the 2021 GC32 Racing Tour season starts tomorrow (Thursday) in Lagos on Portugal's Algarve coast. The forecast is for winds into the high teens on Thursday-Friday, into the early 20s on Saturday before dropping fractionally for Sunday's final races. These are northwesterlies, blowing offshore, which means gusts, but flat water – perfect for maximum speed GC32 sailing, while testing teams to their limits.

Ernesto Bertarelli's defending GC32 World Champions on Alinghi remain the firm favourites after their victory here earlier this month, but the level is rising everywhere. Christian Zuerrer's Black Star Sailing Team is looking to topple their Swiss compatriots. Another to watch is Red Bull Sailing Team with Australian 49er Olympic gold medallist turned America's Cup and SailGP skipper Nathan Outteridge standing in for Roman Hagara, who is away in Japan with the Olympics.

Racing gets underway tomorrow at 1300 local time.

Entries are open for the 30th edition of the DAME Awards, due to be presented at this year's METSTRADE.

Participation is open to manufacturers and authorised suppliers who are registered as exhibitors or co-exhibitors at the in-person METSTRADE 2021 show that will take place at RAI Amsterdam.

This year it is hoped the awards ceremony will return to its usual format, with entries judged across seven categories before an eventual winner is chosen by a Jury comprising leading boat, interior and industrial designers, as well as user experts.

The assessment criteria will focus on the product design, from styling, functionality and innovation, through to integration, practicality of use, price to performance and presentation.

In addition, this year, entrants will be asked to submit information on the lifecycle impacts of their products, and the jury at its discretion will award a special Environmental Design Winner certificate to a product that represents the best example among all entries that fits the DAME criteria in an 'impressively sustainable way'.

DAME nominated products will form a special presentation within METSTRADE.

The registration fee to enter the awards is €150 per product which is donated to charity – this year the Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE) that works to restore the ocean to health by creating marine reserves, developing models of sustainable fishing and restoring marine habitats.

Entries close on 17 September 2021.

The second edition of the largest exhibition of vessels on the water in Poland - POLBOAT Yachting Festival - proved a hit over its four day run from July 15

The four day Polish Yachting Festival, which concluded on July 18, has been billed a huge success by those registered visitors with appointments allowed to attend (approx 2,000), to see more than 70 boats on the water, from leading Polish and other international brands. One highlight was the Sunreef 80 Double Happiness catamaran from Polish builder Sunreef Yachts, that played host to an opening ceremony that featured a number of key figures in the Polish boat industry and local region including marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, Mieczysław Struk; President of Gdynia, Wojciech Szczurek; Vice President of Gdynia, Marek Łucyk, President of the Polish Sailing Association, Tomasz Chamera; President of Dalmor SA, Aleksandra Mietlicka; and President of POLBOAT Sebastian Nietupski.

The exhibition also featured key international brands, many of which are produced in Poland. The Dobre Jachty company, whose stand resembled something more akin to being found at the Cannes Yachting Festival, creating an elegant space encouraging visits to the Jeanneau and Cranchi brands it represents. Saxdor, Hanse, Bavaria, Windy, Flipper Uttern and SeaDoo scooters, also proved a key pull for visitors.

This year, Gdynia had an opportunity to watch as many as seven Polish premieres including the Galeon 325 GTO, Maxus 34, Saxdor 320, Nimbus T8, Flipper 900 DC, Cranchi T36 Crossover and the Wave 50 catamaran.

On the first day of the fair,Gdynia POLBOAT Awards were presented to the Maxus 34 from the Northman shipyard in the sailboat category, while the Galeon 325 GTO from Galeon Yachts picked up the honours in the motoryacht category. Additionally, the jury awarded a special prize to the Modern 1 houseboat from the La Mare shipyard in Bydgoszcz.
