Rolex Fastnet Race: French are pace setters in IRC One
IRC One will be one of the toughest battlegrounds within the Rolex Fastnet Race, and the French will be a hard act to beat. Among the leading contenders are Jacques Pelletier's Milon 41 L'Ange De Milon which won IRC One in the 2019 edition. Runner-up to Pelletier in 2019 was outright race winner in 2017, Didier Gaudoux's JND39, Lann Ael 2. Gaudoux is returning with the same boat and much of the same victorious crew, who will be part family and part offshore experts such as Figaro veteran Fred Duthil.

There have been few indicators of offshore form over the past 18 months but Lann Ael 2 did win the IRC division in the 2020 edition of the Drheam Cup, ahead of Eric Fries' JPK 11.80 Fastwave 6 and Laurent Charmy's J/111 SL Energies Groupe Fastwave, both of whom will be competing in the Rolex Fastnet Race in IRC Two.

Philippe Frantz always puts a good campaign together with his NMD 43 Albator. Launched in 2017, Albator was immediately fast out of the shed, with class wins in the RORC Caribbean 600 and the Rolex Middle Sea Race, where she also finished third overall. This will be Frantz's second attempt at the Rolex Fastnet Race, with a crew from a variety of high-level offshore backgrounds.

From the same designers as Albator, Phosphorus II is a one-off Archambault 13. Formerly Teasing Machine when successfully campaigned by Eric de Turckheim, Mark Emerson bought the boat in 2017 and has continued to prove the A13's pedigree. In 2019 the crew campaigned on the RORC offshore circuit extensively, scoring two class wins, one overall win, plus multiple other podiums and were second overall for the season in IRC One and fourth in IRC overall.

Sailboats with foils: the evolution seen by Sirena, Soldini and Pedote
The Global Solo Challenge website cites authoritative voices of sailing in explaining the evolution of sailboats with foils. Max Sirena of Luna Rossa, Giovanni Soldini of Maserati and Giancarlo Pedote of Prysmian Ocean Racing - IMOCA class.

Max Sirena's point of view on sailing boats with foils - America's Cup
"I believe they are the present and the future of world sailing. It is part of a development and research process, which will lead more and more sailboats to use foils. Performance and speed at a certain level are the maximum expression of design that you can find today. Everyone wants to go faster and faster, there are ocean speed records to beat. Compared to boats of the past, today certainly a well done project that uses foils is definitely faster than a displacement boat.

Giovanni Soldini - Ocean multihulls
"Everyone has to live within his time and whatever is considered modern at that time. I am fortunate to have experienced a great evolution, I did my first circumnavigation still using SSB radios and the radio amateur Pierluigi from Ravenna who called me once a week. Now that we have ADSL on board the trimaran, and boats too, they developed and took their different paths.

The modern IMOCAs seem like crazy boats to me, even the new, flying mini transats, Verdier has designed one for the Pogo that will be standard, with these T-foils they are impressive, it is a revolution. An account with a multihull, a navigator is more used to being an airplane, while on a monohull it is really crazy. "

"The advantages are that the boat is faster and the distances get shorter. There are disadvantages in light winds because with all these appendages you have in the water they slow you down. If there is not enough wind to make you fly, you are slowed. With 3 knots you take a Moth and a Laser and the Laser with turn around the Moth that can't even sail. In long crossings we do for records the impact with the waves is reduced. It is less than traditional boats, as long as the wave doesn't get too high and doesn't make you fly.

Giancarlo Pedote of Prysmian Ocean Racing - IMOCA class
"I felt privileged to experience the introduction of foils in displacement boats, I wonder if such an important revolution will have followed in sailing. That is, we left the principles of Archimedes to make a boat fly. So something very important from a historical point of view. I am not sure it can be repeated from a qualitative leap point of view. Technology will continue to develop many things. But, as airplanes have changed the transport when they were invented, foils will significantly change the way of navigating .

Dubarry Aquatech Range
Dubarry Aquatech Range Sailing makes a lot of demands on a pair of shorts. Dubarry's new Aquatech range includes three styles of shorts that are up to the job, with useful features built in.

You want full freedom of movement with a bit of stretch, and hard-wearing yet lightweight fabric with full UV protection and water-repellent properties, which also dries fast when it does get wet.

A protective seat panel is important because, let's face it, sailing involves quite a lot of shuffling your backside across rough, grippy surfaces. Another key feature is a comfortable, contoured non-slip waist with a high back and a precisely adjustable fit, so the shorts stay put when you're wrangling a sail on the foredeck and can't let go of it to hitch them back up.

Pockets are also important: ones you can open easily with one hand while hanging onto the boat with the other, and easy to close securely, so your multitool knife and mobile phone won't go for an unscheduled swim. And wouldn't it be handy when you're on the helm to have an eyewear cleaning cloth on a bungee cord in one of the pockets, to wipe the salt spray off your shades?

Dubarry's Aquatech shorts deliver all of the above in several men's and women's styles: Imperia for high-octane sailing, and smart, classic Cyprus and Minorca crew shorts for all-round sailing use. For ladies there's also the elegant Corsica skort with stretchy technical shorts built in.

IOC President discusses preparations for Tokyo 2020 with Japanese Prime Minister
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach has expressed his "respect and gratitude" to the Government and people of Japan in a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister SUGA Yoshihide to discuss the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

With the Games nine days away on 23 July, the meeting was also attended by Tokyo 2020 President Hashimoto Seiko.

The IOC was informed by the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee about the 8,000+ people involved in the Games who travelled to Japan between 1 and 13 July. All were subject to the Tokyo 2020 screening testing regime, and all underwent pre-departure tests and health checks. Only three tested positive for COVID-19 after arrival and were immediately isolated, while the close contacts have been subject to the relevant quarantine measures.

"These Games will be followed by billions of people around the globe," said Bach. "They will admire what the Japanese people have achieved under these difficult circumstances. The Games will unite the world in all our diversity. They will show that we are stronger together in all our solidarity."

From Sunday 3 until Saturday 9 October, Saint-Tropez port will be exclusively reserved for a fleet of around 50 modern giants for the second part: Les Voiles Maxi Yachts.

World record attempt - solo and unassisted record sail around Antarctica

Lisa Blair Not satisfied with three world records, Australia's own Lisa Blair is once again heading off to better Fedor Konyukhov's 2008 solo and unassisted record sail around Antarctica of 102 days 56 minutes. The solo adventurer is due to depart Albany in Western Australia mid-December 2021.

As well as achieving the major goal, Lisa has another globally important aim - to conduct important citizen science for the Clean Ocean Foundation and other scientific organisations as part of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science.

To raise enough funds to re-fit her boat Climate Action Now and hire scientific equipment, the Aussie trailblazer and role model has come up with a novel sponsorship opportunity; individuals, businesses, yacht brokers, suppliers and clubs can buy one degree of her 360-degree circumnavigation of Antarctica.

Each degree sponsor will receive a tax deduction and a bundle of gifts as thanks, including a signed copy of her book Facing Fear, certificate and framed photo of her trusty Hick-designed 50-foot yacht, plus a call out to the relevant degree sponsor on Lisa's communications channels when she traverses the sponsored degree during her record attempt. View the full sponsorship package here.

Plus, one lucky early bird sponsor will be drawn on August 31, 2021, and upgraded to a sponsorship package worth $40,000, including sail signage, a corporate sail with Lisa on Climate Action Now and a personal appearance by Lisa at the sponsor's chosen function as a professional guest speaker.

Lisa is due to depart Albany mid-December to sail between the latitudes of 45 and 60 south, deep in the Southern Ocean, for 90-100 days.

Lisa's first Antarctic record attempt back in 2017 was thwarted when her mast crashed down in atrocious conditions 72 days into her quest. The mishap forced a detour and a two-month stopover in Cape Town to source and fit a new mast to complete the journey, which Lisa did, arriving to an extraordinary fanfare in Albany in July 2017 after 103 days at sea.

Buenos Aires, Argentina (14 July 2021) - Manuel Pardi recently returned to his home port of Buenos Aires after a three-month 4,000-mile voyage in Pequod, a restored 28-ft steel-hull sailboat, to the continent of Antarctica.

And he did it sustainably with no fossil-fueled engine or generator on board.

Instead, the boat was equipped with a Torqeedo all-electric auxiliary propulsion system, which was recharged by solar and wind energy underway.

Actually, this was Pequod's second trip to Antarctica. The first was undertaken in 1987 by the sailboat's original builder and owner Hernan Alvarez Forn. When Pardi started to plan his own voyage to the icy continent, he discovered Pequod abandoned and in a bad state of decay. He befriended Forn and together the two of them, with Francisco Gigena, an old traditional boatbuilder, worked to rebuild Pequod and make her seaworthy again.

Unfortunately, Forn died in November 2020 at the age of 94, just a couple of months before Pardi was due to set out on the voyage to Antarctica.

From the outset, Pardi wanted a boat that would be ecologically friendly and self-sustaining. "I wanted to get to the most pristine place on the planet without polluting," he said. "My goal was to go to Antarctica generating zero carbon emissions."

BoatLife is privately owned by Richard Dove; the team also includes Dan Taylor and Hayley Harris who have both worked in the marine industry for a number of years.

It is being organised partly in response to the desire from boat dealers who have previously requested a show in the Midlands.

The show is scheduled to take place from 17 - 20 February 2022.

The new Ventimiglia, Italy-based Cala del Forte marina, operated by Ports of Monaco, was officially inaugurated last Friday. The marina has been developed to provide additional berths to serve the growing need for capacity in addition to Monaco's two main berthing areas.

The official inauguration ceremony included a number of opening institutional speeches followed by the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the blessing by the Italian and Monegasque religious bodies and the performance of both national anthems. The event was organised in full compliance with all anti-pandemic health and safety guidelines, which included a strictly limited guest list.

Cala del Forte marina, located just 7.9Nm from Monaco, provides 178 berths up to 70m and a small shipyard facility. The marina has the longest concession in the Mediterranean, up to 2094. The facility serves as a destination in that, apart from the berths, it has a 15,000m² promenade with gardens and some 39 shops. A fast catamaran shuttle service is run to and from Monaco
