AEGEAN 600: Speeding up at the halfway mark
In the last 24 hours, the Meltemi has finally arrived on the AEGEAN 600 race course to speed up all members of the fleet as they reach towards and pass through the halfway point in the race. This halfway point is at the famous ancient port city of Rhodes in the race’s 605-mile tour of the southern Aegean. In contrast, the second half of the race is a more complex series of shorter legs that winds through the islands to the north of Rhodes and lie just to the west of the Turkish coast, with a final long leg heading due West towards the finish line at Cape Sounio.

Leading the pack is Carlo Alessandro and Puri Egri’s Atalanta II from Italy, led by America’s Cup skipper Francesco De Angelis and an all-star team. Once they broke through into the northwesterly Meltemi breeze, the Farr/Felci 70-footer has speeding quickly across the course, and at 21:00 local time have passed Kos and are 174 miles from the finish. With the brisk Meltemi predicted to hold all night and into tomorrow, Atalanta II could be high-speed reaching for most of the rest of the race and finishing by lunchtime or even earlier tomorrow.

The corrected time leaders in IRC and ORC scoring have now made their way past Rhodes and even though they are once again sailing upwind, they will be keen to get as far west as possible to avoid a light air zone predicted to be surrounding Rhodes later tonight and tomorrow. Vitaly Chukanov’s Russian team on his Oyster 46 Essex Girl has a big 7-hour lead in IRC scoring corrected time, while Peter Gustafson’s mostly Swedish team on his J/111 Blur has a narrower 2-hour lead in ORC scoring.

For the remainder of the fleet, tonight’s fight will be to enjoy the fast port-tack reaching getting past Kassos and Karpathos and to get around Rhodes before the wind goes light again on that corner of the course early tomorrow.

Transpac 51: One week countdown to Start One
Los Angeles, California: After a long winter and spring that made planning even more difficult due to Covid uncertainty, the fleet for this year’s Transpacific Yacht Race (aka, the Transpac) is at last in their final days of preparation. This biennial ocean racing classic organized by the Transpacific YC is in its 51st edition of offering high seas adventure for 2225 miles from the start off Point Fermin in Los Angeles to the finish line off Diamond Head in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Just as in past years, TPYC is staggering the start dates in an effort to compress the fleet’s finish times, with the slower entries setting off on Tuesday July 13th, faster entries on Friday July 16th and the fastest entries starting on Saturday July 17th. At 1300 PDT on each date all divisions on that day will start together on a line set 1 mile south off Point Fermin, with the next mark of the course being to leave the West End of Catalina island to port, then proceed to the finish at Diamond Head.

Seven entries in Division 8 will be the first teams setting off to Hawaii in one week: they range in size from Andy Schwenk’s Express 37 Spindrift from Richmond, CA to Cecil and Alyson Rossi’s Farr 57 Ho’okolohe from Novato, CA. For each race TPYC divides the fleet into divisions of similar size, speed and type, and this year they vary in size from the 7 entries in Divisions 5 and 8, to only 3 entries in Division 7. A total of 41 monohull entries will start the race next week.

Harken Reflex: a Potent Weapon for Short-Handed Racing
Harken Reflex It’s among the most significant growth trends in our sport for a reason; short-handed sailing makes every individual crewmember decision essential. There’s nowhere to hide. Every maneuver becomes a critical opportunity to save energy and gain miles.

Harken Reflex was expressly designed for short-handed sailing. Multiple races of Torlon™ bearings in the lower drive unit team up with stainless steel needle bearings in the ultra-compact upper unit to make manual A-sail furling as smooth and easy as can be achieved.

Reflex furls A-sails easily and completely every time. No wonder sailors are coming to Harken dealers every day with requests to retrofit existing sails or to team Reflex with cable-free code zeros. So Harken has introduced additional Reflex accessories to make reliable furling possible for more sails and more applications. With Reflex on the sprit, you’ve got the competition right where you want them! Want to know more? Ask your Harken Dealer about RELEX for short-handed sailing.

Monaco drives green propulsion revolution
Monaco Energy Boat Challenge Eight years on and the annual Monaco Energy Boat Challenge has established itself as the big meeting for alternative greener propulsion systems, from electricity to solar via hydrogen, all of which take centre stage at the 8th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge that kicks off today till 10 July, organised by Yacht Club de Monaco.

For the 32 teams (includes 22 universities, 17 nationalities) across 3 classes, there are plenty of opportunities to put their entries through their paces on the open sea which is what makes this event unique. Sea trials, speed record, fleet race, 16nm Monaco-Ventimiglia-Monaco race, endurance course, manoeuvrability challenge and a slalom course await contestants coming mainly from Europe and United Arab Emirates, while teams from China, Peru, South Africa and Indonesia, unable to attend in-person due to travel restrictions, will present their projects at the daily Tech Talks.

With 16 teams for the 4th year since the Energy Class was introduced, contestants are required to use a given amount of energy to optimise performance of their one design catamaran hull supplied by YCM and can use any alternative energy source. The Solar Class, in at the launch of this event in 2014, is for boats powered only by the sun, while the Open Sea Class is for boats already on the market or about to enter it for which this event is an excellent chance to demonstrate how they perform on the sea.

Alongside is a full-day conference (8 July), ‘Energy transition, alternative solutions, sustainable thinking and initiatives in the yachting industry’, with experts in-person and remotely here to debate progress on a range of aspects from bio-composite development to sustainable initiatives and design and build efficiencies. Plus an exhibition for start-ups promoting approaches that include biomimetic electric propulsion, an innovative hull that adapts to sea conditions to minimise drag, a 12-people tender powered by an hydrogen-electric hybrid system, and a solar catamaran that produces its own renewable energy onboard and stores it in the form of green hydrogen.

The event is supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and International Powerboating Federation, with long-term partners Iqos and Credit Suisse joined by BMW and YPI (Yachting Partners International).

Trophee Bailli de Suffren, supported by Yachting Malta, the only international classic yacht race has now reached half time.

After completing the first leg from St. Tropez to Bonifacio (Corsica) and the second leg from Bonifacio to Trapani (Sicily) the yachts are now on their way to Mġarr (Gozo) before completing the course at the Royal Malta Yacht Club. RoundItaly Genova-Trieste is born
2021 sees the inauguration of the longest non-stop regatta of the Mediterranean: 1,130 miles of sailing along the Italian coasts, with a single and spectacular obligatory passage in the strait of Messina.

The event, organized by the two yacht clubs and in partnership with Confindustria Nautica in its capacity as organizer of the 61st Salone Nautico di Genova, will unite, with a spectacular regatta, the two capitals of Italian sailing, national harbours, in their love for the sea at a moment of maximum visibility: RoundItaly Genova-Trieste will start on September 16th 2021 - the day of the inauguration of the Salone Nautico - from Genova and will arrive in Trieste during the days of the Barcolana, along the same finishing line of the largest sailing race in the world, in front of Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia. The timing of the first to arrive will be considered the new sailing record of the Genova-Trieste route, which ideally will also unite the shipyards of the navalmeccanico Group of the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic shores.

The regatta has the support of the Federazione Italiana Vela. “Over 1,100 miles around the wonders of Italy seen from the sea, the best of Offshore sailing in the Mediterranean - claims the chairman of the FIV, Francesco Ettore - and in particular the synergic union of two sea capitals and those institutions deeply engaged in the promotion of sailing culture. From the Salone Nautico to the Barcolana: in between there are all the seas of Italy and the thrills they provide. The FIV is delighted to support initiatives that aim to popularize offshore navigation. A great opportunity for Italian sailors”.

Registrations will open soon, and there is a series of Class40 yachtsmen who have already confirmed their interest.

23rd Match Race Germany will take place in 2022
The 23rd Match Race Germany will take place on its regular date over Whitsun. The upcoming edition of the German Match Race Grand Prix will be sailed and celebrated from 2nd to 6th June in 2022. 25 years after its premiere in 1997, the match race stage on lake Constance will once again sail into the international spotlight, attracting tens of thousands visitors to the heartbeat chamber in Langenargen’s famous Gondola Harbour and to the sourrounding shores.

The event, which was originally planned for this autumn, has become impossible due to the current pandemic situation and the restrictions still to be expected in September.

The postponement of the 23rd Match Race Germany does bring the favourite date over Pentecost back into play for next year. Then, in the 25th year of the history of Match Race Germany, whose premiere in 1997 marks the roots of the success story of the leading German dueling sailing summit, the comeback should be perfectly possible in early summer of 2022.

The leading World Tour had to be held in a reduced size during the pandemic but did not lose any if its power and determination and now heads towards its final in December (15th - 19th) in China which will be contested in Fareast 28R yachts. Match Race Germany will again be a World Tour Event next year.
