GC32 Lagos Cup 1 - Black Star level with Red Bull
Four challenging races on day one of the GC32 Lagos Cup 1 brought sailors back to the marina with happy, smiling faces. OK, so a lack of wind on the Algarve coast meant racing was pushed back by a few hours. But what's a few hours after you've been waiting 18 long months for racing to resume!

Christian Zuerrer's Black Star Sailing Team have been putting in the training while racing has been off the agenda, and it's clearly been time well spent with the Swiss crew sitting on equal points with second-placed Red Bull Sailing Team from Austria.

This was Team Rockwool Racing's first competitive outing in the GC32, a demanding lady for even those that know her well. Danish skipper Nicolai Sehested was satisfied with his day, especially with a 3rd place in Race 3. "It's been a fun day," said the 31-year-old. "No doubt there's a lot for us to learn, and always the first event means a big learning curve, but we were mixing it up in some of the races, and definitely going the right way."

Five races are planned for Friday, with the regatta concluding on Sunday 4 July in beautiful, sun-kissed Lagos.

Results after day 1
1. Alinghi, 6 points
2. Red Bull Sailing Team , 11
3. Black Star Sailing Team, 11
4. Zoulou, 16
5. Team Rockwool Racing, 18
6. Swiss Foiling Academy, 22

44Cup Marstrand
The 44Cup Marstrand had a tricky start today off the Swedish paradise island bearing its name. A weather front slowly moving across the west coast of Sweden brought with it solid 25 knots winds, 30+ gusts and the real prospect of no racing for the eight owner-driver RC44s. However mid-afternoon, as the front's torrential rain arrived, so the wind dropped and PRO Maria Torrijo was able to coax the teams and their high performance one designs out on the water.

Ultimately just one race was held before the wind became too unstable, but crews and race committee alike were pleased to have salvaged one race on what could easily have been a no race day.

In the singleton race, held in a 12 knot northerly, Chris Bake and Team Aqua came out on top. The race was up and down for Vladimir Prosikhin's Team Nika, but turned out well finishing second.

Equally strong out of the blocks today was the event's host Torbjorn Tornqvist, whose Artemis Racing held second place most of the way around only to be displaced by Team Nika just short of the finish line. The Swedish team appeared transformed today compared to Portorož.

Conditions are forecast to be lighter and sunny Friday when the race committee will attempt to hold three races.

GAC Pindar supports all-female sailing team in GKSS Match Cup Marstrand
GAC Pindar, as part of GAC UK, is supporting an all-female sailing team competing in the leading Swedish sailing event, GKSS Match Cup Marstrand, this month. With the backing of the marine sport, leisure and event logistics specialist, Paris Olympic hopeful Klara Wester and her team hope to better their semi-final position of 2020, as they compete with other top female teams for the Nordea Women's Trophy.

Swedish dinghy sailors Klara Wester and Rebecca Netzler, who compete in the 49erFX class at Olympic level, will be joined by match racers Julia Carlsson and Beata Torneman who ranked fourth in the world in 2019. The fifth team member is Ida Svensson, also part of the Swedish Sailing Team, who normally competes in the Nacra 17 foiling dinghy catamaran.

GAC Pindar's support for Wester and her team reflects GAC UK's joining Maritime UK's Diversity in Maritime Charter this year. The Charter holds its member organisations accountable for closing the diversity gap and making the maritime sector more inclusive and, as such, GAC UK and GAC Pindar are united in their ambition to improve pathways for women sailors.

The teams will be sailing the Far East 28 one-design yacht from 7th – 10th July

Tiffany was finished by Haines Boatyard at Itchenor which specialises in the restoration and maintenance of keelboats.

Tiffany is the 11th GRP Solent Sunbeam to be built and meticulous care was taken in her design and construction to make sure that the GRP boats sail exactly the same as the original wooden boats ensuring competitive racing across the 98 year age range of the fleet.

The Paris Court of Appeal has given its ruling over the future of the Cannes Yachting Festival in favour of Reed Expositions, thereby overturning a lower court's decision to award the management of the show to the Fédération des Industries Nautiques (FIN).

The court ruling gives Reed the rights to continue to manage the show until 2041.

''This is a victory for common sense and good business practices. We entered into the contract in good faith and under our watch the Cannes Yachting Festival has become Europe's largest in-water boating event. We are particularly grateful for the support we have received from our clients, the host city of Cannes and the Chamber of Commerce of Nice-Côte d'Azur,'' notes Michel Filzi, chief executive of RX France (previously Reed Expositions France).

MDL Marinas is delighted to announce it is the 'Official Marina Partner' of the British Keelboat League and RS Sailing for the second time, having previously sponsored the series in 2019.

The renewal of this exciting partnership will see MDL Marinas provide easy access to the water from its Hamble Point and Queen Anne's Battery marinas during the 2021 British Keelboat League events for the six competing RS 21 keelboats.

With Hamble Point Marina's direct access to the Solent and Queen Anne's Battery's proximity to Plymouth Sound, this support ensures the teams are located close to the start line. Participating sailors and organisers will also enjoy access to the marinas' excellent facilities to support their racing including slipways, boat repairs, and chandlery.

Established in 2016, the British Keelboat League's aim is to encourage participation in keelboat racing across the United Kingdom. It comprises a series of regional events where sailors compete in multiple short sprint races against teams from other clubs in their region. The most successful teams from each region then come together to battle it out in a national final to determine who'll be crowned the British Keelboat League champions.

Remembering Jacquetta Cator
Jacquetta Cator We were extremely sad to hear the news of the passing of the Hon Jacquetta Cator.

Jacquetta was integral to the formation and support of our charity during her 43 years with the Jubilee Sailing Trust, along with her husband and former Chairman Francis Cator.

Through the partnership between JST's co-founders, Christopher Rudd and Dr Tony Hicklin, the JST was formed in 1978 thanks to the fundraising efforts and support from both Francis and Jacquetta. The build of the charity's first pioneering flagship, the Lord Nelson, commenced in 1984 and the ship sailed on her maiden voyage from Southampton to Cherbourg on 17th October 1986, with financial backing and efforts from the Cator family.

Jacquetta's tenacity, spirit and zest for life was something also remembered by Captain Darren Naggs.

"Jacquetta was a delightful person who was always full of fun," Darren said.

"She meant so much to all the JST family and will be sadly missed. We will celebrate and remember her for her fantastic passion for life, and her unbounded enthusiasm for the JST and for all people involved. Everyone onboard Tenacious would like to send their heartfelt condolences to Jacquetta's family and friends at this sad time."

Jacquetta will leave behind a legacy of determination, which the JST will take forward in its ethos to make a difference to people's lives.

As we continue to offer people of all abilities the opportunity to climb aboard Tenacious for an immersive sailing experience, Jacquetta will be remembered each time she sets sail. The spirits of Francis and Jacquetta and what they gave to JST will never be forgotten.

* From Tony Castro

It is very rare that I do mail shots to everyone in my contact list, other than at Christmas time, but designing Tenacious for the Jubilee Sailing Trust was for me a very significant project in my career and the passing of Jacquetta Cator, whom I met several times during the 7 years that it took to design and build this ship, reminded me of how much work she and her husband, Francis, did for this truly amazing charitable organisation. Everyone should experience a day out in Tenacious. Every parent should send their children to experience what a trip on Tenacious is like.

I did it and was immensely affected and indeed “educated”, so I consider this a very important message to spread to my friends and colleagues. Book a day or two or more on Tenacious and you will be surprised.
