Round the Island Race
This year's Round the Island Race will take place on Saturday 3rd July 2021.

The event is a complete circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight starting on the Royal Yacht Squadron line just off Cowes. The fastest entrants will finish the 50nm course within 4 hours with 40' yachts taking on average 6-8 hour

Peaking at 2000 boats in 2011 for the 80th anniversary, the Round the Island Race typically attracts over 1700 boats, with as many as 16,000 competitors. Thus making it the fourth largest participatory sporting event in the UK. Beaten only by the London Marathon, and Great North and South Runs

Race Day weather forecast
Light and variable overnight becoming light SSE-ESE mainly 5-10 early in the morning. There will then be a period of light and variable wind ahead of the front before becoming S-SW as the front passes through, then SW 8-13 increasing 10-15 late afternoon. Max T 20C

North Sails Performance
The single goal at North Sails Performance is to produce the best foul weather gear in the world. No compromise.

North Sails Performance started their design process by talking to the sailing community, those within North Sails and those at the very top of the sport; America's Cup, Ocean Race, and Vendee Globe sailors.

The Performance team quickly realized that a key mission was to stop sailors getting damp bums and knees - traditional gear wasn't leaking but sailors were complaining of a constantly damp backside. Why was that happening?

Performance focused on this issue. The traditional Cordura reinforcement patches hold a lot of water when they're wet. They also create a pocket between the foul weather gear and the patch which gets wet, stays wet, can't dry out. Worse, this pocket of water can cause reverse breathability when against a hot deck - pulling trapped water into the garment.

This is where Performance was able to leverage being part of the world's most advanced sail making firm with a track record for innovation.

They created 4DL™ - a new four-layer durable laminated reinforcement. Instead of sewing a patch on the outside they used a totally non-absorbent, highly-abrasion resistant patch. They bonded it to the GORE-TEX® fabric eliminating the water-retaining pocket and all its draw-backs completely.

The guys who have been testing them offshore for over 30-40,000 miles describe them as an absolute game-changer when it comes to comfort.

GC32 Lagos Cup 1 - Fleet under Starter's Orders for the first time in 2021
The fleet is ready and raring to go after a useful warm-up day on the water in advance of the GC32 Lagos Cup 1 which begins on Thursday 1 July.

After more than 18 months away from the race track, the GC32 Racing Tour is roaring back into life this week in Lagos, the historic Algarve port which provides perfect conditions for a fleet of high performance foiling catamarans. "We've got a medium airs forecast for the next few days," said the Tour's principal race officer Stuart Childerley. "This venue is absolutely made for the GC32, flat water in pretty much all conditions, although today was lighter than we had hoped for."

An 8-knot north-westerly breeze looked promising but kept pulsing across the race course with small gusts and then long lulls that were easy to fall into for the foiling GC32s. Staying in the breeze as long as possible was the key to success, and in the practice race the front three broke away from the pack, with Alinghi leading Red Bull Sailing Team across the finish followed by Black Star Sailing Team. Team Rockwool Racing was best of the rest, followed by Zoulou and Swiss Foiling Academy.

Lagos is known to be a right-hand race track, so much so that on one of the practice starts the whole fleet ignored the right-hand bias in the line, all six starting on port tack in the frantic sprint to be first into the right-hand corner of the first upwind leg. However, if the forecast comes in as expected for the next four days of competition, Childerley could bring in the reaching start option which will force the teams to alter their tactics accordingly.

Six teams are ready to do friendly battle from 1 to 4 July on the beautiful, sunny Algarve. Foiling action in the GC32 fleet is about to commence, and the sailors can't wait.

Windeler Cup moves to 7th August 2021
The Island Sailing Club has decided to postpone the Windeler Cup event to Saturday 7 August 2021. Previously, this Saturday formed part of Cowes Week, with a full day's racing for the White Group classes, so an ideal time to run the new Windeler Cup and end a great week of sailing for the 13 classes already in Cowes (Daring, Dragon, Etchells, Flying Fifteen, Mermaid, Redwing, Sunbeam, Swallow, Sonar, Squib, RS Elite, Victory and XOD classes).

Rob Peace, Rear Commodore for Sailing, Island Sailing Club said: "Whilst we are delighted with the entry numbers for the Round the Island Race, it has been harder to encourage entries for the Windeler Cup. The feedback has been positive from many classes, but this year has been difficult for new events and competitors have been understandably cautious. The Club is also aware of the additional footfall the day boat classes would generate in the town and wished to reduce this and concentrate on organising the Round the Island Race in a safe and considerate manner."

The course for the Windeler Cup 'Round the Solent' race will be published on 6 August taking into account the expected conditions. The race will start from the Royal Yacht Squadron line off Cowes and finish on the ISC line. It is expected that the start will be at approximately 10.00 and the course will consist of legs of no more than 30 minutes each, so plenty of tactical options and passing opportunities, with a course length of about 4 hours.

The best Nacra 15 sailors has travelled to lake Silvaplana in Swizerland's Grison region, not far from St. Moritz to sail the European Nacra 15 Championships this week.

Nine teams from the home country Switzerland are competing. All three top teams from the last 2020 Swiss championships including the winners Axel Grandjean et Marie Mazuay, second and third Alexander de Weck et Tibor Devaud and Alexis Pariat et Charlotte Lerch are present.

After a long period of no racing 2021 is now action packed for the Nacra 15 Athletes. These much anticipated Nacra 15 European Championships are a welcome restart to a vibrant, International racing scene.

Two further key 2021 Nacra 15 regattas are the World Sailing Youth World Championships hosted in Oman mid December. Where the best from each Nation goes head to head. Additionally as a final step in that journey there are the IN15CA World Championships hosted at La Grande Motte early November.

Stoneways Marine VPRS National Championship
The Stoneways Marine VPRS National Championship is to be held at Lymington Town Sailing Club on the 28th and 29th August 2021.

The 2021 Championship is sponsored by Stoneways Marine, a leading yacht and marine trade insurance provider.

Keith Lovett, Managing Director & Senior Underwriter at Stoneways Marine said, "As an avid yacht racer myself and knowing so many who compete amongst the VPRS fleet, it is a pleasure to be able to support the 2021 VPRS National Championship. After such turbulent times I think everyone has been itching to get back out racing and we are keen to help make the Nationals of 2021 as memorable as we can."

The Velocity Prediction Rating System (VPRS) is rapidly growing in popularity due to its simplicity of using a conventional set of measurements and low entry cost. An annual rating certificate costs a mere £20. The principal of the VPRS is to rate a boat based on its performance potential and its use has meant easier race scoring, resulting in more diverse and appealing racing fleets. The system is now used across the South Coast of the UK, in parts of Europe and South America having developed considerably since its initial introduction by Poole Yacht Racing Association in 2010.

Irish Sailing Team Officially Selected for Tokyo
Team Ireland has officially selected a team of three sailors to compete in the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer. Olympic Silver Medallist Annalise Murphy is set to compete in her third Olympic Games in the Laser Radial Women, and her teammates Robert Dickson and Seán Waddilove will compete in the 49er Men.

The sailing events in Tokyo will run from 25 July - 2 August 2021 at Enoshima Yacht Harbour.

Murphy will be competing in her third Olympic Games; in London 2012 she came agonisingly close to a medal, finishing fourth. Against the odds the Dun Laoghaire based sailor finished second in Rio 2016, winning an Olympic silver medal for Team Ireland. Murphy is back competing in this Olympic category after taking a short break after Rio, when she temporarily switched her focus to the Volvo Ocean Race.

Heading into their first Olympic Games, Dickson and Waddilove are no strangers to success, in 2018 they won the 49er Under 23 Junior World title in Marseille, France making them Irish Sailors of the Year.

2021 Optimist World Championship
Riva del Garda, Italy: Just a few hours to go until the start of the Optimist World Championship, the flagship event of youth sailing sailing season, which for this year, after the postponement of the 2020 edition, has confirmed Fraglia Vela Riva as host location. The event returns to Riva del Garda eight years after the last edition, when in 2013 it was Singapore-born sailor Loh Jia Yi to be crowned World Champion, excelling over a fleet of 259 competitors.

Today, almost three hundred young athletes, representing fifty-six nations, have reached the city of Lake Garda, in Italy, to try to put the seal on the world title, won in the last three editions by the "record holder" of the Optimist Class Marco Gradoni.

With a maximum of five athletes for each nation, to bring the colors of Italy will be Quan Adriano Cardi (LNI Ostia), Lisa Vucetti (SVBG), Alessandro Cirinei (TMV), Alex Demurtas (FVR) and Lorenzo Ghirotti (FVR), coordinated by coach Marcello Meringolo and team leader Walter Cavallucci.

Races will kick off on Friday with three consecutive days of qualifying that will allow the fleet to be divided into Gold, Silver, Bronze and Emerald groups for the final stages, scheduled for 7, 8 and 9 July. On Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 July the participants will instead be involved in the Team World Championship.
