Star European Championship
Merkelbach/Weise Defending Their Leadership

Warm sun and sea breeze from south-west at 12-15 knots, Day Two of the 2021 Star European Championship was very similar to Day One, confirming Split, Croatia as one of the best, and most reliable, sailing spots in Europe.

Race Three and Four are now in the scoreboard and the top spots of the provisional overall ranking have slightly changed. Not the leaders though, Class President Hubert Merkelbach and Kilian Weise (GER) strongly defended their position with another bullet in today's first race and a sixth in the second, a bit trickier race, due to some major wind shifts. They are the second best of the day, behind Laser Olympic Silver medalist Tonci Stipanovic(CRO), who was fifth and first. He won the second race, with crew Tudor Bilic (CRO), fighting against their fellow countrymen Marin Misura and Tonko Barac who finished second. The latter had a modest advantage upwind, but Stipanovic/Bilic had a big hedge downwind and extended hugely on the last leg. They are respectively fifth and sixth in the overall ranking.

Tomorrow's forecast are for a lighter north wind, allowing the 34 team to test the equipment and their tactical skills with different conditions on a patchier race courses due to a big island in the way. The start is scheduled as usual for 1pm local time, and you can follow the racing thanks to Croatel live streaming on the Star Class website.

Swan Tuscany Challenge
Italy's Gulf of Follonica served up another day of near-perfect sailing conditions to the 23 crews of the Swan Tuscany Challenge. A stable 10-12 knot breeze and glassy seas made for good speeds with no distractions for the mixed amateur and professional crews aboard the fleet of ClubSwan 36s and ClubSwan 50 boats.

"We are trying to improve by watching the others," said Simon Sivitz, mainsail trimmer on CS36 Farstar. "For instance, we made some small changes to the mast settings compared to yesterday's leading boats. We are all so close, tacking from one boat to another, trying to find the best position to round the top mark."

The move paid off, with Farstar scoring a bullet and a 2nd place to put them third overall in the class. But the day belonged once again to G-Spot, Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio's CS36. He held onto his top position with a bullet, a third and a fourth place in the day's racing. That was in spite of a 20-degree wind shift to the right, which meant the upwind marks had to be moved during the race.

Vitamina was the other big winner of the day in the CS36 class, jumping three spots to overall second place with consistently sharp sailing. Andrea Lacorte's team posted a first, third and fourth to add to yesterday's bullet.

In the bigger boats, Marcus Brennecke's Hatari kept their cool with two impressive bullets. They would have leapfrogged Leonardo Ferragamo's Cuordileone but for a tactical error in the final race which saw them finish ninth with a scoring penalty.

Congressional Cup Returns
The excitement of Congressional Cup racing will return to Long Beach Yacht Club September 14 to 19, 2021 when the world's leading match racing skippers compete for this venerated trophy and the prized Crimson Blazer.

"Our lineup is set, with all six World Match Racing Tour Card holders and two wild cards!" exclaimed 2021 Congressional Cup Chair Chris Macy. "That's a testament to the regatta and the prestige that comes with winning the Congressional Cup: the sailing is competitive and hospitality unmatched! That all six Tour Card holders made it a priority to come here illustrates what a marquis event we have been putting on, for 56 years."

This year's Congressional Cup roster includes: defending champion Ian Williams (GBR), Eric Monnin (SUI), Nick Egnot-Johnson (NZL), Maxime Mesnil (FRA), Johnie Berntsson (SWE), Taylor Canfield (USA), Phil Robertson (NZL) and Scott Dickson (USA). Two final skippers will advance from LBYC's Ficker Cup qualifying event, slated for September 10 to 12.

The Congressional Cup was on hold in 2020 due to the pandemic, making 2019 champion Williams the longest reigning title-holder in history. But the six-time World Champion is also a quadruple winner of the Crimson Blazer – 2011, 2012, 2017 and 2019 – and tied with Taylor Canfield, Gavin Brady, Rod Davis and Peter Holmberg with four wins each. If Williams can clinch victory in 2021, he'll also become the winningest skipper in the 56-year history of this prestigious event.

Not if Canfield has his way! Canfield – with Congressional Cup victories in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2018 – also has his eye on the title, as he vies with formidable competition to unseat Williams.

Junior Junior earns Olympic selection in the Finn class
The 31-year-old was selected ahead of close friend and training partner Andy Maloney for the one position available to New Zealand in the heavyweight dinghy on the back of his consistently high results at pinnacle events.

In 2019 he became the first Kiwi to win the Finn Gold Cup (world championships) since its introduction in 1956 and he followed that with bronze at this month's Finn Gold Cup in Portugal.

Maloney won the world title in Portugal, not only illustrating the depth of Finn sailing in this country but also emphasising the success of the pair's shared campaign approach, and he will now take over as Junior's coach for the Olympics.

Junior was seventh in the Finn at the 2016 Rio Olympics and will go to Tokyo excited about his chances.

Maloney was philosophical about missing out, especially as he narrowly missed a spot in the team for the Rio Olympics to Sam Meech in the Laser, but fully supported the decision.

"It's mixed feelings for me," he said. "I'm obviously disappointed to not be competing in Tokyo but can be happy with my progression in the Finn over the Olympic cycle. Thanks to Josh and our coaches I can bow out of the Finn as the world champ, which is pretty cool.

New Zealand qualified for all 10 sailing events for Tokyo but the sailors in the women's 470, Laser Radial and men's and women's RS:X didn't meet New Zealand's tough selection criteria.

Yachting New Zealand high performance director Ian Stewart said Junior's selection represented another milestone for the sailing team with the Games due to start in less than two months.

Teams unveiled for 2021 GC32 Racing Tour
A mix of teams, both old and new, will be taking part on the GC32 Racing Tour in 2021. In one month's time, the World Sailing-approved circuit for high performance 32ft one design flying catamarans gets underway with the first of two events in Lagos, Portugal. These are followed by the GC32 World Championship in Villasimius, Sardinia in September, with the season's grand finale on Spain's Mar Menor in early November.

One of the longest serving GC32 skippers is France's Erik Maris, who first raced his GC32 in 2015. In addition to being a keen endurance motor racer (last year he competed with the Eurointernational team in the LMP2 class at the 24 hours Le Mans), Maris has a long, successful history in grand prix sailing, being a past Swan 45 European and Mumm 30 World Champion. Having finish third overall on the GC32 Racing Tour in 2018 and winning its Owner-Driver Championship in 2019, Maris returns this season with his same crew, led by America's Cup veteran Thierry Fouchier.

Unquestionably one of the most successful GC32 teams is Alinghi, of two time America's Cup winner Ernesto Bertarelli. In 2019 the Swiss team was the GC32 Racing Tour stand-out performer, winning the season and claiming victory in three of the five events, including the GC32 World Championship.

As in previous seasons, Bertarelli will be sharing the helm with Arnaud Psarofaghis.

sailors not just on the GC32 Racing Tour but in top level multihull racing generally: Austrian double Olympic Tornado gold medallists Roman Hagara and Hans-Peter Steinacher of Red Bull Sailing Team will retire at the end of the year.

Hagara wishes to go out in style: "Our goal is to really fight for the podium spots in each event while the big overall goal is to top the leaderboard at the end of the year. We don't know how the other teams will perform because we've had a very long break and no one has been really practising and there is little preparation. It will be exciting to see how the other teams go and how we'll get on when we come to race."

The intention is for Red Bull Sailing Team to compete with the same crew as in 2019.

New Monohull Entry From Brazil For The Cape2Rio Race 2023 - Delta465
The Royal Cape Yacht Club and Iate Club do Rio de Janeiro are delighted to receive another entry for the 2023 Cape2Rio Race. The entry, still to be named, is a modern cruiser-racer, a Delta 465 which is to be launched in mid 2022. The owner Marcio Lima is hoping to encourage other sailors to also participate in the race.

Yacht racing in Brazil happens across the seaboard with numerous yacht clubs and facilities catering for both cruising and racing yachts. Having a big Brazilian contingent in the event is a stated objective of the Race Organisers and to date we now have three confirmed Brazilian entries, which is encouraging. Marcio Lima and his crew will be representing Clube dos Jangadeiros, located in Porto Alegre, South Brazil.

The Delta465,designed by Nestor Volker, is a unique combination of cruising comfort and racing performance, with a generous sail plan and spacious cockpit. We hope to see more of these boats on the water come 2023 and wish Marcio and his team well in their preparations.

The Mac is Back
The Chicago Yacht Club has officially announced that its ever-popular Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust (CYCRTM) will return this summer after taking a hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Started in 1898, the race annually hosts over 3,000 sailors and covers 333 statute miles, starting from Chicago's Navy Pier on Lake Michigan and finishing at Mackinac Island, Mich. on Lake Huron. The 112th edition starts Friday, July 16 for cruising sailboats and Saturday, July 17 for performance sailboats.

The largest boat entered thus far is Peter Thornton's (Burr Ridge, Ill.) historic 104-foot ketch Whitehawk (in the Cruising Division). Of Thornton's 19 crew members, nine share his surname. At the other end of the spectrum, the two smallest boats in the fleet are 26 footers, each being sailed with just two people (in the Doublehanded Division) and each having one Slovenian and one American aboard.

"The 'Chicago Mac' is the oldest annual freshwater distance race in the world, and it has earned a reputation as one of the most prestigious sailing races, with entries from the Midwest and Canada as well as the East, West and Gulf Coasts of the U.S. and as far afield as Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia," said Sandoval. "For many families it's a rite of passage for their children and their children's children to experience the Race to Mackinac."

Sandoval added that the race also attracts many different types of sailors, from newbies to veterans, amateurs to pros, and youngsters to "Old Goats" (as they call them) who have completed more than 25 Chicago Macs.
