Tom Dolan Profiting In Trade Winds on Transat en Double, 1200 Miles to the Finish Line
Tom and Gildas continue their westward journey. They are approaching the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. There is only one third of the crossing left to reach Saint Barthelemy.

With just over 1200 nautical miles to the finish line and more than ten days since leaving Brittany, Ireland's Tom Dolan and his French co-skipper Gildas Mahé are fighting hard in third place on the Transat en Double Concarneau - Saint Barthélemy. Racing Mahé's boat Breizh Cola the duo have been between five and eight miles behind the leaders Pierre Leboucher and Thomas Rouxel and have a decent four miles in hand ahead of the fourth-placed duo.

Over the weekend, especially, there were two activities occupying the thoughts of the leading teams, if and when to gybe south to find stronger, more settled trade winds, and how best to deal with the massive quantities of weed in the water which becomes hooked on the appendages of the Beneteau Figaro 3 yachts.

Explaining their choice to be among the first to gybe south Dolan says, "Since the Canaries we had it our heads that we wanted to get south as there has always been more wind in the south and a better angle. But at the same time we wanted to make sure the port gybe was clean and so we waited for the afternoon and evening as the wind shifts to the right overnight, but Pierre and Lois and Tom seem to have done well going earlier and getting to the gain earlier, they won a lot. Our idea was a bit conservative and it did work quite well but it really, really worked well for the others and we have a bit to pull back on them.

Star European Championship
International racing for the Star Class unveils its come back tomorrow from Split, Croatia, where the 2021 Star Europeans will take place with 35 boats on the starting line representing 20 countries, from Europe and overseas. After a Western Hemisphere in April in Miami, with mostly all-American competitors, it is relief to see all the different flags, and hearing different languages on the docks of JK Mornar, the yacht club hosting the event, with travel bans slowly being lifted around the world.

Three Gold Stars will be on the race course; Enrico Chieffi with Ferdinando Colaninno (ITA), Xavier Rohart with Antony Munos (FRA) and Augie Diaz (USA), sailing in Split with European Class Vice President Christian Nehammer. One more Star World Champion is in Split this week, world champion crew Frithjof Kleen from Germany sailing with Italian skipper Giovanni Coppo. Former European Champion, and Class President Hubert Merkelbach is sailing with Kilian Weise (GER), and the current European title holder Piet Eckert (SUI), has changed crew and will defend the title with Edoardo Natucci (ITA).

Local Laser silver Olympic meadalist, Tonci Stipanovic, will also join the fleet, and it won't be his first time on a Star. He has attended various SSL Finals, the Europeans in Riva del Garda six month ago and the Eastern Hemisphere that was held here in 2016.

Racing starts Wednesday, May 26th at 13.00 local time (12 GMT) and ends on Saturday May 29th, seven races are scheduled, with four required to constitute a series. The weather forecast is positive with a gentle sea breeze that has been blowing consistently these past days, allowing a perfect practice race today with the forecast the same for the rest of the week.

The event will be streamed live on the Class' website thanks to the local authorities and Croatel, sponsor of the event, where you can also find news, pictures and video highlights, also uploaded on the official social media channels.

Paul Goodison joins for Italian and Great Britain SailGP events
Following Great Britain SailGP Team's winning start to Season 2 in Bermuda, the team is making planned changes for the first-ever Italian Sail Grand Prix in Taranto (05-06 June), and its home UK event in Plymouth (17-18 July).

Due to long standing personal commitments, the team's Skipper Ben Ainslie will not compete in the next two events with the helm role filled instead by decorated foiling sailor Paul Goodison, whilst Ben will continue to lead the team in his role as CEO and return as helm for the ROCKWOOL Denmark Sail Grand Prix.

Goodison joins fresh from the 36th America's Cup in Auckland where he was a member of the US challenger American Magic aboard their AC75 Patriot having previously been with the Swedish entry (Artemis Racing) for the 35th America's Cup in Bermuda performing the role of mainsail trimmer for both teams.

Hailing from Rotherham, UK, Goodison brings a wealth of Olympic and foiling experience to the table having competed for Team GB at the 2004 Athens, 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympic Games. Goodison won Gold at the Beijing Games and was crowned Laser World Champion in 2009. Following his Olympic retirement, Goodison headed into the world of foiling, developing his skill set in the Moth, which culminated in becoming a three-time Moth World Champion (2016, 2017 & 2018).

SailGP resumes in Taranto for the Italy Sail Grand Prix on 5 June 2021. The Great Britain SailGP Team's home Grand Prix takes place in Plymouth on 17 and 18 July 2021. A limited number of tickets for the Great Britain Sail Grand Prix in Plymouth can be purchased online now, at SailGP.com/GreatBritain . Additional tickets will be released in line with the Government COVID-19 updates.

Battle of the Foils
Swedish electric boatbuilder Candela has released a video of what it says is the first-ever race between a foiling motorboat and foiling sailboat.

The Candela C-7 motorboat and the Italian sailing monohull racer Persico 69F, whose designs both make use of hydrofoils, proved to be equally fast when racing on Italy's Lake Garda this week. Both reached speeds of around 30kt in a light breeze.

The Persico 69F sailing boat was built for performance racing; its hydrofoils mean the craft can reach a top speed of 35kt and sail at high speeds even in light winds.

For Candela C-7 - an electric motorboat already in serial production - the foils enable a long range on pure battery power at speeds previously only possible in combustion engine boats. With a cruise speed of 22kt and a top speed of 30kt, it can fly for 2.5 hours before depleting its 40kWh battery. This is two to three times longer than conventional, fast electric boats, according to Candela. The foils also provide a quieter and smoother ride.

Candela says its C-7 is currently the best-selling electric motorboat in Europe, with 30 sold boats in just over a year.

A Man on a Mission - OnCourse - Episode 12
It started off as a tour aboard a 70ft tri that had just set a blistering pace offshore, but when I met the owner of PowerPlay the story suddenly became more about him than his boat. Peter Cunningham has owned PowerPlay for 5 years and has been aboard for pretty much all of the record breaking runs. Nothing strange in that, except Peter is about to turn 80. His is an extraordinary tale as I discovered. We also talk to another extraordinary offshore sailor, Dee Caffari as she takes on a new challenge in the UK's first double handed offshore series. Plus, record breaking for the rest of us is now a reality, the Ocean Race Europe prepares to kick off and this episode sees another double helping of Docktalk. -- Matthew Sheahan

Grafham Belle Beckons The Start Of Summer Racing
After the longest ever winter, sailors could enjoy something approaching more typical spring temperatures at this weekend's Grafham Belle. Part of the Seldén SailJuice Winter Series, this new event at Grafham Water Sailing Club has attracted a broad mix of dinghies ready to compete on handicap.

Among the hot contenders are the 505 crews, Craig Thompson & Paddy Lewis from Minnis Bay, the formidable wife & husband combo from Stokes Bay - Penny & Russ Clark, and Staunton Harold's former Fireball World Champion Tom Gillard along with Richard Pepperdine.

The 505 competes very effectively under the Great Lakes handicap numbers, the well-proven variant of the standard RYA PY numbers. But then so do many other classes, which of course is the whole point of handicap competition. Other likely contenders for the overall prize include Simon Horsfield and Katie Burridge who are set to race their 2000 doublehander at the Grafham Belle on the weekend of Saturday 29 May and Sunday 30 May.

With the forecast looking warm and sunny for a change, there's still time to enter the event here:

Online entry closes at 23:59 hours on Wednesday 26 May.

52 Super Series Valencia Regatta Cancelled
As the minimum number of teams to stage a viable, competitive event has not been realised, the first regatta of the 2021 52 Super Series , the Royal Cup 52 Super Series Valencia Mar, has been cancelled. Travel restrictions and previous commitments are contributing factors, but it seems certain the class in the Mediterranean will bounce back with 15-17 boats expected at Puerto Portals in late August.

Puerto Portals, Mallorca hosts the Puerto Portals 52 Super Series Sailing Week & TP52 20th Anniversary Invitational August 24-28. This regatta, which has been carried over from last year, will celebrate 20 years of the TP52 Class, with a celebratory festival featuring many well-known boats and teams, as well as the return of 52 Super Series racing. Around 15-17 boats are expected, which should see the 52 Super Series starting on a high note.

The second event will be the Menorca 52 Super Series Sailing Week in Mahón, Menorca September 28 - October 2, leading up to the Rolex TP52 World Championship RCNP 2021 in Palma, Mallorca from November 2-6.

Historic stricken ship stuck on Holyhead breakwater
In Holyhead, a stricken tall ship which ran aground last week at the north Wales port's breakwater is set to be dismantled.

It is understood that the 83-year-old tall ship Zebu has been too badly damaged to be salvaged. A crane company is expecting to remove the two masts today with bad weather forecast.

As NorthWalesLive reported on Tuesday, the rest of the dismantling work is expected to be completed next week.

"It's very sad," said Mark Francis, of Bob Francis Crane Hire. "She's a piece of British nautical history. There will never be another one like her built again because the skills and crafts needed are being lost."

He added: "We are taking all the rigging and the masts off to stabilise the hull. We may have to stop then until next week because of a freshening blow."

The first European study on the impact of Covid-19 on the international boating industry, commissioned by EBI, BVWW and boot Düsseldorf, was presented there. From the research, led by two graduates of Jade University Wilhelmshaven, it is clear that the watersports industry has great potential and looks forward to the coming years with optimism.

Cannes Yachting Festival is set to go ahead in September, with almost 600 boats and 430 exhibitors registered so far.

Organisers say the continuous improvement of the health situation in France and in Europe following vaccination campaigns and the loosening of health measures announced by the French government augur well for the reopening of trade shows from June onwards.

It will be one of the first major boating events to open its doors.

Work is underway regarding health procedures; monitoring and controlled access to the show will be in place depending on the regulatory framework set by the government at the time of the show.

Presentation of a health pass could be mandatory for visitors taking part in the event.

The festival is due to take place from 7 to 12 September 2021 in Cannes.
