ORC European Championship - Race day two
This morning the fleet of 62 boats competing in the ORC European Championship took to the race course located 4 miles off Capri's Marina Grande. Conditions were somewhat more stable than yesterday, with about 10 to 12 knots of breeze from 180° for the first race of the day. At 11:40 a.m. the Race Committee sounded the starting signal for the smallest boats in Group C, at 11.55 for Class A and at 12 midday for Class B. All three groups were set courses around the cans. For the second race the committee waited for an expected wind shift, which materialized at around 2 p.m., with the breeze now coming in from 230° and falling below 10 knots. The three groups were then able to get off the starting line for the second race of the day between 2:46 p.m. and 3:06 p.m., with a course adjustment on the last windward leg due to a further shift of about 15° in the breeze.

Like yesterday, today was a long day on the water for the crews as the Race Committee seemed determined to bank 3 more races, commencing the third starting sequence at 5:26 p.m. with a breeze from 290° blowing at 6 to 8 knots. This attempt was eventually abandoned due to constant wind shifts, and at 5:33 p.m. the fleet was sent back to the docks for the day.

Taking home the top results in the two races at the end of another lengthy day were:

After 5 races, the overall ranking is as follows:

Class A

2. Fever - Swan 45 - Klaus Diederichs - GBR
3. Tengher - Swan 45 - Alberto Magnani - ITA

Class B

2. Fantaghiro - Swan 42 - Carlandrea Simonelli

2. Sugar 3 - Italia 11.98 - Ott Kikkas - EST

Tomorrow brings the final day of racing and the assignment of the title of ORC European Champion 2021 during the prize-giving ceremony at 4 p.m.

44Cup racing resumes Thursday in Portoroz
After a few days out on the water training here in Slovenia, owners and crews of the eight RC44s are now back in the saddle and ready for tomorrow's start of the 44Cup Portoroz. The last time the 44Cup fleet raced was in Palma in mid-November 2019. A full season was scheduled for 2020 but was cancelled in its entirety due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Formal practice racing was held in the waters off Portoroz today under the command of new 44Cup Principal Race Officer Maria Torrijo, who has taken over from the revered PRO Peter 'Luigi' Reggio, who has retired after 12 years of sterling service to the high performance one design class. Torrijo comes from having most recently been Deputy Race Officer for the 36th America's Cup in New Zealand.

Despite the long break, out on the water the RC44 fleet seems as competitive as ever. "The teams are pretty close as always - that is what we have seen in training," says Nico Poons, owner of Charisma, which ended the 2019 season in fifth place overall. "We will have to see how things are going, but it is all so open. All boats can win."

Poons hasn't sailed his RC44 since 2019. but since then has raced a smaller sportsboat in Monaco, where he resides. "It is good to be back, but you do feel how rusty you are."

Harken Online Catalog The Harken Catalog - Online Flip Book Version.

Obsessively Updated for Increasingly Accurate Ordering.

If you're a sailor, you've probably picked up the Harken Catalog. Thick. Rectangular. Hundreds of pages. Pictures. Charts. It comes out each fall. If you're like us, you have about 7 years of back issues in the bathroom. It's simply the best tool to make sure you choose the right Harken equipment to get faster.

There's just one thing: The catalog comes off the presses once a year. Harken doesn't stop making new stuff. So the print catalog is almost immediately out of date.

We fixed that. Now there's a Harken Catalog that gets updated all year long. You can download it right here right now. You can also get it at the bottom of the home page of the new Harken.com (which you should also check out).

The online Harken Catalog looks just like the print catalog. You can flip pages. You can scan the codes and get to the video. You can call your foredeck guy and immediately get on the same page. It IS the Harken catalog.

There are however, two small differences:
1. It's always up to date.
2. It will never give you a paper cut.

Australian Brian Pattinson is the 20th entry in the Global Solo Challenge
Australian Brian Pattinson from Melbourne Australia is an extremely experienced skipper with over 500 thousand miles of sailing and racing double or single-handed to his account. He is used to sail in the treacherous waters of the Bass Strait and south of Tasmania, where he learnt to respect the enormous force of nature.

Brian is the 20th entry in the Global Solo Challenge and will be looking to buy a boat that suits the staggered starts event format then prepare it for the challenges of the Southern Ocean.

What brought you to like single-handed sailing?
I was doing a double-handed race to Japan, when my co skipper got sick and had to leave the boat. I continued, with the belief that I'll go as far as I can and then retire when I can't handle any more.

After a while it was closer to get to Japan than back to Melbourne, so I just kept going. I loved the challenge of doing it by myself. And the satisfaction.

What prompted you to sign up for this event?
Once you're dead you are dead for a very long time... this is just what I've been looking for. Every body needs an adventure, something to look forward to.

After a while it was closer to get to Japan than back to Melbourne, so I just kept going. I loved the challenge of doing it by myself. And the satisfaction.

Rolex Fastnet Race - the largest, most diverse offshore yacht race by far
With 450+ yachts entered in this year's 49th edition of the Rolex Fastnet Race, the Royal Ocean Racing Club's biennial flagship event has consolidated its position as the biggest offshore yacht race in the world.

The 2021 Rolex Fastnet Race sets sail from the Solent on 8th August, back to its original position of the Sunday following Cowes Week, but with a new finish port. As usual, the course takes the boats down the south coast of England, between the Scilly Isles and Land's End and across the Celtic Sea to the Fastnet Rock off southwest Ireland. The fleet then returns rounding Bishop Rock, to the west of the Scilly Isles. From here the course is new for 2021 with the finish port having moved from Plymouth, its traditional destination since the race's first edition in 1925, to Cherbourg in northern France. This change increases the length of the race from 608 to 695 miles. Tactically it will place fresh demands on crews with a final hurdle of tackling the fast-moving currents of the Alderney Race before reaching the finish.

The change of destination for the Rolex Fastnet Race has been made by the RORC as Cherbourg's Port Chantereyne is better able to accommodate the race's enormous fleet. Bringing the world's largest offshore race to France is also highly appropriate given France being the world's leading nation for this genre of racing. It is home to events like the Vendée Globe, Route du Rhum, Solitaire du Figaro and Mini Transat, and French skippers having won the last two Volvo Ocean Races. French success has also extended to the Rolex Fastnet Race where in 2019 French yachts won nine of the 10 classes. Although the race was won overall by the American VO70 Wizard, overall IRC honours went to French yachts in the three editions before.

Within the IRC fleet many past champions are returning - all of them French. These include Didier Gaudoux's JND 39 Lann Ael 2 (2017 overall winner), Nicolas Loday and Jean Claude Nicoleau's Grand Soleil 43 Codiam (IRC One 2009 and 2011), Nicolas Groleau's Mach 45 Bretagne Telecom (IRC Canting Keel 2013 and 2015, second overall in 2019), Jacques Pelletier's Milon 41 L'Ange de Milon (IRC One in 2019), Gilles Fournier and Corinne Migraine's J/133 Pintia (IRC Two in 2017). As mentioned, Alex Loison is returning, while the 2015 winner Gery Trentesaux is racing in the Class40 aboard Antoine Carpentier's Courrier Redman.

Going Back to Where it All Began (and a bit of normalcy)
Block Island Race Week HQ is headed back to Champlin's Marina and Resort where Race Week first started and the traditional after-racing parties will return

For those sailors old enough to remember, Block Island Race Week participants typically both raced and slept on their boats all week-long, which created a fun atmosphere right on the docks. Those tie-ups occurred at Champlin's Marina and Resort on the southwestern side of the Great Salt Pond. Now in 2021, we are thrilled to announce that we are going back to where it all began and there WILL BE post-racing socials.

Champlin's Marina and Resort - which is under new management and undergoing a massive renovation - will be the new home of Block Island Race Week presented by Margaritaville. The Race Headquarters and operations will be based here, as will our traditional post-racing socials known as the "tent parties." This year, however, there will be fewer tent coverings and more outdoor space with sailors using Champlin's sprawling lawns and newly constructed plaza to gather for a drink to celebrate a day of racing.

All skippers must register their crew

All crew must sign the Race Week waiver on YachtScoring:

All participants must sign an attestation that they have either been vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to June 7th (in order to be considered fully vaccinated by June 21), or have had a negative PCR test within 72 hours of arrival on the island. You will be asked to upload a copy of your vaccination card or test result: https://stormtrysail.org/covidform/

After that hiatus which 2020 was in so many ways, the YJA Yachtsman of the Year and Young Sailor of the Year Awards are back, and the Yachting Journalists' Association is delighted to announce that Stoneways Marine, the marine insurance provider with genuine service, support, and experience, will be the title sponsor of the awards in 2021.

Following on from the huge success of the star-studded 2019 event, where key members of the yachting press, marine industry figureheads and an array of sailing talent joined together, the Grand Café in Southampton has again been reserved to host the YJA Stoneways Marine Gala Awards Dinner on Friday 10th September, coinciding with Press Day of the Southampton International Boat Show.

Nominations for the Stoneways Marine YJA Yachtsman of the Year and Young Sailor of the Year Awards, and the Young Journalist of the Year, can be made by anyone, and are actively encouraged. The nomination period will open on Monday 2nd August, closing at midnight on Sunday 29th August. The YJA Committee will then compile shortlists for the full membership to vote on, with the winners to be announced during the YJA Stoneways Marine Gala Awards Dinner on 10th September.

The Yachting Journalists' Association is of course hugely appreciative of Stoneways Marine's title sponsorship of the awards. Their support enables the presentation to be held during an event which befits the stature of these historic trophies.

An escalation of tariffs between the European Union and the US has been avoided with the joint EU/US announcement today, that planned tariff increases by the EU that were set to double the retaliatory tariff on American-made boats and engines from 25% to 50% on June 1, will not now take place. The tariff will remain at 25%.

First implemented in 2018 in response to the Trump administration's tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, the tariff has lead to marked decrease in US exports of these products and would virtually close off sales to European consumers if doubled.

The tariff has also harmed European dealers and distributors who imported American brands, with an estimated impact of some $400 million in lost sales to trading partners on both sides of the Atlantic.

Therefore, the EU intends to temporarily suspend the application of the automatic increase of its rebalancing measures foreseen to enter in force on 1 June 2021. The EU and US will engage in discussions expeditiously to find solutions to this dispute, end the imposition of tariffs and to tackle global excess capacity before the end of the year.
