Maxi Yacht Capri Trophy Day three: Fra Diavolo maintains top spot
Another coastal race of approximately 30 miles was set for the third race of the Maxi Yacht Capri Trophy, on a regatta course once again blessed with ideal sailing conditions. The westerly breeze blowing at 14 to 16 knots on the starting line allowed the fastest boat to complete the course in just over 2 hours and 30 minutes.

After today's start off Capri, the maxi yachts rounded an offset mark before turning for the second mark off Punta Campanella, on the mainland, and proceeding to round the island clockwise before passing Punta Campanella for a second time and heading for the finish line off Capri's Marina Grande. The racers were particularly appreciative of the excellent course management under the watchful eye of the President of the Race Committee, Alfredo Ricci.

The star of the day was once again the Mylius 18E35 Fra Diavolo, owned by Vincenzo Adessi, who add precious points to their lead in the general classification with today's victory. Second place went to Luca Scoppa's Blue Oyster, under the guidance of tactician Roberto Ferrarese, while the French Swan 601, Lorina 1895, claimed third place.

After three days of racing, and with the first act of the Rolex Capri Sailing Week drawing to its conclusion tomorrow, the provisional overall classification in the two classes is as follows:

Performance:
Fra Diavolo - Vincenzo Adessi - Yacht Club Gaeta
Lorina 1895 - Jean Pierre Barjon - Yacht Club de France
Cippa Lippa X - Guido Paolo Gamucci - Yacht Club Punta Ala

Classic:
Blue Oyster - Luca Scoppa - Reale Yacht Club Canottieri Savoia
Shirlaf - Giuseppe Puttini - C.N. Marina di Alimuri
Stella Maris - Matteo Fossati - Viverelavela

Transat en Double
The start last night already seems a long way off for the 18 duos of the Double Transat - Concarneau - Saint-Barthelemy who have made their mark in the Bay of Biscay. The fleet is grouped together close to the direct route and is now enjoying good conditions. Relatively clear from a strategic point of view, the situation will get worse tomorrow near Cape Finisterre.

After the first uncomfortable and invigorating night, the conditions became more pleasant throughout the day. The swell has calmed down a bit and the sun has returned. The wind lost intensity and turned to the right. As Pierre Quiroga (Skipper Macif) reveals, this allowed the duos to fly a gennaker. The speeds of the Figaro Beneteau 3s have increased. According to Meteo Consult, the sailors will benefit in the evening from a northwesterly wind of 17 to 20 knots. Enough to keep good speeds in the southern part of the Bay of Biscay.

During the night, the north-westerly wind will weaken. Then when a ridge crosses early in the morning, the westerly wind will only blow between 10 and 13 knots. The flow will then turn southwest as it approaches the Spanish coast, or in line with the duos route.

Tomorrow evening, the wind will get stronger.

Marion Bermuda Race Cancellation
The Marion Bermuda Race Board of Trustees has made the extremely difficult decision to cancel the 2021 Marion Bermuda Race due to the current environment and unpredictable nature of Covid-19.

The Organizing Committee has worked hard over the last several months to develop a viable plan that would work for all involved in the execution of the race. The government in Bermuda has been as accommodating as possible considering their first priority is to protect the citizens of Bermuda.

The Covid-19 situation continues to evolve unpredictably. The guidelines set forth by the CDC on international travel which at this point have Bermuda listed as a "very high risk" travel designation meaning that all travel to Bermuda should be avoided.

The Marion Bermuda Race established from the beginning of the planning process that we would not do anything that would place skippers, crews, volunteers or staff in harm's way. The Trustees felt strongly that if we were to run the 2021 race within the current Covid-19 environment and guidance we would be ignoring that position.

We will be sending out additional information to all skippers within the next few days.

We would like to thank all competitors for your support and understanding during this difficult time. I would also like to thank the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club, Beverly Yacht Club and Blue Water Sailing Club and all of the committee members and volunteers that have spent countless hours planning the event.

Race against Suhaili at Cowes Classics Week
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston has entered Cowes Classics Week with his famous ketch Suhaili, in which he was the first to sail singlehanded non-stop around the world in the Golden Globe Race in 1968-69.

Having recently refitted this iconic yacht, Sir Robin will no doubt be hoping to take home some silverware at the end of the week!

Suhaili is one of many new entries at this year's Cowes Classics Week, helping to swell numbers as enthusiasm builds for a return to sailing as restrictions are lifted.

Cowes Classics Week, organised by the Royal London Yacht Club, runs from 4th to 9th July, immediately following the Island Sailing Club's inaugural Windeler Cup.

The regatta encompasses an exciting variety of racing for traditional yachts and lively club-based social events throughout the week. New features for 2021 include Classics Day on Tuesday 6th July, in which up to 60 classic cars and classic power boats will be on display on The Parade and adjacent pontoons, together with some treasures from the Classic Boat Museum, the regatta's official charity this year.

Thanks to the generous support of the Isle of Wight ferry operator Red Funnel, competitors and participants in Classics Day are now able to bring their cars, yachts and power boats to Cowes at significantly discounted prices.

Allianz Regatta at Medemblik: 2-13 June
A few months ago, the organization of the Allianz Regatta announced that the Open Dutch Championships will not take place in June. Today it was announced that also the Eurosaf Inclusive European Championship will not take place during the event in June. Strict travel restrictions and a limited number of registrations made the organization decide to focus the Allianz Regatta entirely on the Olympic classes. The Open Dutch Championships has, as mentioned earlier, been moved to next autumn.

The event has been reinvented in November 2020 but has a rich past. The Allianz Regatta builds on the legacy of the Spa-, Holland- and Delta Lloyd Regatta. Since 1985 this tournament has been one of the leading European Olympic sailing events. The Allianz Regatta is proud to continue the legacy and set the bar even higher in the coming years. Good to mention; Allianz is not only naming partner of the Allianz Regatta but also the Youth Sailing World Championships in 2022 and the Sailing World Championships in 2023, which both will be held in The Hague.

Due to lack of registrations, the 470 Mens and 470 Womens class competition at Allianz Regatta have been cancelled.

Scott vows to rally for Tokyo; Wetherell bows out on a high
Giles Scott says he will "regroup" for the upcoming Olympic Games after a "disappointing" ninth-place finish at the Finn world championships.

Scott, the reigning Olympic champion, headed into the Finn Gold Cup eyeing his fifth world title, fresh from winning silver at the European Championships last month.

But it wasn't to be, as he fell victim to tricky conditions in Porto, Portugal, that resulted in racing on only three of the five regatta days.

The Gold Cup was the last major regatta before the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The next test for the world's best Finn sailors will be on the waters of Enoshima in just over two months.

Scott's right-hand man, training partner Henry Wetherell, ended his Finn career with a 13th-place finish, adding to the seventh he scored at the Europeans in April.

With the Finn being removed from the Olympic slate after Tokyo 2020, the 2021 Gold Cup was Wetherell's last outing in the heavyweight singlehander that made its Olympic debut at Helsinki 1952.

"That was one of the trickiest regattas I've done for a while," he said. "Only three days of racing out of five, but I'm glad I managed to have a consistent last day to jump a few spots to 13th.

"That was my last Finn regatta, and I'm glad to come away with some solid Europeans and worlds results... now it's a big push to finish the training with Giles before the Olympics."

Choosing the Right Crew
Viki Moore on noonsite.com notes a number of things you should consider when you are looking for crew to help move your boat from one place to another and when you need an extra pair of hands on board. What to look for in a sailing resume, where to post and look for crew, arranging the first meet and greet, expectations on both the skipper and crew side and more are covered. Read More

There seems to be no shortage of people who are keen to volunteer their time to get some more experience and have an adventure along the way. After hearing many horror stories of passages gone wrong when personalities clash, it is well worth taking a little extra time to check each other out before casting off the mooring lines.
