Joan Cardona cleans up on day 2 of Finn Europeans in Vilamoura
Joan Cardona, the defending U23 European Champion from Spain, showed some serious form on the second day of the 2021 Open and U23 Finn European Championship in Vilamoura, Portugal. Cardona is one of the world's most exciting emerging sailing talents, and today won both races in a fleet packed with some of the best Olympic sailors in the world.

He leads the 49 boat fleet from 29 nine nations after four races. Hungary's Zsombor Berecz drops to second while Croatia's Milan Vujasinovic climbs to third.

Cardona has already made his mark elsewhere in the sport. He won the 2020 eSailing World Championship and is a member of the Spanish SailGP team, but his Olympic career could be over before it even starts, having no chance to sail another boat due to his physique.

Following the news this week that World Sailing consider there is a distinct possibility the offshore keelboat option will be rejected by the IOC for 2024, the prospect exists again that the Finn could be included for Paris 2024 after all.

Cardona explained how this decision would affect him.

"For me it would be a life changer if the Finn class makes it to the next Olympics. I am still U23 and did not manage to qualify to the Olympics yet."

He is still one of the youngest sailors here but is showing great form in one of the toughest fleets in the world.

"This fleet is so talented that taking all of us out from the Olympics, it's a really big loss for the sport of sailing. I really hope the Finn class can stay Olympic for much more time."

Racing in Vilamoura is scheduled to continue at 12.00 on Wednesday.

Prancing Horses
"What's behind you doesn't matter" was Enzo Ferrari's famous quote. The Italian marque founded out of the Alfa Romeo racing division in 1939 is undoubtedly one of the world's leading superbrands and with a high-tech manufacturing division and wind tunnel at Maranello in the commune of Modena, it is set to join the America's Cup party with an exclusive tie-up with the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team. Getting the Prancing Horse involved in yachting is a major coup for the Italians - the branding alone puts it even further ahead in the looks department - but it's the technical firepower and testing capabilities that could well be the extra few percentage points that rockets Patrizio Bertelli's team to Cup glory.

But it's nervous times. A new CEO could scupper any AC tie-up to concentrate solely on motor-related activities. Global shareholders in Ferrari demand performance across both its manufacturing and sporting divisions and any deviation from the core high octane focus will be eyed with suspicion.

An AC project will have to be done on the side. Ferrari may well be able to make the incredible wind tunnel at Maranello available for short periods but the F1 focus is relentless in aero so time will be limited. Composites and technical computing of aerodynamics, similar to the Ineos tie-up with Mercedes Petronas AMG - the racing team which Ratcliffe owns a third of with Toto Wolff and the manufacturer - are more likely areas where the Ferrari designers could get involved but again, time will be short without a commercial arrangement from Bertelli.

Introducing The New Harken MKIV-Ocean Cruising Furler
Harken At Harken, we spend a bit of time every year asking sailors and our professional rigging customers for feedback on their most (and least) favorite Harken products. Lately it’s been oddly predictable: our MKIV line of headsail furlers rank at or near the very top of their lists. Why? Broadly we’re told MKIV has proven to be durable, reliable and easy-to-use for sailors and is appropriately efficient for riggers to install.

This assessment drove our decision to develop a brand new line of cruising furlers based on the technology and the geometry of that MKIV. Now this might not sound like a logical leap requiring a lot of advanced brain power…let’s just say it always looks so obvious at the end.

Our new MKIV Ocean furling line is built and featured especially for cruising applications. It’s smooth-rolling enough to make every furl a little less physical, and bullet proof to stand and deliver for years. It’s designed especially for intuitive assembly and retrofit. The Ocean furler offers Harken’s most robust capability. Then we add the features cruising sailors have been requesting, remove things they want offloaded and offer MKIV Ocean at a less racy price.

New programme for the Rolex Giraglia race
The Yacht Club Italiano, organiser of the 68th edition of the classic offshore race, makes it known that, because of the continuing extreme uncertainty internationally, and in particular on the southern French coast, because of regulations to limit the spread of Covid 19 - which would prevent adequate organisation of the event in St Tropez - it has decided, with the support of its partners, to modify the programme.

The Rolex Giraglia will thus start on Wednesday, June 16 from Sanremo over a route of 243 miles with a mark in French waters off Cannes before heading for the Giraglia islet and returning to the Yacht Club Italiano in Genoa, where the prizegiving will be held on Saturday, June 19.

The new programme thus excludes, exceptionally for this year, the coastal races which were held in the three days before the offshore classic. For 2021 there will be two-night approach races towards Sanremo. Two legs of about 60 miles, one starting from Genoa and one from St Tropez, to allow Italian and foreign crews to race to the port where the long race will start.

The races are for IRC-ORC rated yachts of more than 9.14 m overall.

The official date for the publication of the Notice of Race and the opening of online registrations is set for April 24, 2021 on the website: rolexgiraglia.com

The Yacht Club Italiano and its partners feel that this new programme, with start and finish in Italy, planned because of the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, will honour the tradition of the Rolex Giraglia, reinforcing friendly relations between Italy and France and facilitating the participation of crews from Italy and abroad. And, especially in a complex moment such as the present, will reinforce the sharing of the ideals of the sport of yachting, of solidarity at sea and the competitive spirit.

New Asymmetric Dinghy Book
Learn the secrets of sailing an asymmetric dinghy fast - be it an entry level boat or high-performance skiff, single- or double-handed. Written by asymmetric championship-winning sailor Andy Rice, with tips from over 17 of the world's top asymmetric sailors.

Asymmetric dinghies burst into the sailing scene in the 1990s and have transformed the sport. They led to the introduction of new types of courses and a new sailing style. While the basic principles may be the same as for conventional dinghies, the increased focus on apparent wind sailing and responding to changes in wind pressure and direction downwind are exciting new elements that asymmetric dinghies bring.

This book allows you to learn the secrets of getting the most from your asymmetric dinghy - whether you sail an entry level dinghy or a high-performance skiff, single-handed or with a crew. Following its advice will enable you to enjoy being at one with your boat and the wind. It is written by asymmetric champion sailor and journalist Andy Rice who has also gleaned tips, advice and some great shortcuts from expert sailors in a wide range of classes. This will give you the inside knowledge to improve your techniques and get ahead of the fleet.

There's step-by-step guidance, accompanied by great photo sequences. Every stage of asymmetric sailing is covered, including rigging and tuning, hoists, gybes and drops, tactics, survival sailing and advanced skills for solo and crewed boats.

"This book will be a treasure trove for anyone who sails an asymmetric dinghy, whether they are just starting to learn about apparent wind sailing or are competing at a high level. If you want to enjoy asymmetric sailing, and improve your skills, I thoroughly recommend this book." (Nathan Outteridge)

Rolex Capri Sailing Week
The first major event of the sailing season will take place as scheduled between Naples and Capri, from 13th to 20th May, with an unprecedented desire to race and on a completely Covid-free island - as confirmed by the administration.

Measurement checks are set to begin on 13th and 14th May, before the 66th Regata dei Tre Golfi sets off from the bay of Santa Lucia in Naples at the stroke of midnight on Saturday 15th May, against the backdrop of the sparkling lights of this enchanting Italian city. This year's edition of the regatta will be valid as the offshore race in the ORC European championship.

The Tre Golfi regatta is open to multihull, vintage and classic boats as well as double-handed crews, and covers approximately 150 miles from Naples to Ponza, returning to round the Li Galli rocks off Positano, before crossing the finish line in Capri. The fleet will then remain in Capri for the second phase of the European Championship, with three days of coastal racing taking place from Tuesday 18th to Thursday 20th May. A total of six races are scheduled, including the offshore race.

Alongside the stringent safety protocols put in place by the organizers, the administration of the island of Capri has implemented a rigorous program to safely welcome all participants in the event, which will inaugurate the tourist season in this difficult year.

To optimize communication and limit contact between the organizers and skippers, the RCSW will become a paperless regatta. All registrations and communications will take place exclusively via the event website, where participants can use a live chat to contact the organizers.

A weekly newsletter will provide all relevant updates, including those related to the Covid safety protocol.

Celebrated sailor Peter Warner killed in yacht capsize on NSW coast
One of Australia's most celebrated sailors has died after his yacht capsized in rough seas on the NSW North Coast this morning.

Peter Warner, 90, won three Sydney to Hobarts in the 1960s, but it was his rescue of marooned youngsters in the South Pacific that made him famous around the world.

Warner's yacht rolled on the incoming tide on the Ballina bar just before 9am today, throwing the 90-year-old and a teenager with him overboard.

In 1966, Warner discovered a group of shipwrecked Tongan teenagers who were stranded on an island for more than a year and presumed dead.

He was sailing his fishing boat Just David past the Tongan Island on 'Ata when he noticed burned patches of grass on the side of the island.

Six schoolboys had run away from their Catholic school, stolen a fishing boat, and then after eight days stranded at sea due to bad weather landed on the uninhabited island.

"The boys had set up a small commune with food garden, hollowed-out tree trunks to store rainwater, a gymnasium with curious weights, a badminton court, chicken pens and a permanent fire, all from handiwork, an old knife blade and much determination," he wrote in his memoir.

At the helm of his yacht Astor, Warner won line honours in three Sydney to Hobart races - in 1961, 1963, and 1964. In 1962 he came second by just one minute.

Raceboats Only YYACHTS Y7. POA EUR.

The Y7 was created in collaboration with US designer Bill Tripp, considered one of the world's best naval architects. Our goal was to combine comfortable sailing performance with competitive sailing performance, even on the regatta course.

In conditions where other yachts still use their engines, the sails are already set on the Y7. A displacement of only 29 tons and almost 300 square meters of sail area at wind make move the yacht even in light winds; Y7 owners don't have to worry about the perfect weather all the time.

All halyards, sheets and stretchers run hidden to the steering columns - so the helmsman can operate the Y7 alone at any time. This is not a matter of course for a 70-foot yacht and allows the owner to sail with a very small crew or even on his own.
