Canary Islands Become a Prelude to the Olympic Games
The Spanish team continues to dominate the Lanzarote International Regatta, with Canary Islander Tara Pacheco and Catalan Florian Trittel holding first place in Nacra 17, plus Cantabrian Diego Botín and Galician Iago López topping the 49er. Could we see the same result in Tokyo 2020?

Finland (Nacra 17), Ireland (49er) and Belgium (49er FX) are the European countries that will be competing for an Olympic pass in the Canary Islands. The Medal Race will be broadcast live simultaneously on the Olympic Channel and World Sailing media channels, in addition to the Lanzarote International Regatta.

In the 49er, Ireland is the country that holds the Olympic pass with Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove in third place. Both Irish 49er teams are sailing very well and remain in contention for a place at the Olympics

In the mixed modality of Nacra 17, Tara Pacheco from Gran Canaria and Florian Trittel from Barcelona continue to stand out, maintaining their first place, even improving on yesterday's results, sailing with around 10 knots in the first and second races, positioning themselves at the starts and maintaining their speed, which has allowed them to achieve almost three first places in a row.

Which European countries are competing for a place at the Olympic Games?

Nacra 17: Finland, Croatia, Netherlands, Greece, Poland, Hungary, Russia
49er FX: Sweden, Italy, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, Belgium, Russia
49er: Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Belgium, Portugal, Estonia, Slovenia, Turkey, Russia

Tunisia is the only African country aiming to represent Africa in the Nacra 17.

Beyond Beautiful - SWS Yachts
Southern Wind ... but Southern Wind Shipyard's glorious latest 100-foot sloop Morgana is blooming fast too

Some sailors' lifetime goal is to cruise around the world. Others have a burning ambition to win the world's major regattas. If you want to do both at the same time, you're going to need a very special yacht indeed. That was the ambitious design brief for Morgana, the latest 100ft high-performance superyacht built in Cape Town by Southern Wind Shipyard.

Launched on 18 October 2020, Morgana was handed over to her skipper and delivery crew just six weeks later and completed her 6,863-mile maiden voyage from South Africa to La Spezia, Italy in a creditable 30 days at an average speed of 10 knots. A top speed during that passage of 26.4 knots, logged while sailing downwind with a double-reefed mainsail and staysail, gives some insight into her potential.

2021 J/24 World Championship Cancellation
The International J/24 Class Association (IJCA) and the Parkstone Yacht Club in Poole United Kingdom today announced that the 2021 J/24 World Championship scheduled for September 26-October 1, 2021 has been cancelled. The Organizing Committee (OC) had hoped that it would be possible to hold the much-anticipated regatta this autumn. However, despite the encouraging progress that is being made toward the UK's recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is clear that even if the UK lockdown continues in line with the UK Government's current timetable, there will continue to be uncertainty regarding International travel for some time.

Regatta Chairman Bryan Drake commented, "We know that this will cause a great deal of disappointment, not only to the OC who have worked hard for over four years to deliver a superb event but also to the J/24 community across the world. Both the OC and the J/24 crews were hoping that the pandemic would be behind us all by now so that we could have looked forward to a fabulous fortnight later this year, but there is too much uncertainty to make this viable."

The IJCA and its members worldwide look forward to resuming World Championship sailing in 2022.

Paul Cayard to Lead U.S. Olympic Sailing Program
Paul Cayard US Sailing today announced Paul Cayard (San Francisco, Calif.), one of America's most accomplished sailors, in the role of Executive Director of U.S. Olympic Sailing. Cayard will take the helm of the US Sailing Team, inclusive of the U.S. Olympic Sailing program.

Cayard has been highly involved in Olympic Sailing throughout his illustrious career. He is a two-time Olympian in 1984 and 2004. Sailing in the Star Class, he earned a silver medal at the pre-Olympic regatta in 2003. Cayard went on to finish fifth at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens.

The San Francisco native is a seven-time world champion, seven-time America's Cup competitor, has twice circumnavigated the world, becoming the first American to win the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1998. In 1998 he was selected as the Rolex Yachtsman of the Year and in 2011 he was inducted in the National Sailing Hall of Fame.

Under Cayard's leadership, the U.S. Olympic Sailing program will bring best-in-class coaching, elite athleticism, and best-in-the-world technology and innovation to the US Olympic Team. Further, the program will continue to cultivate its Olympic Development Program (ODP), launched in 2014, to cultivate a strong pipeline of young talent and enable them to pursue the loftiest of dreams. Overall, the program aims to create a culture of excellence that inspires every American sailor.

Four out of five British boat owners may quit long-term cruising in EU waters
A survey carried out amongst Cruising Association (CA) members who keep their boats on the rivers and canals of Schengen countries has revealed that 80% are likely to sell their boats and give up cruising altogether, or move their base to a non-Schengen country.

Overall figures for coastal cruising boat owners are expected to be broadly similar although with more sailing out of Schengen waters to other cruising grounds.

The failure of the UK government to negotiate a fair deal with the EU means that UK citizens can now only visit Schengen countries for 90 days in every 180, making it impossible for boat owners to spend a whole season exploring Europe's coasts and inland waterways.

The CA says that this flies in the face of Britain's maritime heritage and shrinks the country's pool of experienced, adventurous sailors.

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Patron of the Cruising Association, recently called on The Rt Hon Oliver Dowden CBE MP, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, to step in to resolve the difficulties now facing the approximately 30,000 British sailors who currently keep their boats in EU waters, and who are facing this threat to long-distance cruising.

The 180-Day Campaign is gathering pace, with new members signing up to the Association in support of its efforts.

First Virtual CCA Awards Ceremony
Randall Reeves In early March in a normal year, Cruising Club of America members visit the New York Yacht Club in Manhattan for a weekend of meetings featuring an Awards dinner to recognize more than half a dozen worthy sailors as recipients of the club's major awards. The pomp and circumstance of that event had to be adapted to a virtual space this year, starting with an hour-long presentation, largely pre-recorded, followed by a longer breakout-room segment in which members conversed with the winners in real time.

As it turned out, sailing royalty showed up from all over the globe, including six previous winners of the Blue Water Medal: Jean Luc Van Den Heede (2019), Skip Novak (2014), Jeanne Socrates (2013), Peter Passano (2007), Tony Gooch (2003), and Bob and Beth Lux (1996). They provided a great welcome reception for the 2020 winner Randall Reeves.

In accepting his award, Reeves said he had had a great deal of good luck, starting with marrying his wife Joanna, who buoyed him up despite "resounding failures." He also credited his luck at finding the right vessel for the trip, his 45-foot aluminum cutter Moli, "a boat fast enough and big enough, simple enough that I could handle it and fix what broke, yet strong enough to handle divergent requisites of big seas in the south and ice in the north." He also credited former owner and Blue Water Medal winner Tony Gooch: "He was my living and breathing owners manual."

2020 Cruising Club of America Award Winners

Randall Reeves - Blue Water Medal
Christian Charalambous - Rod Stephens Seamanship Trophy
Calypso Romero/Adrien Koller - Young Voyager Award
Stephen Brown - Far Horizons Medal
Salty Dawg Sailing Association - Special Recognition Award

Construction of Maxi Banque Populaire XI Enters Final Phase

Maxi Banque Populaire XI Armel, Ronan and the Banque Populaire Team are busy around the new 32-meter-long Ultim which is gradually revealing its shapes. While the work to be done remains substantial, the launch is scheduled for the end of April. What to start dreaming, already, of the first flights.

"The entire composite and structural part has been completed," specifies Gautier Levisse, head of the team Banque Populaire research office. The nets were set up last week. You can imagine what the boat will look like once in the water ".

The most visible work still to be done concerns the assembly of the appendages. The float rudders will be installed next week. It will then be necessary to implant the foils. As for the central daggerboard, it will be installed once the boat is in the water. " In addition, we will have to focus on the hydraulic, electronic and computer wiring, in order to make the boat fully functional ", summarizes Ronan Lucas

* From Gordon Davies IJ:

It is possible that Butch Dalrymple Smith has not ventured into one of the more obscure corners of the rule book. Not many people do!

I refer to rule 89.1(g) which states that an organising authority may be:

an unaffiliated body in conjunction with an affiliated club where the body is owned and controlled by the club.

This rule was drafted to cater for exactly the situation he is questioning - when a club sets up a separate organisation to run major events.

* From Barry Pickthall:

Butch Dalrymple Smith asks a very pertinent question: How can the Royal Yacht Squadron Racing, a Company limited by Guarantee, become a challenger of the 37th America's Cup?

The Deed of Gift, which defines such matters, is clear. According to Bob Fisher's 2-volume definitive history on the Cup 'An Absorbing Interest', The original Deed of Gift dated July 8th 1857, states: 'Any organised Yacht Club of any foreign country shall always be entitled through any one or more of its members, to claim the right of a sailing match for this Cup,,, It is to be distinctly understood that the Cup is to be the property of the Club, and not of its members thereof, or owners of the vessel winning it in the match; and that the condition of keeping it open to be sailed for by Yacht Clubs of all foreign countries upon the terms above laid down, shall forever attach to it, thus making it perpetually a Challenge Cup for friendly competition between foreign countries'

Although the Deed was rewritten in 1887 (to encourage Canadian challenges) and amended after the Second World War (to allow 12 metre yachts to compete) and again in 1985 (to allow Cup matches to be raced in the Southern Hemisphere summer), the original objective of challenge matches between yacht clubs has remained enshrined.

The Royal Yacht Squadron is eminently suitable to challenge for the America's Cup, but not an individual or limited Company.

By accepting this challenge, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is open to the risk of being forced to accept a rogue challenge. from a disgruntled challenger ostracised from the planned one-on-one Match in the Solent. It happened to the San Diego YC in 1988 and to the Societe Nautique de Geneva in 2007.

Does anyone really want that?

Royal Yacht Squadron Racing, was formed in 2014 before joining forces with INEOS in 2018.
