The Canaries Win in the Pre-Olympics
Tara Pacheco from the Canary Islands and Florian Trittel from Barcelona have shown that they know how to read both the wind and the waves of Lanzarote better than anyone else on the Canary Islands regatta course. The Spanish duo formed by Diego Botín from Cantabria and Iago López from Galicia also lead in the 49er class. Tamara Echegoyen and Paula Barceló managed to climb 7 positions, which allowed them to reach the Nacra podium on Tuesday.

Andres Barrios from the Canary Islands and Antonio Torrado from Alicante, as well as Elías Aretz from Gran Canaria and Albert Torres from the Balearic Islands, won the last day of qualifying races, among the 25 who will be part of the group that will compete for the gold medal.

This Tuesday the conditions on the Lanzarote regatta course favoured the Spanish Olympic team, who demonstrated - in the Canary Islands waters - that they are more than ready for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. A light veil of haze, so characteristic of the islands that covered the three regatta courses, made visibility difficult.

Robot sailor was Team NZ's secret weapon
Team New Zealand's ace in the hole in its successful defence of the America's Cup may have been a sailor who was never seen on the water but who clocked more miles than all of the crew of the winning boat Te Rehutai.

It was capable at times of out-sailing the Team New Zealand afterguard and, then, only months after it had learned to sail in a straight line.

The mystery sailor was a bot, a robot, or an artificial intelligence creation which became in effect a virtual sailor. It did its vital work in the computer simulator on which Team New Zealand's winning hydrofoil designs were rigorously tested and proven.

"The Team New Zealand simulator is arguably the most advanced sailing simulator in the world and for that reason they're very confident when they load in a hydrofoil to test in the simulation environment they're going to get really good data that is very applicable on the water,'' McKinsey senior partner Brian Fox told The Associated Press from New Jersey.

Introducing Air Vang From Harken
Air Vang From Harken The rigid vang that's easier to use, just got easier to specify and buy.

Harken has teamed up with Marine Products Engineering to offer Harken Vang-Master rigid pneumatic mechanical vangs. That's right, the Vang-Master uses air to provide the extension pressure that holds booms up—no need for fluid or hoses. And they offer unlimited adjustment without springs and their squeaks. Every Vang-Master is built of hardcote-anodized 6061-T6 aluminum. Tubing and end fittings thread together to eliminate fasteners and reduce corrosion caused by dissimilar metals.

To help make the selection process easier, Harken Vang-Masters come in four cylinder diameters. There's a menu of 120+ build lengths for everything from Moore 24s to Andrews 70s to get you close. But even stock one-designs can be slightly different. So compare the list with your own pin-to-pin measurement for the perfect fit. External purchase systems are sold separately and supplied with line specifically selected for its application, pre-measured and spliced with 100% Harken hardware.

Harken distribution makes Vang-Master easy to obtain, while making sure technical support is readily available and there's fast turnaround on spare parts. Is it time to replace that aging vang? It's easier now. We're pumped!

WMRT partners with RS Sailing
The World Match Racing Tour today announced sailboat manufacturer RS Sailing as Official Partner of the WMRT Academy, the training and development initiative set up by the tour in 2020 to grow participation in match racing around the world. RS Sailing is the world's largest small sailboat manufacturer including popular models such as the RS Tera and RS Feva, RS200, RS500 skiff, and RS Aero

As part of the partnership, RS Sailing will provide WMRT partners with access to a specially commissioned charter package of their RS21 keelboats which can be used for training programs and match racing events.

Since it was launched just a couple of years ago, the RS21 has quickly become a popular club racing keelboat with growing fleets in the USA, Europe, Oceania and most recently in Bermuda. The 4 person keelboat is ideal for sailors interested in learning the skills of match racing, crew work and racing technique

Built using bio-derived resins and recycled core materials, the RS21 is also a leader in eco-friendly construction, important to both RS Sailing's and WMRT's focus on sustainability. The deck shape and removable keel system of the RS21 allow six (6) race-ready boats to be transported in a single 40-foot sea freight container, a unique feature within the keelboat world. The boats can also be fitted with a fully electric saildrive e-propulsion system.

For details of the RS21 Charter fleet availability and pricing, contact or quoting the reference WMRT21 in the email subject heading.

2021 J/70 European Championship Postponed to August
The KDY Organizing Committee and the International J/70 Class Association had a meeting to go through all options for making the 2021 J/70 European Championship a success. The restrictions and regulations on how to adapt to the Corona situation would most likely make sailing possible, but there will be restrictions with respect to how many boats on the water at the same time, restrictions on how to behave in the harbor and all social activities would be cancelled. And even with the most flexible planning, competitors might end up in a situation where sailing would be impossible because of travel restrictions, etc. Therefore, it was decided to move the Championship to late August this year. Registration/inspections will start on August 27 and the prize-giving ceremony will conclude the Championship on September 4.

The event was scheduled in June at the Royal Danish Yacht Club. The revised Notice of Race will be posted in the coming days at www.j70europeans2021.com.

It is our hope to be able to host a great and "normal" regatta with activity at the harbor, socializing and great racing later this year.

505 World Championships Return To Cork
The Royal Cork Yacht Club is proud to announce that it will host the 2022 5O5 World Championship, which will take place in Cork, Ireland from 1st -13th August, 2022. More than 120 crews from over 15 nations are expected to descend on the village of Crosshaven in Cork to compete for the title of 5O5 World Champion. This will be the fourth time the club will have hosted the 505 World Championships, having welcomed visiting crews previously in 1959, 1964 and 1982.

The Royal Cork Yacht Club is the oldest yacht club in the world, having been founded in 1720, and the 505 World Championships will form part of the club's continued Tricentenary celebrations. Other notable events in the celebrations include the hosting of the Topper World Championships in July 2021 and the biennial, world renowned, Cork Week which will take place in July 2022.

The 505 has been established and racing around the world for over 60 years. However combined with that rich history and past success the Class continues to surprise and remains one of, if not the, most successful 2 person sailing choice in the world. The event is likely to draw the world's top sailors and past Olympians such as Howie Hamlin (Multiple World Champion in 18ft skiffs, 14 ft skiffs, 5o5s), Mike Martin and Adam Lowry (US Yachtsmen Of The Year 2020), Boris Herrmann (5th 2020/2021 Vendee Globe) and Ian Pinnell (multiple dinghy World Champion).

The 60 year old design of the 505 has proven to be timeless, with continued innovation and use of the most modern materials ensuring the 505 class remains one of the best dinghy racing fleets in the world.

Solo Maitre Coq
On 22nd March 2021, the first race of the Figaro circuit, the Solo Maitre Coq, started in Les Sables d'Olonne.

This year, 29 participants have taken the start of this race which will take place between March 22 and 28, with 4 legs on the program, including an offshore race of 340 nautical miles between Belle-Ile, Re and Yeu. This great race will start on Thursday March 25th in the afternoon and will finish on Saturday March 27th.

This solo event has the particularity of offering to those who take part several programs in one competition. First of all, the regatta, during the first 3 days. This start allows the skippers to test themselves before playing for speed and winning. Then comes the offshore race, where technique and nautical skills take all their importance.

www.boatsnews.com

* Tom Dolan finished seventh and just seven minutes and five seconds behind Alan Roberts, the winner of the first inshore race of the 2021 Solo Maitre Coq.

Dolan is racing in the foiling Figaro Beneteau 3 class of 29 entries. Conditions for the first race at Port Olona, Les Sables d'Olonne were unstable with variations in force and direction.

The National Yacht Club said afterwards that he managed to stick to his strategy and 'to be in the right place at the right time'.

The Solo Maitre CoQ, the first event of the five that form the French Elite Offshore Racing Championship. starts with short, inshore races Monday and Tuesday, a lay day Wednesday before a 340 nautical miles offshore race from Thursday to Saturday.

"The goal this week is to dust off the cobwebs and validate what we have been doing. The main pinnacles are the Transat Concarneau Saint Barths in May and La Solitaire du Figaro August-September, so, although I want a good result here - as much because this has been a bit of a 'black cat event (ed note, in France the black cat is seen as unlucky) - it is not a dealbreaker," Dolan asserts.

Industry News
The Greek Yachting Association, in coordination with the Municipality of Nafplion, has announced the cancellation of the 2021 Mediterranean Yacht Show (MEDYS) that was set to take place from April 22-25 at the port of Nafplion. Recent developments in the Covid-19 situation and current international travel restrictions led to the decision.

GYA says the decision to cancel this year's show was not taken lightly, as the MEDYS helps highlight the unique nature of yachting in Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean and provides an important business tool for the industry.

"We would like to express our appreciation for your support and understanding, and assure you that GYA will continue to present new ways for you to discover the many advantages that Greek yachting has to offer. In the meantime, the Virtual Charter Yacht Show is on air and provides a glimpse of some of the finest vessels to grace the Greek seas through a series of in-depth video-tours.

A Dinghy Zone geared towards the interest of dinghy sailors and high-performance sailing will flow into a Classic Boat & Day Boat Zone.

Moving into Mayflower Park and the massive marina, there will be hundreds of power and sail boats, equipment and services on show.

The popular Caribbean yacht cruising location of Belize has become the first country in the region to open up to vaccinated visitors without the requirement of having to present a negative virus test.

According to a Caribbean Journal report, Belize instead requires that tourists present a vaccination record card no less than two weeks prior to travelling. For non-vaccinated visitors the country still requires a negative PCR test taken within 96 hours ahead of travel or a negative rapid antigen test taken within 48 hours of travel.

The maritime borders of Belize have been open since late February. The Belize Port Authority, a key maritime body in the country, has indicated that it is confident that yacht tourism and related water sports such as snorkelling, diving and fishing can be undertaken safetly.

The following conditions are in place for visiting yachts:

A licensed shipping agent is required for the vessel to enter. Only shipping agents with special licenses are authorised to deal with these non-commercial vessels and are authorised to charge a set tariff of no more than US$150 for their service

Notice to enter must be made at least 72 hours prior to arrival

The yacht's crew and passengers must show proof of a negative Covid-19 test upon entry. Both PCR (taken within 72 hours of arrival) and Rapid Antigen (taken within 48 hours of arrival) tests are accepted
